My intent for creating the Let's Talk about Grief podcasts is to begin a dialogue to help you understand the grieving process and how to navigate through it after a death or other significant loss. I discovered that here in the West, when it comes to death, dying or other losses we really don't know…
Send us a textHello, listeners, and welcome to another episode of our grief journey. Today, we will bid farewell to the podcast in this heartfelt episode. Joined by co-host Sherrie Dunlevy, we discuss the emotional journey of letting go, the importance of rituals, and creating meaningful transitions. Anne reflects on memorable moments, gratitude, and support from listeners and guests. The episode concludes with a symbolic funeral for the podcast, celebrating its impact and growth.Letting go of a legacy project wasn't easy. The podcast was to end this year and shouldn't be taken lightly. To do it justice, I enrolled in this helpful class created by Dr. Sarah Kerr and learnt the difference between a good funeral and a bad one. If interested, please see the details here. I used this knowledge to support me in creating a ritual for our final interview. The music used at the beginning is called Shooting the Breeze and was the intro/outro music used since the podcast beganThe link to listen to the poem The Journey written and read by Anne written by Dr. Barry WhitneyThe final music called Summer Positive Jazz began and ended our interviews for the last few years. Here are the words to the song by Rod Stewart I'm SailingI am sailing, I am sailingHome again 'cross the seaI am sailing stormy watersTo be near you, to be free[Verse 2]I am flying, I am flyingLike a bird 'cross the skyI am flying, passing high cloudsTo be with you, to be free[Chorus]Can you hear me, can you hear meThro' the dark night, far awayI am dying, forever cryingTo be with you, who can sayCan you hear me, can you hear meThro' the dark night far awayI am dying, forever cryingTo be with you, who can say[Verse 3]We are sailing, we are sailingHome again 'cross the seaWe are sailing stormy watersTo be near you, to be free[Outro]Oh Lord, to be near you, to be freeOh (My) Lord, to be near you, to be freeOh LordOh Lord, to be near you, to be freeOh (My) Lord, to be near you, to be freeOh LordYou can get Sherrie Dunlevy's book, "How Can I Help?' Send us a Text Message.Hello, listeners, and welcome to another episode of our grief journey. Today, we will discuss with our guest, Dr. Julie Kaplow, how we can better support children and adolescents undergoing grief. You'll learn that children's and youth's grief is unique, and it's through Dr. Kaplow's pioneering work has led to the development of evidence-based interventions such as multidimensional grief therapy, or MGT. Dr. Kaplow is an expert in childhood trauma and bereavement, and she is the executive director of the Trauma and Grief Children's Center in New Orleans.I understand that there's a 300-plus-person waitlist for this bereavement care. Now, that has me thinking: If this is just one state and these are the numbers, can you imagine what those waitlist numbers are worldwide? Here's what we talk about:What is Multidimensional Grief Therapy (MGT), and how does it help children and teens process their emotions after the death of a loved one?Addressing grief in children of different agesBehavioral changes parents should look for that signal their child needs additional emotional supportSome ways parents can model healthy grieving behaviors for their childrenAnd much more! Send us a Text Message.Hello, and welcome to our podcast today. We will delve into the intriguing world of grief recovery and human connection. In today's episodes, we will explore a fictional book called Making Up the Gods, which is our guest Marion Agnew's latest book. I believe it was released later last year.Making Up the Gods is a book about three grieving strangers: a widow, a young boy, and a middle-aged alcoholic. The book is set as a novel in Northern Ontario, and it will be interesting to see how the author has woven into the guest's journey as each navigates their grief. This is the first time we're delving into grief in a fictional way, and it'll be interesting to see how the author has navigated it. The novel examines the past that can keep us from living in the future, which we know only too well for many of those on our own grief journeys, and how it's so easy to get caught up in the past.I'm interested to see how the twists and turns of this unfold as they release their fears and hopefully teach us how we can release our own and move forward. So, I'm delighted to speak to our guest, Marion Agnew, from Northern Ontario. I'm quite envious that she has Lake Superior in her backyard. This is Marion's second book. Her first one was Reverberations, A Daughter's Meditation on Alzheimer's. Here's what we talk about:Marion's original intentions for the novel and how it evolved to focus on grief. The journeys of a widow, a young boy, and a middle-aged alcoholic as they navigate grief and find connection. The writing process and inspirations. How did writing the novel help Marion gain a deeper understanding of her own grief? And much more! Send us a Text Message.Hello, dear listeners. Thank you for joining us today as we continue our grief journey. Today, we're going to be delving into divorce. And it's a subject I don't know if society or we readily acknowledge that the pain and grief experienced when a marriage ends can often be the same sort of emotions as when there's a death of a spouse or a death of a relationship. And it's not readily recognized that divorce is indeed a death. It's a death of the dreams and hopes the couple had. So, yes, there's the intense pain. Because I don't believe society recognizes it as grief, the person going through a divorce doesn't have the same support or comfort that you would get or expect if it were indeed the death of a person. There are no rituals, no comfort, and limited support. The person going through the divorce can feel isolated and alone. It's not as simple as finding a new partner. The desire isn't for somebody new but for the one we had.So, the journey of divorce is both complex and deeply emotional. And it goes far beyond just seeking a replacement. And if there are children involved, it can create custody battles, and it can be traumatic no matter what age the child is.Now, our guest today, I'm certain, remembers only too well the emotional rollercoaster of grief when his marriage ended 45 years ago.Why discuss this now? Well, listeners, please stay with me; you'll understand more soon. Our guest is Vernon Baumrind, a father, grandfather, and successful businessman in Charlotte, North Carolina. He's also the author of a book called Deceit. It's a true story of domestic infidelity and betrayal with details recorded by a wiretap! Here's what we talk about:What lessons can readers glean from "Deceit" about recognizing, confronting, and healing from the wounds inflicted by domestic infidelity and betrayal? The emotional pain experienced during divorce compared to other forms of loss. Some common coping mechanisms people use to manage the emotional pain and grief of divorce. How did the legal proceedings between Vernon and his wife shape their family relationships during and after the divorce? And much more! Send us a Text Message.Welcome, listeners, to another episode, as we continue once more our journey to explore the depths of grief, love, and the human spirit. Today, we'll discuss their journey into the award-winning documentary “Meet Me Where I Am” with our guests. The film explores the many nuances and complexities of grief that individuals grapple with. It may be a little word, but it's mighty powerful when it arrives. The film brings together these nuances and, I believe, normalizes grief. To say I'm beyond thrilled is an understatement to have Grant Garry and John Farley with me today! Here's what we talk about:What inspired the creation of the documentary 'Meet Me Where I Am' and its focus on grief? The symbolism of the train metaphor. In what ways does the documentary address the impact of cultural beliefs on the grieving process? The importance of sharing stories and memories of loved ones to honor their lives and find solace in grief. And much more! Welcome listeners to the Let's Talk About Grief Podcast. Our topic today is slightly different from where we normally go. But it's equally as important. It's about divorce. All too often, the person going through a divorce doesn't recognize the emotional turmoil. Their feeling is that of grief. The relationship is over, but a death hasn't occurred. But indeed, a death has. We just don't speak about it in those terms. It's the death of dreams and hopes of a future with that person that actually dies, that are happy ever after expectations are gone. And our society doesn't help us either! All too often, people will shy away from people grieving a death. So it isn't surprising that there isn't much support given to somebody going through a divorce. I know, going through my own many years ago, it was often suggested that: "I'd be better off without the person" or "just go out; you're young enough. You can find another". Looking back on those comments, it made me feel my marriage was disposable instead of a commitment that we had both once made.I'm absolutely thrilled to have our guest, Velma Gallant, with us today, who's going to be discussing this topic with me. Velma is the divorcee herself who now helps professional women return to joy, using her propriety heart compass method, and is a co-host of a TV show called Heart-repreneur. Here's what we talk about:How divorce can lead to a path of self-discovery.Divorce can be more emotionally challenging than death. What is the Heart Compass Method?Society often fails to acknowledge divorce as a form of grief, which can lead to individuals feeling isolated in their emotional struggles! What are some common emotions experienced by individuals going through a divorce? And much more! On the show today, we're going to be discussing a rather contentious, difficult topic, but it is one that Canada adopted. We're going to be talking today about assisted suicide – and that's when a person chooses their exit. How does the person's decision affect their family? And how does their family cope with moving through the grief? These are just a few of the questions that we'll be discussing with our guest today. We have Collin Kingsmill with us, and he's willing to share his experience. Collin was a successful banker in Switzerland, where he lived with his family. And he's since moved, leaving everything behind. He now resides on Canada's east coast. He also is a successful transformational coach. And we'll also be hearing how he made that switch! Here's what we talk about:Understanding that suicide isn't an easy topic to discuss.Collin's mom having an exit plan prepared. She didn't want to be a burden on anybody. And wanted to leave in a dignified fashion on her terms. Today we're going to be talking about unresolved grief. Grief can be sneaky, and it often shows up when we least expect it. That's why it's important to know the events behind the grief to understand its nature. But we experience grief in many different forms throughout our lives. Unfortunately, we don't always recognize or have the language to understand or communicate these emotions. It's not uncommon for a few unfortunate events to snowball into something much more serious, like illness or depression. And this is why it's so important to recognize that grief can come in many different forms and offer support to those who may be experiencing it, even if it isn't death related.I am excited to introduce you to Judy Lipson, who herself has survived the loss of two sisters, and has lived with unprocessed emotions for 30 years. In 2011, Judy founded Celebration of Sisters, an annual ice-skating fundraiser to commemorate the lives of her two sisters, Jane and Margie. Julie is an author of several published articles, a keynote speaker for the Bereaved Parents USA Conference in 2023, and she's also authored a book called Celebration of Sisters: It Is Never Too Late To Grieve. Here's what (and who) we talk about:The unique grief of dealing with the loss of two siblings. Grief accumulates through time if not appropriately addressed! How Judy's grief affected how she celebrated her birthdays. The value of memories to one's journey of healing. In this episode, we feel the kind of grief at the death of beloved family members, especially those of our parents and the matriarchs of our family. Our parents teach us about love and how to survive in the world, but it's our grandparents that teach us about unconditional love. Today, our guest, Noémi Beres will share her experience with her two losses, the death of her dad and that of her grandmother, and how she's used art to cope with her grief. Here's what (and who) we talk about:Noémi juggling her emotions in between two deaths in the same year. “Focusing on the job” until it's over, then the grief starts to hit.
