Then swim under the lane line to the next lane and repeat the process until athletes have completed a lap in six lanes for a total of 300 meters. Please include advice about: *passing when someone is coming back down the same lane ( possibility of 3 abreast) *does it matter if you pass on the right or left of the athlete? *touch & kick off OR flip when returning down the SAME lane *your technique for getting under the lane rope and heading off again *explain the mind set, as I'm used to open water races and I want to dominate Thank you in advance! I listen to your podcasts during long, indoor bike sessions. You make me feel a part of the triathlon world. I get your email notifications for Grit2Greatness Endurance. I hope the following specifics aid you in your response to me. I don't like adding the anxiousness of "how" to execute the swim, so any advice is welcome! The race is May 3, so I have time to practice what you suggest. I've done 2 serpentine swim races and the biggest issues for me were: *passing through the congestion of swimmers returning down the lane *swimmers resting at the wall and thusly blocking the ability to push-off/flip-turn *choosing which side to pass a swimmer on that is meandering Dear Ruth, This serpentine swim format presents some unique challenges, but with the right strategies, you can navigate the congestion smoothly and maintain momentum throughout the race. Here are a few strategies: 1. Passing Through Lane Congestion Strategic Positioning: Start strong to secure a front position and avoid major bottlenecks early on. If starting later, be mentally prepared for more congestion. Breath Control & Awareness: Practice bilateral breathing to keep an eye on approaching swimmers. This helps with timing a pass effectively. Speed Bursts: Rather than attempting a sustained faster pace, use short, controlled accelerations to overtake when space opens up. 2. Dealing With Swimmers Blocking the Wall Adaptable Turn Techniques: If a flip turn isn't possible, opt for an open turn with a powerful push-off at an angle. Underwater Exit: If the lane rope transition is congested, avoid surface-level interference by streamlining under the resting swimmers while transferring to the next lane. Pre-race Observation: Before starting, assess common bottleneck areas—know which lanes tend to clog near the walls and mentally prepare alternate strategies. Communicate: Before the race, talk to the 3-4 swimmers ahead of you to come to a working agreement that if you get your toes tapped, move to the side at the next wall. 3. Choosing the Best Side to Pass a Meandering Swimmer (if you can't pass at the wall) Reading Body Language: Observe patterns in how the swimmer moves—does their meandering have a rhythm? Predict their next movement before passing. Firm Commitment: Once you initiate a pass, sticking to your chosen side with confidence to prevent hesitation that could slow you down or cause contact. Gentle Tap: If someone is repeatedly veering into her path, a subtle tap or verbal signal can alert them without disrupting their rhythm. Practice these strategies in training sessions with other swimmers to simulate race-day conditions. This combination of communication, awareness, adaptability, and assertiveness will make all the difference. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Interview: Colorado's Ride with Bill Plock Bill Plock, Ride Director for Colorado's Ride is going to talk to us about this epic experience, Colorado's Ride. Session Note This is an easy ride for a reason. Focus on a smooth pedal stroke and holding around 90 rpms. Manage your intensity based on heart rate rather than power. Going faster or further on this session will likely hinder your recovery from prior sessions and your ability to get the most out of future sessions. For the HCP (high-cadence pedaling) efforts, pedal as fast as you can pedal without bouncing in the saddle. Try to achieve up to about 115 rpms. During HCP, use very low resistance (low gear and/or reduced power). The objective is smooth and fast leg speed not generating power. Fun Segment: Triathlon Guilty Pleasures Segment: Triathlon Guilty Pleasures – Rank That Ridiculousness! Welcome to Triathlon Guilty Pleasures, where we confess our quirkiest habits, indulgent routines, and those oddly specific rituals we swear help us race better. But this time… I'm going to read six scenarios and rate each one on a scale from 1 to 5 for absurdity—with 1 being totally understandable and 5 being what is even happening?! Rich, are you ready to let the judgment begin? 1. The Matching Gear Mania “Every piece of race day gear has to match—from the kit and shoes to the water bottles and gels. Color coordination is power.” Stylish? Absolutely. Necessary? Debatable. 2. Zone 2 = Trash TV Time “Treadmill sessions are scheduled around reality TV shows. If I'm not running, I'm not watching. Endurance meets entertainment.” You're either building aerobic fitness… or judging cupcakes on Netflix. 3. Sunglass Snobbery “I have sunglasses for every training mood—‘aero mode,' ‘cloudy intervals,' ‘post-race selfies,' and more.” Fashion meets function… but mostly fashion. 4. The Post-Race Shower Snack “Sometimes I bring a PB&J into the shower after a race so I can eat and rinse off at the same time.” Fueling meets multitasking… or madness. 5. Pre-Race Burger Ritual “I have to eat a cheeseburger the night before every race. No burger, no PR.” Is it carb-loading or superstition? Yes. 6. Bike Cleaning as Therapy “I clean my bike before every long ride, even if it's already spotless. It calms me.” Clean drivetrain = clear mind. Listener Prompt: What's your triathlon guilty pleasure? DM us, tag us, or confess anonymously—we'll read the best ones in a future episode and rank the ridiculousness! Closing Line: No matter how wild, weird, or wonderful… if it keeps you training, it's totally valid. Mostly. Closing: Before we close, I want to wish Caroline Thanks again for listening this week. The Four Corners saw a little more moisture than usual falling from the sky last month. But the area remains in moderate drought. There's hopeful news, though. Snow has fallen in the mountains for the past few days, with at least a foot reportedly dropping on Wolf Creek Pass, Red Mountain Pass, and Coal Bank Pass in southwestern Colorado.

Tonight's guest, Phil, grew up exploring the forests and wild places of Wyoming and Colorado. After spending so much time in the wilderness of those two states, he was convinced he knew about all of the creatures that called the wilds of those two states home. One night in 2011, however, he found out how wrong he was about that. That was the night he found himself 15 feet from a 10 foot Dogman, while he was driving through a high mountain pass, in Colorado, called “Wolf Creek Pass”. We hope you'll tune in and listen to him share the details of what happened that fateful night. Premium memberships are now available! McGillivray oversaw the course throughout the race earlier in the day, taking runners across the starting line and helping to ensure their safe arrival on Boylston Street. This is McGillivray's 51st consecutive completion of the Boston Marathon and the 36th of which he has completed at night after seeing to his race day duties. “It doesn't feel so long ago that I was 18 years old, sitting on the curb at mile 21, wondering if I would ever get a chance to finish the Boston Marathon. If I could go back and tell my younger self that he goes on to finish that day and 50 more editions, I can't imagine his reaction,” said McGillivray. “I'm grateful for the more than a dozen friends and colleagues who joined me on the journey to the finish line today. I had to dream big to get to this moment, and I couldn't do it without my community and my family that support me every step of the way.” The weekend featured two other special moments for McGillivray. On Saturday, Team With A Vision inducted McGillivray into their hall of fame during a dinner at the Westin Copley Place. Team With A Vision pairs blind and sighted runners together to complete endurance races across the country. Their efforts support the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which delivers professional, peer, and volunteer support to over 1,200 individuals each year, giving them the support they need to live with dignity and independence. All funds raised support MABVI's statewide vision rehabilitation services, including 34 low-vision support groups, Assistive Technology and Training Centers, and 400 volunteers matched 1:1 with blind individuals. In addition, McGillivray was a featured speaker during the Boston Marathon Expo, where World Marathon Challenge champion Becca Pizzi interviewed him about his long history with the race. He shared photos, videos and stories with the crowd, and signed copies of his books for attendees at the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation booth following the presentation. McGillivray is one of just a handful of runners who have marked half a century or more of completing the world's most famous marathon. Alongside his rich connection to this race, his running resume includes completing the World Marathon Challenge (seven marathons in seven days on seven continents,) nine Ironman Triathlon World Championships, a 1,250-mile run along the U.S. East Coast in 1980 to again benefit the Jimmy Fund, a 24-hour run (120 miles,) a 24-hour bike (385 miles,) and a 24-hour swim (27 miles.) He triathloned around the six New England states by swimming one mile, biking 80 miles and running 20 miles every day for 32 consecutive days. Over the span of his life, he estimates he's run more than 150,000 miles. At first glance, you might see Colorado as just another state in the western part of American. But with a closer look, it has as exciting of a past as places like New England or Washington D.C. and New Orleans. The history that Colorado has to offer is more than just the history of our past, it holds the history of the planet deep in the mountains. Geologists for centuries have rushed to colorful Colorado to get a glimpse at the rocks that the planet is created with. But Colorado also has a history that is different than most, a history of travelers, miners, and people migrating through. It was home to many, but normally not for long. The constant motion and migration of people to the area made Colorado a western hub for mining, traveling, and darkness. Because it does seem that wherever humans go to settle darkness follows them. The history of Colorado at a second look is full of darkness. Starvation in harsh winters, murders of neighbors, stories from the mines, and myths of tiny creatures that wander through the aspen trees and up the mountainsides. From the darkness to the happy tunes of John Denver's Rocky Mountain High and C.W.McCall's Wolf Creek Pass, Colorado is a lot of things, Mysterious and everlasting are only two of those things. Ken Nordine - Yellow (1966) Colors is a "word jazz" album by voice-over and recording artist Ken Nordine. It was commissioned by the Fuller Paint Company to write radio advertisement spots, but after a few commercials became popular, it evolved to become an album of 34 songs. Each track personifies a different color or hue. Colors (1966) began as a short-lived series of radio commercials written and voiced at the behest of the Fuller Paint Company. The spots ran as scheduled; however, at the end of the campaign listeners began calling radio stations to request they be rebroadcast. Once word got back to Nordine, he rewrote the scripts -- sans sponsor of course -- and composed a few new hues to the initial order of ten. To accompany these quirky paeans, Nordine wisely chose the multi-talented Dick Campbell as his musical director. Campbell had contributed to the broadcast ads, providing apt sonic representations of Nordine's oft unconventional literal interpretations of a predominantly visual medium. Each selection runs roughly 90 seconds and represents a specific shade -- most of which are variations of those found on the aforementioned primary spectrum. Brother Theodore - Introduction & Bernice (1959) Influential Jewish German-American cult comedian whose monologue style was often referred to as "stand-up tragedy." His early recordings were often under the name Theodore prior to Merv Griffin giving him the title "Brother." Well-known for television and film appearances into the 1990s, including the variety programs of Griffin, David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, and Joey Bishop. What kind of Freudian nightmare is it that he is one of the two things I recall about the porn movie Gums? National Lampoon - Deteriorata (1972) Written by Tony Hendra. He was Spinal Tap's manager. The English fellow. Music by Christopher Guest (who played Nigel Tufnel) and sung by Melissa Manchester, who had big hits later in the decade with "Don't Cry Out Loud" and "You Should Hear How She Talks About You". Ken Nordine - Burgundy (1966) The Last Poets - E Plurbus Unum (1972) Ken Nordine - Green (1966) Jack Palance - Black Jack County Chain (1970) Ken Nordine - Olive (1966) Brother Theodore - Willow Landscape (1959) Ken Nordine - Beige (1966) The Last Poets - Niggers are Scared of Revolution (1972) Ken Nordine - Maroon (1966) Brother Theodore - Curse of the Toad (1959) Ken Nordine - Ecru (1966) Ken Nordine - Scratch (1979) Ken Nordine - Chartreuse (1966) James Brown - King Heroin (1972) Ken Nordine - Turquoise (1966) C W McCall - Four Wheel Drive (1975) From that Wikipedia: In 1973, while working as a creative director for Bozell & Jacobs, an Omaha, Nebraska, advertising agency, Fries created a Clio Award-winning (1974) television advertising campaign advertising Old Home Bread for the Metz Baking Company. The advertisements featured a truck driver named C. W. McCall, who was played by Dallas, Texas, actor Jim Finlayson. The waitress named Mavis Davis was played by Dallas actress Jean McBride Capps. The commercial's success led to songs such as "Old Home Filler-Up an' Keep on a-Truckin' Café", "Wolf Creek Pass" and "Black Bear Road". Fries wrote the lyrics and sang while Chip Davis, later of Mannheim Steamroller, wrote the music. McCall is best known for the 1976 #1 hit song "Convoy", which came at the peak of the CB fad in the United States. It sold over two million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in December 1975. Though McCall is not a one-hit wonder, "Convoy" has since become his signature song. McCall first charted the song "Wolf Creek Pass", which reached #40 on the U.S. pop top 40 in 1975. At least three other songs reached Billboard's pop Hot 100, including "Old Home Filler-Up an' Keep on a-Truckin' Cafe", "'Round the World with the Rubber Duck" (a pirate-flavored sequel to "Convoy"), as well as the environmentally-oriented "There Won't Be No Country Music (There Won't Be No Rock 'n' Roll)". A dozen McCall songs appeared in Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, including the sentimental "Roses for Mama" (1977). Ken Nordine - White (1966) The Last Poets - Mean Machine (1971) Ken Nordine - Flesh (1966) King Crimson - Elephant Talk (Live) (1984) Ken Nordine - Azure (1966) The Red Shadow - Understanding Marx (1975) Ken Nordine - Puce (1966) The Last Poets - The White Man’s Got a God Complex (1971) Ken Nordine - Magenta (1966) Velvet Underground - The Gift (1968) The Residents - Give It To Someone Else (1980) Annette Peacock - Succubus (1979) Godley and Creme - Ready For Ralph (1981)
