Send us a textHello, listeners, and welcome to another episode of our grief journey. Today, we will bid farewell to the podcast in this heartfelt episode. Joined by co-host Sherrie Dunlevy, we discuss the emotional journey of letting go, the importance of rituals, and creating meaningful transitions. Anne reflects on memorable moments, gratitude, and support from listeners and guests. The episode concludes with a symbolic funeral for the podcast, celebrating its impact and growth.Letting go of a legacy project wasn't easy. The podcast was to end this year and shouldn't be taken lightly. Sarah Kerr joins BLBD again this week, as we share exciting news about a new course we've been developing at the Centre for Sacred Deathcare. Launching in 2025, the Sacred Deathcare Guide Training and Certification is designed as a modern “Mystery School for Deathwalkers.” Participants will learn to cooperate with the deep archetypal patterns that shape the process of death and trust their intuitive intelligence as they guide others. They will be equipped to explain the energetic and spiritual dimensions of death and loss as we explore healing not only for the living, but also for the dying and the dead. As one person said about Sarah's classes: “It's like a path that's been lit up on the runway. It's why I'm here, it's why I was always here. This week's conversation with Sarah Kerr invites you to broaden your perspective on death, shifting toward a soul-centered understanding. We talk about the role of archetypes: what are they, and why do they matter? In particular, we delve into the Archetype of the Deathwalker. As Sarah notes, “We are creatures of narrative. Everything in our world makes sense to us because we tell ourselves a story about it.” This leads us to consider the dominant cultural narrative around death, and how that story shapes our experiences. Could a new/old healing story emerge – one rooted in the journey of the soul – that would better serve the dead, the dying, and the living? instagram.com/sacreddeathcare

Melinda Norris, born and raised in the 70's in Melbourne (Narrn) suburbia, had a far from a typical suburban upbringing. Both her parents, who were immigrants to Australia, kept their family traditions, such as homesteading and growing their food;  we now know these practices as permaculture. One very important tradition that held strong to in the family was caring at home for the young, and the old, and the dying.   Having lived with the dying and attended as many funerals as christenings and weddings, Melinda has been attuned to this part of life for as long as she can remember.   And having had a number of near death experiences herself, Melinda has a familiarity and reverence for the terrain and the journey that we all must take someday. With a curious nature, she was destined for adventure and has lived a full life, exploring, creating, and travelling. Professionally, Melinda is best known as a Festival and Event Producer, Arts Worker, and, more recently, a Tiny House Builder. Today, she's here to discuss a deeply personal topic that resonates with many—our relationship with death and dying. She is a death Doula, a term that means helper, who facilitates, guides, and emotionally supports families. Melinda is a bridge to allay fears, communicate expectations, and gently guide individuals towards grace and peace during the dying journey. Through stories and wisdom from her ongoing reverence for this profound subject, Melinda offers a unique perspective on a conversation increasingly present in the global collective. Now is the time to turn off the engine and set down exhaustion into lakes that remain and bask foraninfiniteinstant. Now is the timeto bea miracletoo. Cosmology: It's a Heck of a WordIt is! It's up there with ontology and epistemology, the kind of word that opens us up to broad ways of thinking. It's an account or theory of the origin of the universe. Along with that view of its origin, cosmology implies principles and beings who govern our universe. In story terms, we can say that the cosmology of a story is the largest conceptual framework, in which are nested the smaller frameworks. It's the largest explanation, the largest context, like the shell of the story egg. Or perhaps a better analogy is that cosmology is the bedrock which influences the chemistry of all the layers of soil, up to and including the topsoil. You see, cosmology speaks of the background of the story, but it also infuses each part of the story. It gives the big why's and who's and how's of the story world, in which all smaller stories must take place. We live in stories. In popular scientific cosmology, we have the Big Bang and the theory of evolution. For those who live in that view, their daily lives are nested within that bigger picture. Most other cosmologies are more personal, in the sense that there are beings who were and are involved in creation. That could be gods, the spirits of planets, animals, creators who create with clay, and more. There is a great variety. For those who are within those cosmologies, their daily lives are nested within this larger context. Cosmology in HinduismHindusim is varied to say the least, but there are trends. The branch of Hinduism that I studied and practiced was Bhakti-yoga, or Gaudiya Vaisnavism. It holds a personal cosmology, with all creation originating from a divine being, or rather, two divine beings, masculine and feminine. After the initial creation, those divine beings had a hand in subsequent sub-creations. The big creation is where Divinity arranged the soup of matter into planets and stars. In the sub-creations, planets are populated with beings, and in further sub-creations, there are more beings, all within a universal governance with strata of gods, all the way to the top. There are variations of this cosmology, within India and the larger area around her. It is as though the conceptual egg is multidimensional, existing in various ways for different people, yet with a common essential form. I'm afraid that's the best metaphor I can think of now. I'm open to suggestions! What are the variants? Some speak of Vishnu as the supreme originating deity. Others speak of Shiva, or Shakti. Some forego personal origins and say that the universe came from a void, or from an all-pervasive energy. Early Buddhism entered the scene with a teaching of interdependent causality, which you might roughly say means, everything causes everything (though there are greater concentrations of causality).Jostling CosmologiesIf each of these cosmologies were a person, they'd often be bickering, and in fact the world is full of jostling cosmologies. If you hear two people making different claims about whether life came from matter or spirit, whether there was a big bang, whether creatures evolved from the ocean or were created in some other way, or perhaps both—you're witnessing jostling cosmologies. However, within a given story, we tend to find a single cosmology, a single world-view about the origin of things. From there comes the ontology of that world: what the story allows to be true. (Thanks to Sarah Kerr for that framing). In a given story, the cosmology may be spelled out or implied. It may be assumed to be the same as dominant modern world-views. In any case, there's always a cosmology. Let's use Lord of the Rings for an example, because the cosmology is spelled out clearly, at least if you get into the Silmarillion. Here it is: in the beginning there was one singer; from that singer came many singers. With their combined voices they created celestial harmonies. Then, one of those singers began to sing in disharmony; kicking off the troubles of creation, much as Lucifer did when he rebelled against the Judeo-Christian god. From there come Elves, Men, Dwarves, Hobbits. And in a particular place called the Shire, in Bag End, there's Bilbo!Cosmology is the biggest layer. Within that we have nested layers, and within all of that we have the actions of our characters, or, in our lives, ourselves. Worlds Within WorldsWithin the cosmology of a story, nested inside, lie other layers of explanation. We've been talking about big picture cosmology—the origin of the universe and such—but thought of any scale has its own cosmology. It's in pop culture. Every Spiderman comic doesn't go into the bigger picture in the Marvel universe, but it's there. Spiderman might be fighting a street thug, but Galactus is out there, him and other godlike beings who are part of the story's backdrop. Let's look at the Christian cosmology. In the beginning, there was God, who created the worlds, waters, and the rest of the support for life. He then created humankind and put them in the Garden of Eden. Aye, there's the rub. They disobeyed him, got kicked out of the garden, and we've had trouble ever since. Here's one version of scientific cosmology. There was nothing, then there was a big bang, which created a universe with lots of empty space, and some plasma: superheated matter. This plasma coalesced into stars, which brought light to the universe, which had been dark until then. When these stars grow old they implode then explode, spreading complex matter throughout the universe. This becomes planets, asteroids, you, me; within at least one of these planets, ours, this matter gave rise to the first stage of life; it's become more complex over time.Cosmology and ColonisationCosmologies are often used to justify conquest. For example, the theory of evolution was used to place Europeans at the top of an evolutionary hierarchy, a ladder from simple celled organisms to animals, then to ‘primitive people,' and finally to ‘civilized people.' The cosmology of modern capitalism borrows from the theory of evolution, emphasizing survival of the fittest over cooperation for the good of all. Religious world-views have also been used to justify conquest, usually with a justification that goes something like, ‘We are God's chosen people.'It should be said that categories like ‘religious' and ‘scientific' are so broad that they are useful only to an extent. Within scientific or religious groups, there are a many variations. These groups are patterns that make many people into large units, but there are overlaps between those units, and within each are individual people with diverse world-views. This is a public episode.  In this episode of The Mama Psychedelia Podcast, I talk with Jamie Satori, together we dive deep into the realms of Quantum Birth keeping, birth being the blueprint of all things, and birth as transformation. Jamie came to Doula work after her own traumatic birth 13 years ago, which later led to 3 redemptive empowered births, the 4th being a self directed birth here in Costa Rica. Her first birth ushered her onto this path of midwifery and mama hood. Moving to Costa Rica supported her in healing from the rat race of the West and her own history of addiction and substance reliance. We together share how we first connected and our early journey of working alongside each other. We touch on how the brainwaves of a birthing being move through them, oxytocin and ecstasy, and the altered state that is birth and death (death being the cervix to the next universe.) We also explore how birth is inherently a spiritual act of essence coming into physicality and Jamie's own childhood connection to the sacred and how children are highly tapped into the intuitive realms and magic. We talk about supporting the rite of passage for the non-birthing parent and how important their role is on the journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum of a new life, and how as birth workers we can support sovereign family led birth and follow the family's lead and to trust their inner knowing.   Jamie is a mama to four and community midwife serving in Costa Rica's southern zone. Borderless Birth is her beloved brain baby and the container that holds her soul work. She is in her eighth year serving at the gateways of birth and death, and passions include the movement towards re-humanization and reclamation of being born, birthing and dying. Following the Quantum Midwifery way (as taught by Whapio of the Matrona), Jamie believes and teaches peak human experiences as altered states of consciousness deserving of ceremony and respect.Where you can find Jamie Satori :  Website: www.borderlessbirth.comIG: @borderlessbirthResources: -Melinda Smyth https://www.alignable.com/jacksonville-fl/ceo-cake-with-melynda-smith-Sarah Kerr https://sacreddeathcare.com/about/-https://birthbreathanddeath.com/Your Host Mackenzie's offerings: https://snipfeed.co/hunnywombIG: @mamapsychedelia@hunnywombdoula   Intro Music "Waters of the Earth" by Satori covered by me, Mackenzie.(For more of her music, check out her Spotify)

I'm so excited to be welcoming Dr. Sarah Kerr on The Becoming Podcast this month.  Sarah is a death doula, ritual healing practitioner, and trainer, and in her work, she helps dying people and their families connect with each other, and with the innate wisdom of the dying process. Sarah's work draws on ancient wisdom teachings, nature-based spirituality, sacred sciences, and the richness of the human soul. She designs and facilitates ceremonies that help her clients and their families to integrate experiences of illness, death and loss. These rituals honour the spiritual significance of what is happening, and bring healing to the living, the dying, and the dead. I came across Sarah and her work several years ago when my curiosity was sparked about how I could better support women through grief, as well as understanding my own relationship with death and grieving.  I've since taken all four of Sarah's classes on Ritual Skills for Living and Dying, and appreciate her as a gifted teacher and wise guide to those of us who are working to reclaim ritual and rites of passage, and contemplate grief and loss. In our conversation, Sarah and I talk about the alchemy of ritual as "energy medicine for the collective body" and how we need ritual to help our souls catch up when massive change has occurred to our physical reality, or when our souls have traversed a radical transformation but our physical reality hasn't caught up yet.  She shares that ritual can be simple and still powerful, and doesn't have to involve all the "bells and smells" that we often associate with ritual.  We talk about rites of passage, and the difference between "change" and transformation - as in the difference between getting older and becoming elder, or having a baby and becoming a mother.  We dive into a deeper conversation around grief and how we are often denied - or deny ourselves - the opportunity to fully grieve our losses.  Finally, Sarah shares what she's learned about life from supporting people through death. I loved every minute of this conversation, and soaked up every piece of Sarah's wisdom - and I know you will too.

Disruptive energy is woven into the fabric of our lives. It alerts us that we’re being called away from life as we know it in order to discover something new about ourselves and about this experience of human-ing.Most of us avoid, resist and try to control change, and in doing so we miss the deeper and truer aspect of self that is trying to emerge. Choosing to ride the waves of the unexpected with genuine curiosity, and trusting change is an ally not an enemy, takes on an adventure of our own becoming.Today’s show is Part 1 of a story of choosing change, and a framework that served as a steady handrail and guide and a powerful torch to light the dark passages of doubt and hesitation. The Map of the Archetypal Cycles of Initiation is a brilliant structure created by Sarah Kerr, PhD. It’s designed to support you in navigating the chaos of change, and serves as a guide out of the comfort zone and toward your authentic self. The power of ritual is profound. It’s woven deep into the rhythms of societies, and its power lies in the marking of a transition, from one state to another. It often means a death of some sort: something needs to pass, before something new can arrive. But few of us are comfortable with death, literal or metaphoric. My guest today is Sarah Kerr,a ritual healing practitioner and death doula whose work supports the living, the dying, and the dead. She facilitates private and public healing rituals, and regularly presents on topics of death midwifery and holistic death care. Sarah has a PhD in Transformative Learning, and a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies. Her doctoral research explored the ways that modern western people can restore and re-create meaningful rituals for the significant transitions of life, and she has been a student of spiritual and shamanic healing modalities since 2000. In our conversation we unpack what a ritual is; explore how we loosen our fixation on the physical and the outer and the visible and the tangible; how grief and grieving differ; and how to understand our life as a spiral rather than a relentless trajectory. The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life

Sarah Kerr, PhD, is a death doula and ritual healing practitioner. I've connected with Sarah and her work a number of times and was keen to follow up with her regarding a lecture she gave on the Shamanic Archetype, (part of a series, and just one of many resources she offers on contemporary archetypal shamanism). In this conversation, I ask Sarah to explain the difference between The Priest/ess, The Shaman, and The Psychopomp as archetypes. (We also toss The Mystic in there for good measure). We consider the implications of being white women doing work that is often called "shamanic", and share our different perspectives and comfort levels around that. (It's a site of struggle for each of us in our own way). I also dig a little into a section of Sarah's dissertation, Dreams, Ritual and the Creation of Sacred Objects: An Inquiry Into A Contemporary Western Shamanic Initiation. It's a worthwhile read and this part of our dialogue will appeal to those who've long walked between the worlds but didn't know what to do about it, or have had spontaneous initiation experiences and few places to turn for support. We talk specifically about how the Shamanic Archetype is often scapegoated by society, and how one way to heal through the Journey of the Walkaway is to choose to Return as Teacher/Interpreter. Finally, Sarah shares a bit about her own initiation ritual and some personal parts that felt powerful for her. Some good ideas in there for those of us who adore that sort of thing. If you're in the Calgary area and you'd like to work with Sarah more closely on an on-going basis, you might want to check out the Calgary Community Healers' Council.
