Malkie Schwartz - From Fundy to Freedom FighterDivorced: Ultra-orthodox JudaismIn her early 20s, Malkie Schwartz chose to leave her ultra-orthodox Jewish community. Within 3 years, she founded Footsteps, the first organization in North America to help people who wish to leave the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and live in mainstream society. Footsteps gained notoriety in 2017, with the release of the Netflix documentary “One of Us.” To date, Footsteps has served over 1300 individuals. Malkie is also co-founder and board member of the Rights and Religions Forum. In 2023, the Rights and Religions Forum (RARF) launched the Borgenicht Fellowship Program for Community Leaders. This first-of-its-kind program connects a diverse cohort of leaders who are challenging religious oppression and supporting the ability of individuals raised in insular religious groups to make personal choices and lead lives that reflect their personal values and beliefs. I met Malkie when a Footsteps representative reached out to me in 2021 interested in sending a Footsteps contingent to the inaugural Conference on Religious Trauma (CORT), and today I am proud to be a Borgenicht Fellow. In this episode, Malkie shares about leaving her insular community, why she started Footsteps, and the importance of groups like RARF, who rely on generous donations to provide support for others who are Divorcing Religion.RESOURCES MENTIONED:https://rarforum.org/https://www.footstepsorg.org/Janice's Best-selling book Divorcing Religion: A Memoir and Survival Handbook is now available inUSA https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DP78TZZF and CANADA https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0DP78TZZFEarly Bird tickets are now available for the Shameless Sexuality: Life After Purity Culture conference, happening LIVE in Seattle May 23-25, 2025! Study Guide Bava Kamma 118 Today’s daf is sponsored by the Hadran Women of Long Island in gratitude to Hedy and Mendy Klein and their daughter, our friend and co-learner, Malkie Klein for sponsoring the Long Island in-person Siyum on Wednesday evening. "The Siyum allows us to come together, share our thoughts and experiences, and celebrate another milestone in our monumental journey. Malkie has graciously opened her home to us on many occasions. Her parents have cheered us on. May they continue to reap nachat from their wonderful family and from us!" Does one need to return stolen or borrowed items to the owner in a city or can he/she return them in an uninhabited place (unguarded, less safe)? Claims where the borrower/robber/watchman is unsure of their claim - "I stole but don't remember if I paid it back" or "I am unsure if I stole," what is the law? If the owner says that one stole/borrowed/watched an item but did not pay it back and the claimant says "I don't remember," the amoraim debate whether or not one needs to return the money. How does this fit with the case in the Mishna? If one steals, can one return the item without the owner knowing? If he/she returned the item without the owner knowing, and the animal dies or is stolen again, is the thief responsible? Does it depend on whether or not the owner knew it was stolen in the first place? There are four different possibilities offered. There are certain people that one cannot buy certain items from because there is a strong reason to believe they are stolen. It may also depend on the quantity they are selling.

Get INTUIT with Gila- a podcast about Intuitive Eating and Personal Growth.
In today's episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I had the honor and privelahe of intervewiing Malkie Hirsch of KissTheKoshercook. I actually got to meet Malkie last year when we were interviewed on the same day by Naomi Nachman. Many times, when you meet someone in person who you kind of "know" from Instagram, you are surprised that they aren't as nice as they seem. Honestly, I loved Malkie when I met her. She is so sweet, kind and easy to talk to. Malkie is a talented cook who shares a lot of whats goes on in her day to day life on her platform. Just about 1.5 years ago, Malkie's life completely changed when her husband Moshe, suddenly died. This is a challenge that no one should ever know, but as Malkie and I discussed in this episode, she has chosen to take this horrible pain and make meaning with it (as I said in the interview, check out the book By David Kessler and Elisabeth Kubler Ross https://grief.com/books-by-david-kessler/on-grief-and-grieving-elisabeth-kubler-rosss-david-kessler/). Malkie has been given a hardship that she never would have asked for, but is using this deep pain to help others. I personally suffered my own sudden loss, 2 years ago when my mother died very suddenly. Everyday, since that day, I have felt swallowed in a cloud of grief, pain, hopelessness, despair and confusion. When I started reading Malkie's articles, I had some semblance of hope, an anchor, and space and place to carry my pain with me. Malkie has an incredible way with her written words and she is a huge source of inspiration and hope for me and for so many others. A bit more about Malkie: Malkie Hirsch is a native of the Five Towns, hailing from Lawrence and moved to Woodmere after marrying her husband Moshe and is currently raising her kids (Dovid, Nison, Yosef, Gavriel and Rosie) on Barnard ave. She started working in marketing, running the hair and makeup division at an artists agency, and currently works as a real estate broker in addition to being a food blogger at the popular Instagram page “kiss the kosher cook”. She has a Facebook page of the same name and a food sharing WhatsApp page called “kiss the kosher queens.” Last year, after the sudden and tragic death of her 40 year old husband, she took to writing about her journey as a single mother to 5 kids (ages 11-1 1/2) on her page as well as The Five Towns Jewish Times publication on a weekly basis, where it's been a very therapeutic process and has also inspired many that have reached out to share their varied stories. Claire Malkie hosts the "Sit Still, Look Opinionated" podcast where she entertains and educates recent generations on politics.
Have you ever just picked up and moved to a big, metropolitan city you have never visited on a whim? How about deciding one day that you need to thrust your fellow generation into informed political discourse? I’m pretty sure you haven’t done either of those things. You are about to meet someone who has. Claire Malkie grew up in Virginia and studied classical acting at Hofstra University. After graduating, someone suggested moving to Chicago and, without skipping a beat, she jumped at the opportunity. Arriving in Chicago ready to tackle the stage, she soon realized that the opportunities were pretty limited, but there were tons of opportunities to do improv. So, she headed back to improv school and started learning and performing at Comedy Court and has worked at a number of festivals. Overhearing a conversation from a peer that included “I don’t really understand politics, so I don’t want to get involved”, Claire realized that she could help change that attitude, which was important to her because she realized that she had the same attitude. To remedy that disinterest, Claire now co-writes and hosts the podcast “Sit Still, Look Opinionated” (https://sit-still-look-opinionated.simplecast.com) which is not just informative and non-biased, but it is also downright funny as she and her co-writer come up with fantastic jokes about the headlines that deserve to be on late-night talk shows. I highly recommend checking it out, whether you are in the know, or are trying to be, or don’t care… because you should. In today’s episode, we continue our powerful conversation with Malkie Gordon Hirsch about her journey walking through the grief of losing her husband and how she has regained a sense of hope as she raises a family and navigates rediscovering her purpose after loss. If you have not done so yet, we highly recommend that you check out the first part of our conversation to hear the full story and Malkie’s powerful insight as she reflects back on the first year of losing her husband. The response we have gotten so far in this episode has been unbelievable. We know it will touch your heart the way it has impacted so many other lives. In the last half of our conversation, we dig into the process of grief and why Malkie believes that it does not have “an order” to it. She also talks more about why gratitude has been so important to her as a parent and how she deals with the question of “why me?” We also discuss faith’s role in the process of grief and why she believes there are “great blessings” that can emerge from tragedy. We know Malkie’s outlook will move you and help you process whatever you may be going through. One day, Malkie Gordon Hirsch received a phone call that would forever change her life. She was told that her husband had collapsed at work and had passed away. She was then left to not only navigate through her own grief but also try to help her five children process through the loss of their father. This is part one of our two-part conversation where Malkie generously walks us through the first year of life after losing a spouse. She openly shares with us the importance of feeling pain, not numbing yourself to it’s grip, and the process of healing. We discuss the difference between empathizing with someone and having “pity” over them and how important it is to show up in the RIGHT way for someone who is hurting. We also talk about how to be sensitive to your children’s needs and gently teaching them how to handle pain in their own way. There is a lot of emotion in this episode and it may not be appropriate for those who are not ready to process everything that was said. Make sure you are in a place to really absorb not only this story but the wisdom that Malkie shares with us today. I know her story will impact your life. Today's daf is sponsored in memory of Helen Glucksman, Chana Rachel bat Moshe Aharon Halevi z"l, beloved grandmother of our teacher, Lisa Septimus, from Malkie, Marcy, Rochelle, Sami and Gitta. When a non-Jew performs an act that a Jew is forbidden to do on Shabbat, can a Jew benefit from what the non-Jew did? On what does it depend? Is it only for a candle or items like that as one candle can be used for many people? Does it depend on whether the non-Jew knows the Jew? Can one carry an item that is generally used for forbidden purposes for its own sake (if one needs it for a permitted purpose)? If a door breaks on Shabbat or before Shabbat, can it be carried? Can one put it back in its place? Is there a difference between a door that is serving something that is attached to the ground or a door of a utensil? Why? Does the melacha of building include building utensils or not?

But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE As an innocent Jewish youth in Vancouver, Canada, and later as a rabbinical student and aspiring scribe in Israel, Kalman Samuels could never have imagined the life-changing events that awaited him. When he and wife Malkie welcomed their second child, Yossi, to the world forty-one years ago, they looked forward to a bright and normal future; but after a tainted batch of vaccine rendered Yossi totally blind and deaf, they entered an unprecedented chapter as a family. As an eight year old boy in a school for deaf children, Yossi encountered a dedicated teacher who helped him - for the first time - learn to "read" symbols in his palm, opening him to the world of communication. Soon afterwards he learned to communicate synthetically, and at that moment Kalman's wife Malkie committed to dedicate their lives to alleviating the isolation and anguish that other special needs families experienced. The couple first launched a modest after-school program, which grew into an impressive Jerusalem center with a variety of programs for special children and their families. After years laboring in this field, they catapulted their venture - Shalva, which literally means "serenity" - to an entirely new sphere, constructing a 220,000 square-foot, $63 million world-class structure dedicated to servicing every conceivable need of the special needs population, as well as to bringing the notions of inclusion - and reverse inclusion - to levels unforseen prior. Today Shalva is a global leader, a destination for children and families from all over the country, and a resounding testament to the fortitude of one special young man, and his remarkably driven parents. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world.
