They struck twice in four minutes just after the half-time break through loose-forward Josh van der Flier and wing Mack Hansen to give Ireland a 10-point buffer that was too much for the Boks to overhaul.   The Boks had more than a decent foothold in the game, but the lack of a regular goal-kicker hurt them badly.   The seven points that were missed off the tee by Damian Willemse and Cheslin Kolbe would have swung the game in the Boks' favour.   The Boks were also guilty of being creatively blunt in the red zone and it's something they desperately need to fix ahead of next week's clash against France.   Ireland have not only kept a 10-year home unbeaten streak against the Boks, but have beaten New Zealand and the world champions in the space of a year.   Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber has made a few changes to his team for Saturday's Test against France in Marseille. Stormers flyhalf Manie Libbok is chosen on the bench and will make his Test debut is he gets a run. Libbok's inclusion is likely to cover for the team's shaky goalkicking that was exposed in last weekend's 19-16 defeat to Ireland in Dublin.   In all, Nienaber has made five changes and two positional switches from the side that ran out against Ireland.   Willie le Roux comes back into the starting XV at fullback, with Cheslin Kolbe moving to right wing and Kurt-Lee Arendse to left wing as Makazole Mapimpi drops to the bench.   The other change in the backline sees Faf de Klerk replace Jaden Hendrikse at scrumhalf, forming a halfback combination with Damian Willemse.   The Bok mentor also made changes to his forward pack, with tighthead prop Frans Malherbe packing down in a new-look front row alongside Bongi Mbonambi (hooker) and Ox Nche (loosehead prop). Franco Mostert also starts at lock in place of the injured Lood de Jager.   Other changes on the bench include Cobus Reinach as scrumhalf cover, with Hendrikse dropping out of the match-day squad.   Steven Kitshoff (prop), Malcolm Marx (hooker) and Marvin Orie (lock) also feature on the bench as the Boks this week opted for a five-three forwards-backs split on the bench

Understanding The Springbok Selection Now Until World Cup - Rugby Analysis

Host Carl Lewis is joined by Rapport editor Tinus van Staden and SA Rugby journalist Dylan Jack. They discuss the Springbok selection for Australia this week and what their selection criteria will look like for the rest of the Rugby Championship until the World Cup in France in 2023. Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber on Monday named a 34-man squad for the Australian leg of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, with the uncapped Canan Moodie earning a call-up for his first tour in a settled national squad. Nienaber said the touring squad, which features a good mix of youth and experience, was in line with the standard travelling squad for the Rugby World Cup and he believed that they were the right group of players to achieve what they set out to do in the two Tests against Australia in Adelaide (Saturday, 27 August) and Sydney (Saturday, 3 September). Nienaber said he would make changes to the squad for the two Tests against Argentina in Buenos Aires and Durban as he looks to give his expanded group of players a chance to prove themselves with an eye on the Rugby World Cup which will be hosted in France next year. “We have been working with a large group of players for the last few months and we believe this will pay off in the long run as we look to expand our depth for the Rugby World Cup and beyond,” said Nienaber. “Since we are going on tour, however, we will take a group of players that is more in line with the size of a Rugby World Cup squad, and our thought process is that we will have two groups of players – one who will participate in the Australian leg of the competition and another for the Argentina matches. “This way we can manage the players as well as possible on tour, while at the same time ensuring we continue to develop our depth and give the players opportunities to prove themselves with a little over a year to go before the Rugby World Cup kicks off.” Moodie, who was called up to the squad as utility back cover following the suspension handed to wing Kurt-Lee Arendse for a dangerous tackle, is the only uncapped player in the group and will travel with the Springboks for the first time, providing cover at wing and fullback. His presence also fills the void left by Cheslin Kolbe, who is on the road to recovery from a broken jaw, which will see him only return for the last Test against Argentina. With Bongi Mbonambi (hooker) ruled out for four weeks after suffering a knee injury at training last week, Deon Fourie will serve as back-up to Malcolm Marx and Joseph Dweba, while Damian Willemse's versatility in the backline will see provide cover at flyhalf, centre and fullback. “Bongi has been ruled out for four weeks, but Deon, who is an experienced hooker and flank, has been practicing his lineout throws with us, so we are confident that he will be able to fill that void for us in these matches,” said Nienaber. “We are also excited to see how Canan slots in during the next few weeks and to see how he adapts to our structures and systems, and we believe he has the skills to slot in for Kurt-Lee and Cheslin. We are nearing the end of the season and it's hotting up between two great teams: Toulouse (our favourite) and La Rochelle. Listen as you'll hear how both teams made it to the final and how they are also in excellent positions in the French Top 14 league. Listen out for typical English expressions we use when talking about sport. Give yourself a pat on the back when you hear them !! How do you account for the zero?  How do you explain the zero ? To weigh up the opponents. Toulouse often starts slowly because they weigh up the opponents, they try to suss them out, they try to figure them out. To be over the hill.     Is Max Médard too old? Cheslin Kolbe is a game changer, he has a huge impact on the game. However, he did look a bit winded at times, he looked out of breath following a hard tackle. Who would you put money on ? Who do you think will win? On paper Toulouse look stronger, in theory they look the better team. Toulouse have their eye firmly on the European Cup, it is their main objective. In the final no team will run away with it, it will be a very close match. Learning tip: practice your number skills by making a note of all the scores Chris mentions, it's pretty fast, just like the game ! So who do you think will win ? Toulouse or La Rochelle. In the comments below let us know and why, we would love to know your opinion.

The enduring image of Corne Krige is one of a bloodied and bruised, but never cowed, player. He played every game as if it were his last – sometimes, by his own admission, stepping over the line whether in Western Province, Stormers or Springbok colours. Since retirement he has carved out a successful business career and stays fit on his mountain bike. Corne also keeps a close eye on rugby from the outside and is still passionate about WP and the Springboks. Wayde van Niekerk is unquestionably South Africa's most accomplished athlete of all time. He is the only runner in history to break 10 seconds for the 100m, 20 seconds for the 200m and 44 seconds for the 400m. He comes from great stock as his mother Odessa was a world-class sprinter and Springbok World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe is his cousin. The pair famously won medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2020, Wayde was hoping to defend the 400m title he so famously won in world record time four years ago but that will have to wait for at least another year. The 2020 Olympic Games postponement due to the Coronavirus pandemic has moved the Tokyo Games to 2021. After nearly two frustrating years on the sidelines due to injury, Van Niekerk was demonstrating a good return to form earlier this year. So, while he was confined to training without competition, Wayde took time out to join the Maverick Sports podcast this week.

In Part 2 of our beautifully insightful conversation with Rassie Erasmus's lieutenant, performance analyst Lindsay Weyer, our last special guest for 2019 breaks down how the Springboks dismantled England. They had plenty of help, of course, coming in the form of consultant Felix Jones, who joined the Springbok management team after Swys de Bruin pulled out on the eve of the tournament. Many questioned Jones' appointment but Erasmus knew what they were getting from his mate from Munster and Weyer gets into detail about how Jones gave them the blueprint on all the England players, which influenced the power scrum that South Africa had as well as the key moments, such as the Cheslin Kolbe try and Damian de Allende's running lines. He describes how they identified that the two England play-makers, George Ford and Owena Farrell, were actually poor defenders. The coaching staff commanded their ball-carriers to have a go at them. The result was spectacular. Weyer also goes into detail about his history in the game, which is a great "origin" story of one of the most influential hidden figures of the Rugby World Cup-winning team.

For this episode we were joined in studio by accomplished multiple award-winning sports journalist Junia Stainbank, who spoke to SportsLIVE podcast host Sbu Mjikeliso on what it takes to become a top sports journalist. Stainbank won a hat-trick of SAB Sports Media Awards television sports journalist-of-the-year awards in his career plus a multitude of other accolade, which saw him grab the honor of covering the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. For those who have been intrigued by the art of sports journalism, this is a conversation not to be missed. Sbu Mjikeliso chimed in on his experiences, including the highlight of having authored the first biography of an African black Springbok, Being A Blacks Springbok: The Thando Manana Story. We also spoke briefly to Springbok legend Breyton Paulse about the impact Springbok winger Cheslin Kolbe has had on South African rugby as well as the team's performances at the Rugby World Cup that is currently on the go. Sbu also gives his views on the Makazole Mapimpi online controversy and the so-called "racist" video following South Africa's win over Italy and the "Bomb Squad" issue. If you've not done so already, please listen to our special episode on the Etzebeth saga that featured the leader of the Khoisan Defiance Campaign, Sammy Claassen, as well as Peter de Villiers' representative Pablo Urayayi.

SportsLIVE podcast host Sbu Mjikeliso spent a week in Japan where he witnessed the Springboks lose to the All Blacks in a game that the South Africans controlled and bossed for large chunks. But they were hit by two All Black counter-punches from which they could never recover, although they made a valiant effort through Cheslin Kolbe's second half performance. What was it like to witness Japan hostile first Rugby World Cup – the first one ever held in Asia – and the magic of the Yokohama Stadium that held the clash between the Boks and All Blacks, as well as Ireland and Scotland. Sbu bumped into plenty Irish fans who wondered exactly why it's so important to have a black African Springbok captain for the World Cup. And to really do so, SportsLIVE had to step back in time to a conversation at Grey College (Bloemfontein) between SA Schools coaches Mziwakhe Nkosi and Phiwe Nomlomo, as well as former Bulls lock and now SuperSport commentator Fudge Mabeta. The conversation chronicles the stories of the rise of two most promising young coaches in the system and how SA Rugby helped place them where they can have the most impact – at schoolboy level. Anyone listening to part one of this episode might watch the World Cup with different eyes.
