Partnerships, Innovation, and Long-Term Vision with Chuck Cohen

In this podcast episode, get to know Chuck Cohen, the Managing Director of Benco Dental. Chuck tells us, first and foremost, that Benco Dental's perspective revolves around the concept of long-term thinking. Instead of fixating on quarterly results, they prioritize strategic decision-making and encourage dentists to view their relationship with distributors as partnerships rather than mere transactions. This entails sharing practice goals and objectives, with the distributor actively working to help dentists achieve these objectives, creating a value-added collaboration. "The interesting thing to me is that I think we are one of the best-kept secrets in dentistry. We're the third-largest player in the space and the largest family-owned, privately-held distributor. Patterson and Schein are bigger, but we're number three. Our market share is only 12%. So, that means, on average, eight out of 10 doctors may have heard of us but have never bought anything from us. I believe that we're a bit boutiquey in that way. We only want to grow as fast as we can provide great customer service, and that's been a conscious decision over the past 90 years—to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. If we can also grow at the same time, that's good too. But customer satisfaction is what we live and die by." He goes on to explain how independent dental practices outperformed large dental chains and DSOs in the post-pandemic period, proving their resilience and efficiency. Despite initial fears of DSO dominance, independent practices demonstrated impressive survival and recovery. This highlights the effectiveness of dental infection control procedures and the entrepreneurial spirit of independent practices. Overall, the dental profession showcased its ability to adapt and thrive during and after the pandemic. In the ever-evolving landscape of dentistry, Benco Dental sees itself as a support system for both dentists and labs. A prime example is how to approach 3D printing. "3D printing is going to change every single thing about dentistry, no matter what specialty you're in, no matter whether you're a lab, a general dentist, an endodontist, you need a 3D printing strategy. There are many opportunities to make mistakes in a 3D printing strategy, and the 3D printing strategy for one practice is going to be different from somebody down the street. There are many opportunities to make a mistake. Who can you partner with that's willing to help you figure out how to apply all these new whiz-bang technologies effectively into your practice? You need someone who understands the landscape, someone who sees other offices, someone who says, 'You know what, that is what I would recommend for Dr. Smith down the street, but it's not for you. You need to do this instead because you're a smaller volume practice.' That's where a partner can come in and help guide you. There will be a lot of dentists who say, 'okay, I'm going to figure this out on my own,' and I can guarantee a lot of them are going to make mistakes along the way because it's complicated and it's changing quickly, and that's where a distributor rep and partner can make all the difference in the world," says Chuck. Moreover, Benco Dental places great importance on supporting small, innovative manufacturers. They actively seek out and champion these entrepreneurial companies, ensuring they receive the recognition and attention they deserve within the dental industry. Benco facilitates the entry of innovative products into the market and collaborates with larger manufacturers to provide cost-effective solutions, adapting to the industry's changing dynamics. Innovation is another cornerstone of Benco Dental's strategy. They actively seek out partnerships with innovative companies to bring cutting-edge products and services to dentists. One noteworthy example is their early collaboration with Overjet, a leading AI company in dentistry, enabling dentists to stay at the forefront of technological advances. An Economical Look At Dental Technology with Dr. Parag Kachalia

Dr. Parag Kachalia is one of the most influential people in dentistry. And as one of the Seattle Study Club's Top 10 Young Educators, he's using his influence to help other dentists achieve their best in their business. His only regret in his career is not joining the Study Club sooner. As dentists, we are responsible for the wellness of our patients, but it's also our job to run a successful business. And Dr. Kachalia knows that dentistry is about more than just the 32 teeth in the mouth. He's the rare kind of dentist who loves the business side of things. He minored in economics and explains how that education helps him more in his daily practice (and as a mentor) than any physiology course he took in college. Economics and dentistry weren't always the plan — Dr. Kachalia wanted to be an oncologist, but he's always been an economist at heart. His family ran their own business, and while he was inspired to take economics courses, not many other dental students are. In addition, many teachers aren't prepared to teach the type of economics we need to run a successful business in the 2020s. Dr. Kachalia discusses this disconnect between the university and the practice and how it inspired him to get involved with the Seattle Study Club. One of the biggest things he's doing with the Study Club is discussing new types of dental technology, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how to pick out what kind of tech you need in your practice. There are three criteria Dr. Kachalia uses before he invests in new equipment or technology, and he shares how we can apply his process to all business investments we make. It's important to look at how these new kinds of dental technology will work for your practice and how these tools will benefit you not only as a dentist but also as a business owner. Dr. Lisa Germain wears many hats. If you heard her on The Dental Slang Podcast before, then you'll recognize her as an educator, podcaster, artist, author, and dentist. She has a New Orleans practice she's owned for over three decades. She's also faced many hardships and losses over the past few years that have changed how she approaches her life and business. As a dentist, Dr. Germain is one of the leading proponents of Botox for pain management. Using Botox for pain management is something within a dentist's wheelhouse, but many of the first to recommend Botox were shunned for it. We discuss the initial pushback she received from other dentists and patients, how attitudes today are changing, and what this means for the future of dentistry. Dr. Germain works closely with patients who suffer from TMJ and has researched many different treatment methods for them. She is writing a new book with colleague and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Benji Dhillon to help other dentists better understand this treatment method, and she refers to book writing as a “labor of love.”  Writing, in particular, is a labor of love that has inspired a well of healing for Dr. Germain. Introducing Dentists to Ceramic Implants with Dr. Sammy Noumbissi

Dr. Sammy Noumbissi is a dental surgeon and provider who changed the game decades ago by adding ceramic implants to his repertoire. While other dentists continued to use titanium implants. Dr. Noumbissi built his practice by listening to his patients. His first decade as a dentist was traditional, working as a general practitioner and using titanium implants. But when he returned to practice on the east coast, he started to work with a different type of patient. The patients in his neighborhood prefer a holistic approach, and they began to ask questions about the kinds of materials he was using in his implants.  Today, our patients have the same access to information that we do and often come into the office with in-depth questions or recommendations of the kinds of treatments they want to have. Dr. Noumbissi recommends that dentists humble themselves and listen to their patients. Then, when they come to us with questions about new procedures or technology, you can take it as an opportunity to learn.  Because ceramic implants will not be for your conventional patient, Dr. Noumbissi goes through the protocol he uses to determine if his patient is the right fit for ceramic implants. We discuss the systematic approach he uses to assess patients' health and lifestyles and how it will impact how patients react to different implant materials. Dentistry isn't the typical industry that is run by consumers, except when it comes to implants. But until dentists get involved with these new media and materials, the market will always be missing something. Ceramic implants need the eyes of multiple dentists on them. We are the ones who know teeth the best, and we will think of the solutions necessary to improve these products for our patients. Change like this isn't easy, but it can get easier with dentists like Dr. Noumbissi running ahead for us. In our opinion, Dr. Eric Jones is the definition of a Super GP. There is nothing he won't do for his patients in the Atlanta-Metro area. He's adopted a new kind of “hybrid practice” model that incorporates a wide variety of procedures and multi-practice elements.  A hybrid office is an innovative way to give your patients exactly what they need while working together with other dentists. Dr. Jones can sometimes complete ten or more different procedures in one day. He walks us through a typical day in his practice and discusses some of the differences he sees between implant patients vs. filling patients.  Dr. Jones spent the first two years of his career in a small family practice, learning how to treat people and help patients live healthier lives. We discuss how this differs from a corporate dental setting and why we need to change the way we approach dentistry that focuses more on the patient experience.  Creating the right patient experience doesn't have to fall entirely on your shoulders. Dr. Jones recommends seeking out mentors, coaches, and other dentists who have the resources you need. This is how he sparked the idea for a hybrid dental office -- a business model where dentists work together to create a better work-life balance.  Dr. Jones works with dentists, helping them with everything from business planning to patient communication to team development and hiring the right people. He wants dentists to feel confident in their skills and their community. The idea is to break away from the corporate model and help dentists get to where they want to be while maintaining control of their practice and their business. Dr. Ardalan and Dr. Phelps go way back, having gone to university at UNC-Chapel Hill and reuniting again in dental school at NOVA in Ft. Lauderdale. But they took different paths in dental school, and Dr. Reza Ardalan has become one of the premier pediatric dentists in the Carolinas.  Pediatric dentistry is the top choice among incoming dentists, but Dr. Ardalan never thought he'd end up there. He saw other dentists at school studying endodontics and tried to fit in, but it wasn't his passion. However, a pediatric practice fits his lifestyle, and we discuss some of the differences between pediatric vs. general practices that inspired Dr. Ardalan to work with children.  Talking to children is much different than speaking with parents or adult patients, and the hallmark of a pediatric dentist is their ability to communicate. It's important to get down to their level and explain the procedures in their terms, but treating kids with respect and understanding is key in Dr. Ardalan's offices.  Dr. Ardalan creates the right office experience that makes this level of communication possible. Dr. Ardalan designed spaces for children, teens, and even their parents with the intent of spoiling the whole family at the dentist's office. And while he may have always had an idea of how he wanted to treat patients when starting his practice, there were many learning experiences along the way that helped him develop the seamless workflow he has now.  To help other dentists understand this workflow, Dr. Ardalan is writing a book that goes beyond the clinical side of pediatrics. We discuss some of the communication techniques, office design, and team building Dr. Ardalan uses in his office. In addition, he shares some of the slang used in his office to help kids better understand the experience.  Experience is key, and, as dentists, it's our job to guide our patients through it so they can live healthier lives. It's time to think outside of the box and give families a new way to think about going to the dentist.  In This Episode You Will Learn The differences between pediatric and general dentistry 9:09 How to work with a patient who does not want to be in the dentist's chair 17:31 The importance of airways and the tongue in pediatric dentistry 29:21 The role orthodontics plays in a pediatric practice 34:40 Some Questions We Ask What hooked Dr. Ardalan on pediatric dentistry? 5:50 How does Dr. Ardalan differentiate his practice from another? 12:00 How does Dr. Ardalan build trust with the children he treats? 25:56 What inspired Dr. Ardalan to write a book? 37:50 What slang does Dr. Ardalan use with the kids in the chair? 43:53 Resources Visit our website: www.DentalSlang.com Connect with us on Facebook: Dental Slang Get in touch with Dr. Ardalan: drreza@ardalandental.com Follow Dr. Ardalan on TikTok: @ArdalanDental

GPs should not be intimidated by implants, Dr. Little says. He breaks down his system for extracting, grafting, and placing implants and shares his opinion on the different media he's using with his patients. He explains his logic behind the biologics of implants and what companies he's working with to procure suitable membranes.  Dr. Little will be writing a book for GPs that will provide a more hands-on experience through video and other digital resources. He wants dentists to avoid some of the common pitfalls he fell victim to. But, most importantly, he wants dentists to continue thinking traditionally. Among all of the new technology and digital accouterments, we will still need to rely on our skills first and foremost. Technology is here to improve our workflow and make us more efficient, but it can't replace your knowledge. The traditional methods provide a strong foundation for dentists to grow in their careers and specialties.  To keep his fellow dentists inspired to learn, Dr. Little is creating an online educational studio for fellow dentists who are hungry for knowledge and want to learn new skills. Full-mouth rehabilitation is at the center of Dr. Christian Yaste's dental philosophy. He is the founder of Ballantyne Center for Dentistry and Charlotte Dental Implant Solutions in Charlotte, North Carolina. He specializes in cosmetic dentistry and wants general dentists to know they don't have to shy away from full-arch implants. Dr. Yaste took many different paths on his career trajectory -- from dental school in Michigan to private practice and corporate dentistry to establishing his own cosmetic practice. A fortuitous presentation by Nobel changed the way Dr. Yaste looked at dentistry forever, but it would take almost 20 years to incorporate implants into his practice.  He shares how his first experience with full-arch implants was a disaster and how he learned to play to his strengths. More specifically, when it came to implant protocols, Dr. Yaste wanted something more streamlined, more digital, than what was available at the time and quickly realized it was something he would have to design on his own. There were many failures during that trial-and-error period, but that's how we learn, Dr. Yaste says, and without the mistakes, he would never have developed the seamless implant workflow for patients and procedures he has now. Dr. Yaste shares this patient workflow with us, discussing the different types of patients, sedation techniques, and digital tools he uses to produce the perfect patient experience. In addition, he provides a more practical way of looking at these protocols, a procedure that will be outlined in Dr. Yaste's new book focused on full-arch implants. His guide will help even the newest dentist get comfortable with the procedures. Because being a good dentist isn't just about the procedures or the technology. Dentists can easily learn new skill sets to expand their practice in this digital age. But, Dr. Yaste warns if your dental practice lacks core values, you'll always just be treading water. Your dental business will never take off if you don't invest in yourself and the team that works with you. When you invest in the people you work with, it becomes a joy to work with them every day. And this kind of prosperity mindset will translate into your business practice. She grew up in Austin, Texas, a city that now welcomes over 150 new residents every day, and the growth of her dental career mirrors the city's development. Dr. Olson started in dentistry earlier than most of us, working for her orthodontist at 15. This gave her the chance to experience a dental office from front to back. So, when it came time to graduate dental school, she knew she wanted to run her own practice. She was lucky enough to start an office-sharing agreement, and she shares a bit of what she learned from working together with a friend and mentor.  Working together with her community is key to Dr. Olson's success as a dentist. She discusses how the relationships she's built over the years with different people in this field have shaped her own practice. The enrichment emphasizes this type of almost-familial collaboration she gives her team in helping them grow and develop, whether they're working for her or with her.  Dr. Olson's community is becoming a tangible reality now as she moves into a brand new office building with all of her referral partners. She can now refer her patients to endodontists and periodontists only a floor or two up rather than across town. She shares what it's like to move into a new space after over 20 years of familiarity, and we discuss what it's like to plan and design a brand new dental office.  Working with her community also inspired Dr. Olson to start a book. Dr. Joe McEnhill sort of fell into dentistry. As a student in Belfast, he was torn between medicine and dentistry. But, he was meant to be a dentist. After all, his sister and both of his brothers are also dentists.  He'll jokingly tell you he's the best of them because he has the most letters after his name. We think he's one of the best because of his hunger for knowledge and skills as a surgical dentist. Yes, dental surgery can be intimidating. Do you remember how many teeth you extracted in dental school? You aren't alone — we can count how many we practiced extractions on one hand. That's why Dr. McEnhill recommends starting small and simple to build your confidence. The first steps he took into dental surgery were removing wisdom teeth and fixing fractured jaws.  Starting with the basics will give you the foundation you need to build a robust set of skills. Then, build a portfolio gradually and play to your strengths and the needs of your patients. Dr. McEnhill discusses how owning a dental practice in a small town impacted his desire to learn new skills. He advises starting with techniques and practices you can fit into your schedule and space. But when your patients have to wait weeks or even months out for referral appointments, learning how to do minor surgeries for their sake can make a world of difference. To get dentists comfortable with the surgery side of things, Dr. McEnhill is developing his own dental surgery courses for dentists —The Dental Speakeasy. These video courses come with a hands-on perspective to give dentists a chance to hone basic surgical skills. These courses are for dentists who sometimes get stuck with an ornery tooth that just won't come out. Surgical skills can give you what you need to step back and take a new approach. Dr. McEnhill offers advice on how to take that leap and the steps he's taking himself to get over the hurdles of imposter syndrome. This is a seemingly wild path from his previous experiences as a butcher and bike mechanic. Overall, Dr. Jeal and his wife have owned six dental practices, and he offers his insight into what it's like to have to hit the ground running. Learning a bunch of things in a hurry is never easy, but he shares what he's learned, and we discuss all of the highs and lows of growing and marketing for a multi-practice business. When we talk about growth, we're discussing more than the financial. Growth means team development and learning how to train your team and hire the type of people who are internally motivated for success. We discuss the biggest challenge of hiring and keeping good people and how the future of multi-practice dentistry is changing.  Dr. Jeal doesn't buy into all the “doom-and-gloom talk,” he says, and he shares what he's looking forward to most in our industry. He's had to change up his marketing strategy like many of us after COVID-19, but the $100,000 Day strategy he developed with his wife is stronger than ever. We discuss how they keep up with it and more ways he continues to reach patients during the pandemic. There's a key framework to understanding and talking to people, Dr. Jeal says. Dr. Mike Grossman is here to give us a first-hand look at the ins and outs of being a multi-practice owner. Currently, he has 10 practices and is looking for more dentists who want to work and adapt to the multi-practice business model. By multi-practice we also mean multi-skilled, and utilizing orthodontics is one way to expand your practice. For Dr. Grossman, having ortho in-office keeps him busy.  It's hard to compete with the celebrity endorsements mail-order ortho companies use, but we can offer our patients something just as convenient. In addition, offering multiple services gives you a practice within your practice, one where your patients already know the dental team. And if you want to ultimately run a multi-practice business, it's an excellent place to start. Dr. Grossman discusses what the dynamic looks like in a multi-service, multi-practice dental office and the kind of technology dentists need if they want to start implementing ortho. If adding orthodontics to your practice is the goal, start with the proper training. Dr. Grossman recommends Progressive Orthodontic Seminars (although the straight-wire technique is his preferred method). He also offers advice on how to diagnose in ortho and where dentists can learn more about skeleto-dental diagnostics. To help his fellow dentists learn more about ortho and gain the skills they need to become multi-practice business owners, Dr. Grossman will be launching a new Dental Movement program. The Dental Movement will educate dentists and help implement new services and systems in their offices with online and in-person training. Along with his upcoming book, Dr. Grossman hopes to bring orthodontics to the forefront of general dentistry.  In This Episode You Will Learn How to implement orthodontics into your general practice 9:53 Where dentists can learn more about ortho treatments 12:37 What's coming up in Dr. Grossman's new book 15:45 What is the Dental Movement 19:00 Who makes up the team behind the Dental Movement 29:01 Some Questions We Ask What is it like being a multi-practice owner? 3:59 What is Dr. Grossman's biggest success as a multi-practice owner? 6:20 Why should you be worried about the trend of DIY orthodontics? 22:23 How can dentists compete with DIY and mail-order orthodontics? 27:04 What technology do dentists need to start practicing orthodontics? 31:42 What is Dr. Grossman's favorite ortho slang? 36:38 Resources: Visit our website: www.DentalSlang.com Connect with us on Facebook: Dental Slang

Sales can be a dirty word in dentistry, but it doesn't have to be. Dr. Bao-Tran Nguyen, co-founder of Fast Growth Practice, tells us about her approach to marketing that will actually get you excited about…shh… sales.  Remember, we're not selling something people don't need. Therefore, your sales strategy shouldn't be selling certain types of treatments. Instead, the strategy you should focus on is how you communicate with patients. Dr. Nguyen offers advice on the right power questions to ask that lead patients to the point where they take ownership and say exactly what they need  so you can help them with a solution. After all, when you truly believe in your solutions then selling is serving! Too often, too many dentists are on autopilot. We're all very good at diagnosing, but we aren't always so good at communicating these diagnoses and treatment plans to our patients. Unfortunately, communication isn't something they teach in dental school. That's where Dr. Nguyen comes in. Of course, dentists must be willing to change themselves, but it's never too late to learn something new, especially when it comes to marketing. It takes a certain kind of personality to seek out new opportunities and embrace change, but it gets so much easier once you take that first step. Smile Analysis and How to Talk to Patients with Dr. Elaine Halley

At the heart of Dental Slang, we are all about communication. How we talk to patients is one of the most important elements of our practice. And now that patients can find us on social media and research everything they need to know before they even come in for treatment, it's vital that we know how to talk to them and approach their treatment planning with care.  Dr. Elaine Halley discusses how to do just that. As a practicing dentist and the Clinical Director of a group practice with 8 different locations in Scotland, Dr. Halley has experience on both sides of dentistry — as a teacher and as a student. And she is a rare one. She loves the teaching side of things just as much as the practice, and she shares how her teachers inspired her to take an educator's path of her own. What's the biggest lesson Dr. Halley has learned as a teacher and a dentist? How crucial it is to invest in interpersonal skills.  Our body language and the words we use with patients when we explain treatment procedures are just as important as the treatment itself. She recommends studying communication, along with business and personal development, to improve your practice and become a better dentist. How can you be a better communicator? These are the kinds of questions Dr. Halley inspires us to ask ourselves. As digital technology continues to lead to brand new developments in dentistry, the role of a modern dentist will shift to educator as well as doctor. It will be up to us to teach our patients about their treatment options and use technology to facilitate their understanding. Dr. Halley shares her favorite tools and the slang she uses in the office to explain smile analysis and more to her patients.  Dr. Halley wants to change the narrative and inspire her fellow dentists to have more confidence about new treatment procedures. The mouth is a 3D jigsaw puzzle, she explains, and she wants to see modern dentists continuing to adopt a more comprehensive model that helps them better understand these newer treatment options and how to explain them to their patients. There is always a place for single-tooth dentistry, but oral health is multifaceted. Learning to recognize when more comprehensive treatments are needed will improve your practice.  In This Episode You Will Learn How Dr. Halley got into dentistry 1:14 How dentistry has changed over the past ten years 12:47 Where to find the skills to treat patients' overall oral health over a single tooth 23:40 Ways to educate patients about all of the different treatment opportunities available 28:35 Dr. Halley's favorite tools and tech for educating patients 35:28 The dental slang Dr. Halley uses in her offices 44:58 Some Questions We Ask What does a typical week of dental practice look like for Dr. Halley? 3:17 Which skills should we develop to become better dentists? 10:20 What trends has Dr. Halley seen among younger dentists? 20:25 What is Dr. Halley's role as Clinical Director of a group practice? 26:00 What inspired Dr. Halley to write a book about smile analysis? 31:34 How does smile analysis influence Dr. Halley's practice and how she talks to patients? 37:53 Resources: Visit our website: www.DentalSlang.com Connect with us on Facebook: Dental Slang

Going Digital with Dental Technology Tips from Dr. Andrea Shepperson

Dental Slang is going all the way to New Zealand to talk to Dr. Andrea Shepperson — digitally, of course. Dr. Shepperson is a dentist and educator who has spent much of her career building an international family of dentists. When she took a year off from school to travel the world, who would have guessed she'd create a network of dentists and mentors from all over the globe! We never stop learning as dentists, she says, and this motto has carried her through her career. When she started her own practice, she was lucky enough to have mentors to guide her and develop her knowledge as both a business owner and a dentist. She shares some of the most important mentors to her, including Dr. John Kois, Dr. Laurence Walsh, and Christian Coachmen of Digital Smile Design. Digital dentistry is a big part of Dr. Shepperson's practice. First, she describes her dream digital dental office for us, then walks us through the digital tools and new technology she is using in her office right now to help patients battle tooth erosion.  From wireless servers that make it possible to access files and photos from anywhere in the office, to “patient-specific motion” scanners that capture how individual patients use their teeth, these digital tools are changing the way we practice dentistry.  Dental technology not only makes our job easier but can actually help us build better relationships with our patients. Things like digital photography and 3D printing put dental care into a context that a patient can see, touch, ask questions about, and understand. Using technology to take an emotional approach to dentistry like this makes it easier to have those hard conversations about preventative treatments and expensive implants.  Dr. Shepperson is flipping the traditional dental process upside down, starting with that first appointment with new patients, and she has tips for how dentists can make treatment plans that fit within a patient's budget. Going digital can change the cost of things and give you the ability to manufacture many things in-house. Dr. Shepperson shares the dental slang she uses to help patients understand tooth wear and the different treatment methods she offers.  In This Episode You Will Learn What the pandemic lockdown looks like in New Zealand 1:50 Why you never stop learning as a dentist 14:04 How to evolve your practice style to allow for growth 20:21 How to use new dental technology to track tooth wear 28:00 How to better address and diagnose our patients in this digital age 35:10 The best ways to start the preventative conversation with patients 39:11 Dr. Shepperson's go-to dental slang 52:53 Some Questions We Ask What is dental school like in New Zealand? 7:23 What inspired Dr. Shepperson to take a year off and travel the world? 11:22 Who are Dr. Shepperson's mentors? 17:37 How can dentists use Dr. Shepperson's new book? 24:00 What does Dr. Shepperson's dream dental office look like? 31:56 How can dentists make treatments fit into a patient's budget? 43:28 What kind of training courses are offered at Shepperson Education? 49:47 Resources: Visit our website: www.DentalSlang.com Connect with us on Facebook: Dental Slang Learn from Dr. Andrea Shepperson's lectures and courses: AndreaShepperson.com

Asking Ourselves Why With Dr. Taite Anderson

Dr. Taite Anderson is here to talk about the art of what we do. We dare you not to be inspired to look at dentistry and oral surgery a little bit differently after this conversation. We can't wait for Dr. Anderson's new book — The Art of Oral Surgery — which is where this idea of dentist-as-artist really comes to life. Dr. Anderson discusses case studies and analogies he plans on using in the book and dives deep into the creative process involved in writing, organizing, and publishing a dental textbook.  For Dr. Anderson, one of the most well-balanced dentists we know, writing is an opportunity to bring his creative side into dentistry. It encourages him to practice what he preaches, he says, by forcing him to look at things differently and ask himself why: Why am I using this particular instrument? Why am I doing surgery in this order? Changing your perspective keeps the mind sharp and looking for new ways to learn, and there's never a shortage of learning opportunities in a dental office.  Dr. Anderson admits that he can sometimes be distracted by new dental technology. He takes us through what he likes to call “off-roading” with a couple of his favorite tools, and shares how these moments where dentist, patient, and technology meet have inspired him to write this new book. Lastly, digital technology takes a lot of the stress and guesswork out of what we do. This makes it easier for us as dentists, yes, but the peace of mind it brings a patient is unbeatable. Being able to simplify the complexities of oral surgery into easily digestible information is a craft in and of itself, and Dr. Anderson shares how he's been able to do just that and more, with a little help from what he calls a “high-five” from his team. Slangers — get ready to welcome back Dr. Amanda Seay, the cosmetic dentist who moonlights as an extraordinary dental photographer. She's releasing her new book on dental photography, See, just in time for the new year, but what if we told you that dental school was never part of her plan? Would you believe it?  Dr. Seay was a completely different person before dental school. She never really had a solid plan for her future, and perfecting smiles never even crossed her mind. She was a dancer, trained in ballet, and later a cheerleading instructor in college. Dental school wasn't even on her radar until her best friend Erin mentioned she was going.  Random moments like these are speckled throughout Dr. Seay's incredible journey, and these random moments lead her to some really big things. You never know who you're going to meet in your life, or where these people might lead you. When you find inspiration in a best friend or a mentor (sometimes they can be both!), it can open up so many different doors of opportunity. Dr. Seay takes us down all the twists and turns of her career path, one she never once considered, and introduces us to all of the key people who influenced her.  The twisty journey of life reminds us that our lives can take any number of directions. However, the path forward is never easy. We can all empathize with that kind of frustration.  Dr. Seay shares some slang and words she doesn't like, like the word “quit”. No one wants to be a quitter, but sometimes an ending is a lesson in letting go and opening yourself up to new opportunities. If things stay the same, you're never going to grow. One of the biggest lessons Dr. Seay learned from teaching her fellow dentists is that you have to keep learning yourself if you want to continue to teach others. Endodontics is intimidating, but it can be a lot easier than you think. Dr. William Nudera is in his tenth year as an endodontics professor and is here to teach us a little bit about the instruments and the tricks of the trade he uses daily.  Finding the best instruments is a good place to start, but it's not about the brand name for Bill. He recommends getting a few samples from multiple companies and playing around with them. Endo files are all the same size these days, and to find the best one for your root canal, you need to know how it feels in your hand.  How heavy-handed you are can influence which tools you choose, and working with tools that feel good in your hand is the easiest way to build your confidence. Bill gives us an abridged discussion of his protocol for treating a tooth with a root canal. For him, everything in endodontics starts with a cone-beam image, and he breaks down every step he takes to make the right decisions for his patient.  He shares everything, from the risks of using a one-file system during a root canal to which target shaping file he chooses to use. The dental slang he uses during the procedure is also unique, and we discuss what it means to keep your size 10 “super-loose” and how it can improve your practice.  Improving your practice is key to becoming a better and more confident endodontist. Plenty of textbooks teach dentists about endo, but very few teach us how to practice endo. Bill intends to fill that gap with his own book, New Endo: Rethinking Endodontics. It's not for the first-year dental student, but it's a manual you and your team can use to diagnose why a patient needs a root canal, the steps you can take to complete the procedure, and when it is necessary to refer out.  There are too many teeth and not enough endodontists! Bill's goal is to inspire general dentists to confidently complete endo procedures without breaking the bank on expensive equipment. Knowing your skillset and knowing when to refer patients to a specialist is part of being a good dentist. Tune in now to learn what it takes to refine your skills and build your confidence in endo. The last time we had Dr. Wael Garine on Dental Slang, we discussed non-verbal slang and prosthodontics. Dr. Garine is without a doubt a wizard when it comes to prosthetics and implant dentistry, but it's his new role as Director of Operations at the Seattle Study Club that earned him a spot on Incisal Edge Magazine's 2021 list of most influential people in dentistry.  Dr. Garine currently owns a multi-practice in Florida and operates out of two locations. Running a multi-practice sort of fell into his lap when a friend and fellow dentist offered him his office and his patients after decided to quit the practice, but it was exactly what he wanted. Owning a multi-practice not only provides more room to service more patients but also gives Dr. Garine more free time to spend his energy on what he truly loves to do: teach. Dr. Garine always wanted to teach and help fellow dentists stay up-to-date with the latest dental tech, tools, and procedures. Seattle Study Club offers up the perfect opportunity to do so. Dr. Garine has been involved with the club for 14 years and shares a few of his experiences starting and what path led him to eventually become a director. Seattle Study Club is a peer-to-peer learning program that brings local dentists together to learn new tricks of the trade and share their experiences with one another. Directors of the local clubs are free to develop their own curriculum to cater to the needs of the dentists in that area, and there are group-learning programs and different educational opportunities offered throughout the year. With the pandemic, many of these programs have been moved online, and Dr. Garine discusses this transition and how listeners can get access to past speakers and symposiums. Dr. Garine's new role as Director of Operations allows him to continue teaching and guiding other dentists and directors, but he now also has the opportunity to bring in new speakers, new learning modules, and grow the network with even more dentists. The slang Dr. Ali Afshar uses to describe his dental repertoire is “tacklebox”, and his tacklebox includes implant surgery, restoration, and treatment planning. He uses both free-hand and guided surgeries, which is a skill he thinks many lose in dental schools that promote only guided surgeries. If you only learn guided surgery, you may be missing out on the technical knowledge needed to help your patients plan out their treatment and healing processes. Dental students are graduating school and immediately want to become implant dentists without fully understanding the precision that goes into this practice and the healing that is necessary after implant surgery, and Dr. Afshar sees a lot of rehabs and complicated cases of implants that need to be repaired or completely taken out and redone. For him, the biggest weakness in our industry is diagnostics and treatment planning.  This is where his tacklebox comes in handy. Knowing how to perform surgery is one thing but understanding the human body and its ability to heal can help you better understand your role as a dentist in this healing process. Every patient is different, and sometimes they aren't all going to fit neatly into your guided procedure or surgery.  That's why Dr. Afshar created Peer Education In Dentistry. It is a program that provides professional mentorship to fellow dentists in Canada looking for hands-on training to build their own tackle boxes of skills. Dr. Afshar runs a referral-only dental practice in Alberta, Canada, which has different marketing laws than in the US. This makes referrals the best-case scenario when it comes to promoting his practice. But Dr. Shuman wanted to do things a bit differently.  He wanted to create a group practice that would give everything his patients would need in one place, and it eventually grew into a practice with 10 dentists and 25 hygienists specializing in different things. But life can take a turn you can't anticipate, and that's exactly what happened when Walt Disney called. You might think a person in their right mind wouldn't turn down an offer from Disney, but that's exactly what Dr. Shuman did. He didn't agree with Disney's 25th-anniversary celebration that overlooked the kids and families who could never afford to visit Walt Disney World, and he told them so. Little did he know that two days later Disney would call him back.   What does Disney have to do with dentistry? Nothing, at first. But once Dr. Shuman won the Mousecar award, it opened new doors for him and introduced him to a new type of investor in the dental community. These investors were looking into technology and the internet in 1998, and Dr. Shuman dropped his practice and everything he had to commit to a brand new kind of dental education that would operate online. Because tailoring social media posts is easier than writing a cover letter, mostly because Dr. Higton only posts images that inspire her.  Dr. Higton didn't really like social media at first, but she focused on finding a genuine way to connect with people online that was less about likes and more about education. The secret to being successful on social media, she says, is to inspire. She takes time to reply to every message and only makes posts about general dentistry to help our community learn the tips and tricks of the trade. Sincerity like that translates through a screen. Dr. Higton uses Instagram as an educational tool and she's sharing some of the things she's learned over the years creating her own following online. She discusses the rules she has about what types of photos to post and how to know your audience if you want to gain momentum on social media.  You used to have to be published in journals and speak at universities to gain recognition as a dentist, but now, a social media account with the right content can skyrocket you to the front of the crowd. DC Dental Clinical Director Dr. Lisa Germain shares her passion for dental education and training on this episode of the Dental Slang podcast. She’s working to bridge the gap between endodontists and dental implants—which is no easy task. Dr. Germain has taken on this challenge in stride thanks to her unique perspective on what it means to be a better endodontist and a better dentist. To Dr. Germain, being a better dentist means giving patients complete dental care. Learning about implants is just one of the steps she’s taking to provide her patients with the best care possible. Part of her role at DC Dental is to help other dentists offer that level of care as well, and she’s doing that by leading the company’s educational webinar program. That’s right. DC Dental offers more than just dental supplies and tools. The webinar program arms dentists with the education they need to not only use these supplies and tools, but also to hone their dental skills—for free. In this episode, we tell you how you can take advantage of this continuing education opportunity so you can become a better dentist. Jodi and our guest, Dr. Rich Madow, are swapping a lot of slang on this episode. From the elusive “golden age” of dentistry to giving patients the “royal treatment”, dentists are using all sorts of slang to communicate with their dental team these days. After all, to be a successful dentist, communication with your team is key.  And building a successful dental team is Dr. Rich’s specialty.  You might recognize Dr. Rich from the annual TBSE Dental Convention in Las Vegas, but on this episode we’re talking about more than just the convention circuit. Dr. Rich has a love for dentistry that is empowering, and there are ways continuing dental education and fun can go hand-in-hand.  Dental school can be fun? They are bringing coaches and mentors together to teach dentists how to actually enjoy their careers and increase profitability all at the same time.  Dr. Rich is passionate about modernizing the dental practice, and he shares ways we can all supercharge our own practices with new slang, new perspectives, and new attitudes. Jodi is a little partial to this episode’s guest, Dr. Robin Bethell. He’s chatting with us from Austin, and she’s more than happy to share the mic with another Texan. And Dr. Bethell has important tips to share. He’s letting us in on the secret to mastering Yelp reviews—and it might surprise you. To Dr. Bethell, now is the best time to be a dentist, even with the rising cost of tuition. The learning opportunities are endless. It’s so easy for modern dentists to get online, learn new skills, get certified, and integrate those skills right into their practice. There’s little reason to refer out anymore and risk losing patients, although Dr. Bethell has a different theory on that. Referrals aren’t the same as they used to be. Back in the day, when we referred a patient out for niche care, we often didn’t see that patient again for years. Today, the new word for referral is “collaboration.” We aren’t just sending patients away anymore. Rather, Dr. Bethell and his group practice of fellow dentists use referrals as an opportunity to discuss, collaborate, and learn from another practicing dentist or orthodontist. Patients benefit from this, too. When we work together to provide patients with optimal care, we’re going to get positive feedback. That’s where Yelp comes in, though there are times when we’ll receive negative reviews as well. Yes, negative reviews are scary, but the secret to handling them is actually quite simple. The No. 1 thing you can do with a negative Yelp review is face it head on. Dr. Bethell shares his tips for facing negative reviews, and the patients who write them, on this episode. Once you overcome the initial awkward hurdle of talking to an angry patient, Dr. Bethell’s techniques are very simple. The secret is how you speak to your patients. We go over some of the slang and sayings you can use to beat negative reviews and really connect with your patients. Tune in now to learn how to master Yelp reviews from a dentist who has done it. This episode of the Dental Slang Podcast is special because we’re talking to one of the most innovative dentists in the industry, Dr. Gina Dorfman. Dr. Dorfman, the co-founder of YAPI, knew she wanted to be a dentist at 16, but running her own business was her ultimate goal. Fast forward two decades later and not only does she have her own dental practice, she’s also created a signature piece of software that’s changing the way we run our offices. YAPI is an automated software program that integrates into existing practice management software to streamline tedious day-to-day office activities. Data entry, scans and appointment calendars are all automated so you and your team members can spend time working as humans should. Like Dr. Dorfman says, “Let software do what software does best: busywork.” Humans are good at building relationships. When you streamline your dental office’s busywork and communication, you can spend more time building the relationships that matter most—those with your patients and your team. After all, that’s what inspired Dr. Dorfman to create YAPI in the first place. YAPI helps dentists tackle the challenges they face every day. Whether it’s leadership issues, creating a team culture, or managing difficult patients, there are plenty of opportunities to learn how to become a better leader. Dr. Dorfman developed YAPI so she could free up her time and improve her leadership skills, and so that her team and other dentists could have the opportunity to do the same. There are a few choice words Dr. Dorfman likes to use in her practice. For example, she’s learned ways to talk to patients that really makes them stop and think about their treatment plans rather than resist them. She shares some of that slang, and a few of her favorite questions to ask patients, in this episode. Dr. Dorfman was lucky enough to put her own leadership theories and ideas to the test right in her own dental practice, and it led her to develop some truly innovative software. But it didn’t come easy. She talks about some of the challenges she faced in her office and what inspired her to become the leader she is today. There’s no such thing as a “natural-born leader,” and developing your own leadership skills could be the change you need to really boost your career. Tune in now to hear Dr. Dorfman’s story. We talk a lot about words on the Dental Slang Podcast, but today’s guest, Dr. Wael Garine, offers creative ways to communicate that we’ve been overlooking. Dr. Garine, the prosthodontics rock star from the Seattle Study Club, surprises us with some of the non-verbal slang he’s using in his practice. Tiny, silent gestures can speak volumes without alarming patients—and that’s something all dentists want to avoid. The Apple Watch made it easy for Dr. Garine to develop non-verbal slang in his office. The team sends him texts when patients are ready or when he has a phone call, for example, without disturbing patients. During this episode, we discuss how this slang works, and reveal other gestures we’ve caught ourselves using to communicate with team members when speaking isn’t an option. Our unique slang makes it easy to speak metaphorically about dental treatment, but what happens when you need to explain a real treatment plan to an unresponsive patient? Dr. Garine, an experienced restorative and implant dentist, has had many opportunities to explain different treatment options to all kinds of patients, and he shares some of those experiences with us on this episode. He also discusses which dental prosthetics he’s recommending to his patients and why e.max crowns have become his favorite. There’s more to prosthodontics than aesthetics. Dr. Garine has invested in different tools, treatments, and technology to bring his dental practice into the 21st century. Listen to the podcast to learn more about how prosthodontics has evolved. We’re learning the slang of a very distinguished dentist on this episode of The Dental Slang Podcast. Dr. Bill Dickerson has quite the resume - he’s the founder and CEO of the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies, he’s a published author (more than just dental books too!), and he was also one of Jodi’s favorite professors while she studied at Baylor. But we aren’t just talking about classroom studies today. Dr. Bill is here to discuss what he’s been focusing on for the past twenty years: transforming the dental industry.  Like many of us dentists, Dr. Bill was burnt out on the traditional approach to dental care. The stuffy offices, the lagging technology, even the lack of physiological-based treatments really took a toll on what used to be his passion. He sought out help to get his passion back, and he’s sharing with us how his mentors helped change his attitude and break him out of that disenchanted rut.  Sometimes, people get stuck in a routine so long that the idea of changing seems preposterous. It can be a challenge to even go looking for a new perspective. We seem to think that dental school is the end of our education, but there’s so much more out there than we ever knew. The world of continuing education is alive and well in dentistry, and Dr. Bill is sharing some advice for newbies - and seasoned dentists - who are looking for a different kind of dental education. The reality for dentists like us is that our careers go far beyond what they’re teaching us in dental school. According to Dr. Bill, today’s dental schools are decades behind where they should be. The slang he uses to describe it is “intellectual inbreeding” and he explains what that means - and how it’s influencing our industry - in this episode. It’s what ultimately inspired him to found LVI, an education institute that acts as a live laboratory for dentists, complete with real patients and patient discussion groups. If you’re interested in learning more about LVI, then this podcast is for you!  In fact, this podcast is for anyone - dentist or not - who’s ever felt the flame of their passion flicker. If you learn anything from Dr. Bill and his slang in today’s episode, it will be how to truly define and measure your success. She started in a small downtown office and worked her way through DSOs and family practices to get to where she is today. She has a good sense of what she likes to do, what she doesn’t like to do, and how it’s all influencing the future she’s building for herself in the dental industry. Amy wants what’s best for all of us practicing dentists. And for her, what’s best means becoming proficient in as many aspects of dental care as we can to give our patients the best care possible. If you couldn’t tell, Amy really loves to learn. Learning as much as she can about dentistry helps her adapt to all the changes coming to the industry. It’s important to be flexible right now, and Amy discusses a few of the ways she is flexible and how the rest of us can stay ahead of the game. The old ways of dentistry are fading. Way back when, dentists were allowed to complain about change and avoid it for as long as possible. That doesn’t work these days. If dentists want to stand out from the crowd, they must show what value they bring to the table. Staying up to date with new dental technology and investing time and energy into learning new techniques, new procedures, and even investing in new tools will show patients you’re a dentist who knows what you’re doing. Amy shares a few of her own learning experiences and discusses the different ways mentors have influenced not only her dental skills but how she runs her business. It’s hard to sum up today’s guest because his reputation precedes him in the best way possible. Dr. Paresh Shah is a dentist who has been working with digital technology for over a decade. He’s often a guest speaker at lectures on digital dentistry and restorative care, and today he’s our guest on The Dental Slang Podcast! But Dr. Paresh isn’t just talking tech today. He may have just gotten a brand new 3D microscope installed in his office, but that’s not the most important thing in there. While tools and technology are an integral part of any dental office, it’s really yourself and your team that make your dental practice worthwhile. If you want to be a successful dentist, it’s going to come down to how you train and empower your working team members. Dr. Paresh calls his staff the “Dream Team” not just because they’re a dream to work with but because he’s learned to leverage the unique strengths and talents of every person on his staff. You don’t need a hygienist that does everything, but you do want someone who is confident in what they do. For Dr. Paresh, building his dream team came down to what he calls “the four food groups of dentistry”. They are biomechanics, TMJ, aesthetics, and periodontal. He goes into more detail about what this means to his practice in today’s episode. The biggest takeaway you’re going to get from this episode is how to create an empowered comprehensive care practice that is built on a foundation of a confident and knowledgeable staff. When you work with a team that you can share challenges with, train together with, and learn new things together, you can build a very beautiful dental practice together. With all the pieces working together like a dream, it’s much easier to bring in all these new tools and technology. After all, that’s what it’s going to take to stay relevant over the next decade of modern dentistry, and you want to have a confident and capable team that can keep up with it.  Building a dream team doesn’t happen overnight. And it doesn’t happen with just one dentist. Finding a mentor to help train and empower your team is the best way to turn this dream team into a reality. It’s rare to find a talented, business savvy practitioner who’s also an advocate for the dental community. Dr. Tony Feck is one of those clinicians, which is why we’re so excited to have him on today’s episode of the Dental Slang Podcast. This mentor and coach founded the Sunrise Dental Solutions community, which is known for bringing dentists together to offer help and support.   We all know dentists have an aversion to change, and Tony says that’s one of the biggest challenges he faces when teaching clinicians. Dentists may spend more money on mentors than any other industry, but we’re still reluctant to make big changes. Whether it’s time or money—or even fear of the unknown—it seems like something always stops us from implementing new technologies and techniques into our practices. To fight this, Tony recommends getting your staff involved in your education. The next time you go to a seminar or meet with your mentor, consider bringing some of your team members along, or at least share what you learned with them when you return to the office. That way, when you lose steam, your team members will be there to help you get back on the right track. Getting everyone on your team excited about the new procedures or tools you’d like to incorporate into your office will keep you motivated, but it also helps to have a coach, mentor or even a consultant to cheer you on as well. What’s the difference? Tony tells us, along with why he thinks a coach is the best option. Coaches offer the guidance and support we need to stay focused. Because dentists, especially practice owners, are independent, we sometimes isolate ourselves from others. A coach who is readily available, knowledgeable, and humble can give you much needed perspective when the going gets tough. If you’re thinking about finding someone to mentor you, Tony suggests looking for a coach who’s been where you want to go and who will encourage you as you make your way down the same path. Dentists do so much more than just tend to people’s teeth. Dr. Milton Davenport calls us “physicians of the mouth.” His experiences at Harvard Dental School taught him the ways medicine and dentistry are similar, as well as how they’re different, and he shares those experiences with us on today’s episode. While at Harvard, Milton studied how autoimmune diseases impact oral health. This influenced the way he looks at the human mouth, but he found his view was difficult to explain to patients, and even other dentists. Fast forward a few years and he can now show his patients what he’s talking about. He calls it “cheating,” but he has technology that allows him to take photos, diagnose, and treat patients all in one place, making the entire process easier. He shares which new tools he has in his office and which technologies he’s most excited about on today’s show. As a reviewer for TheNew.Dentist’s Dental Value Brands, Milton has his fair share of experience with some of the best (and newest) tools in dentistry. Of course, he has his favorites, and he loves being part of a group that means so much to the industry. Beyond that, his unique experiences with dental science, tools, and technology make Milton one of the best mentors when it comes to helping dentists educate their patients. Milton is a proponent of patient-centered care. What he calls “guiding” patients is simply his strategy for talking to them about their treatment options. His experience with Dental Value Brands means he knows the ins and outs of some of the most tech-savvy tools on the market, but his scientific mind and experience running his own practice means he also knows how to read patients and explain treatment options in a way they’ll understand. If you’ve ever had trouble handling a patient’s pointed or confrontational questions, tune in now to hear Milton’s advice. We all know being in the dental chair is scary for some people, and Milton can help you guide your patients into a treatment program that works for both you and them, without stressing anybody out.
