Joining Matthew Appleby on the latest HortWeek Podcast is Pippa Greenwood, the well-known horticulturist and broadcaster, who is HTA horticulture manager, where she supports the membership as well as the broader garden and greenspaces industry.BBC Gardeners' World television programme and has been a regular panellist on Gardeners' Question Time on BBC Radio 4 since 1994. She also was the gardening consultant on the ITV series Rosemary and Thyme in 2003–2006. Greenwood was awarded an honorary doctorate by Durham University.A big part of Pippa's role at the HTA is advising on plant health and biosecurity, "translating" plant health information for the grower members, where, she says, "my heart really lies". And Greenwood has great sympathy for the issues confronting growers at the border: "I always think when you look at what happens at the border...I can feel and really empathize with the frustration of the grower who's imported some plants or a garden centre who's imported some plants that then get held and inspected, sometimes taking longer than they might feel is necessary. But there is a good reason behind it."Reflecting on the recent costly destruction of plants due to a - some suspect faulty - risk assessment for Pochazia, she says: "So obviously every loss is, in my mind, of extreme significance. But what can be done? We as the HTA are regularly and currently in communication with Defra and others about trying to increase not only reporting, but also increase the chances of someone feeling that it's safe to report or if they find something on their nursery or that if something does come in"If you've imported some plants and they've got a pest on it and they're impounded, then in theory, you should be able to claim back from the nursery that they originated from. I'm not saying that's easy. I'm not saying that you get all your money back, but you often can get quite a bit of it back. But the HTA is very aware of the fact that money and time and morale actually sometimes as well is lost over situations like this."Pippa discusses how growers cannot claim compensation for plants impounded or destroyed during border checks, while animal importers can.She recently took charge of the HTA's New Plant and Grower of the Year awards and she urges members to put themselves forward, or nominate others, to be "noted, celebrated and allowed to blow their own trumpet". Innovations she has introduced includes blind judging to ensure winners are selected "on the basis of quality".The deadline for entering Grower of the Year Awards is 25 July 2025.The closing date for the New Plant Awards is 17 May 2025 and amid controversies over 'remote' judging of plants at the Chelsea Flower Show, Greenwood is insisting that judges examine the plants in person at the National Plant Show (18-19 June, Stoneleigh). Chris talks with Dr. A. Michael Powell and Shirley Powell about their authoritative work in Trans-Pecos botany and Dr. Powell's role in recognizing and formally describing Ovicula biradiata, or "Wooly Devil," a previously unknown genus of plant recently discovered in Big Bend National Park. The find generated a spate of high-profile new headlines, such as this one from the Smithsonian magazine:https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/meet-the-wooly-devil-the-first-new-plant-genus-discovered-in-a-national-park-since-1976-180986117/Chris and the Powells also talked about Dr. Powell's many books on the flora of the larger Big Bend region, and their work in the herbarium at Sul Ross State University. This scientific collection of plant specimens is the fourth largest in the state.
It's Thursday, February 27th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Ugandan Muslims stab Christian evangelist Morning Star News reports hardline Muslims stabbed a Christian evangelist in eastern Uganda earlier this month. The attackers stabbed 39-year-old Robert Kasozi in the stomach and beat three of his co-workers. This came after Robert engaged in open-air preaching and led a 75-year-old widow to Christ. Angered by this, the widow's relatives attacked the Christians and tore up their Bibles. Thankfully, the man is recovering from his wounds in the hospital, but has vowed to file a case with the police upon his return home. Authorities did not arrest any of the Muslim attackers at the time though some were known to area residents. This was the latest of many instances of persecution against Christians in Uganda documented by Morning Star News. Northern Ireland to threaten religious liberty Northern Ireland is considering legislation that could threaten religious liberty. Lawmakers for the region may consolidate existing so-called “equality” laws into one new law. The Christian Institute warns this could undermine religious liberty and “detrimentally affect the work of churches.” Officials previously used equality laws to target a Christian bakery for refusing to participate in celebrating sexually perverted lifestyles. Sam Webster with The Christian Institute told lawmakers, “Laws can be passed very easily, but legislators don't necessarily always see the implications further down the track for other protected characteristics.” Isaiah 10:1 says, “Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, who write misfortune, which they have prescribed.” Trump's budget passes the House In the United States, before the vote on President Donald Trump's budget on Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson made these remarks. JOHNSON: “We promised to deliver President Trump's full agenda, not just a part of it. We're not just going to do a little bit now and return later for the rest. We have to do it now. And that ‘one big, beautiful bill' will include securing the border, restoring America's energy dominance, dismantling the deep state, growing our economy, ensuring we don't have the largest tax increase in US history, and a return to peace through strength. “We do not have time to waste. The American people are expecting us to deliver on this, and we will. House Republicans need to unite so we can keep this process moving forward. And I think they all understand that we're working right now to get everybody on board. I think everybody wants to be on this train and not in front of it.” The resolution passed 217-215 with no Democrat support and one Republican voting against it. The proposal lays a framework for enacting President Donald Trump's legislative agenda. It cuts $4.5 trillion in taxes and at least $1.5 trillion in spending and raises the debt ceiling by $4 trillion. The resolution would allow for the defunding of Planned Parenthood which receives hundreds of millions of dollars from the government each year. The proposal heads to the Senate where it must get bipartisan support. Georgia Supreme Court upheld Heartbeat Law The Supreme Court of Georgia once again upheld the state's heartbeat law. The court ruled 6-1 to uphold the Living Infants Fairness and Equality Act last Thursday. The law bans the killing of unborn babies with detectable heartbeats with some exceptions. The latest ruling overturns a lower court ruling in a case brought by abortion activists. Heartbeat laws in other states have been upheld by their respective supreme courts, including Florida, Iowa, and South Carolina. Amazon outpaced Walmart Amazon, the e-commerce giant, outpaced the retail giant Walmart in quarterly revenue for the first time. Amazon brought in $187.8 billion in revenue during the fourth quarter of last year while Walmart brought in $180.5 billion. Walmart has been the top revenue-generating company each quarter for over a decade after outpacing Exxon Mobil in 2012. Walmart is still projected to lead in annual sales, but Amazon is close behind. Decline of Christian identification has slowed A new report from Pew Research found the decline of Christian identification in the U.S. has slowed. Sixty-two percent of U.S. adults identify as Christians currently, down from 78% in 2007. That percentage fell to 71% by 2014 and 63% by 2019. However, the share of self-identified Christian adults has hovered between 60% and 64% over the past five years. Non-Christian religious identification stands at 7.1%, up from 4.7% in 2007. And identification as religiously unaffiliated stands at 29%, up from 16% in 2007 but appears to be plateauing. New plant found in Big Bend National Park And finally, a new species of plant was discovered at a U.S. national park for the first time in 50 years. Park staff members first encountered the plant in Big Bend National Park in Texas last year. The National Park Service noted that the plant's “fuzzy foliage and interesting flower looked like nothing they had seen before.” Researchers analyzed the plant, concluding it is unique enough to be classified as a new species. The plant is officially called Ovicula biradiata and belongs to the same family as daisies. Researchers are also investigating potential medicinal applications of the plant, including anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Psalm 104:24 says, “O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The Earth is full of Your possessions.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, February 27th, in the year of our Lord 2025. A primary sector advocacy group says a review of new plant and animal products is critically important for New Zealand farmers. A backlog of more than 100 applications are awaiting approval, and it could take up to four years to clear the queue. Now, a dozen primary sector businesses and groups are calling for swift action to clear the backlog. Animal and Plant Health New Zealand Chief Executive Liz Shackleton told Mike Hosking the Government has one chance to get it right. HeLIX Exploration PLC (AIM:HEX) chairman David Minchin takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the latest developments at the company's Rudyard helium project in Montana. Minchin confirmed that production is on track to commence in the second quarter of 2025 following the acquisition of a processing plant at a cost of just $500,000—saving 90% of the capital expenditure required for a new plant. The plant will be located next to existing gas infrastructure, minimising costs and accelerating timelines. Minchin explained that Rudyard offers a nitrogen-helium mix that is “incredibly easy to process,” with no CO2 or water management challenges. He emphasised that the project is ideally situated in North America, providing direct access to the world's largest helium market, which urgently needs new supply. Additionally, Helix is updating its reserves and resources, with Petroleum Consultants LLC conducting a scoping study. Minchin noted this will feed into a financial model to guide the company's growth over the next decade. He also highlighted progress at Ingomar, which has the potential to become the first large-scale hydrogen discovery in the USA, in addition to its high-grade helium resources. Within little more than a year of opening Joliet, Lion had announced four rounds of layoffs company-wide. Disney's Country Bear Jamboree has a much longer history than many people realize. What's next for the country bears in 2024, plus Disney Imagineering is slowly slipping further away from Walt Disney's approach to park theming. The Next Chapter in the Long History of Country Bear JamboreeCountry Bear Jamboree will be closing for a complete overhaul on January 27 and will re-open in the summer (no specific month yet) as the all-new Country Bear Musical Jamboree. As first announced at Destination D23 last summer, the Country Bears will return with a new show that pays tribute to the Opry style shows of Nashville. Disney promises quite a few Easter eggs throughout the show (including a familiar tune), as the bears sing new and reinterpreted Disney songs in different country music genres.Country Bear Jamboree has a long and interesting history. Walt Disney originally conceived the Country Bears concept in the 1960s to be part of the grandiose Mineral King Ski Resort project in California. This, of course, was never actually built. But the Country Bears idea was revived for Walt Disney World where it became one of the most popular marquee attractions when the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971.Editorial Rant: Current Disney Imagineers Continue to Stray Further from Walt Disney and Closer to UniversalOf interesting note in the Disney news story is that Disney continues to refer to this area -- including Tiana's Bayou Adventure -- as Frontierland. So, unfortunately, Disney Imagineers are ignoring trademark Disney Parks theming and slipping further towards a Universal type of fragmented-not-too-concerned-with-lands approach to design. I have often said that the current group of Imagineers is among the worst in Walt Disney World history, so hopefully at some point the sloppy Imagineering can be cleaned up and returned to earlier Disney standards.A lazy Imagineer is not a good Imagineer. So Bob Iger, please take a look at the lack of basic creative spark and ingenuity in your current Disney Imagineering Department.--Disneyland Lunar New Year Foodie GuideTop Food Picks from the 2024 Lunar New Year Event at Disney California AdventureFrom January 23 to February 18, the Lunar New Year Festival will turn Disney California Adventure Park into a vibrant destination with characters, entertainment, festive décor, merchandise and food. In the US, the regulation of food products, including the ban on certain items, falls primarily under the jurisdiction of two key agencies: the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the top 10 foods banned in the US and why. The list includes unpasteurized milk, Kinder Surprise Chocolate Eggs, sassafras oil, Four Loko and Ackee as well as shark fins, sea turtles, Japanese puffer fish, beluga caviar and haggis. Reasons for the bans vary, but some foods are banned because they are endangered species, while others are banned because they contain toxins that can be dangerous when consumed in large amounts. The team compares the foods banned in the US to those banned in Europe and while there is some crossover, it all comes down to the culture and ethical considerations of each region. Also in this episode, Sydney talks about the launch of Kraft NotMac&Cheese by The Kraft Heinz NotCo. and TheNotCompany, Inc. (NotCo). This plant-based iteration, a first in the US, leverages NotCo's AI-driven technology that crafts plant-based substitutes indistinguishable from their animal-based counterparts. Kraft NotMac&Cheese is a fresh take on the classic blue box, responding to the booming demand for plant-based options. The Kraft Heinz NotCo is confident that its new product, free from artificial dyes and made with fava bean protein and coconut oil powder, will not only preserve but enhance the brand's legacy with its creamy, dairy-free alternative. The new Kraft NotMac&Cheese is set to hit stores nationwide, completing its rollout by early 2024. While the team is critical of the product's name and packaging, they are certain that Kraft NotMac&Cheese will cater to both plant-based eaters and carnivores alike.Read the full article here:Top 10 Foods Banned in the USNotCo and Kraft Heinz Unveil Plant-Based NotMac&Cheese For more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured

Christchurch residents are being asked to decide what they want to do with their green waste over the next couple of years while a new compost plant is being built. Options include sending it straight to the dump or shipping it off to the North Island. After years of complaints about the putrid smell from its existing plant, Christchurch City Council has agreed to relocate it, but that could take up to five years. So now it's looking at the best short term option to clear the air. Rachel Graham has more.

763: Diane Blazek on New Plant EvaluationsOrganizing trials of new plant varieties with professional judges throughout North AmericaIn This Podcast: We are introduced to the organization behind the AAS logo found on seed packages and seed catalogs everywhere. Diane Blazek explains how different plants and plant breeders get recognized as standout winners amongst their peers and earn this logo through All American Selections' annual plant trials. Diane is the Executive Director of All-America Selections and National Garden Bureau, she has been deeply (and happily!) immersed in gardening from an early age. From growing up on a small family farm in Missouri to her small suburban lot in the Chicago-land area, she is passionate about everything green. After spending 15 years with Ball Publishing, Diane moved to take on her current role where she can be even closer to the end consumer. Both All-America Selections and National Garden Bureau are in an exciting period of growth and influence both inside and outside the industry with innovative ideas and progressive programs for consumers, garden communicators, public gardens, and a full range of growers and retailers that have benefited all segments of the horticulture industry.Visit www.urbanfarm.org/AllAmerican for the show notes and links on this episode!Need a little bit of advice or just a feedback on your design for your yard or garden? The Urban Farm Team is offering consults over the phone or zoom. The closings and openings coming up at Walt Disney World, including one that will upset a lot of guests. This plus EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival top food picks, more Disney After Hours events, new DVC villas and more Disney travel news.Openings and Closings at Walt Disney World Trail's End is Closing at Fort WildernessIt looks like Trail's End has Reached the End of the Trail. For anyone who loved the buffet-style all-you-care-to-enjoy dining experience at Disney's Fort Wilderness Campground, you won't have that unlimited dessert bar anymore.Trail's End will be closing in April and converted into a quick service marketplace. No more table service at Trail's End Fort Wilderness.Disney's BoardWalk Inn Club Level Concierge Lounge is ClosingThe Concierge Lounge at Disney's BoardWalk Inn is closing for refurbishment on March 11 until at least the end of April. How this might affect you even if you hadn't booked Club Level there.Narcoossee's is Reopening at Disney's Grand Floridian on April 1After a seven-month closure, Narcoossee's is reopening with a new design concept of land and sea. Will the new enhancements mean for a better dining experience? We're hoping it will, but the signs are not all positive that Disney has addressed past issues at Narcoossee's. As far as the menu is concerned, it's not entirely new--which is disappointing, as the menu was a big issue. The Bisque is back, but with a new tableside presentation. There are also two new starters: the Beef and Ricotta Tortelloni (with brown butter, parsnip puree, and sultanta raisins) and the Ocean-inspired Charcuterie Board featuring ahi tuna pastrami, charred octopus, and house-made sausage from the sea. For the main course, Chef Noah's signature dish is the Blackened Redfish. This is served with a crispy chorizo-sunchoke hash with hominy, Florida sweet corn, and red pepper rouille. Plant-based dishes include a Roasted Vegetable Paella featuring market vegetables, cannellini beans, and preserved artichoke finished with charred Meyer lemon. Land-based fare includes a new Dry-Aged Pork Ribeye Chop served with creamy goat cheese-potatoes and turnips with onion jam and a touch of fig jus.Chefs have kept Narcoossee's staples like the Plancha-seared Scallops with Parisian Gnocchi and Surf and Turf featuring filet mignon and butter-poached lobster tail. The dessert course kept their trademark Almond-crusted Cheesecake with Lambert cherry sauce and Chantilly cream. New dessert items include The Berry Pavlova -- artfully crafted with Florida fresh berries and citrus delicately placed over meringue and yuzu crémeux and finished with a tableside pour of anglaise. And the Pineapple Bavarois (roasted-pineapple house-made blackberry-buttermilk ice cream). The wine list has been refreshed with pairings for each dish and the bar team has anew cocktail program, inspired by the Victorian era. Disney is touting a signature Empress Lime Gimlet, a modern twist on a classic gimlet with Empress Gin, Rockey's Botanical Liqueur, and cold-pressed lime. There are non-alcoholic cocktails as well.--San Fransokyo Square appears at Disney California Adventure Park in Summer 2023Pacific Wharf in Disney California Adventure park is transforming into San Fransokyo from Big Hero 6. It's a fictional mash-up of San Francisco and Tokyo. The story goes that ss the tech industry began to emerge and the local fishing trade fell on hard times, entrepreneurs came together to reinvent the seaside canneries into a vibrant, multicultural district of neighborhood restaurants and local shops. An iconic landmark of the area will be the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge, which will span the tide pools linking San Fransokyo Square to the Paradise Gardens Park obelisk. When the transformation is completed this summer, you'll find familiar favorites like soups in freshly baked bread bowls, plus many new Asian-inspired selections. The new Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería draws inspiration from its tri-cultural influences with signage in English, Japanese and Spanish. This week on the Extra Serving podcast, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches, and Leigh Anne Zinsmeister spoke about the latest in restaurant earnings. This week saw several more companies report including Starbucks, Yum Brands, and Chipotle Mexican Grill. The team discussed their main takeaways from the earnings reports and what they have in common. Next, the team discussed Chick-fil-A’s new plant-based protein. The proprietary menu item is made of cauliflower and was in the test phase for four years. The team discussed what that means for the industry and whether or not plant-based proteins’ time has passed. Finally, the team discussed our Chicken Showdown. The latest in our showdown series focuses on chicken chains of all kinds, from rotisserie to tenders to fried chicken sandwiches. We picked nine chains that have something to say, and now readers get to pick their favorite. This week’s guest is Nick Chavez, the chief marketing officer for KFC.
Walt Disney World has a serious problem in Star Wars Galaxy's Edge and there's no easy solution. Our take on this, plus the Garden Rocks concert line-up, a lengthy Disney pool closure and top picks for Valentine's goodies at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.Do Disney Parks Have a Star Wars Problem? There's trouble brewing in Galaxy's Edge and it's not coming from the Dark Side. After months of persistent rumors and speculation about the value and experience of Disney's Galactic Starcruiser, Disney has announced that it was forced to cancel several Galactic Starcruiser dates in the summer and fall months due to low occupancy, which could be a troubling sign for the hotel's future. People who had booked were offered half-off to book again on a future date. Speculation has been everything from the cost, to the characters involved to the repeatability of the experience. For me, it's also an issue of the guest experience, or rather the pricey and intended immersive experience being ruined by obnoxious and other annoying guests who typically ruin things for others on virtually any Disney attraction. This type of behavior has gotten worse since Covid as the entitled few have been frequently ruining it for all--so much so that Disney has changed its acceptable guest behavior policies and publicized the fact. No matter what the reason, is there any way to fix the problem? For us, it's not the price alone: it's the experience. If you're paying that kind of money for an immersive experience, the risk of having it jeopardized by someone filming all the time and not taking part, is a no-go. In my opinion, Disney should ban all guests from bringing phones or any kind of devices, except in your room. Anyone acting out of accepted standards should be jettisoned through the airlock. Make this clear up front. --Garden Rocks Concert Lineup for the 2023 EPCOT International Flower & Garden FestivalThe Garden Rocks Concert Series Line-up is coming into view for the upcoming EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival in March.
