The Momxiety Club is a podcast for new moms-whether it’s your first or fourth. We discuss real life as a mom - our triumphs, missteps, struggles, insecurities, relationships, and most importantly our worries and anxieties. We believe postpartum isn’t discussed enough and we have created this space for YOU! Get ready to listen and share openly about all things motherhood. Anxiety is such a big part of so many of our lives and we want you to know you are not alone. We are in this club together! Listen while you’re driving the kids so they nap, commuting to work, doing the never ending housework, walking/working out, showering, or anytime you need a mental mommy minute to regroup and keep being the awesome mom you are! This isn’t your average mommy advice show. We are your self-deprecating, unfiltered, and overly anxious support group. Lean on and listen in anytime you need a reminder that you are not alone.
Hearts are all over the place and LOVE is the topic many are talking about this month. While I LOVE RuPaul's quote "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?" it really rings true as a mom. Some of our self-care and self-love that we did before having kids is NOT the same as what we can do after having kids. So, let's talk about realistic self-care because it's time to show Mom some Love this February. Listen and get four easy ways you can care for yourself that don't require hours of planning and coordinating and finding a sitter.Remember to subscribe to the podcast and share it with your mom friends.Looking for more support or help to implement these tips? It's the end of 2021, COVID cases are back on the upswing and many are still trying to navigate seeing family while keeping unvaccinated kids safe. As we are preparing to see some family that we haven't seen in two years and while trying to keep our kids as safe as possible (7 yo is half-vaccinated kid with a chronic illness and 2 yo isn't old enough) I began thinking about risk tolerance and risk avoidance.Listen in and hear my conclusions and recommendations for continuing to navigate this time.If you find yourself in a similar place and need someone to talk to, the Momxiety Club is that place for so many moms just like you. Listen in on this episode where I talk about how I've been handling life as I am thrown little curveballs over and over again. When mama duty calls in the form of sleeping in a toddler bed with a sick kiddo, keeping kids home from school, losing the only babysitter you trust during a pandemic, researching potential chickenpox, all plans go right out the window. On top of all the stresses that come with sick kids, comes the added bonus of the house being a complete disaster! Some people can handle living in a messy house, others find that it just adds to their anxiety. In this episode, I mention an article about burnout in parents with sick kids during the past two years. = The strain of parents taking on sick kids while working from home or taking time off of work to care for their kiddos is so challenging for all of us.When you know self-care is the answer, but also know it's impossible, that just adds another layer on top of this already stressful time. Selfcare is seemingly impossible when we can't do anything for ourselves because we are taking care of sick kids, business, work, the house, etc.If you find yourself in a similar place and need someone to talk to, the Momxiety Club is that place for so many moms just like you. This is a place to talk about ALL the things including how anxiety can show up in the form of anger. Some people can deal with it and for some people, it sends us in a downward spiral. What do unplanned haircuts, Aquaphor, an at-home COVID test, and throw up on a Paw Patrol Puzzle have to do with each other? These are all topics we talk about in this episode which sounds a lot like what a Momxiety Club support session! My Virtual Assistant (VA), Michelle Ducie, and I chat about motherhood overwhelm that includes Vaseline on the carpet, children cutting their own hair, and stick around until the end to hear my story of an at-home COVID test turned vomit on my son's Hanukkah gift. Now granted these are surface problems, but when you have Momxiety and you are feeling so overwhelmed with daily life, it is helpful to air your troubles to a mom that gets it and that's exactly what we did with this episode and exactly what we do in the Momxiety Club support sessions. Don't forget to check out @momxietyclub on Instagram and comment on our Thursday December 2nd post with an emoji that explains something that has gone awry in your home lately. i.e. ✂️,
“Today I want you to think about all that you are instead of all that you are not.” This was a recent post on the Momxiety Club Instagram and I wanted to talk a little more about it here on the podcast. This is a tough one at times and I am more often than not (READ - like always) thinking about what I am not…not, what I am. I would tell my kids, ”You're so strong…Oh wow you kept trying!” but think to myself, “You're so weak and out of shape. You just give up and are a failure.”Shouldn't we be modeling how to talk to ourselves in a positive manner? Isn't this what we want to teach our kids? Shouldn't we continue talking to our kids like this beyond infancy and the early school years? What made us stop talking to ourselves in a positive manner?I've been thinking more and more about how my mind seems to think in “all or nothing” ways and working on more positive self-talk…even if it's only one little thing a day that breaks through the negativity.Listen in and let me know what you think about how anxiety affects your self-talk and your “all or nothing” view or attitude.A few other topics and keywords discussed:-Neurodiversity-Family Command Center-Visual Schedule-Executive Functioning-PerfectionismIf you are looking for support and a community of other moms that will help remind you about all the great things you are then the Momxiety Club Membership is perfect for you.FYI - In 2022 the Sneeze Proof Your Pelvic Floor Course price is increasing! Are you worried that your child's pediatrician office is going to label you an "anxious mom"? Or that they will dismiss your concerns because you're "just an anxious new mom"? In previous episodes, I have shared that I was always concerned about this! I still go back and forth in my head if I have to call the pediatrician to ask a question, thinking "they are gonna think I'm nuts for calling about this...or they are going to think I'm nuts because I should have called immediately after a bump or bruise, etc."Well, listen in on my interview with the PediPals, Dr. Ana and Dr. Sami because you'll hear how these pediatricians reassure us that they are here to help and not judge! These wonderful pediatricians have taken to social media and host their own podcast to help give parents trusted information…and take the anxiety out of parenting. In 2019, Drs. Ana and Sami launched their new company the PediPals after meeting during residency. With PediPals, they aim to educate parents about common pediatric questions, ailments and recommendations, and discuss the issues that require attention but may not be able to be addressed at routine pediatric checkups. To hear a bit of the continuation on this episode here is a link to my interview on the The Well Child Podcast. This episode was recorded in April 2021 but is being released now in November 2021. There are two reasons I am sharing this...even though it was recorded months ago. This was recorded when I was having an anxiety attack. My chest was tight, I was worried and overwhelmed. It's important to share the reality of what an anxiety attack can "look and feel" like. Not everyone experiences anxiety the same way and one individuals anxiety attacks are not all the same. This is also relevant because it was recorded at the time that many adults were able to be vaccinated in the US and, for many, the world was opening up again, but I was still feeling trapped and nervous since both my children are under 12. Now that kids 5-11 are able to be vaccinated, this is still relevant for many, like me, who have kids under 5. My oldest is immunocompromised but was able to get his first shot yesterday, but my youngest is 2...so we are still in this in-between more comfortable but not 100% comfortable stage.I found this new re-entry and re-opening anxiety in April 2021 and what is sure to come in the next few months again to be very similar to the momxiety of having a newborn at home and leaving the house for the first several months postpartum. I always say little things make a big difference. Today I'm sharing how two little emails on a Saturday night sent my mind down an all too familiar panicky spiral and how I was able to use the old adage, "Prepare for the worst, hope for the best" to bring my mind back from the downward spiral.Referenced in the episode:Choiceology with Katy MilkmanThe Momxiety Club MembershipFollow Along on Social Media:IG: @momxietyclubLooking for support?Join the Momxiety ClubGet the Sneeze Proof Your Pelvic Floor Course for ONLY $27. Child Life staff assist children and their families in coping with an illness, injury, or procedure. The fund also enables staff to have activities and toys on hand for children. And as I mentioned in the last few episodes and Carly mentioned today, CHOP is a leader in the research and treatment of FPIES and VEO-IBD.You get access to an amazing group and movement to help reduce momxiety and charity benefits…a win-win in my book! After having my second child I didn’t recognize my postpartum anxiety because it was completely different than the worries I had with my first. I even remember telling my general practitioner that my anxiety was way less than the first time (boy was I wrong)!I didn’t realize or acknowledge that postpartum anxiety could be manifesting itself in feelings of failure, lack of feeling connected to the baby, feelings of anger and rage, and feeling like my family would be better off without me because I was just adding to the people my husband had to take care of.I felt like if I was spending time with the baby, I was being a terrible mom to my older son and vice versa. I felt like being a good parent to one child meant I was being a bad parent to the other. I would get scared because I thought to myself (many many times) that we never should have had a second child because I was incapable of being a good mom to either of them now. Listen and hear more about my second pregnancy experience, postpartum anxiety, treatment, and a wrap up of the past three shows where general anxiety, postpartum anxiety, and parenting a child with a chronic illness are all discussed. Despite what I had been told during previous calls and visits to his pediatricians' office, blood and clots in a 2-year-old’s stool is not just toddler constipation and NOT normal. Listen as I share the story of how my then-two-year-old was diagnosed with Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I’ll share how helpful trusting your mother’s intuition or ‘gut’ can be, how isolated and jealous I felt of moms with “normal” healthy kids, and how chatting with a mom in the gymnastics waiting room lifted a huge weight off my back. You’ll hear more about: Timeline for the beginning of the diagnosis process for Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel DiseaseCT Scan, Labs, and Stool Samples, and EGDsCould it be Celiac’s Disease, Meckel’s Diverticulitis, or something else?Similarities between new motherhood and my experience mothering a child with a chronic illnessFeelings of Gratitude, Fear, Guilt, Anger, Jealousy, Questioning, Sadness, Grief, AnxietyWhy movement is so central to the Momxiety Club no matter if your baby is brand new or was brand new a decade ago.Referenced in this episode: FREE Resource - Ways to Reduce Momxiety 'Hard is Hard’ TEDx Boulder Talk by Ash BeckhamThe Joy of Movement by Kelly McGonigalVideo - A year after diagnosisBlog Post from the day after diagnosis - Let’s Talk About Life…I love hearing from YOU! I was “first time mom anxious” after my first was born. The first few weeks I would burst into tears randomly, especially anytime I would think about being left alone with Reuben. We had an extremely difficult time with breastfeeding, I felt like a FAILURE, and felt like there was no way I would be able to feed him alone. Miraculously after tongue and lip tie revisions, multiple lactations consultant visits, nipple shields, syringe feeding, bottle feeding, breastmilk and spit up everywhere, pumping, use of a SNS feeder and what seemed like we needed 8 hands to do - Reuben latched on his own at 3 weeks old and I felt empowered but still needed support...Listen to the episode to hear more about:Generalized Anxiety DisorderHow dancing until college kept Tori's anxiety at bay...and she didn't realize it until a decade after she stopped!Anxiety as a first time momBreastfeeding challengesHow Tori incorporated movement back into her life with an infant and how that not only helped her but many other momsFood allergies and intolerancesHow many times Tori took her son to the doctor to be told nothing was wrongTimeline for the beginning of the diagnosis process for Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel DiseaseReferenced in this episode:FREE Resource - Ways to Reduce MomxietyFREE Resource - How to Help a New Mom From a DistanceMomxiety Club Episode 3 - When the village is taken away: How to help a new mom from a distance'Hard is Hard’ TEDx Boulder Talk by Ash BeckhamI love hearing from YOU! Meet Rabbi Ariana Capptauber who within the span of a few months, became ordained, moved to a new state, started a new job, and gave birth to her first child. Hear how mindfulness, meditation, spirituality, accepting things as they are, and forgiveness have helped her during this momentous time of her life. Her Rosh Hashanah sermon about forgiveness is what prompted me to ask her to be a guest. And I thought there was no better time than the end of the year, when many reflect on the past year and make plans and resolutions for the New Year, to share this interview.Do you have goals or resolutions for the coming year? There is SOOOOOOOOOO much going on right now to make momxiety go through the roof! Today I’m sharing some of my own, as well as other mom’s ideas, for self-care that can be done during a pandemic. We have all had our schedules thrown off since March and when we feel like we start getting into a routine, that routine gets shifted, by work/lack of work, in-person/virtual/hybrid/canceled school, and where and how often we can leave our house.A few great ways to reduce the stress and anxiety that have come from 24/7 with our families include... Get the FULL list and free download at Join.momxietyclub.com-Set an intention or goal for the day (individually AND as a family).-Stick to some sort of routine for yourself.-Put on your favorite music and jam out (sing and dance with your kids)-Get outside - Take a walk by yourself or request a quiet walk observing nature with your kids-Jump in the member area of the Momxiety Club and take an exercise class (there are a variety of different replay options depending on your stage of motherhood and if you are going to have a little helper or if you are on your own)-Schedule a VENT Session-Write it all out AND then throw it out-Do something with your hands (color, cross-stitch, cook, bake, organize)-Sit in your car or outside alone-Organize and donate what you don’t need anymore-Cry*Remember self-care doesn't need to be going to the spa. Know that we ARE living in an unprecedented time right now! This has been said by many, but I don’t think it can be said enough.Let's Connect: hello@momxietyclub.com Momxiety Club Website Momxiety Club Facebook Page Momxiety Club Instagram Access ALL the FREE resources from Momxiety Club™ and Mommy Barre®Share what you’ve done for yourself OR share what you identified with from this episode by tagging @momxietyclub and using the #realisticselfcare. Meet Allyson Cutaiar, EMT, first-time mom of a 18-month-old little girl named Lexi, hyperemesis warrior, and lover of books and chocolate. She shares her experience as a first-time mom with anxiety on top of her experiences parenting a baby diagnosed with failure to thrive, food allergies, and the process that led to her daughter’s diagnosis. Learn how Allyson's mother's intuition, support from fellow moms, and advocacy for her child saved her sanity and led her daughter to treatment that has allowed her to thrive. In this interview, we talk a lot about medical appointments and conditions and experiences we had with our own children with food allergies and intolerances. We discuss our children and the conversations we had with their doctors. Please remember that each case and each child is unique and nothing we speak about in this podcast should be taken as medical advice to treat, cure, or diagnose any possible disease or condition. If you have concerns about your child’s health you should call and speak with your pediatrician immediately. Remember this podcast is a place for moms to vent and discuss our shared experiences to let other moms know they are not alone. I hope you enjoy and if you have concerns about your child’s health that this gives you the confidence to reach out to your child’s doctor without fear of being labeled that crazy mom who calls about every bump and bruise, every rash, and every different diaper. Mom-guilt was discussed in episode 4, but I didn't dive into the difference between mom-guilt and mom-shame. More often we are calling our feelings of shame, mom-guilt, in order to generalize the difficulty of motherhood. This, along with picture perfect images of motherhood in the media and online, often causes moms, especially isolated new moms, to feel worse, like they are not good enough and never can be. Are you Mom-shaming yourself? Listen to hear my story of anxiety manifesting in feelings of failure, lack of connection, anger, and rage which I didn't realize wasn't just normal mom-guilt, but actually shame. Learn how to identify feelings of shame and work through them. Listen to ideas on how to catch yourself before you head into a downward spiral of negativity.
