When Jane, Arnna, and Grant Beaumont failed to return home after a run of the mill summer beach day in 1966, the largest land, sea, and air search in South Australian history began. Still unsolved after over 5 decades, their disappearance will forever be known as "the loss of Australia's innocence." Sources at drhpod.com
The theme this week on the One Minute Retirement Tip podcast is: Ask me anything! I'm answering your listener-submitted questions about what is weighing most on your mind as you prepare for retirement. Today, I'm answering the following question: Does it make sense to allocate savings to the company stock in my 401(K)? Jane writes: My company offers a company stock fund within my 401K. I currently have $305,000 invested in the company stock and I would like to continue to invest in the stock. I am confident in the company's future growth, and I want to reduce my future required minimum distributions. Does it make sense to continue to allocate funds to the company stock in my 401k? Ok, this is a great question from Jane, and you might miss the nuance of her question regarding RMDs. Why would investing in her company stock in the 401k allow her to reduce her future required minimum distributions? Well, it's because of a little known rule called net unrealized appreciation. When Jane retires, she will be able to withdraw her company stock from her 401k plan, only pay tax on the original purchase amount of the stock, rather than rolling over the stock to an IRA where she will have future required distributions and will pay higher income tax on those distributions. It's such a crazy loophole, and based on the amount that Jane has in her company stock vs. her original cost basis, it will likely amount to some serious tax savings when she retires. She's concerned about required minimum distributions, but I don't think that's the most important consideration when deciding whether or not to invest in company stock in the 401k. $305,000 in the company stock sounds like a lot of money, and it is. But Jane has been with the same company for nearly 40 years, and has done an amazing job of saving. She currently has just over $2 million in her company's 401k. The stock makes up about 14% of her total 401k balance. So if the stock is a good quality investment with strong future growth prospects, I don't take issue with Jane continuing to add to her company stock, as long as she and her husband would be just fine in retirement if the stock went belly up. She is getting close to retirement and classifies herself as a conservative investor, so she needs to be careful to not take on too much risk by continuing to add to the stock. If you work for a company where you own stock inside of your 401k, it's important to understand the net unrealized appreciation rules, so you won't miss out on what's likely to be a massive tax benefit in retirement. Lastly, I would just like to take a moment to commend Jane for her loyalty to her employer and her diligent saving over the last 38 years! Well done, Jane! That's it for today. Thanks for listening! Let's take a trip back to the 1950s! Or Maybe let's not, because it looks like our tour guide is a real turd. It's time for "Life in the Past Lane," here on Morgendorks! When Jane hooks up with a guy who's obsessed with the "timeless" style of the 40s and 50s, she falls into it herself—much to the dismay of Daria. Also, Upchuck's a magician now! So that's cool, I guess. Whole lot to chat about with this one, with a ton of cultural context mixed in throughout. Enjoy! Let's take a dive into the world of art recreations and frivolous lawsuits! It's "Art Burn," this week on Morgendorks! When Jane gets hired by a local scumbag gallery owner to paint recreations of famous works to pay off gazebo debts, she's conflicted: Getting paid for art is awesome, but just how much time and energy can you dedicate to painting someone else's work before you've kinda forgotten what being an artist meant to you in the first place? This one's a little ... weird. It just feels like an odd episode, for reasons we'll explore. Also, we get into the bizarre (fake) illness that has swept the Internet for 16 years—and originated in Daria fanfiction. Enjoy! Season four has been a long and turbulent ride, and it's not about to get any smoother as we roll into its finale, "Dye! Dye! My Darling," this week on Morgendorks! When Jane pushes Daria into a hair dyeing adventure she's deeply uncertain about, things go horribly wrong—and it brings all of the tensions of the previous twelve episodes to a head (heheh). Love! Loss! Betrayal! This episode has it all! Ahhh! Oh! And for our cultural context (yaaayyy it's back), we look at the classic short story, "The Lady, or the Tiger?" What's it about? Jane Johnston Schoolcraft is the first known American Indian literary writer, the first known Indian woman writer, the first known Indian poet, and the first known poet to write poems in a Native American language. A poet who wrote in at least two languages, navigated several cultures and expressed her pride of belonging to the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people in both English and Ojibwe poems, Jane Johnston Schoolcraft invites us to reconsider existing categories for understanding American and American Indian literacy. Schoolcraft (her English name) or Bamewawagezhikaquay (her Ojibwe name, meaning “Woman of the Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky”), was born as one of eight children in 1800 in Sault Ste. Marie in today’s state of Michigan, then a cross-cultural hub of British, French, Canadian and American Indian influence. Her mother, Ozhaguscodaywayquay, was born in Chequamegon in the mid 1770s in the northern part of what is now Wisconsin as the daughter of Waubojeeg, a renowned Ojibwe warrior and chief also known for his skills in story-telling and son; her Irish-born father, John Johnston was a fur trader who greatly valued books. Jane was educated at home, reading widely and speaking and writing Ojibwe, English and French, with a brief and difficult interlude with an aunt in Ireland where she might have attended school. In 1823 she married Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who has become known as the first person to record a large body of American Indian stories. They had three children but their first-born, William Henry, died at age two, and one daughter was stillborn. With Jane’s assistance Henry published The Literary Voyager or Muzzenyegun, which included some of Jane’s writings without attribution. When Jane died unexpectedly in 1842, she had written literary prose pieces and poems, only a small number of which had appeared in a handwritten magazine produced by her husband. I spoke with Professor Robert Dale Parker of the University of Illinois, who discovered, edited and published Jane Johnston Schoolcraft's poetry in The Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky: The Writings of Jane Johnston Schoolcraft, as well as Changing is not Vanishing: A Collection of American Indian Poetry to 1930, in addition to books on Faulkner, and on critical theory. We talked about the ambiguous status of being "the first," about Native American poetry, about Jane's life, and about several of her moving, searing and strangely timely poems. Her beautiful poem, "Sweet Willy," was recorded in a gorgeous rendition by Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith; they graciously granted permission to use this song here to bring Schoolcraft's poetry to an ever wider audience. ** "Sweet Willy, My Boy · Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith · John Johnston: His Life and Times in the Fur Trade Era ℗ 2005 Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith Released on: 2005-01-01 (Song consent to be used on "Think About It Podcast" by Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith on November 25th, 2020 by email to Ulrich Baer) ** /////////////// Follow us: TWITTER - @ulibaer INSTAGRAM - @uli.baer (THINK ABOUT IT PODCAST) - @thinkaboutit.podcast ROBERT DALE PARKER - @robertdaleparker //////////////// Listen to the Podcast on: APPLE PODCASTS - Think About It Podcast SPOTIFY - Think About It Podcast YOUTUBE: Ulrich Baer //////////////// Thanks for listening! :)

When Jane and Sydney's grandmother dies and Sydney claims not to care because she always loved Jane more, Jane feels appalled. Then Jane finds out their grandmother is leaving her a six-figure bequest and Sydney nothing, and feels guilty. Then Jane hears that, actually, Gram never changed her will after the divorce, so the cash has been willed to Dr. and Mrs. Michael and Jane Mancini, and feels horrified...because she already quit her job with Kay and rented commercial space to start her own design business. Whoops! Billy is hurt when he finds out that Alison is planning to go back to Wisconsin for her father's 50th birthday party without him, and even more hurt when he hears that no one's going to wonder where her fiancé is at this major life event because no one back home actually knows she's engaged. He then buys his own plane ticket behind her back, invites himself along, and ignores her twice-stated wishes that he not upstage her father on his special day by announcing their engagement and does precisely that, mostly in order not to get cucked by an ex that her oblivious parents keep inviting around because as far as they know Billy is just Alison's roommate. The longer Alison spends in her childhood home, though, the less bothered she is by Billy's heedless cloddishness, and the more haunted she seems to be by dark memories. On her latest D&D shoot, Jo meets a model, Gregory, who hits on her hard, RIGHT up until he finds out why she's sticking to club soda on their date. 30 Sunset at the Pool Their meeting with Juan and a few of his key men went on until sunset. Jane who had promised herself only a couple of margaritas had followed it with wine, some port and finally a Baileys Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini Cocktail that she took with her to the pool with Joe walking beside her. Joe asked her, “have you ever thought you might have a problem with drinking?” “Yes, I have," Jane said laughing a little. She felt happier and safer than she had felt in a long time, maybe ever she thought. “And what did you decide?" Joe asked. “That I have a problem, but that I may not live long enough for it to kill me," Jane said her tone changing in mid-sentence to a more somber tone. “So, you do realize that the road you are on has a lot of perils," Joe said as they sat down beside the pool on the same lawn chairs they had left about six hours before. “Yeah, I do. I am feeling way too good at the moment to want to spoil it by talking about my mortality," Jane explained. “We will do all that serious talk tomorrow. Hold my drink, I am going to take a swim. She slipped her dress off, hesitated a moment, and then took off her bikini. “I don’t want them wet when I put them back on,” she said. She then walked over to the edge of the pool and dove in. Joe watched her beautiful body lit up by the spotlight in the pool. She was magnificent in so many ways he thought. He had a brief wish that he was younger, but he knew his competitive edge when he was young would have always been at conflict with her very serious, almost combative attitude. Now, he could just worship her in all her wonderfully fascinating glory. Joe sipped her drink and found it too sweet and then set it on the ground near his chair. He looked around and wondered why no one else in the hotel was out enjoying the pool on such a glorious night. He had noticed the lobby seemed unusually quiet for a summer night in August. Something was brewing and he felt quite sure something was going down. When Jane finally came out of the pool and walked back to him, he made no effort to avert his eyes. She was accustomed to men gawking at her. Joe had such appreciation in his eyes and that half-smile on his face that she wanted to model for him. “What do you think," she asked as she turned slowly around feeling his eyes absorb her. “I think you are unbelievably gorgeous and lacking any semblance of modesty," he said. She laughed, ‘I know that, but I meant the drink." Listen for more ... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alamo/message
Today, I’m joined by legendary ethologist and conservationist Dame Dr Jane Goodall, known best for her groundbreaking research of wild chimpanzees. When Jane moved from England to Gombe in Tanzania, at the age of just 26, virtually nothing was known about chimpanzees in the wild. Her findings, in particular observing them using tools to get food, changed our understanding of animal behaviour and the natural world, and propelled Jane to international fame. What makes this even more astounding is that at the time, she had no formal scientific qualifications. Still running today, the study is the world’s longest running continuous wildlife research project.Jane has since been named a United Nations Messenger of Peace and was invested as a dame of the British Empire. Now at the age of 86 she remains a dedicated activist, travelling 300 days of every year (before covid), becoming equally well known as a conservationist and a champion of human rights.Destination Recap:Bournemouth SerengetiGombe GermanyCape Town TanzaniaNebraskaMalaysia Tendaguru, Tanzania Lubbock ,TexasAuschwitz Haiti Death Thank you so much for listening. Time for another episode of Morgendorks! This week, we're talking about "Speedtrapped." When Jane and Mystic Spiral find themselves stuck in a dusty southwestern town's jail, Quinn and a newly licensed Daria are tasked with riding in to the rescue. It feels a whole lot like a plot you'd expect on a show with a slightly older cast—and also Lawndale is nowhere near the American southwest—but, hey, here we are. And for our cultural context we dive just a little bit into some of the references this particular episode makes to the American southwest—and how such a unique region is covered by our popular media. While Billy settles into life with Amanda -- which, since she's doing his laundry and boning him all the time, is pretty easy -- an unsettled Alison makes an impetuous decision: she WILL move to Seattle with Keith. Everyone in Alison's life thinks this is a terrible idea, though everyone is too scared to say so to Alison's face except Lucy, who fought to get Alison her promotion and doesn't appreciate receiving Alison's notice via answering machine message. As Alison tries to talk herself into her big move, Billy starts to notice that he and Amanda actually may not be that compatible after all. (Her impatience with finding his towels on the floor all the time and saying something about it may have something to do with it.) But will Billy's epiphany coincide with one from Alison? Michael and Jane's old college friend Sam (Rob Estes!) comes to town, but can only meet for dinner on a night when Michael's on call. When Jane sees him alone, Sam kisses her, which she quickly ends. She decides not to tell Michael the rage fiend, but Sam doesn't think to check with her before going to the hospital to apologize to Michael and touching off his latest temper tantrum. On day 20 of the Claremont Serial Killings trial, the court was given a glimpse into the life of Jane Rimmer through photographs taken from inside her house days after she went missing, a woman’s life frozen in time. Images from the 23-year-old child care worker’s house and belongings were shown to the court by former forensic police officer Robert Hemelaar, who searched Jane’s Wembley flat. Bills, papers, even a KFC voucher had been left on her dining table revealing the life frozen in time of a young woman who was never to return. When Jane's body was found 55 days later, police swarmed the scene. Today one of those officers, former forensic police officer Robert Hemelaar told in graphic detail how her body was found, and how forensics went about moving her body. The video officer for police also gave evidence on day 20. Justice Stephen Hall ruled that the vision he took was too distressing to be shown to the public gallery, but as Tim Clarke and The West Australian's court reporter Shannon Hampton explain, they didn't need to see the vision to get a picture of what was happening. This episode was my pleasure to produce! I have been following Jane Means, of www.janemeans.com on Instagram for a while and I was totally enchanted by her business. If Jane Austen had a business, it would be this! I am being totally serious! So when I contacted Jane and she agreed for an interview, I was on cloud ribbons and paper. When Jane and I finally spoke, we covered all sorts of areas, including how she got to start her wonderful business - out of a penchant for gift wrapping and all the lovely details that go into it, despite people assuming that such a business would not work. Starting as one person in 1995, she employs a team of 20 today and is much in demand. For me, it was an incredible opportunity to dig deep into her social media strategy and it was a mini thrill to find out that Jane manages her social media herself - I do believe that the founder/owner of a business is THE best person to manage social media. Nobody loves the business as much as the owner!Since this episode is an interview, I do not have a full script written, but I do have below all the links that were mentioned -The podcast episode will give you all the details. Here are all the links mentioned in this episode. If there is anything I have missed, do please get in touch with me.Jane’s website can be found hereFollow Jane on Instagram hereThe app that Jane uses to freshen up her appearance during very busy periods of work is called FaceTune and can be found hereThe app that Jane uses to visualise her Instagram feed is UNUM - it can be found hereThe key take aways from this episode, at least for me, are:Do not take your business super seriously, humour is key to building an audience!Understand your audience and serve them with exactly what it is they are looking forIf you are managing social media yourself, invest in improving your photography skillsIf YOU are the brand, share what is important to you and whyTwitter is great for building a relationship with the pressDo not underestimate the importance of local contacts for building your businessThank you for tuning in to Your Social Media Journey. As always, you can find me on social media, especially Instagram - where I discuss not only social media tactics and strategies, but also my own experiences in starting and running a business. Episode 9 is by far our favorite episode of season 1. This episode is very focused on Crazy Jane's mind. After her Karen persona gets pulled back into the Underground (this is what they call Jane's mind), none of the personalities wants to go to the surface (what they call being the dominant personality). This causes her body to go into a catatonic state. Robotman is able to enter her mind through Negative Man's energy. Once inside her mind we see that some of the personalities look like Jane and others do not. We are introduced to a few new personalities that haven't gone to the surface. Most of them do not like going to the surface as they find the real world stressful to deal with. We also find out that the personalities are able to commit suicide by going to the well. One of the personalities, Miranda, had done that. Miranda's station is filled with lots of dark and gory imagery. Jane is at the end of her rope and is going to visit the well to end it all. Robotman is able to track her down to the well and helps her face the root of all her problems. As a child she was sexually abused by her father. She repressed all those memories until years later she was again sexually abused by a priest at a church. This explains her hatred of the church in the Nurnheim episode. With Robotman's help, Jane is able to stave off the suicidal tendencies for now. When Jane pops back to the surface we discover the others had some sort of kerfuffle. I imagine we will find out what happened with them in a future episode. Do you agree with us that this is the best episode so far? Do you also think it should have been aired sooner in the line up? Let us know in the comments below. We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts. If they are good, we will use them on the show. Time for another Morgendorks! This week, we’re covering “Arts ’n’ Crass.” When Jane drags Daria into a poster contest about student life at the dawn of the millennium, it’s all working out splendidly—until they bump heads with Ms. Li and Mr. O’Neill about what constitutes acceptable speech in a school setting. Where do Daria and Jane draw the line? (Spoiler: Right through their painting, it turns out) Can Helen be any more badass? (Spoiler: No) And is Ms. Li’s depiction just a liiiittle bit racist? (Spoiler: Uh … we really don’t know for sure) We also look into what has happened when students in the real world have fought for their right to free speech in public school. Some of it’s awesome, some of it’s infuriating. Links: Student Press Law Center | Copywrong: Students Often Clash with Administrators Over Copyright Law ACLU | Tinker v. I want to review for you an excellent though often very sad novel by Diane Chamberlain, Necessary Lies. There are two primary narrative voices. Ivy, a fifteen year old girl who lives on a tobacco farm and takes care of her intellectually challenged sister, Mary Ella, her grandmother whom everyone calls Nonnie, and her nephew, Baby William, Mary Ella’s infant son. Jane, the other narrator, is a recently employed social worker for the state of North Carolina, and Ivy, her sister and the household are some of her first clients. Jane has just married a doctor who is not at all happy with her taking a job at all, let alone one in which she deals with welfare recipients and even people of color. Mary Ella has her baby out of wedlock and refuses to name the father. Mary Ella is a beautiful blond girl who is intellectually challenged, and although the reader is not informed of this until fairly far into the novel, she has already been sterilized (under the pretense of an appendectomy) due to her low IQ, and her being on welfare. Nonnie, the grandmother has agreed to the sterilization because she thinks the family simply cannot afford another baby, and May Ella shows no signs of changing her behavior with the boys who chase after her. Mr. Gardiner, the owner of the tobacco farm allows the family to live for free in a tiny shack on the farm; he also allows a black family headed by a mother, Lita, to live in a similar shack with her three sons, one of whom is almost completely blind. Nonnie lives in constant fear that Gardiner will force them to leave the house and to stop giving them produce (which they refer to as a little something extra). Both girls work on the farm for very low wages, and even the grandmother, much hampered by arthritis, works some in the tobacco barns stripping and wrapping tobacco leaves. It is only after some weeks on the job that Jane learns of the eugenics program in North Carolina. She is just beginning to gain the trust of Ivy when she is told by her superior that the state is preparing to take away Baby William. She comes to learn that Mary Ella has already been sterilized, although Mary Ella has not been told, tricked into the procedure and told that she simply had an appendectomy. Ivy is the good girl who worries about the promiscuity of her pretty sister and the declining health of Nonnie. Mary Ella has a wonderful relationship with her infant son, but she is neglectful and the State decides that Baby William is in danger living in the household.Soon, Jane is fighting on two fronts, fighting her husband and his family over her work which they find unnecessary and demeaning, and her superiors who think themselves entirely justified in performing sterilizations without informing the victims for a variety of trumped up reasons, but most of it coming down simply to their being on welfare. Although Ivy does well in school and seems quite bright to Jane (certainly bright enough to keep her family together and fed), IQ tests brand her her as low normal, and when she, despite her success in school and her general rule of staying away from boys also turns up pregnant, Jane is instructed by her superiors to draw up a petition for sterilization of Ivy at the time she is to give birth to her baby. Ivy has been in love with the Gardner’ youngest son for much of her childhood, and when he insists that by pulling out before ejaculating, she will not/cannot get pregnant, she defers to his “wisdom”. Because Ivy is a minor, she does not need to consent to the sterilization or even to be told about it. Her grandmother is essentially forced into giving permission by the threat of losing her home and her welfare checks. When Jane informs Mary Ella that she has been sterilized and threatens to tell Ivy what will happen to her when she gives birth, she is summarily fired for insubordination. Her husband wants out of the marriage, and it seems her life is about to come completely apart.I have probably already told too much of the story, but there are a number of wrinkles I have not touched on and that make for a very complex ending to this novel. What is very clear is that Diane Chamberlain has thoroughly researched the eugenics program in North Carolina, and as she says in her author’s note: From 1929 until 1975, North Carolina sterilized over seven thousand of its citizens. The program targeted the “mentally defective,” the “feebleminded,” inmates in mental institutions and training schools, those suffering with epilepsy, and others whose sterilization was considered “for the public good”. While other states had similar programs, most of them stopped performing state-mandated sterilizations after World War II, uncomfortable over comparisons to the eugenics experiments in Nazi Germany. North Carolina,, however, actually; increased its rate of sterilizations after the war. While in the early years of the program, the focus was on institutionalized individuals, it shifted that focus to women on welfare later on and became a tool for reducing the welfare rolls. It also became more and more targeted to African Americans. By the late fifties, 64 percent of those sterilized were African Americans. While it is obvious that Chamberlain’s main focus in this novel is the eugenics program, she creates very believable characters and spins out an intriguing story. I applaud her bravery in informing those of us who are not as historically educated as we should be about this woeful program. I know I have painted a bleak picture here, but this is really an excellent novel and one that deserves a wide audience. I have been talking about Diane Chamberlain’s 2013 novel, Necessary Lies.

Air Date May 22, 1995. In the two-hour, nail-biting, cliff-hanging season final, Brooke and Billy announce their wedding plans to everyone. In Hong Kong, when Alison hears about their engagement and about the job Hayley Armstrong offered her, Alison finally realizes that Brooke had set her up to keep her away from Billy. Alison then quits her job, flies back to L.A., and after unsuccessfully trying to stop the wedding, she starts drinking again. Jake returns from the hospital and is not pleased to find Jess running his bar in which he fires Jess, who in an unconvincing tone, denies anything to do with the punks who shot Jake. Jo gives Jess a job at a construction site, but soon begins to see his possessive side of him. When Jane's business is foreclosed, she uses aggressive methods to gain a new investor, Richard Hart, and falls in love with him. But Richard's estranged wife, Mackenzie, doesn't approve of Jane's meddling in their business. With Michael still in jail, he recruits Sydney to follow Kimberly to find evidence that she framed him for beating her, while at the same time, Kimberly is haunted by a mysterious phantom she identifies as 'Henry' who tells her that she must kill all of her enemies. In a surprising twist, Dr. Peter Burns returns, just released from prison, and helps Michael with his legal troubles in exchange for Michael to help Peter keep his medical license from a review board. Meanwhile, Matt and Paul's renewed relationship takes a shocking turn when Matt gets arrested after Paul's wife is found murdered. But when Paul appears and identifies Matt as being the killer, Matt realizes (way too late) that Paul had been setting him up as the fall guy for his wife's murder this entire time! After Jo turns down Jess' marriage proposal, he beats her savagely, which leads to a major fistfight between Jess and Jake atop the roof of a three-story construction site, which ends when both of them fall off... When Peter romances and tricks Kimberly into helping him get back his medical license, she goes over the deep end and, in a berserk rage, she abducts Sydney when she finds her following her, and rigs large incendiary bombs to destroy the Melrose apartment complex and everyone in it... once and for all! In today's episode of the Mastering Life Podcast, your host Paul Lowe interviews Jane McGrath. Jane first encountered cancer in the 70's when she learned that her father had lung and oesophagal cancer. He went through all the treatments: the chemotherapy, the surgery, and the radiotherapy. Unfortunately, he died in 1981 an event that started her research trips about cancer. Then in 2009, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She said that when you have cancer, you will know it. She had panic attacks, her hormones are doing things that aren't her and she got checked right away. She went to all three treatments: the chemotherapy, the surgery, and the radiotherapy. She had some severe after-effects from the chemo, even now. Tune-in today to hear Jane's inspiring story. KEY TAKEAWAYS Journal. When Jane and her five chemo friends were undergoing the treatment, they each kept a journal. It has a dual purpose. Firstly, it was sort of a 'Dear Diary' for them. Also, it could be a trigger for their care team, if one day they weren't feeling well - if something seemed wrong they weren't sure what. They could then look back and see what happened within the last week; and thereby a bit of detective work - CSI-type training - just so to see if there's something they could deal with straight away. Support. Family. Friends. Online support. You do not need to feel alone. You will have support and you will soon find out who your true friends are. Power of the mind. Does a strong positive mind that contributes significantly to overcoming cancer? Yes, it does. It depends on how you work with your mind. Mindset is very particularly important to start with. Meditation. Go somewhere quiet. Put on the earphones and meditate - it's brilliant. Try it once, and you will just see what it's like. Diet. When you look at what diets we had 200 years ago, or go back further, our ancestors and what we are eating now. It's the American diet versus the Mediterranean diet because what we should be doing is the Mediterranean diet; but being half-American, Jane says she can say this. The American diet is such rubbish. It should be blown out of existence along with certain people. It's fast food. Environment. It is so difficult nowadays because of so much pollution. Toxic stuff around you that contributes to cancer. Be mindful of those. Awareness. Be careful of what you eat, what you do. What's around you. Awareness and the power of awareness is certainly the starting point for any journey or any learning no matter what it may be. Childhood. Everything goes back to what you have done and eaten in childhood. What causes cancer? Bad sugar. Bad fat. You need to be aware of that. Yes, you can do something about it - have less. The more you can get rid of - or change it to something, more beneficial, more healthy - you are doing so much for your body and your body will pay you back a thousand-fold because it will help you, and it always will do. But you've got to help it. Your immune system is going to be shocked. Your immune system has got to come back. And that is the way you should do it, look after each other. Treatments. - Specifically chemotherapy, chemotherapy drugs are so toxic. If they got a tiny bit of that on their hand, or any part of their body, it burns right through like acid. If you need to go to the loo after you have been treated, there's a special loo to that other people can't go. You have to be separated. That is in a nutshell. It is killing cancer cells and really good healthy cells that look after you. no one knows the percentage of which goes. Surgery. They only need to take off what needs to be taken off. Radiotherapy. No problems with it. It was a bore for Jane. I have this diagnosis. What do I do? The first thing to do is sit down, calm down, go to your happy place, and sit there for a little while. Then, I would say, how do you want to go forward? do you want to go tell your family, tell friends, work people or first thing to do is get one of your best friends, when I say friends rather than family because the family can be overpowering at this stage. Get a level-headed friend who can be your big support who can go to appointments with you and stuff. There are some things you need to sort out but the main thing is how you're feeling at the moment. Look at your diet. The sooner you start pumping lovely fresh fruits and vegetables. The sooner you will be helping your immune system to fight what is gonna go on. Take out the old rubbish and take in new ideas and procedures. Start eating well and start doing exercise. Advice: Say, always I can work on that or I can work with that. Yes, I can change it. Write down what you eat in a week. How much of that is good? How much of that is bad? Get rid of the bad. Explore new foods, explore new lifestyles. Go for lovely long walks on nice days. Don't sit in front of the television or the computer all day. All or so many things you can change which is very easy and you can do it yourself and you will then sit back and say I did that. Oh, yes I'm really feeling good about myself. It is amazing psychological warfare takes part and say, yeah, I'm doing this, and I'm gonna keep doing it. And I think from that you would say, I'm having such fun doing this because I'm meeting all sorts of wonderful people. BEST MOMENTS "Yes your mind has got so much in there. Most thoughts can be rubbish. Don't worry about it. Let them be there. Recognize it and then move on. Don't try and get all your thoughts out because the more you try and get them out, the more you're thinking, I can't get them out." "You are not your mind but it is a key part of you. It is imperative that you treat your mind with respect. But you've got to give it guidelines as well." "I don't like calling it a battle. It is too aggressive... I actually prefer to think of it either as a journey or even better as a challenge, but I know exactly what you're saying. " You have a symbiotic relationship with your body and with your mind. You've been together in your life and you will be together until death. You need to be able to work in sync. And if you can do that in any form, you're on a winner." "But the one thing I wanted to do is say, I'm feeling like hell, I want to not have other people feeling like hell. I want them to be able to take something from this." Getting to know Jane den Hollander AO - Vice Chancellor of Deakin University AustraliaSee below some amazing insights from our interview with Jane.In 2007 Jane remembers watching Steve Jobs holding up an iPhone. She remembers wanting one and when she arrived at Deakin the university bought in and implemented Big data and technology in this manner across the campus 2 years later. No-one had iPhones, iPads, trapped at their desks. She knew the next generation of students would have iPhones, so this was a necessity for Deakin. The massive change that it was involved Big discussion, everyone had a say. LIVE the future was born, learning, ideas, value and experience. Ambition was to be the best university at the digital frontier. Most proud of the university for embracing this collectively. Education for the jobs of the future and research that makes a difference for the community that Deakin lives in and serves. Total embracement of a student centred plan. When Jane arrived 8 years ago Deakin was sub 500 ranked for universities worldwide, think Oxford, Cambridge, Yale etc. Jane initially wanted to move the ranking from 500 to sub 400 by 2020, and at the end of 2016/17 would you believe the ranking was down to 215. To date they have jumped another 2 places to 213 and the new goal by the end of 2020 is to be sub 200.Jane mentions being in the top 2% of universities in the world is an amazing achievement. With over 4,000 permanent and contract staff and many more casual staff all bought into the vision of the university it has been an incredible result. They changed their approach to teaching: What are the skills students need for their 2nd and 3rd job, how do you assess those skills and then devise the curriculum. What does the student need at the coalface, skills that are enduring and modern content.Deakin was recently again rated number 1 for learning and student satisfaction in Victoria. This was a dream result. The reputation for innovation and tech has been a success and contributed to the university being seen as nimble, innovative and a sense of knowing where it is going. We know who our people are and where we are going.Jane mentions a university education is a great idea, producing life long skills. Many in the start-up culture come from a solid university or TAFE training base. At Deakin she has noticed many students aren't interested in big corporate culture, they are much more interested in pursuing their ideas and entrepreneurship, hence the birth of Deakin SPARK. SPARK helps students take an idea and learn how to take it to market, the ultimate proof is someone wants to buy. What a great initiative. Some of the pitches can receive funding and assistance in getting off the ground. The sooner you try, the sooner you know and you never know until you try. Deakin have some awesome units on entrepreneurship.Jane is super passionate about diversity in the workforce and thinks there should be more of a push for women in engineering and IT and men in nursing and education for example. Here's a quick message from Jane: Deakin is one of a new breed of global universities – agile, dynamic and innovative. From our beginnings as Victoria’s first regional university 42 years ago, to our current ranking among the top three per cent of universities worldwide, we have had a consistent goal – to work in partnership with local and international industries, governments, communities and educational organisations to make a difference in the world.Find out more about Jane here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-den-hollander-33416748/https://twitter.com/VCdeakinFind out more about us here:Our linkedin page - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandon-burns-44423748/Our facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/enterprisemonkey/Our twitter page - https://twitter.com/enterprisemonkOur instagram page - https://www.instagram.com/enterprisemonkey/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I'm very different now with it. Every single day I'm aware so if I feel the anxiety is sort of coming through. If I'm feeling anxious, I understand the physiological response, my body response, so I'm able to work through the steps to calm myself down and do the cognitive therapy to calm myself down. Thoughts on Breathing I have two different ways of breathing. So we have the regular way of breathing, but then we also have our diaphragm breathing and I'm working on my public speaking. I've learned how to speak in an effective way and breathe so that I'm not holding my breath and then talking a lot and then running out of air. So it's interesting you ask that because I've been working for the past few months on improving my breathing when I speak. Suggested Resources Book: The Little Book of Mindfulness: Ten Minutes a Day to Less Stress and More Peace by Dr Patrizia Collard App: Calm Bullying Story This incident happened in 2014 and it actually involved the studio and myself in which I was protested for a week. So this lady had driven by the studio and she looked through the windows. We weren't open at the time and she saw a room full of brass balls. When we have classes, we close the blinds, but during the daytime the blinds are open so you can see inside. And there was a poster of me on the window where I'm holding the pole. It's one of our marketing posters. I'm looking happy and smiley. She was deeply offended and it triggered her. It actually triggered a negative memory she had when she was younger. So in her youth, she unfortunately had a terrible childhood in which she was living on the street, became a prostitute and she was a stripper. And seeing the studio and me on the pole triggered it. So she felt she needed to have the studio shut down, that it wasn't OK and that what I was doing was wrong and she was very upset with it. So first she went on Facebook and in Oakville there is a Facebook group about Oakville which has about 8,000 members on it and that's where she started. So she posted that she needed people to band together to shut down the pole dancing studio and that what I was doing was wrong and I was teaching women to become prostitutes. So she projected by what was happening with her. I was, I was mindful enough to realize what was happening, but we had a situation where I had somebody who was not healthy and happy and if I were to attack her back he would make things worse. So I just, I stood up and I spoke about what the studio was about with more of an education point of view. And then I didn't respond back after that. Well, because there's 8,000 members involved, people jumped on and it went on for like three days of online shaming towards her because she's attacking so people want to fight back. So I had to tell all my students do not participate, do not get involved, leave it be, because we don't want to feed the beast, the social media beast. So my students were very wonderful about it and it faded away. So we didn't participate. we stood back from it. So then after it all calmed down, she decided to stand in front of my business with a sign saying, prostitution is wrong. She would arrive around 9:00 AM and would leave around 4:00 PM. The police arrived the first day and they talked to me about it. And in Canada we have the charter of rights. So she was fully allowed to do that, to stand on public space in front of my business, to promote her agenda about prostitution is wrong and I totally agree, prostitution is wrong. But that's not what we're doing. Whenever people would walk by, she would tell them stuff about me, she would slander, she would say negative things. So the police on the very first day pulled me aside and said, do you have a choice on how you want to handle this? You can either attack back, which will make things worse or you can ignore and we highly recommend you ignore. And so I also spoke to one of our local MPs, a member of parliament, because we all know politicians get protested quite a bit and he advised the same thing. He goes, don't engage, don't participate, don't even look at her when she arrives, go home. And that's what I did every single day. She chose to protest against me during the first week of July, which was the hottest week of the summer. So I went home every single day when she arrived, I would say see you later, get in the car and go home and hang out with my kids and she would stand out in front. So I didn't really, I didn't want to hear what she said about me. I didn't want to know. I just knew, eventually she would move on and in fact, by the end of the week, she called me up on the phone and left a voice message saying that her work was done. My apologies for causing any hardship, any pain. She said I need to move on now. So I'm actually very proud of how I handled that. I was being bullied, but I chose a different path of how to handle it instead of fighting back, I chose peace and not to engage.

December of 2016 saw the arrival of the first ever Pacific Women’s Sports Leadership Program, held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The event was designed for women involved in sports as administrators, managers, volunteers, employees, or board members. The event was planned and held to empower and enable those women through providing practical tools to address the challenges that women in particular face in the Pacific region. This episode features Jane Livesey and Olivia Philpott, the two women who were the catalysts and visionaries behind making the event happen. You'll also hear from Colin Pidd of Conversant, one of the supporters of the event. You’ll be inspired and encouraged by what happened and learn about plans for future events. Events are about connections and relationships as much as they are about learning. Twenty women from around the Pacific came together for the Pacific Women’s Sports Leadership Program. These amazing women were from 13 different sports organizations and brought a great diversity to the event. And though they learned a great deal about how to amplify and expand their leadership, they also enjoyed the connections with others who filled similar roles to theirs. It was a great sense of relief and encouragement to know that they were not alone and that other women are in the region, seeking to make the same kinds of contributions they are. You can hear how the organizers, Jane Livesay and Olivia Philpott saw the women come together at the event and learn how the support and relationships born there are being carried on beyond the event. It's on this episode of Leaders, Bosses, and Bastards. Women in sports leadership: A growing tribe that is making a difference in the Pacific When Jane and Olivia envisioned the Pacific Women’s Sports Leadership Program, they had an idea of the kinds of things they wanted to see come from the event. But both of them say that the event exceeded their expectations. They were incredibly impressed by how generous the 20 participants were in sharing themselves and their experiences. Together they all grew and learned, but more importantly, they found inspiration in each other’s stories and perspectives. Participants left the event with encouragement to return to their respective roles and apply their lessons-learned to motivate more women into sports leadership. This episode is a recap of the event as told by its organizers. You’ll be encouraged and inspired. When women in sports leadership come together, it’s an amazing thing. This conversation with some of the people behind the Pacific Women’s Sports Leadership Program shows what can happen when people with a vision join together to stir up something more. The women who came together did so to develop their leadership skills through sport and to encourage more women to move into leadership roles for the sake of combating issues such as gender-based violence, gender norms, and gender equality. Their impact did not go unnoticed and will continue to be felt. The growing number of women in sports leadership in the Pacific demonstrates that change is coming. Currently, women are underrepresented when it comes to politics and overall leadership positions in the Pacific region. This leadership program is poised to become an integral part of providing positive female role models in the Pacific region. One of the organizers, Olivia Philpott says, "It is important for us to see more women moving into leadership roles, to improve diversity in decision-making, investment in targeted programs for women’s sport, health and well-being, and to provide role models for young girls.” Sport is one of the primary areas in which these kinds of changes will be sparked - and that’s a good thing for everyone. Jane Rigler opens a lot of doors for me. She's always been generous with her teaching opportunities, her performances and her contact; the last time I spent time with her, she told me about an upcoming performance with her friend and colleague Elizabeth Hoffman - and that Elizabeth would be a great podcast subject. When Jane speaks, I listen! This podcast is the result of that contact, and it's a great one. I really enjoy interviews where we start diving into people's motivation and concept development, and Elizabeth was more than willing to dive into that stuff. Additionally, we get a glimpse into the actual workings of a composer's career - it is never a straight line, and it is always packed full with self-education and exploration. This is an interesting chat in many ways, but it was also fun because I feel like I got to know Elizabeth a lot over the course of the 45 minutes. I hope you do as well! You can find out more at her personal NYU website, and check out her CD (which I will continue to rave about...) at the site for the work: Intérieurs harmoniques. Enjoy!
When Jane was pregnant with our first child, we had some very close friends who were also pregnant with their first child. Our due dates were so close together that we were in the hospital at the same time having our babies. What joy we had as we greeted our first born – a healthy baby girl! Our friends also had great joy as they greeted their first child…but it was mixed with sorrow and concern as their baby had a number of special needs that would last a lifetime. Today, we celebrate mothers, a gift of God’s love to us! But in those places of our brokenness where this celebration brings sorrow, the pain of loss, and perhaps even tears - or even a bad conscience - God would touch us anew with Christ’s love that has overcome all brokenness and made us family in Him! Let’s celebrate!
When Jane and Michael, the children of the wealthy and uptight Banks family, are faced with the prospect of a new nanny, they are pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins. Then there is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where the last of five coveted "golden tickets" falls into the hands of a sweet but very poor boy. He and his grandpa then get a tour of the strangest chocolate factory in the world. The owner leads five young winners on a thrilling and often dangerous tour of his factory.
