Are you a reader or want to be a reader? Well, both Judy and I love a good book! Over the years I have read or listened to the audio version of countless stories. But lately (since retired from teaching) my reading habit has fallen off. This year, I've decided to refresh this practice. My reasons go beyond the educational focus of upgrading my mind and opening up other worlds. Instead, I look forward to becoming more interesting, improving my memory, and reducing stress. With that said, please put book recommendations (fiction or nonfiction) in the comments. Or, if you want a personal reply, please drop a message to Judy, me, or any of the Sidetracked Sisters! We start off the latest podcast with a talk about monkeys and forced labor. Yes, monkeys and forced labor. Alexa Guard is almost here, but is Alexa barking like a dog to scare possible intruders and always listening, a good thing? Congress is working on introducing the Access Affordability Act, but is it enough? CBS All access will be rebranding to paramount TV Plus, who wants to bet on its accessibility? We then welcome to the podcast, Comedian Shaun Eli. We walk through the early days of Brian and Shaun performing at open mics, the difference between doing stand-up before an American audience compared to an International audience, and then dive in to the project Shaun and Brian recently completed, making all of Shaun’s websites screen reader accessible. Shaun then lets us know what it is like to perform stand up comedy over Zoom definitely a lot different than performing at the clubs. To learn more about Shaun, subscribe to his weekly email joke list, and see him live once the world gets back to performing live comedy please visit www.brainchampagne.com. After our interview with Shaun, it’s on to a conversation about the latest iOS 14.4 update and Braille displays. The Catholic Nerds interview Zac “still the cutest gif ever” Mabry, a Catholic convert and child actor best remembered as Porky from The Little Rascals. Mabry, who hosts the Roman Circus Podcast (see below), talks about the moment that changed his life forever … the moment he was bitten by a radioactive Catholic spider in the catacombs of the Vatican necropolis ... or something like that. Beware the giant rolling boulder and the Nazis - I hate these guys - and journey with the Catholic Nerds beneath St. Peter’s to the lost tomb of St. Peter, the Scavi tour. The Catholic crusade continues as the Nerds visit Mexico City, the Aztec Temples of Doom, and the woman who doomed them, Our Lady of Guadalupe. “Whatcha Reading?” includes The Fisherman’s Tomb, The Graveyard Book, The Walking Dead, Spe Salve, article stalking of Zac Mabry, The Papal Monarchy, The Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar, Scott Hahn’s Understanding Our Father, and other completely homogenous topics. Oh, and there was hushed talk of ... Masons! They did not survive the Nerds’ Last Crusade. They chose poorly. We talk everything from her abundance of writing awards, including a KOALA Legend award in 2017 (as voted by kids!), her writing journey, and hear more about her latest release, the second book in her spelling bee series starring the determined and lovable India Wimple. In Kids' Capers, we journey back to the past and hand over the reigns to three young readers, who each review one of our hosts favourite books from their childhoods. Hear if the books stand the test of time, and if they noticed anything a bit dated, such as some of the technology referred to! There's also the chance to win a fabulous book pack - the entire six book shortlist of the 2018 Readings Children's Book Prize! March 17th, 2018: Things are crazy in romancelandia this week (wait, when aren’t they?!). Racism, crossing boundaries, and publisher closing, oh my! I’m also talking about the books I read – Elizabeth Hoyt and Dria Andersen -- as well as what I'm reading this weekend (Susan Cliff, Talia Hibbert, and Jeaniene Frost). Come tell me about your week and what you’re reading at the moment!
Whatcha Reading (March 3rd, 2018) I’m sorry about the audio quality on this one; I’m not sure what happened after I finished exporting the file. One day I will know what the hell I’m doing. Today is not that day. *sigh* I start off with some good ol’ romancelandia WTFery, thanks to a romance that Lauren found where the heroine’s dog dies and comes back as a man, whom she then falls for. WHAT. (I still do not know, but PASS!) From there, I move into some more serious topics in romancelandia, mainly the Ripped Bodice’s 2017 diversity in publishing report, which is, uh, NOT GOOD, to say the least. Finally, I'm talking about books by Lia Riley, Elyse Springer, and Kelly Bowen, including quotes and sex scenes (OF COURSE!). As always, I wrap things up with my current read and audiobook (Naima Simone and Eloisa James, respectively). Have a great weekend everyone and happy reading!
Whatcha Reading (February 24th, 2018) The podcast is baaaaaack! I talk a bit about why I was gone for so long, and what the podcast's future looks like, before getting right into the book discussions for the week. (I skipped doing anything romance Twitter related and didn't get a chance to record the blog recap.) I'm talking about books by Ilona Andrews, Lisa Kleypas, Katee Robert, and Penny Reid. As always, I wrap things up with my current read and audiobook (Lia Riley and Kelly Bowen, respectively).
Orange-Glazed Muffins and Gilmores. Romance novels are not junk food (same sh*t, different day). I share a recap of recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Bec McMaster and Roni Loren.
2017 Favorites: Why so white and cishet? I also talk at length about some of my reading/blogging resolutions for 2018, and ask for yours (and some book recs!) as well. Then I share a recap of recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Donna Grant, Rebekah Weatherspoon, and Talia Hibbert.
Misogyny in romance (M/F and M/M), diverse/inclusive writing, lack of diverse cover options, and everyone's catnip: "This had too much sex, ew!". Plus I share a recap of recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Kendall Ryan (rant), Alyssa Cole, and Sherry Thomas.
Problematic as promised, cover snark, and vocal-blogger-don't care. Plus a recap of recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Megan Erickson, Bec McMaster, Sophie Jordan, and Anna Zabo.
Unsafe sex in romancelandia, don't kill of previous heroes, and problematic sh*t, plus recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Avon Gale/Piper Vaughn, Elizabeth Hoyt, and Talia Hibbert.
Upside down wall sex WTF?, who to follow in the body positive community, plus recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Alisha Rai, Jill Shalvis, and Vivian Arend.
Stop trying to explain romance to us. No seriously, stop. Family holiday dishes -- what's unique to your dinner table? Plus recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Kelly Bowen, Jennifer Gracen, and Meljean Brook.
Everyone deserves a HEA, calling out some reviews, that's-not-a-romance-cover, and recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh, and Santino Hassell (and a DNF from Alison Bliss).
Read more books from AOC, sex WTFery on horses, and recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Molly O'Keefe, Madeline Hunter, and a ten-author anthology.
Community losses, authors' prom-OH-NO, and recent posts on the blog. I also talk about books from Annabeth Albert, Jennifer McQuiston, and Tiffany Reisz.
Confusing blurbs, diversity IS realistic, and recent reviews on the blog. I also talk about books from Jennifer Gracen, Katy Evans, Kresley Cole, and Elizabeth Hoyt.
Calculating dick size, ARC organization, a few recipes, and recent reviews on the blog. I also talk about books from Sarina Bowen, Eva Leigh, Cynthia Eden, and Katee Robert.
Sneaky reprints from the 80's, masturbation in romance, and recent reviews on the blog. I also talk about books from Ilona Andrews, Kate Clayborn, Jill Shalvis, and Santino Hassell.
We don't need the NYT, ebook pricing, and recent reviews on the blog. I also talk about books from Robin Covington, Julie James, Erica Taylor, and Tiffany Reisz.
Fall weather, shitty NYT "reviews", and monster sized peens, oh my! Plus I talk about books from Lorelei James, Christi Barth, Christina Lauren, Shelly Laurenston, Robin Covington, and Julie James!
Cervix poking, diversity, and problematic rep! Plus I talk about romances from K.J. Charles, Joanna Bourne, Tamsen Parker, Janice Maynard, Christi Barth, and Lorelei James.
Malts and romance novels on a rainy Friday. I talk about books by Emma Chase, Lauren Dane, Priscilla Oliveras, Tessa Dare, Victoria Dahl, Joanna Bourne and K.J. Charles
