Gilly Norton founded SWV to support wounded veterans, first responders, and war correspondents. What started with therapeutic ski trips to Klosters, CH, evolved quickly into employment support, pain clinics, and mentoring when veterans revealed their biggest challenge: finding work despite their injuries. Recognizing that conventional PTSD treatments were failing, Gilly raised $1.5 million to fund the UK's first MDMA-assisted therapy trial for veterans. Despite regulatory hurdles, the initiative gained backing from General Nick Carter and national media attention. Gilly is now lobbying to make research more accessible and affordable. Apart from the Ski Program in Switzerland, SWV also runs annual ski programs, the Rivers Employment Initiative, and a global political risk conference. Gilly's key message: the human cost of war doesn't end when the conflict does—PTSD affects people of all ages, with an average patient age of just 36. Host Jeremy C. Park interviews Janet Rives, Chief Operating Officer for CreatiVets, who highlights the Nashville, Tennessee based nonprofit organization's mission and efforts to use art and music therapy to help veterans heal from trauma and prevent suicide. Janet explains the organization's origins, which began 12 years ago when founder Richard Casper returned from Iraq with a traumatic brain injury and found healing through art and songwriting. She described how CreatiVets now serves veterans nationally using art and music for healing, with programs including songwriting workshops in Nashville with award-winning songwriters, astrophotography, visual arts, and screenwriting initiatives. The programs are offered free of charge through donations and provide veterans with mentorship from other veterans who have gone through similar experiences. She describes upcoming plans for a 3-week accredited art program at Belmont University and mentions their existing longtime partnership with the Chicago School of Arts, concluding with information about their "Scars to Scripts" program scheduled for the Monday before Veterans Day. Janet discusses how their efforts are focused on preventing veteran suicide through these art therapy programs. She shares stories of two veterans who recently told her they had planned suicide but were saved through the organization's programs. The organization also offers community programs on the weekend for local veterans, including stained glass windows, sewing, and painting. The organization is currently renovating a 19,000-square-foot former church building to create a 24/7 veteran art and music center. The facility will include an auditorium for music venues, art rooms, a pottery studio, and a woodworking shop, designed to provide veterans with a safe space for healing outside of traditional business hours. The public can support CreatiVets through donations, monthly giving, volunteering, and streaming their music catalog on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Janet emphasizes that all donations support veterans through art and music programs aimed at preventing suicide, and highlights how the organization's music serves as a powerful tool for both veterans and the public to understand and seek help. All Haverhill veterans attending a free event next month will walk away with electronic gear and, possibly, a grand prize of a flat screen television, sound bar, laptop computer or other top gift.Veterans now have until Friday, July 14, to register for what's being called a “Give Back” day sponsored by the Haverhill Veteran Services Office and iPods for Wounded Veterans. Despite the name, Veteran Services Director Jeffrey C. Hollett, who appeared on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” show, says the program is for all veterans.“The number one frequently asked question is, ‘I'm not a wounded veteran or I'm not a disabled veteran. So, this doesn't apply to me?' That's not true. To really understand this, you have to understand the background of iPods for Veterans as an organization,” he says.Hollett went on to explain the start of iPods for Veterans.“In 2011, two veterans by the names of Paul Cardello and John Parker got together and said ‘Hey. Let's take a trip down to Washington D.C. and go to Walter Reed. We have 32 IPods and we want to give them to veterans at Walter Reed.' When they did that, they realized, real quickly ‘Hey, we don't have enough iPods.' The veterans were approaching them as they were leaving the medical center and they wanted these iPods. So, they came back to Boston, they raised some more money and they went back down to Walter Reed and made sure they had enough iPods for every veteran that was in the hospital,” he explains. That was 12 years ago, and things have changed.“But, today they give out more than just iPods. They give out mp3 players, tablets, headphones; they provide letters, magazines, hats. They are doing all kinds of great things, but when they created their organization they created it under this name called iPods for Wounded Veterans, which is a chartered organization. So, it often leads to that question ‘Is that what they do” They're just giving away IPods?' No, they're giving away a lot more,” Hollett adds. There are three tiers of raffles planned for the event, with all veterans guaranteed to win one. Hollett is using the opportunity to talk with Haverhill veterans he hasn't previously met and explain benefits for which they may be eligible.Registration deadline has been extended to July 14 for veterans and an optional guest for the “Give Back” Saturday, Aug. 5, with check in taking place between 11:15 and 11:45 a.m., at AmVets Post 147, 576 Primrose St., Haverhill.Support the show
It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show. Brian welcomes in Aaron Hale, a motivational speaker, extreme athlete, business entrepreneur, and a Blind Veteran. We kick the interview off with Aaron telling us how he was blinded in combat as Aaron was in the army and an explosives expert. We find out what it feels like to approach an explosive device, and Aaron shares with us the incident that blinded him. Aaron then walks us through his recovery process at Walter Reed, and how helpful his introduction to the Bard Talking Book Reader was. While rehabbing and instructing Aaron was introduced to Homes for Heroes. Not one to sit around, as soon as Aaron got going on the iPhone, he began researching outdoor activities for the blind. He came across several blind people who have accomplished amazing tasks, and wanted to know how he could get involved with exploring the outdoors as someone who is blind. Which led to him climbing the Andes Mountains with a group of Wounded Veterans. Aaron and Brian reminisce a little about some of their favorite shows growing up. Aaron then tells us about when and how he lost his hearing, and what learning he would be deaf blind was like. Amazingly, Aaron all handled it phenomenally well thanks to his sense of humor. Aaron then shares with us what takes place during the Cochlear implant process. Next Aaron tells us a little about his time in the Navy as a cook, and how he eventually started a very successful fudge business called Extra Ordinary Delights. Read about Aaron's appearance on The Rachel Ray Show. Aaron then tells us about his continuing involvement with Homes for Heroes, and the upcoming event he is currently training for the Badwater 135 where he will be raising money for Homes For Heroes. If you would like to support Aaron or Homes For Heroes please make a donation here. We then discuss what the experience with Veteran Affairs has been like. The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes provides support for Veterans severely wounded during the Global War on Terror. Two representatives join us for this broadcast. Donny Daughenbaugh is the Senior VP for Development and Administration. He was shot in the face when his Marine Squad was engaged south of Baghdad. The bullet lodged at the base of his skull near his spine so doctors chose to leave it in place. Donny suffers tremendous pain to this day. Mary Jessie Herrera is their Western Field Representative. She joined the Arizona National Guard with plans to make a career out of the Army. Mary was the lead gunner in a convoy ambushed while traveling from Fallujah to Ramadi. She took two AK-47 rounds to her right arm. Thankfully doctors were able to save the appendage but she still has limited use of her right hand. The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes administers a variety of programs designed to support wounded Veterans. Wounded Veterans can face financial strains during their hospital stay and recoveries. The Coalition's Emergency Financial Aid program provides assistance with everything from mortgage & rent payments to groceries and utility assistance. When the Coalition heard about spouses having to leave their jobs to be with their Veteran during recovery, the organization created the "Heroes Thanking Heroes" initiative. This allows spouses to earn money with flexible hours from home making calls to thank program donors. Since inception over 3.5 million calls have been completed. The Coalition also has programs designed to support children & caregivers we well as all expense paid conferences that allow the Veterans to find hope & healing among those comrades also making the transition. Online education and training courses are also made available. TAKEAWAY: " When someone is killed they are fulfilling the commitment they made by writing a blank check to the American people up to and including their lives. When someone is wounded, they are still paying off that check, just more slowly."

20 veterans die by suicide every day. These soldiers defend our country with courage and valor and the way back home isn't easy, especially for those suffering from PTSD. Recently, more families filed lawsuits against doctors for mistreating veterans suffering from PTSD. In this episode of Run It By My Lawyer, Joe Samo details two lawsuits filed against medical providers for not being able to prevent a soldier's suicide. There's a lot to unfold when a family seeks damages against doctors when their loved one dies from self-inflicted injuries. One soldier served two tours in Iraq, seeing fellow soldiers die in front of him and witnessing innocent children dying. Carrying that type of emotional pain with him was difficult. Learn about this story and much more in this episode. #Veterans #WoundedWarriors #PTSD Website: https://linktr.ee/slamo Email: joe@SamoLaw.com Instagram: @runitbymylawyer Support the Podcast: Venmo: @Joe-Samo-1

There's solace in being on the water. met. Sailahead is a Veteran Service Organization that's changing lives. For this episode Fran Racioppi traveled to Centerport Yacht Club for Sailahead's annual event of over 150 people, almost 40 boats and Veterans spanning every conflict from WWII to today. Fran sat down with Kilian, Sean and Jenny Duclay who started Sailahead to bring Veterans the healing power of the water, bring awareness to PTS and Veteran Suicide, and to honor our mates. He also shared a moment with the The Day Family, who's son Ryan served as an Army Ranger, deployed multiple times to Afghanistan, and died by suicide as he struggled with the emotional toll endless conflict takes on us. Finally, Fran talked the oath we have to each other with a group of Army Rangers who never sailed before joining Sailahead. It's time to stop Veteran suicide. It's time to accept and acknowledge that it's ok to not be ok. Learn more about Sailahead at sailahead.org and on social media @sailahead. Read the full episode transcription here and learn more on The Jedburgh Podcast Website. Check out our video versions on YouTube.Highlights: -Sailahead was started by 16 year-old Kilian and 14 year-old Sean after taking a Vietnam veteran sailing in the winter. (5:30)-Sailahead operates under three pillars: using the ocean as a healing power, raising awareness for Veterans' Mental Health, and to honoring Our Mates. (8:30)-Sailing provides Veterans an outlet to build and work on a team, learn new skills, and regain some of the competitive atmosphere lost when they leave service. (29:30) -Fran and Jim, Linda & Justin Day share their memories of Ryan, his legacy and why Veterans struggle with being able to turn off. (31:23)-Jim shares the importance of the phrase “we live with it” and how we must accept what has happened to be able to move forward. (40:26)-Linda explains how the concept of “it's ok to not be ok” allows for respect and perspective in finding and accepting help. (42:25)-Fran sits down with Ron, James and Mike; three former Army Rangers, to discuss the importance of community both in the military and post-service. (50:46)Quotes: -”For 20 years he'd been going to therapy to treat his PTSD and that was the best therapy that he'd ever had.” (7:06)-”If 22 lives are lost a day, there's not just 22 people who are suffering.” (10:36)-”An immediate goal is spreading that awareness and making sure people understand that they are not alone.” (25:35) -”We don't just want to take someone for a boat ride. We want them to gain a new perspective on life.” (28:15) -”To see this happen because of some part of his being, not being satisfied, and not be able to turn off the energy that was put into him by the military is a travesty,” (34:00)-”This never ends…as time goes on what you have to do is learn to live with it. There Is no other choice.” (40:35)-”It's easy to fall into the pit of emotion that comes with loss. It's what you do with it after it happens.” (41:30)-”It's ok not to be ok…but it's not ok to keep it to yourself.” (1:05:32) This episode is brought to you by Jersey Mike's, 18A Fitness, and Analytix Solutions

WHAT WILL THE AUDIENCE LEARN?How can you get involved with our mission? Special Guests: Sean Duclay & Kilian DuclayEPISODE SUMMARY:Use sailing and the ocean as a therapeutic platform to foster healing in our military community. It can be easy to believe that the only ones impacted by war are those who travel overseas to fight it. In reality, the impact of war touches the lives of everyone around the soldier or veteran as well. This community includes active duty soldiers, retired veterans, and family members or friends of our fellow citizens in green. Through our events, we aim to connect the sailing and military communities, in order to employ the curative powers of sailing and curb the veteran suicide epidemic. Spread post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and veteran suicide awareness. The first step to solving any problem is to raise awareness of the cause. We do this through our sailing programs and annual events across the country.Honor and remember Our Mates. We are on the front lines of a war for veterans' mental health at home. Our Mates ensure that the memories of those who lost this battle live on. Carrying Our Mates with us also functions as a physical symbol of just how urgent this crisis is. This episode is about different kinds of silences. Many traumatized veterans don't know how to talk about their experiences, especially with people who haven't been at war. My guest, Seattle novelist Shawn Wong, helps veterans turn their experiences into stories. When it's your story, you get to control what it means. For example, he tells the story of a soldier who was too wounded to be at his dying father's bedside. That fact had held the soldier captive; but in writing about it, facts become healing truths. Meanwhile, Wong struggles to understand the silences in his own life, including the early death of both his parents and his wife. We want to hear your Subtext stories and episode pitches! In this episode(25) of Winning Strategies Playbook, our host and real estate expert Jeremy Spann interviews 4 United States Marines involved with the non-profit organization Cowtown Warriors. This episode is near and dear to Jeremy's heart, as he is the founder of Cowtown Warriors. This organization helps wounded veterans coming back from combat and helping their lives in a positive way. Cowtown Warriors is extremely unique where in their 7 years, 100% of ALL donated dollars have gone straight to help veterans. This isn't a joke, every single dollar donated directly helps these vets who are in need of assistance after protecting our freedoms in the great USA! (Caution, this episode contains strong language) Here is the link to Cowtown Warriors' website if you are interested in connecting with him! https://www.cowtownwarriors.com If you are a new listener to Winning Strategies Playbook, we would love to hear from you. The history and stories of the foundation serving our Combat Wounded Veterans & Gold Star families through hunting and fishing events.
Sometimes wounds of war affect veterans in ways that make having children difficult. Recent legislation has proposed the government help these veterans with fertilization services. On the Wednesday edition of Idaho Matters, we discuss these efforts and ask why they haven't been previously addressed.
Veterans Affairs Canada is boasting about the great support the Trudeau government is providing Canada's military veterans, particularly those who are wounded and injured. However, the veterans involved with the Equitas lawsuit - which sought to restore and protect disability pensions and benefits for veterans but was struck down late last year – would likely disagree with this assessment. After all, when asked about the Equitas lawsuit during one of his town halls earlier this year, the prime minister said, "Why are we still fighting certain veterans groups in court? Because they're asking for more than we are able to give right now."
