SLAP SHOT In the gritty steel town of Charlestown, things look grim: the local mill is about to lay off 10,000 workers, and the minor league hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs, faces its final season after years of failure. To try and save the team, frustrated player-coach Reggie Dunlop unleashes the Hanson Brothers—three bruisers known more for fists than finesse—whose violent style electrifies the fans. Dunlop capitalizes, turning the struggling team into a rough-and-tumble spectacle that packs the arena. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week on "Shat the Movies," we're hitting the rink with Slap Shot (1977), the ultimate hockey comedy! Join us as we dive into this rowdy, irreverent film about a struggling minor league hockey team and their eccentric players, led by the unforgettable Paul Newman. We'll break down the film's mix of humor, sports action, and its over-the-top characters. Whether you're a hockey fan or just in it for the laughs, get ready for a fun discussion about this cult classic that still scores today! Plot Summary: In the small New England town of Charlestown, the local mill is about to lay off 10,000 workers. The town's minor league hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs, is doing no better. After years of failure, this will be the team's last season. Exasperated player and coach Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) lets the club's recent acquisitions, the Hanson Brothers, play. The brothers' actively violent and thuggish style of play excites the fans. Dunlop retools the team, using violence to draw big crowds. Commissioned by Jon W. A decade under the influence

Flying out the gate like the Ultimate Warrior, today we gots 7 more 70's movie reviews, and here…they…are!
first up is (The Yakuza 1974) With Robert Mitchum (I'm just starting the whole chapter about him in Roger Eberts book- Life Itself) Ken Takakura, The best friend of Logan in Logan's Run, The Dad who hired Mr. French in Family Affair, and Stanley from the Golden Girls are all here with Mitchum in this. Is this Movie good, we like Director Sydney Pollack, and Writer Paul Schrader, but can they pull it off? Let's see, shall we.
Next up is (Adventures of the wilderness family 1975). We are continuing our odd ass journey of Robert Logan's nature/adventure films. This is the one with 2 sequels, kind of afraid of them, oh my, this is silly enough.
Onward to (Bullet Train 1975). Ashes liked this one best for it's rad historical context. Also important to watch as stupid Americans, to learn that SPEED totally ripped this one off. Filmed entirely on location on the bullet train between Tokyo and Hiroshima, also Ken Takakura is back here. More of Ken to come.
Travel with us now to skull island and (King Kong 1976) It's got issues and it kinda sucks, but also with that, there's a lot of cool people here, bein weird, especially Jeff Bridges. Directed by John Guillermin after he made a ton of money for the studio people when we made (The Towering inferno) in 74 so they threw a ton o dough at this thing here, Wait John directed Shaft in Africa, heck yeah!
Moving on we gots (Slap Shot 1977)
George Roy Hill is our director here, with one of my favorite screenwriters Nancy Dowd, who if someone could just chuck some dough at us and this pod I would love to interview, while she is still around to interviewed plz, to all you rich benefactors out there. Is something wrong with me that I think the Hanson Brothers are simply adorable.
Next today we review (Every which way but loose 1978)That punching movie with the Orangutan Clyde, also Maude's shotgun scene is priceless. Gee it's also kind of an anti Fascist picture, not as fiercely anti fascist as the blues brothers, but I think it still counts, there is much nazi punching. Hey our direct here James Fargo made the 80's cult masterpiece Voyage of the rock aliens in 84, can't for the Vintage video 80's podcast to cover that one, also VVP stay out of our lane eh.
finally today we review yet another made for TV 70's movie that snuck some greatness under the radar (See how she runs 1978) Joanne Woodward plays a teacher who just wants to run in the Boston Marathon but oddly has to battle the world and even her family just to do so!
Drop us a review and all the dang stars if you like what you hear, and thank you muchly for listening.

In 1977, the movie Slap Shot starring Paul Newman was released about the crazy exploits of a fictional minor league ice hockey team. The plot was so unbelievable the movie flopped but later became a sports classic, partly because all the crazy stories in it were based on a real team, the Johnstown Jets. All the characters in the movie were based on real people, like the three Hanson Brothers, (not the musicians) and their arch-nemesis Bill “Goldie” Goldthorpe. They fought each other, the referees and the fans. This is the story of the Johnstown Jets, one of the strangest teams of all time. If you'd like more Sports Bizarre, become a member of Bizarre Plus. Fr. Andrew Budzinski spoke on the importance of prayer and our relationship with Christ for a proper understanding of our identity. BIO: Fr. Andrew Budzinski is pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Wayne and Vocations Director for our diocese. A native of South Bend, Fr. Andrew grew up at Holy Family parish, attended the University of Notre Dame, and while a parishioner at St. Pius X in Granger, sensed a call to the priesthood. His fifteen minutes of fame was as the Leprechaun mascot for Notre Dame during his junior and senior years. However, he is extremely sensitive about his Leprechaun-like height and baldness and doesn't like to talk about this dark period of his life. Immediately before entering seminary, Fr. Andrew worked in the radio industry in South Bend. It was the perfect storm of spinning “MMM Bop” by the Hanson Brothers and “If You Wanna” by the Spice Girls every night that convinced him he was called to a different life.

Taylor Hanson is the middle brother in Hanson, the band he's been performing in with his brothers Isaac and Zac since he was nine years old. So it's not surprising that this Oklahoma boy had a palate changing culinary epiphany while touring in Europe when he was 15. That epiphany revolved around a perfectly ripe, locally grown tomato, and anyone who's ever picked a pink, mealy tomato slice off their burger knows that commercially grown tomatoes leave much to be desired. Host Rachel Belle chats with Dr. Harry Klee, a horticulture professor who has worked for nearly three decades to develop a flavorful, affordable grocery store tomato. And he answers the question: why are supermarket tomatoes so bad?? And the Oklahoma Historical Society joins the show to share the story behind Oklahoma's official state meal. It's that time of year when the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, it's early May so WHAT does that mean?  Of course, it means the NHL Playoffs are just beginning!  And what better way to commemorate the kick-off for professional hockey's playoff season than to revisit one of THE Most Beloved Hockey Movies of All Time….which happens to star one of THE Greatest Movie Stars of All Time, Paul Newman.  He stars as player/coach Reggie Dunlop of the minor league hockey team, the Charleston Chiefs – they're a raucous group filled with goons and/or boozers but they MIGHT have a chance to win this season thanks to their latest addition of the Hanson Brothers.  Jeff Carlson, Steve Carlson, and David Hanson co-star as the Hanson Brothers in this raunchy, raucous sports comedy directed by the legendary George Roy Hill who previously gave us Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid along with The Sting.  Host: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
