Prerna Gupta is a serial entrepreneur and investor. After being at the helm of many successful startups, Prerna is now the CEO and Founder of Hooked, a company that is redefining fiction for the Snapchat generation. Hooked has over 100 million viewers across social media, a short form video streaming app called Hooked TV, and has received funding from Ashton Kutcher, Mariah Carey, LeBron James, and Jamie Foxx to name a few. As the child of Indian immigrants growing up in a conservative town in Oklahoma, Prerna spent much of her life pretending to be someone she was not. Through soul-searching and digging deep within herself, she grew to understand that her differences made her special and that if she stayed true to herself, she would always be happy. Prerna has carried this lesson with her throughout her life: the courage to be herself has made her a risk-taking, brave entrepreneur, even when others have doubted her. We chat with Prerna about her start-up lessons and failures, the importance of failing and iterating in business, the downfalls of being solely goal-driven, and why you should constantly seek fulfillment in life versus deferring your happiness to some time in the future. Prerna also shares more about her and her husband’s decision to buy a one way ticket to Costa Rica, thoughts on staying balanced, and why love will always be more important than wealth. In this episode, we'll talk to Prerna about: * The impact that growing up in a small town in Oklahoma had on Prerna. [2:52]* Prerna’s career after college, before she decided to strike out on her own. [6:35]* Prerna’s feelings about going down a different path to most of her friends who were in the corporate world. [10:30]* Details about Prerna’s first startup, Yaari, the pivot it made, and why it closed. [12:39]* Moving onto a music creation app, Songify, after Yaari closed and the inspiration behind it. [15:45]* The double-edged sword of achieving your goals and creating success that you never dreamed of. [19:29]* Getting acquired by Smule and the big decision to sell everything & move to Costa Rica. [21:35]* How Prerna applied The Lean Startup methodology to a book concept she was working on [27:19]* When Prerna reached her ‘aha moment’ on the journey to creating HOOKED. [30:54]* Prerna shares 3 lessons on what makes certain businesses go viral. [34:00]* How Prerna thinks about balance in her life and what makes her feel most balanced. Inspired by a standup comedy premise that kale tastes so bad that hungry/homeless people wouldn't take it, the idea is a charity that gives raw kale (and only kale) to the homeless. It'd supply nutrients that the homeless don't get from handouts on the street (snacks, fast food, food from street vendors), assuming that we can convince the homeless to actually eat it. Also: questioning whether it would be charity or torture; the homeless could pad their coats with the kale or burn it for warmth; homeless people struggling to eat kale without gagging might inspire sympathy from passers-by who might therefore give more donations; could we teach the homeless in the US to grow their own food in community gardens like the homeless do in Vietnam Joel Fragomeni (Podcast: https://joelradio.net) Sai-D (twitter.com/saidee27) Matti Yaari (facebook.com/myaari) Tom Walma (twitter.com/thomaswalma)

For our first ever re-released episode we decided to commemorate Indigenous People’s Day with an audience favorite and one of our earliest shows. Yaari Walker is a member of the Yupik tribe, and originally from the town of Savoonga, on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. She now resides in Anchorage, Alaska, where, in addition to being an activist, author, and entrepreneur, she works at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Yaari has been on a journey, as a survivor of physical abuse, substance abuse, and incarceration, to recovery, writing a book, starting a business in Native medicinals, activism, and going back to college to study Psychology. We cover a lot of issues facing indigenous communities in Alaska, North America, and around the world, as well as the issue of community itself and how industrialized Western society often seems to be at odds with the values of sharing, communal responsibility, and compassion. A warning that we talk about addiction and substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, and the legacy of boarding school placement amongst the indigenous communities of North America. For those who have personally been through these traumas, or who have loved ones who have, just a note that some parts of this show may be upsetting.

Jonathan Yaari is a co-founder of Soundudes. This new app for musicians is currently in beta, and will be publicly launched in late June. The promise of Soundudes is pretty straightforward: “We’ll find your Soundcloud super-fans and connect them with your music.” How does it work though? If in short, the services finds relevant to you Soundcloud accounts using a sophisticated algorithm, and follows them on your behalf. While the concept may not sound new, the Soundudes’ approach to the task surely does. In this WeSpin Recipes podcast episode, Jonathan talks on the Soundudes’ mission to help artists, and the app’s algorithm and features. In the interview you are also going to learn what other platforms Soundudes is going to support soon, how to sign up for the beta, and how to avoid the non-personal and harmful automation in your marketing efforts. Some of the topics covered in the episode: • Being confident to enter the “risky” music tech space. • Artists’ challenges Soundudes is trying to solve. • How the Soundudes algorithm works. • Are the latest Soundcloud changes good for indie artists? • Soundudes: the onboarding process and the key features. • The transparency and privacy concerns. • What about other types of Soundcloud activity automation?
