Joy - a few definitions include: a source or cause of delight and a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. When was the last time you experienced joy? I recently thought about what brings me joy now at this age and stage in my life. Sometimes it is as simple as sitting in a park near a lake. Or going to my monthly crochet group learning a new stitch. Enjoying a belly laugh with a dear friend while having a regular conversation on the phone. Sometimes joy is going out dancing with my salsa dancing crew, I always have a great time with them! On Saturday evening I went to a surprise birthday party for Anana Harris Parris. I met Anana over 25 years ago while out salsa dancing. An author and the founder of the Self Care Agency and Sister Care Alliance organizations, her focus is self-care as a form of social justice and social justice as a form of self-care. She conducts workshops and programs and she is constantly helping others. I call her Amazing, Awesome Anana! When I got the invite for the surprise party I was curious how they could pull off a surprise for this dynamo who had already had a 5k walk planned and was teaching a dance class earlier in the day. Here's what they did. Two of her friends were in town and they told her they had dinner reservations but wanted to see her new office space before they went. It was a perfect way to get her to the party! When Anana walked off the elevator into the office lobby, she saw a host of family and friends greeting her for the surprise. Mission accomplished! The joy on Anana's face was priceless! We went up to the office and Anana was greeted with African drumming and we continues the celebration with a combination of salsa music, house music and more. Anana has joyful laugh and energy and when she starts to dance, that energy radiates to anyone around. I not only felt joy for myself, I felt joy watching everyone else enjoy themselves. We had great food, fun and fellowship. I am grateful I really took the time to cherish the experience. Joy can be experienced whenever and wherever. I don't know about you, but as I continue to get older the little times of joy are even more important. We are always creating memories, I want to create more joy filled memories. The present moment creates our future history, it's essential to be FULLY present and to savor these moments. Listening to my salsa playlist brings me joy. Hanging out with my crochet group brings me joy. Laughing and enjoying time with my friends brings me joy. Taking a day trip or watching a movie with my husband brings me joy. What's bringing you joy right now? Leave a comment where you are listening to this podcast. You can also email me at barbarafaisonllc@gmail.com. Week 33 - Finding JOY! You can read AND see pictures my blog - barbarafaison.com/blog All the links are here - LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISON What is joy? According to the dictionary, it's a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. When was the last time you felt that feeling? I mean PURE JOY? On Friday night, my friend, Bonnie and I went out salsa dancing. On the way to the club, The Sanctuary, Bonnie and I tried to remember the last time we were “really” out dancing. We knew it was before “RONA” AKA, Covid 19, and we were pretty sure it was in 2019. Well thanks to Facebook I was able to take it back to Bonnie's birthday in April 2019. Had it really been four years? Oh my! If you are new or want to know more about my salsa journey and these awesome friends, check out Week 26 - Music and Lasting Friendships. Over 11 years ago I discovered I had osteoarthritis in my right hip and right knee, so my dancing has been a bit limited for the past few years. Physical therapy last year helped a lot even though I have pain most days. I decided I would dance and listen to my body and I'm so glad I did. I put on my dance shoes, thank goodness I could still wear them, and hit the floor. We weren't sure how many people we would know at the club, since we had been missing in action for so long. You know, what, we didn't care. We have learned that no matter what, we are GOING to have a good time. And we had a blast! Back in the day, we used to be at that club most Friday nights and other places during the week. Bonnie and I laughed and reminisced about our memories of dancing for over 20 years in the car on the way. When we arrived we found out that DJ Tito was the DJ. He used to be one of the main DJ's when we went out regularly. We knew the salsa music would be on fire, so we were ready for a great time. People came that we didn't know would be there, so it was like a salsa family reunion. Watching Bonnie, Terri, Jamie, Adiascar, Anana, Jazzie, Mark, Icesis and others I felt my heart swelling with pleasure and happiness! Oh, yeah, that's the definition of JOY. Dancing to the music and watching my friends and others enjoying themselves was PURE JOY! Were there moves I just can't do anymore, absolutely? Can I dance as long as I used to? Nope! I still felt the joy of dancing with partners who allowed the music to lead them. Bonnie and I left around 1 AM, wearing our salsa glow. If you want to see some of my salsa crew dancing, check out the short on my YouTube channel. And if you haven't subscribed, I love for you to support me there. Keep reading at barbarafaison.com/blog. Summary of Today's Show What is a boundary? A boundary is a very clear, proactive, communicated stance that is tied to what you critically need to fulfill your purpose and it can be a belief or an action. The most basic function of a boundary is that it serves as protection. Why are boundaries critical to self-care? Boundaries are critical to self-care because there is no way to sustain addressing what you critically need if you don't set a boundary that's also sustainable Why is it so difficult to set boundaries? Setting boundaries is difficult because doing so requires courage. Courage that sometimes cannot be established on your own. Often times, finding the courage you need to establish a clearly defined boundary requires you to ask for help. This can be especially difficult if you tend to be a perfectionist and place immense amounts of pressure on yourself to not make a mistake. This is because perfectionism requires that you not share your struggles with others. Others that you may need to establish sustainable boundaries and a strategy for self-care. What does it say about you if you have difficulty setting boundaries? It says that you're normal. How do we set a boundary? Knowing how and when to set a boundary requires you to develop a strategy around your critical self-care needs. Anana recommends evaluating your self-care needs by assessing what you need based on the seven self-care categories. The seven categories of self-care are: (1) Spiritual, (2) Emotional, (3) Artistic, (4) Economic, (5) Physical, (6) Educational, and (7) Social. An assessment of your needs should be taken EVERY DAY and your boundaries should be placed around those needs. This week's episode with Dr Anana and special guest Paula Reed raise awareness on Black Mental Health Week This Black Maternal Health Week. Did you know black women are 3-4 more times likely to die during childbirth or pregnancy related causes? The pandemic is making this even worse. Most of these deaths are considered preventable, and therefore, much more can be done to stop them. First, everyone—from doctors to the media to the public—needs to stop blaming women for their own deaths. Instead we should focus on better understanding the underlying contributing factors. These include a lack of data; not educating patients about signs and symptoms—and not believing them when they speak up; errors made by health care providers; and poor communication among different health care teams. Finally, studies have shown that interventions such as wider access to midwifery, group prenatal care, and social and doula support are effective in improving maternal health outcomes. It is important we make room for black mothers maternal mental health. We are more likely to experience some form of postpartum depression than our white counterparts. Our guest encouraged us go after the vision God gave you and the importance of collaboration rather than competition. We all are created to create Believe that YES YOU CAN!!
