In RFI English journalist Melissa Chemam's article “DRC opposition leader Moïse Katumbi officially launches presidential campaign”, she wrote about how many candidates were in the field; among them was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. That week, RFI English journalist Jessica Phelan joined Alison Hird and Sarah Elzas on their excellent podcast, Spotlight on France, to tell us how Champollion, in 1822, came closer than any other scholar of the day to de-coding Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. He already knew an Egyptian language that was spoken during Rome's occupation of Egypt, and Champollion used that language to work backward, teasing out some of the meanings in hieroglyphics. You were to tell me the name of the language he knew that helped him with his discovery.The answer is: Coptic. Coptic was the primary spoken language in Egypt from the 3rd century AD in Roman Egypt; it was supplanted by Arabic following the Muslim Conquest of Egypt in 639 AD. In this episode, we talk to Leslie Midgley, executive vice president and CEO at the Texas Land Title Association. She joins our hosts Steven Stout, FASAE, CAE, and Katy Markert for an engaging conversation focused on leadership, her passion for the association community, mentorship advice, leadership challenges, and the importance of being involved in an organization like TSAE. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at TSAE's New Ideas Conference in Fort Worth.  Better By Association is produced by Association Briefings.   Show notes Leslie Midgley joined the staff of the Texas Land Title Association over 40 years ago and has been involved in every aspect of the association since that time. Since 2001, she has been at the helm, serving as Executive Vice President and CEO, the chief paid position of the 2,500+ member organization. Prior to that, as Administrative Director and then Vice President of Operations, she was responsible for managing the association's day-to-day operations, supervising the TLTA staff and overseeing all programs and services. Leslie has a bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management from St. Edward's University in Austin. In 1999, she successfully completed the Certified Association Executive (CAE) program through the American Society of Association Executives of which she is also a member. She served for a number of years on the Board of Directors of the Texas Society of Association Executives and was Chairman of the Board of that organization in 2005-2006.  She has been honored by both the title and association industries with the following awards: Texas Land Title Association President's Award (2002, 2016) and Texas Society of Association Executives Distinguished Executive Award (2013), Chairman's Award (2007), Professional Excellence Award (1990) and Making a Difference Community Service Award (2016). Additionally, she has been very involved as a volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association, Central Texas Chapter, and served on their Board of Directors from 1997-2004, was Board President in 1998-1999, and received the Jack C. Kern Award for Special Service in1998. She has also been an active member of Impact Austin, a philanthropic organization that awards financial grants to Austin area non-profits. Leslie is a member of the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Central Texas and served as that organization's President and Board Chair in 2016-17. Leslie lives in Austin with her husband Mike. They enjoy cooking, traveling and spending time with their grandkids.

That week, Nîmes' Maison Carrée, a Roman temple from the first century CE, was added to the Unesco World Heritage List. It is France's 51st World Heritage site.Just a little over 30 kilometers away from Nîmes is another city that boasts numerous Roman monuments – and World Heritage Sites. On this week's episode we sit down with Founder of AOK Physical Therapy, Dr. Alyssa O'Krent. Dr. O'Krent graduated from St. Edward's University prior to earning her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from University of Texas Medical Branch. Three years into her career she earned a board certification as an Orthopedic Certified Specialist, which puts her in the top 6% of PTs nationwide for evidence-based training. After a 9 year career in corporate orthopedic physical therapy, caring for 2-3 patients at a time, Dr. O'Krent saw an opportunity to transform the patient experience by providing 1:1, specialized care. She started AOK Physical Therapy to create a more enjoyable and effective way to return her patients to doing what they love. Not only did the creation of AOK Physical Therapy create a better experience for patients, but it also drastically improved the quality of Dr. O'Krent's life and gave her the opportunity to spend time doing what she loves as well. He is known for leading objective, ethical and collegial approaches focused on patient and community needs, and incorporating evidence-based and best practice methods. He is one of a few researchers to study EMS system design. His published doctoral research focused on patient-centric EMS system design. Dr. Williams is a former paramedic, EMS commander and researcher. Previous leadership positions include the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Fitch & Associates, and Austin-Travis County EMS. Dr. Williams is faculty at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and serves as a senior improvement advisor. He served as faculty in emergency health services at The George Washington University School of Medicine and public safety management at St. Edward's University. He supported professional development programs, including the National Association of EMS Physicians Quality and Safety program, the American Ambulance Association Ambulance Service Manager Program, and the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch Communication Center Manager Program. Andre Cook is entering his 14th season as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas.  He has led St. Edward's to nine winning seasons in his tenure with an overall record of 221-152 including a program record 30 wins in 2018-19. That season The Hilltoppers snagged the Heartland Conference Regular Season title, Heartland Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional Final while being ranked as high as #2 nationally during the season. Cook was named the 2019 Clarance Gaines Award winner, given by CollegeInsider.com to the Division II National Coach of the Year and NABC District Coach of the Year. Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and received her M.B.A. from St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. Jennifer was the CFO of a large health and human services firm in Austin and later founded a small business consulting firm in Steamboat Springs, working with a variety of non-profit organizations and small businesses. Beginning in 2014, Jennifer assumed a full-time role as Chairman and CEO of Steamboat Institute. Jennifer is a graduate of the Leadership Program of the Rockies and served on that organization's Advisory Board for several years. In 2013, she and her husband, Rick Akin, received the “Leaders in Action” award from the Leadership Program of the Rockies in recognition of their work in founding and establishing The Steamboat Institute as a nationally recognized leader in advancing conservative thought and policy. Jennifer is a member of the Advisory Boards for the Bruce D. Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization at CU Boulder and the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise & Markets at the University of Maryland. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Rebekah's Angels, a non-profit organization helping children with post-traumatic stress disorder, founded by Boston Marathon bombing survivor Rebekah Gregory. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys competing in triathlons and trail running with her Alaskan Husky sled dog rescue, Cruiser. She has completed 3 Leadville Trail 100-mile Races and the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run. She has also completed 27 consecutive Boston Marathons and is a proud member of the Boston Marathon's exclusive Quarter Century Club. Making each mile count, Jennifer has raised nearly $160,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society along the way. Thomas (Tom) M. Evans, PhD. is a university president, board director and a mission-focused leader with more than 25 years in Catholic higher education. Today, Evans is guiding strategic and transformational growth as president of the University of the Incarnate Word, the largest Catholic university in Texas with a global enrollment of approximately 10,000 students and an endowment of more than $173 million. Since beginning his term, Evans has spearheaded great advancements, including an increase in high-level donations. He created and developed UIW's Strategic Plan, which put in place a clear vision and priorities for the future, and the Campus Master Plan, which guides the development of UIW's San Antonio campuses. In 2019, he secured the transformational acquisitions of Founders Hall, a 350,000-square-foot building on 10 acres, increasing the footprint of the historic, land-locked campus by 20 percent. The anchor tenet is the Liza and Jack Lewis III Institute of the Americas, which Evans launched as an international hub dedicated to promoting better relations and understanding. In 2020, he oversaw expansion of the Brooks campus, home to the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine, which now totals 265,000-square-feet across seven buildings on 23.5 acres. Academically, UIW is a college of distinction. Evans has opened new pathways for students from Minority-Serving Institutions to continue their education through agreements and partnerships with Hispanic-Serving-Institutions and an HBCU. He has prioritized support for high-value experiences, such as study abroad, undergraduate research and capstone courses. Evans also established the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, dedicated to ensuring the University continues to serve and elevate the dignity of every person. Since 2019, UIW has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report among the top universities in the nation providing social mobility to its students. Under Evans leadership, UIW's pandemic response has been considered the “gold standard” among large, local entities. His oversight of the institution's financial approach, lead to a budget surplus and pay increases, despite pandemic challenges. In 2021, UIW's economic impact was valued at $524 million economic impact (ICUT). Prior to UIW, he also served as president of Carroll College in Helena, Montana, and associate vice president at St. Edward's University.
