At the time, he was traveling around France covering the World Cup Rugby matches, and after Australia's loss to Wales, he sent us the article “Anscombe's the man as clinical Wales crush Australia's hopes at the World Cup”. You were to send in the answer to this question: how could Australia be out of the finals? The answer is, to quote Paul's article: “Should Fiji beat Georgia with a bonus point on Saturday (30 Sept), Australia will be out before they take to the field on Sunday afternoon against Portugal in Saint-Etienne. It would be the first time in the 36-year history of the competition that Australia has failed to progress to the knockout stages.”And they were out: Fiji beat Georgia 17 – 12.In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question “How can we learn to be humble in life?”, which was suggested by Jayanta Chakrabarty from New Delhi, India. The winners are: Salehin An Nahiyan, a member of the Shetu RFI Listeners Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has been described as charismatic and intelligent. However, he is accused of abandoning grace and dignity when he upsets the status quo and pushes the boundaries of what the rugby-loving world deems fair. When he questioned the referees' decisions in a viral video rant, which he said he made for consumption by his inner circle, rugby authorities did not believe his version, and he was slapped with a ban. The confident rugby coach on the international stage who is not afraid to stir controversy is not the Rassie that broadcaster and author David O'Sullivan encountered during their many meetings to write Rassie's biography, "Rassie: Stories of Life and Rugby." In an interview with Biznews, O'Sullivan said that instead of the charismatic, loud man he expected, he encountered a very shy Erasmus who was not keen on public interactions and did not believe he had a story to tell. O'Sullivan says he would like Rassie's critics to read the book to understand that the way Erasmus did things was maverick and different, but it wasn't cheating. He said the traffic light system, which caused another stir after the 2023 World Cup Rugby match between South Africa and Scotland in Marseille, was nothing new and had been used by Erasmus during Currie Cup matches. O'Sullivan said he hoped that Rassie's legacy would be that he brought about an effective transformation in South African

Host Carl Lewis is joined by Rapport editor Tinus van Staden and SA Rugby journalist Dylan Jack. They discuss the Springbok selection for Australia this week and what their selection criteria will look like for the rest of the Rugby Championship until the World Cup in France in 2023. Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber on Monday named a 34-man squad for the Australian leg of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, with the uncapped Canan Moodie earning a call-up for his first tour in a settled national squad. Nienaber said the touring squad, which features a good mix of youth and experience, was in line with the standard travelling squad for the Rugby World Cup and he believed that they were the right group of players to achieve what they set out to do in the two Tests against Australia in Adelaide (Saturday, 27 August) and Sydney (Saturday, 3 September). Nienaber said he would make changes to the squad for the two Tests against Argentina in Buenos Aires and Durban as he looks to give his expanded group of players a chance to prove themselves with an eye on the Rugby World Cup which will be hosted in France next year. “We have been working with a large group of players for the last few months and we believe this will pay off in the long run as we look to expand our depth for the Rugby World Cup and beyond,” said Nienaber. “Since we are going on tour, however, we will take a group of players that is more in line with the size of a Rugby World Cup squad, and our thought process is that we will have two groups of players – one who will participate in the Australian leg of the competition and another for the Argentina matches. “This way we can manage the players as well as possible on tour, while at the same time ensuring we continue to develop our depth and give the players opportunities to prove themselves with a little over a year to go before the Rugby World Cup kicks off.” Moodie, who was called up to the squad as utility back cover following the suspension handed to wing Kurt-Lee Arendse for a dangerous tackle, is the only uncapped player in the group and will travel with the Springboks for the first time, providing cover at wing and fullback. His presence also fills the void left by Cheslin Kolbe, who is on the road to recovery from a broken jaw, which will see him only return for the last Test against Argentina. With Bongi Mbonambi (hooker) ruled out for four weeks after suffering a knee injury at training last week, Deon Fourie will serve as back-up to Malcolm Marx and Joseph Dweba, while Damian Willemse's versatility in the backline will see provide cover at flyhalf, centre and fullback. “Bongi has been ruled out for four weeks, but Deon, who is an experienced hooker and flank, has been practicing his lineout throws with us, so we are confident that he will be able to fill that void for us in these matches,” said Nienaber. “We are also excited to see how Canan slots in during the next few weeks and to see how he adapts to our structures and systems, and we believe he has the skills to slot in for Kurt-Lee and Cheslin. Just over ten years ago, the final whistle blew on the highly anticipated FIFA 2010 World Cup held here in South Africa. Expectations were high and the question remained before that kick off: could SA deliver. Deliver it did, staging a remarkable global event which bought SA goodwill and recognition for the event and the manner in which it was held. Crime fell, footballing tourists flocked to the stadiums and investment in fan parks and playing areas around the world suggested a new era of nation building on the back of other successful sporting ventures like the 1995 World Cup Rugby victory. Sport and infrastructure were seen as powerful catalysts for transformation and economic growth. Having spurned the country in 2006 in favour of hosts Germany, it was surely inconceivable that Nelson Mandela would be dismissed twice. South Africa broke the bank to host the event. Both financially and in playing its ‘Madiba Magic’ trump card there was a sense of inevitability that the tournament would finally be hosted in Africa. But at what cost? And was it worth it? SA invested billions of rands in new build projects: upgrades of airports and stadiums; in public spaces and public transport systems – some of which have operated successfully and other that have yet to operate since the event. It was a massive gamble diverting public funds that critics argued – with some justification – could have been better spent on housing, infrastructure and public services. The debate raged before, during and after the event. In this episode of the TTPod, we explore the legacy of FIFA 2010. We try and consider in an objective way the means of assessing this legacy. To help us, we are joined by eminent historian, and best-selling author of Empire, War and Cricket in South Africa, Dr. Dean Allen. An Englishman who has made his home South Africa, Dean was part of the assessment team employed by the City of Cape Town in 2010 to survey different perspectives from some of the tournament’s leading figures. He has taken an ongoing interest in the assessment of the legacy as a historian, author and public speaker. We are delighted that he accepted an invitation to join us on the TTPod and discuss his perspective and findings. His views on transformation through the ages are compelling and thought-provoking. The death last week of boxer Patrick Day, four days after he was stretchered out of the ring in a coma, is the latest reminder of how vulnerable sportsmen and women are to traumatic brain injury. During the latest Ashes series the Australian batsman Steve Smith was temporarily retired for one test after being struck on the helmet by a bouncer. The current World Cup Rugby has been affected too, with Welsh fly half Dan Biggar withdrawn from a game against Uruguay having received head injuries in two previous matches. In this edition of Discovery, Roland Pease talks to engineers at Imperial College and Loughborough University using the latest techniques to understand the dynamics of blows to the head, and to improve helmet protection. And to experts and Rugby players at Swansea University seeking to make precision measurements of real-life head movements with the help of gum shields stuffed with electronics.
