Having made 109 appearances for them, with loan deals at Bury and Wigan Athletic along the way, he was released on a free transfer to Stockport County for the beginning of the 1998–99 season, and quickly arrived at Burnley in January 1999, signed by the colourful manager Stan Ternent, following a falling-out with then Stockport manager, Gary Megson. Once described by Ternent as a Premiership-standard player, his inability to hold down a regular position either as a left-winger, left-sided or central defender, or striker, saw him never play there. He played more than 200 games for the club. His unpopularity with some supporters was balanced with him becoming something of a cult figure, earning him regular chants of "Graham di Branchio," (in reference to the football chant given to Italian footballer Paolo Di Canio), in an effort to boost his confidence and let his more prominent abilities such as pace and height come to the fore.
On the podcast this week, Fr Alex Frost — parish priest, best-selling author, and host of The God Cast — talks to Madeleine Davies about the Church of England's problems connecting with people from working-class settings. Fr Alex has written a comment article in this week's Church Times which argues that the C of E needs to remove barriers that make it harder for working-class people to respond to a call to ordination or lay leadership. “I heard examples of intelligent and highly capable individuals from urban working-class settings who had struggled to break through the pomp and procedures of the Church of England,” he writes. “And of individuals dismayed by the Church and its approach to training and developing leaders who happened to drink Vimto more than they did Vin Mariani. . . “I could relate to this. In my own journey to ordination, I had many advocates; but, for every advocate I had, there were dreadfully high hurdles put in front of me to demonstrate whether I might be worthy of fulfilling my authentic and genuine call to ordination.” The Revd Alex Frost is the Vicar of St Matthew the Apostle, Burnley, a member of the General Synod, and host of the podcast The God Cast: https://www.youtube.com/@thegodcast5878 His book, Our Daily Bread: From Argos to the altar — a priest's story is published by Harper North (Books, 11 November 2022). ORDER ALEX'S BOOK HERE https://www.whsmith.co.uk/products/ou... ABOUT ALEX Stand-up-comedian turned priest's tale of generosity and compassion to HarperNorth HarperCollins today announce the acquisition of Our Daily Bread: From Argos to the Altar – a Priest's Story by Father Alex Frost. Jonathan de Peyer, senior commissioning editor, acquired World All Languages rights from Jane Graham-Maw of Graham Maw Christie for HarperNorth. The book will publish in hardback, ebook and audio in October 2022, with a foreword from fellow son of Burnley Alastair Campbell. Our Daily Bread is a warmly funny, intensely moving and personal account of the lives of an urban parish priest and his parishioners. De Peyer said: ‘Father Alex has written a wonderful book that reminds us of the bonds that can be forged between people in adversity. Unpretentious, faithful to the stories of those whose lives Alex has touched, funny, and above all timely, Our Daily Bread is a salve in this time of acute crisis.' Father Alex Frost found his calling while running an Argos store in his native Burnley, moonlighting as a stand-up comedian. Once he became a priest, he quickly realised his 17,000 parishioners were in dire need of help. And so it was that during Covid he found himself running a food bank from a car park, helping the desperate amid his flock as the pandemic raged. Fr Alex's down-to-earth style of ministry has struck a chord with people of all faiths, cultures and class, and amid the tragedy, addiction, illness and neglect, there also lies hope, joy and comedy. Our Daily Bread is about the lives of the characters that cross the threshold of any church. Through them it shows the continued service of the church for the poor and the marginalised. Frost said: ‘It's such an honour to give a voice to some incredible people living through these tough times. It's my wish that the book is read by anyone concerned with the effects of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis upon Britain's poorest, and I truly hope it helps change things for the better. HarperNorth feels like a natural home with its mission to bring books from the North to the world.'The God Cast with Fr Alex Frost

How did a former stand-up comedian, referee and Argos manager become the vicar of St Matthew's the Apostle, Burnley? In this in-depth interview Fr Alex Frost speaks to Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes about his call to ordained ministry, the challenges of working in an area where poverty and addiction are commonplace, why he struggles to read his own book and his passion for inclusion within the Church of England. Fr Alex featured in a BBC documentary entitled 'The cost of Covid' which shone a spotlight on deprivation in the town. But today, Fr Alex says "no one cares" and is angry that despite widespread media coverage of the serious challenges facing Burnley, many politicians continue to appear disinterested. What's the answer to the problems he's witnessing? "You'd perhaps not be surprised to hear a Christian minister say this, but...the Gospel of Jesus Christ" he says. Fr Alex Frost is the author of Our Daily Bread (Harper Collins) which is published on 27 October. The Profile is sponsored by Premier Christianity magazine. Environmental considerations are rightly gaining increased prominence and awareness. Environmental experts agree that unprecedented changes in climate and biodiversity are taking place, threatening nature and human livelihoods around the world. The humanitarian community increasingly understands the need to identify and assess how their operations affect the natural environment and to mitigate the negative environmental impacts wherever possible. The mine action sector is no exception. In this blog post, and as part of the ICRC series on war, law and the environment, Alex Frost from Mine Action Review outlines the environmental impacts of explosive ordnance contamination and the impacts of survey and clearance of that ordnance, elements of regulatory frameworks and treaty commitments, and key mitigation measures for the sector.
Over the years, I've been told I have a story to tell. A few conversations have occurred about potential with publishers, and agents but those who know me well, will know my struggles with writing and self confidence. However some people have inspired me to have a go and so, as with 'The God Cast, I am doing it my way to prevent disappointment and set backs. So I have written the first chapter of my autobiography which is available on my God Cast pages. It is also available as an audio podcast. If it is well received I will write the second chapter and if not, well..... So if it is of interest, please listen, and please leave feedback. The book should it ever be published is entitled, '36 Consecutive Wednesday's' and the story behind that will only be revealed in Chapter 2. Thanks, Alex
