Last year, I did a video on How to Donate Effectively, where we explored the idea that one of the ultimate status symbols is creating your own charitable foundation—and how to make a real impact with your giving. In my latest video I interview John Bromley, the Founder and CEO of Charitable Impact, the platform we personally use to make giving easier and more effective. John has dedicated his career to helping Canadians maximize their impact through strategic giving. His company has proudly facilitated over $1.5 billion in donations, empowering tens of thousands of people to tap into their generosity, pursue their vision for change, and develop meaningful giving habits. Beyond his work in philanthropy, John is a two-time TEDx speaker, a recipient of Business in Vancouver's 40 Under 40 award, a soccer coach, and a doting father of two. In this podcast episode you'll discover: Why Charitable Impact was created. How Charitable Impact works for donors. Why open a personal charitable foundation? Donor-advised funds vs. private foundations. Should you involve your family in charitable giving? What happens to your foundation after you pass away? Does Charitable Impact help you find the right charity? Why donate? What is a proactive donor? Should you have a donation plan? Can others contribute to your foundation? The future of charitable giving. Biggest challenges & focus areas for charitable giving. What larger donors need to know. How to choose the right cause for your values.
In today's episode, Sheila talks with Anthony Scala, founder and owner of the non-for-profit organization Mr. Charity Foundation, about how the wonderous art of gift giving and charity donations can help encourage people to spread love and joy during the holiday season.

Today we're running a replay of one of my favorite conversations from 2022 with Lila Mills of Signal Cleveland. Since we last spoke, Signal Cleveland has continuously produced reliable daily journalism across a plethora of local topics and built Cleveland Documenters, a group of nearly 700 greater Cleveland residents, representing nearly every zip code in the county, who are trained and paid to cover public meetings. Additionally, launched in December 2023, Signal Akron joined Signal Cleveland as the 2nd newsroom within the Signal Ohio network of independent and community-led non-profit newsrooms — now representative of one of the largest local nonprofit news startups in the country with more than 20 staff and over $15 million raised so far.I have a deep-rooted belief in the importance of local storytelling, as a way to inspire, educate, and build community locally; it's one of the many reasons I love doing Lay of The Land, and it's why I think this conversation about Signal Cleveland resonates so broadly and why I've become such an advocate and supporter for the work they're doing — what local storytelling is to the community, local journalism is to democracy and society overall!--Lila has been working in community and media for more than 20 years. She most recently spent almost 11 years with the nationally-recognized community building program Neighborhood Connections where her work ranged from editing a community newspaper to serving as associate director. Prior to that, Mills was a student newspaper advisor at Cuyahoga Community College and a reporter at the Plain Dealer. Born and raised on the southeast side of Cleveland, Lila is a first-generation college graduate with degrees from Columbia University. From 2000 to 2020, the newspaper industry's advertising revenue fell by an estimated 80%, from 2000 to 2018, weekday newspaper circulation fell from 55.8 million households to an estimated 28.6 million, 1800 communities have lost their local newsroom since 2004, over 2000 papers have closed since 2004 and there's been a 60% reduction newsroom jobs since 2008 — needless to say, access to Local News across the country is waning.Signal Cleveland — a nonprofit initiative formed by The American Journalism Project and a coalition of Ohio-based organizations like the Cleveland Foundation, the John S. Danny Popescu is a passionate visionary in the world of wealth management. In this episode of The Business of You, Danny shares some of his guidance on finance, being a great employer and making an impact. In 2013, Danny Popescu founded Harbourfront, an independent wealth management firm. Danny launched Harbourfront with an $11 million personal investment and within 9 years, established a $425 million enterprise value when Boston-based Private Equity firm, Audax Group bought a stake in the firm. With roughly 250 employees in 25 branches across Canada, Harbourfront is one of the fastest growing independent dealers now on track to establish a $1.5 - $2 billion enterprise value by 2027. At 46, Danny was named one of Canada's Top 50 Industry Leaders of 2021 by Wealth Professionals. As CEO, Danny oversees the operations of Harbourfront Wealth Holdings' four underlying businesses including its Investment Dealer, Asset Management Firm, and US investment arm. Danny also created the Harbourfront Gives Foundation which raises money for a number of Canadian charities. The Harbourfront Gives Foundation has donated over $300,000 to 54 charities as of July 2022. Thinking outside the box Before Harbourfront, the large majority of investment advisors across Canada were limited to investing their clients' dollars the old way – exclusively in publicly traded securities, with no allocation to private investments. Danny and a group of seasoned wealth advisors strategized a solution to the investment limitations in Canada. At Harbourfront, seasoned wealth management professionals offer harmonized advice that intricately weave defensive portfolio construction, income planning and projecting, tax minimization planning, estate preservation, and trust management, all with a continuous focus on the management of risk. It's unlike anything that existed in Canada before. Using psychology to connect with employees and clients When asked about his ability to connect with clients and staff, Danny cites his secret to success - human psychology. By assessing the way people think, he can advise his clients to build a lasting and meaningful financial legacy. Danny encourages his clients to consider nontraditional methods of building wealth - also minimizing their risk and protecting their life savings. By focusing on diversifying portfolios and offering alternatives to publicly traded securities, Danny ensures that his clients build a future for themselves and their families. Quotes “I am fortunate to be a good generalist. I have decent knowledge of marketing to sales, business development, organizational skills and interpersonal skills. I think psychology is really important when you're working with people.” “I don't gamble. If I don't see how something will unfold, I don't make a move on that initiative.” “I understood the psychology of decision-making and human beings. It was helpful in learning how advisors think.” “When I am hiring people, I don't put too much focus on where they went to school. We're making an investment in them. We say hey, can this person fit in here and essentially provide a return on investment of hiring them? We put far more stock in their personalities, work ethic, ambition and communication skills.” “Your employees need to understand why they're doing what they're doing. We teach them how they fit into the overall goal, and why their roles are valuable to the organization. We also try to speak to the end goal and vision, how they are benefitting the consumer.” “The ethics that we have towards our employees, I think that translates towards clients. People feel that they work at an organization that treats them fairly, and treats them with respect.” “Money is not just made by investing in businesses in the stock market. You can invest in private businesses looking to invest capital. You have a lot more available in the pool of companies in the private space. Don't be limited to public securities.” “Most clients are not just looking to get rich overnight - they are looking to protect their life savings. A balanced approach between multiple asset clients is what they like.” Links mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Harbourfront Wealth Management by visiting their website at www.Harbourfrontwealth.com Connect with Danny Popescu on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/popescugroup/ Read about the Harbourfront Gives Foundation at https://harbourfrontgives.org/

In this episode, Shannon shares her motherhood story. She shares her traumatic entrance into motherhood and describes how she was missing a tribe of mamas that she thought would come afterwards. After Shannon had her second child, she realized that the village of mamas were not coming to find her, so she would have to create it. She wanted to change the way motherhood looked. She talks about the day that everything changed and "Mamas for Mamas'' was born. What originally started out as a small Facebook group has evolved to 62 chapters of "Mamas for Mamas" spread across Canada. Shannon's philosophy is to build longer tables rather than higher fences. She says as far as she can tell, it takes the same amount of wood and effort, however, the outcome is drastically different.Shannon Christensen (born Kimmitt) was born and raised in Kelowna, BC and lives here with her husband of 16 years and her 2 boys. With a BA in Psychology and Masters of counselling psychology specializing in forensics, she has a passion for working with marginalized populations and used this drive to start Mamas for Mamas. This grassroots project has since become a national non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the negative impact of poverty on low-income mothers and their families.Shannon has been recognized as a top 40 under 40 recipient, A Woman to Watch, and was a top 3 finalist for Woman of the Year through The City of Kelowna Civic and Community Awards. Most recently she has co-authored a best selling book about motherhood and has brought home the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada for her work with Mamas for Mamas.Shannonreally likes pickles and making the world a better place.Mamas for Mamas WebsiteFollow Mamas for Mamas on InstagramFollow Mamas for Mamas on FacebookFollow Candace on Instagram

Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, is a serial entrepreneur with an impressive track record of successful startups. He launched Binance in July 2017 and within 180 days grew Binance into the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world. An expert in blockchain and trading systems, CZ has built Binance into the leading blockchain ecosystem, comprised of Binance Exchange, Labs, Launchpad, Info, Academy, Research, Trust Wallet and Charity Foundation. Moving all around the world, living in different major cities prevented a lack of connection or reliance on anyone government-backed currency. This set the stage for a life dedicated to cryptocurrency and Bitcoin and ultimately led to the creation of Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Bitcoin has taken on only greater importance as governments issue more currency. “We're witnessing probably the largest amount of quantitative easing by governments all around the world. And when governments do that, everybody becomes poor because there are more currencies being printed, and you're not given much of that directly. Bitcoin has limited supply, 21 million of them ever [get made]… You know that's mathematically guaranteed. No one can change it.” Binance aims to use its company to further build the foundation of crypto and grow its adoption. The goal is to use cryptocurrency to deliver freedom of money in the same way we view freedom of speech. ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

Lance Picioane was a first round draft pick in the AFL - Australian Football League - with incredibly high expectations. But, playing Australian rules, where battle is done in gladiatorial like stadiums, was masking a private battle that Lance was facing. We all now know that athletes have human fragilities too. Lance takes us through his youth, football career, and some of his troubled times as his parallel mental health battles led to substance abuse and a descent into troubled waters. Lance is a character of exceptional qualities, brought out by the exceptional women in his life. With his Mum and his wife by his side, Lance was able to find a positive path into good mental health and he founded Love Me Love You, a foundation built purposefully so that people who face mental health struggles can walk the pathway with support. Whilst his football career was important, his post-football life changing people’s lives and getting them help is truly remarkable and inspirational.
