Yiwu in Zhejiang province has been dubbed "the world's supermarket" for the overwhelming array of goods available there. And this is a part of the magic of this bustling business hub in eastern China.That magic in Yiwu also means that people there dare to dream big, building business empires step by step even from the smallest and seemingly most insignificant commodities such as buttons.So it was for Nie Ziqin, a businesswoman at the Yiwu International Trade Market, who came to the city from Henan province with her father in 2003 at the age of 16, with the dream of becoming her own boss.From peddling handmade masks door to door, to renting a 4.5-square-meter stall devoted exclusively to Halloween products, and later building her own factory and buying commercial property, Nie has fulfilled that dream and become one of the leading merchants in this vast market."In Yiwu, as long as you are not afraid of hardship and hard work, you can achieve anything," she said.Located in central Zhejiang province, Yiwu is neither on the border nor on the coast. Once a county-level city hindered by poor transportation links and scarce resources, it has written a remarkable chapter in China's county-level economic development over the past four decades, since the opening of its first-generation small commodities market in 1982.Forging what has become known as the "Yiwu development experience", marked by a spirit of innovation and the ability to "create something from nothing", the city has grown into the world-renowned "capital of small commodities".Today, the Yiwu market is home to more than 1.26 million business entities and maintains trade links with more than 230 countries and regions. In 2025, its export value ranked first among all county-level regions in China."In Yiwu, there are no products you cannot buy — only products you have not thought of," Nie said.In an instruction published on Thursday, President Xi Jinping called for efforts to further review and make better use of the "Yiwu development experience".Yiwu's small commodities have broken into a vast market and developed into a major industry, forming the "Yiwu development experience", Xi said, adding that this represents a successful example for developing county economies in line with local conditions.Efforts should be made to further review and apply the experience by integrating it into the Party-wide study campaign for establishing and practicing a correct understanding of governance performance, Xi said.It is imperative to guide all regions to leverage their own resource endowments and explore high-quality development paths suited to their respective local conditions, he said.Xi's ties with Yiwu go back many years. In December 2002, shortly after taking office as Party secretary of Zhejiang province, he visited the Yiwu International Trade Market for an inspection.From 2002 to 2007, Xi made more than 10 fact-finding trips to Yiwu, pressing for reforms to remove institutional bottlenecks holding back its fast-growing private economy. He once likened Yiwu to "a fast-growing child wearing unsuitable clothes", a vivid metaphor for the constraints on the city's development needs.In November 2005, Xi called for efforts to remove institutional bottlenecks ranging from financing to registration for foreign trade enterprises and tax policies. A year later, Zhe­jiang issued guidelines on piloting local government administration reforms, delegating Yiwu a total of 131 economic and social management powers — the first county-level city in the country to enjoy such broad authorization.According to previous reports, Zhou Yongnan, then a reporter with Zhejiang Daily, later recalled that when local media and officials sought to sum up Yiwu's path as the "Yiwu model", Xi advised against the term "model", saying that it implied something fixed and unchanging, whereas reform and innovation are endless."He said it should be called the 'Yiwu experience' instead," Zhou recalled.With Xi's support and Yiwu's influence as an exemplar of reform, many regions across Zhejiang began receiving expanded administrative powers, and the "Yiwu experience" was later promoted nationwide.In September 2023, Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, revisited the Yiwu International Trade Market during an inspection tour of Jinhua, Zhejiang province.Speaking with merchants and representatives of small business owners, he urged the trade market to make fresh achievements and contribute further to expanding both domestic and international markets and smoothing dual circulation of domestic and international trade.That call for Yiwu to scale new heights has since been reflected not only in the city's trade figures, but also in its growing international pull.With Pakistani businessman Ali Kamran obtaining his own business license on July 31, 2025, the total number of foreign-invested business entities in Yiwu reached 10,000, making Yiwu the first county-level city in China to surpass that mark.Today, investors from more than 160 countries and regions have put down roots in Yiwu.In 2025, Yiwu's total imports and exports exceeded 800 billion yuan ($117.2 billion) for the first time, reaching 836.5 billion yuan. Meanwhile, total retail sales of consumer goods reached 215.38 billion yuan, up 5.2 percent year-on-year, also the highest among all county-level regions in the province.Since the beginning of this year, turbulence in the Middle East and broader global uncertainty have once again rattled international trade, and Yiwu has inevitably felt the impact.Yet the city has continued to show striking resilience, with its total imports and exports in the first two months of the year reaching 173.56 billion yuan, up 52.8 percent year-on-year, official data showed."As merchants rooted in Yiwu, we have not only participated in the city's development experience, but also benefited from it," said Nie, the businesswoman. Nancy’s interest in horses began at 16 months of age when she received a rocking horse on the first Christmas she can remember. Her interest in the challenges disabled people faced every day started with her Great Uncle Walter who she first met when she was 3 years of age. Uncle Walter was blind. He had lost his sight when he was taking money earned from his business to the bank for deposit. He was robbed by a thug who hit him with a blackjack (as it was called in those days), knocked him unconscious and robbed him of his hard earned money. Uncle Walter was kind, sweet, and never complained about his misfortune. At the time he was a young man, engaged to be married. He broke the engagement because he did not want to burden the girl he loved. Nancy was fascinated by what he could do without sight. Play the piano, he had even taught piano. He took care of his invalid sister, and did all the cooking. Later as a teen-ager, Nancy baby sat a disabled child. In the early 1980’s Nancy went through a life altering experience. Not to be the first. But, this is when her horse “Dusty” entered her life. The Golden Palomino that she had always dreamed of having as a child. Dusty was her therapy. Dusty started the chain of events that led Nancy to her life’s mission. In 1985 Nancy was certified by Happy Horsemanship For The Handicapped, Inc. as a Certified Administrator, Instructor, and Clinician. In 1986, she opened Heads Up Therapy With Horses for disabled children and adults. While being Founder and Executive Director of Heads Up she served as Set Advisor for NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicap Association; now know as PATH) in the production of a video with President and Mrs. Regan for Therapy On Horseback. She also served as the Volunteer Training Director for the newly forming California Network of Equestrian Therapy (CALNET). She is a Certified Direct Support Professional for California, and most recently finished her Army one Source Training, PTSD Then and Now. On the more creative side Nancy has served as a Western Music DJ Host, KHTS Radio, Santa Clarita, California. The show “Around The Barn” featured guests for discussion on topics related to horses, therapy, and achievements of the disabled population, and interviews with celebrity Western Music Artists from all over the country. “Around The Barn” was nominated for Best Radio Show of Years 2011, 2012, 2013 by the Western Music Association (WMA). On a final note, she has become a story/coloring book author for a true story series called “Dusty And Friends”, an educational coloring book. At the same time, the region's economic prosperity and plentiful natural resources have fuelled the growth of gastronomic culture and thus given birth to a unique local cooking style-Zhe cuisine. With its combination of Hangzhou, Ningbo and Shaoxing cooking techniques, Zhe cuisine is famous for its freshness, mild flavors and mellow fragrance. Hangzhou cuisine is the most famous of the three, and developed more than 280 classic dishes a millennium ago. Our reporter Xiao Hua has more. Nestling on the banks of the West Lake amid tea plantations, Longjing Manor is a top-class restaurant in Hangzhou where au naturel is the key phrase; it gained global acclaim following a review by famed British food writer Fuchsia Dunlop in "The New Yorker." Dunlop highlighted the restaurant's devotion to serving traceable food, the idea of tracking food from farm to plate, and the restaurant's ultimate pursuit is to provide dishes in accordance with the season and regional produce, which lies at the heart of Zhe cuisine. Zhejiang cuisine is the most elaborate form of a culinary style more broadly called "eastern," and found throughout the old states of Wu and Yue and its bordering areas. Historically this region was known as the land of fish and rice -- one of China's most fertile agricultural regions, blessed with an abundance of raw edible materials from its land, rivers, lakes and the sea. Marco Polo reflected this when he wrote about Hangzhou in the 13th Century. He described 10 market places, where in each, 40 to 50,000 people would gather three times a week. Being able to enjoy this bounty of raw materials has made local diners' taste buds more sensitive to dishes' flavors, and thus given birth to a typical connoisseur culture. Hu Zhongying is a Zhe cuisine master chef. "Hangzhou has varieties of ingredients available to cook with. The famous Zhoushan Fishery is located here, with its abundant marine products; and the mid-province basin is full of vegetables and rice. The world-famous Jinhua Ham, Hangzhou Dragon Well Green Tea and Shaoxing Rice Wine are all vital superior ingredients in this cuisine." The ancient culinary traditions of Zhejiang still have a wide influence nowadays; and many of the famous local dishes can be traced back centuries or even millennia ago. Stewed Chicken in Clear Soup is the oldest of the Zhejiang dishes, going back more than 2,000 years. It must be cooked with the very special Shaoxing, locally produced, Yue chicken, which has tender, white meat and crisp bones. It is stewed in light soup, fresh and tasty, and was once used as a tribute for the imperial palace. These days, the chefs of Shaoxing add ham, mushrooms and bamboo shoots as auxiliary ingredients, making it even tastier. Dongpo Pork is a feature dish of Hangzhou and is believed to have been invented by the famous Song Dynasty poet and government official Su Dongpo about 1000 years ago. It's said that when Su served as the Hangzhou magistrate, the local residents were so happy with his governance that they gave him many gifts out of gratitude. In return, Su shared this dish with the local people, slicing streaky pork into cubes and simmering it in soy sauce and wine on a low heat. The braised pork tasted tender but not greasy, and melted in the mouth. The local people loved it so much that they named the dish after Su, and it became a trademark Hangzhou delicacy. West Lake vinegar fish is another must-try delicacy from Hangzhou that goes back nearly 1,000 years. The main ingredient for this dish is a freshly caught fish, which is placed in a large pot of boiling water with scallions, ginger, wine and vinegar to eliminate the fishy smell. The fish will be simply boiled for 3 minutes or so and then removed from the pot, drizzled over with a thick sweet-and-sour sauce, and finished with a garnish of cilantro and ginger. This simple cooking method is typical of the philosophy behind Zhe cuisine: to maintain as much freshness as possible. Longjing Manor chef Zhu Yinfeng is a strict follower of such thinking. "We believe the essence of the delicacy lies in the preservation of the original taste of the raw ingredient. Everything should taste fresh and pristine. We never use monosodium glutamate or other artificial flavorings that are considered indispensable in the rest of the industry. " Zhejiang cuisine's stress on freshness can also be verified by the fact that local people's dietary choices change with the seasons. With so many raw materials and twelve months' farming and fishing, there is no need for preserved food. Dining connoisseurs also go for seasonal foods because they have more cultural meaning. Shen Hongfei is a Hangzhou native and writer. "Zhejiang people choose their cooking ingredients as the seasons change. For example, during the Tomb-Sweeping Festival people will choose spring bamboo shoots to cook as they at their tenderest. At the very beginning it was a gastronomic choice, but gradually it became a tradition and a cultural token for people habitually to connect their lives with each specific season. " Chinese gourmets believe that Zhejiang is rich with ancient gastronomic associations. Its cooking wisdom is well reflected in a Chinese gastronomic classic--The Sui Garden Cookbook. It was written by the well-known Qing Dynasty poet and gastronome Yuan Mei, who was dubbed by the food writer Fuchsia Dunlop as "Chinese Brillat-Savarin".
