Let's Meet For a Beer

Let's Meet For a Beer

This week on the Kondrat Podcast: a “Let’s Meet For A Beer” edition with Partake Brewing’s Founder and CEO Ted Fleming, who shares how a Crohn’s disease diagnosis led to him discovering a non-alcoholic beer landscape that didn’t satisfy his tastebuds, and how he’s solving that problem.Like many Albertans, Ted was a growing craft beer enthusiast in the early 2000s as a number of craft brewers throughout the US and BC started shipping their brews into the province. However in 2005 he received a Crohn’s disease diagnosis which meant that he would need to avoid beer because of the alcohol content. Ted admits that at first he didn’t take this too seriously, a decision that caught up with him while on a trip to Greece after the birth of his daughter - playing fast and loose with his consumption habits landed him a week in the hospital. After this he got into non alcoholic beer as a consumer, but discovered that the category was very boring. Wanting to enjoy some more variety, particularly while the variety of craft beer in the market was exploding, Ted started an online store for non alcoholic beer, brining in products from Europe with a larger variety. Running this store have him some exposure to the world of consumer packaged goods… and a foot in the door of the beer industry. Before long his customers started asking if he could get non alcoholic craft beer, so he began approaching brewers to ask if that was something they’d like to make and was largely laughed at.With craft brewers not taking the idea seriously Ted rolled up his sleeves and got ready to find other solutions to this problem. A college in Ontario had recently started up a brewing program, and while he admits that Partake probably wasn’t the initial client that the college would have expected, it has worked out very well for both of them, allowing them to secure a government grant for R&D funds, and to bring in a microbiology PhD and a former head brewer from Labatt, which gave them a level of credibility they wouldn’t have had with a traditional contract brewer.Once Partake was up and running in 2017 one of the big hurdles to overcome was the consumer perception of non alcoholic beer, which was made brutally obvious to Ted when he was told at a trade show that his product was “the dumbest idea ever.” And with the state of the non alcoholic category at the time, this wasn’t surprising. After all, Ted says that early on he was kind of solving his own problem of wanting a tastier non alcoholic beer. Today Partake is available in a number of grocery and liquor stores across Canada including Sobey's, Safeway, Loblaw’s, and Superstore, has a small team in both Calgary and Toronto, and is preparing to expand into the US after having just raised $4,000,000USD in funding. It has become much more than just a non alcoholic beer that satisfies Ted’s tastebuds, and with a 2018 World Beer Awards win for best non alcoholic beer, Partake Brewing is changing the landscape of non alcoholic beer and bringing craft beer to a whole new group of people who can socialize the way they want to while still being true to the health and wellness goals.— The Kondrat Podcast: website | facebookAlberta Beer Festivals: website | twitter | instagramTed Fleming - Partake Brewing: website | twitter | instagram | facebook

They.Adopted.Two.Not.One. This episode gives me all the feels. Two years ago, I traveled to Uganda with Rachelle as her adoption doula (yes that is a thing). She and her husband Pete were already 1.5 years into the adoption. The Ugandan government changed the adoption laws weeks before they were to come home with their son. The next 2 years were some of the most difficult of their lives. They traveled back and forth to Uganda-one at a time-spending weeks with their son while leaving their other two toddlers behind. On my trip with Rachelle, I was able to be witness to the process of watching their daughter come to them. She was there all along, in every photo, next to their son's side. But because of the law changes and the long process, on that trip, they decided to also bring Priscilla home.  On a teacher and social worker's salary they were able to save and fundraise the almost $90,000USD it took to adopt these two gorgeous spunky babes.  In this episode, we walk you through the steps to take and that are required for international adoption. We will inspire you not to worry about the costs and the money will come. God is so good. Rachelle,  details exactly how difficult the road was, but how worth it all was when her family of 6 was reunited at the airport on adoption day 2018.  For more information on Kidron Valley Orphanage or donating to their non-profit JoPri please follow @jopriuganda or visit: www.jopri.org And, if you missed Landon Donovan's epic goal in the 2010 World Cup-you can relive it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oI-BJPEsFEc BIRTH STORY PODCAST INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/birthstorypodcast BIRTH STORY PODCAST FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/birthstorypodcast LOOKING FOR A DOULA IN CHARLOTTE, NC? Busting the myth that our big 4 banks are "Too Big to Fail" (Part 1 of 2)

Finance & Fury Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 29, 2018 20:12

Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Furious Friday edition! Today’s misunderstanding is about the “Too big to fail” myth. I want to tell you a story. It’s probably a relatively unheard-of story… of our “Big 4” banks and their recent history.   The whole point of this is to answer: Are financial collapses created by too many regulations, or not enough?   The answer seems to be that more regulation is the only way to solve future financial crashes and any financial collapse has had some form of regulation come out of it as a result. But, the aim of this episode is to see if this has helped or hurt the economy and the banks overall   Warning: The banking system is pretty complicated, so there’s some points in this episode that might be pretty in depth. But that seems to be the whole point of the financial system: Make it so complicated not many people know what is going on. I have tried to make this as simple as possible so hopefully it isn’t a bore.   In this episode: What we will go through Banking sector: Vertical integration – One single company controls several others along the supply chain = profits come from different activities in different areas Look at history repeating itself – Comparing Australia to the US between 1999 and 2008 What really lead to the GFC, and how we may be blindly following the same path The big 4 banks - market share of the economy – the effects on the Stock Exchange and the population   Timeline: How did we get where we are now? Banks listed: early 80s to 91 for CBA - No guarantee on deposits at that point APRA Australian Prudential Regulation Authority – Regulation for Banks - has only been around since 1998 Before this: The riskier banks wanted to be, the higher the interest rate they would need to offer Under tighter regulations, risky banks had to comply to less risky standards Goodbye risk premium on interest Regulations continued as normal for a while, until financial crisis: We had a scare in 2008 – during the GFC banks stopped lending to one another for short term funding for their expenses Banks who can’t operate shut doors. Lehman Brothers for instance Bank runs – Great depression in the US 4,000 banks closed from 1929 to 1933 US banks started doing ‘bailouts’ – In essence, printing money to buy Mortgage Backed Securities off the banks (we’ll come back to this) Fearing a bank run in Australia - October 2008, right at the peak of the GFC, the Australian government decided to guarantee bank deposits This is new-Australian Deposit Insurance – Guaranteed for the public (ironically by the public as well) History has shown Government can’t risk the market effects of wiping out people’s bank deposits – especially when voters money was on the line A guarantee helps to calm the public – if a policy says the money is secure it must be! The Financial Claims Scheme (FCS) was created - emergency measure to secure the banking system. Who is eligible: Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions (ADIs) - bank, building society or credit union. This means that this money is guaranteed if anything happens to the ADI. It applies to all ADIs incorporated in Australia, including Australian-owned banks, foreign subsidiary banks, building societies and credit unions. ADIs insured for up to $1m Feb 2012 – Dropped to $250,000   Sounds good right? Nice and safe! Safety has a dark side – It isn’t really safety for us, but the Banks! Removes incentives for depositors to review a bank before depositing – Onus is taken off us Some banks could offer higher returns, if riskier. But with this it is all the same – almost zero risk – removed risk premium on interest What behaviours it incentivises Increased risk Insurance creates moral hazard – Insurance to cover risky actions Maximise profits as the risks are covered for the most part It really provides safety to banks, and they can increase their risks – like giving a gambler a guarantee on his losses if he made a risky bet? Increased incentives to maximise profits But where from? Derivatives, asset backed securities and covered bonds – these can be risky Massive spike since 2011 of bank profits coming in the form of derivatives Derivatives: Complex financial bits of magic The options – Forward & Future Contracts, swaps, etc. Locking in rates now for the future Asset Backed Securities – Investment with an underlying asset - MBS – CBA: in one security - $2.65bn in mostly AAA rated Covered Bonds – Change in regulation in 2011 = AAA rated bonds issued Debt instruments covered by mortgages Sitting at over $80bn in value since 2011 One difference is issuer covers bonds if they default, not on securities though   What stops this all going wrong: APRA has to overregulate in response – Strong regulatory intervention through the (APRA). Australia has strong regulation but even the best regulation can be gamed. They have to be closely monitored by APRA – But banks are still incentivised to take on more risk Derivatives are held ‘off the books’ and very hard to regulate NAB and CBA stopped disclosing theirs, so who knows what their current levels are?!   Why does it matter? What happens to just 4 banks has an affect on everything! Where we sit today: The big 4 = 25% of the ASX   The ASX is one of the most concentrated in the world Financials – 35% of our index, 25% is just the big 4 banks What is the fate of our market if the big 4 tank? We saw it in the GFC Declines in the banks of over 50% = Big drop in index and panic selling across the board If our banks rise, our market does, they fall, we all suffer, because the government will print money to stop the collapse (bailouts!) Double death! – Both Equity and Debt markets – Comes from regulation. Used to be just one at a time   Why are just 4 banks so big? The regulations lead to concentration at the top – Economies of scale to survive The banks love (or loved – see the Banking Royal Commission) vertical integration! It was needed to survive in the regulatory world.   Current state of the banks 1991 - Commonwealth – Bankwest (2008), Aussie, Colonial First State 1982 - Westpac – RAMS, St George (2008), BankSA, Bank of Melbourne, BT Hastings (Infrastructure), Ascalon, Advance, Securitor, Magnitude 1982 - NAB – Ubank, MLC, Banks of New Zealand JBWere BOQ – Virgin Money, Investec Bank, Home Building society Bendigo bank – Adelaide bank, Delphi Bank, Rural bank The party is over for most as they are selling other divisions: CFS for CBA   Hopefully the vertical integration can be looked at – A brief history of things: It was similar in the US: Has the guarantee $250,000USD, however something went wrong Glass-Steagall – Part of the 1933 Banking Act of the USA – Prohibited vertical integration Congress debated bills to repeal Glass–Steagall's affiliation provisions (Sections 20 and 32). In 1999 Congress passed the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act, also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, to repeal them – But not the guarantee (almost the same place as our system since 2011) How much safety does the guarantee provide to the public? They had it in the US, but that arguably lead to the banks behaviours – Look at this in next Fridays episode How bailouts are funded through “Quantitative Easing” as it was called in the US, but it is printing money by any other name What allows for these bail outs, where the money comes from and the flow on effects of cash advancing your unlimited credit card, but at the government level it is ‘Quantitative Easing’ Thanks for listening! Next Friday we look at Part 2 of this question

The project was initially under the name of AntShares, but later it was renamed to NEO.  Interesting facts: NEO is often called “Chinese Ethereum”; NEO is partnered with a company called OnChain which has extensive experience in integrating blockchain to businesses; While Ethereum only supports their own programming language – Solidity; NEO supports most of the common programming languages around, like C, C++, C#, JavaScript, Java and Python; NEO is essentially developing their platform to be quantum computer proof; The fact that China acts quite independently from the West shows that Chinese companies like Alibaba, WeChat and NEO can become hugely successful even if there are already more successful and established counterparts from the West; NEO is currently not a distributed blockchain, which means that, while it is decentralized, it is only operated on a few nodes, which are all controlled by NEO itself. But during 2018 they have promised to start distributing the network; The cost of launching a smart contract on NEO is quite expensive – over $10,000USD. Whitepaper: http://docs.neo.org/en-us/ Website: https://neo.org/ Coinmarketcap: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/neo   Stellar [XLM] Stellar is an open-source protocol for exchanging money founded by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim in early 2014. Stellar was initially based on Ripple systems, with the aim of redesigning the global economy for more inclusiveness. But citing the complexity of the system, Stellar later redesigned itself with a brand new system of its own. Interesting facts: The native asset of Stellar is called Lumens [XLM]; One of the major partners with Stellar is IBM; While Ripple is developed by ex-bankers and financial professionals, Stellar is built by start-up veterans, like WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg and Y-Combinator President Sam Altman; Jeb McCaleb, co-founder of Stellar, and also a co-founder of Ripple, was banished from Ripple before creating Stellar, but he still receives payments from the company; Whitepaper: https://www.stellar.org/papers/stellar-consensus-protocol.pdf Website: https://stellar.org Coinmarketcap: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/stellar   Monero [XMR] Monero is an open-source cryptocurrency created in April 2014 that focuses on privacy and decentralization. Monero aims to improve on existing cryptocurrency design by obscuring sender, recipient and amount of every transaction made as well as making the mining process more equal. Interesting facts: Monero’s focus on privacy has attracted many people who are interested in evading the law. Its egalitarian mining process is also used by hackers who embed mining code into websites and apps. Monero uses Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses and Ring Confidential Transactions to provide its users with maximum privacy. Monero is often associated with Darknet and illegal activities because of its enhanced anonymity and privacy. Whitepaper: https://getmonero.org/resources/research-lab/ Website: https://getmonero.org   Coinmarketcap: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/monero EOS [EOS] EOS is a blockchain-based, decentralized operating system, designed to support commercial-scale decentralized applications by providing all of the necessary core functionality, enabling businesses to build blockchain applications in a way similar to web-based applications. Interesting facts: “EOS” is not an officially defined acronym, but the community has given it many different names like, “Ethereum On Steroids”, “End Of Silence”, “Endless Online Scaling”, and even “EOS Operating System”. EOS distributes its tokens during a 341-day ICO, which has an entirely novel structure. The ICO is divided into 350 23-hour long windows, in every window 2,000,000EOS tokens will be distributed amongst investors at market price. The first 5 days of EOS’s ICO were done “traditionally”, during which EOS raised around $185M in ETH. Running an EOS node requires Linux/OS X operating system. Whitepaper: https://github.com/EOSIO/Documentation/blob/master/TechnicalWhitePaper.md   Website: https://eos.io Coinmarketcap: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/eos   Dash [DASH] Dash is a peer-to-peer open-source cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, acting as digital cash that can be sent without the need for middlemen like the bank. Dash was created by Evan Duffield and launched on the 18th of January, 2014 as a fork of Litecoin. The coin started off under the name XCoin, later to be renamed to Darkcoin, and was finally rebranded to Dash (derivative of “Digital” and “Cash”). Interesting facts: Dash is classified as a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) because of its self-governance practice; Within the first 48 hours from the creation of the coin around 1.9 million or approximately 10% of the total supply of the coins were mined. This mishap happened because of a bug in the difficulty parameters in the code when Litecoin was forked to create Dash. The problem was quickly fixed. Dash uses two-tier The first tier consists of regular miners who confirm the transactions, and the second tier consists of MasterNodes that perform InstantSend, PrivateSend and governance functions. Running a MasterNode costs an initial payment of 1000 DASH; Dash’s partnership with Coinapult makes it possible to buy Dash with over 20 different fiat currencies. Whitepaper: https://github.com/dashpay/dash/wiki/Whitepaper Website: https://www.dash.org/ Coinmarketcap: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/dash   IOTA [MIOTA] IOTA is a next generation public distributed ledger that, unlike other cryptocurrencies that utilize blockchain, utilizes a novel technological approach, called the “Tangle”. The Tangle is a new data structure based on a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). Interesting facts: IOTA was founded in 2014 as a German non-profit organization; IoT devices have been regarded as the 4th industrial revolution, as it opens up never before seen opportunities, and IOTA is positioning itself as a critical factor to make IoT revolution happen; In November 2017, Microsoft's Blockchain specialist, Omkar Naik was quoted saying that Microsoft will partner with IOTA, which was later proven to not be the case; In December of 2017 the price of IOTA skyrocketed from around $1 to $5 in a matter of a week, as IOTA announced partnerships with Samsung and Fujitsu. Whitepaper: https://iota.org/IOTA_Whitepaper.pdf Website: https://iota.org/ Coinmarketcap: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/iota   NEM [XEM] New Economy Movement (NEM) is an enterprise-grade solution to power the impending blockchain economy, focusing on creating a smart asset blockchain which could effectively work under heavy workloads. Originally NEM was intended to be a fork of NXT, but the community decided to go with a completely new code. The alpha release was launched on June 25, 2014 and the full version was launched on March 31, 2015. Interesting facts: The idea behind NEM was started by a Bitcointalk forum user called UtopianFuture, and the developers of NEM are keeping themselves pseudonymous. The launch of the currency was not a smooth road. People who held the NEMstake asset or signed up to Bitcointalk forum to receive their coins did not receive them, instead the coins; To run a booted and synchronized node a harvester must hold at least 10,000 NEM; At the start of 2018, over $500 million in NEM was stolen from a Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck.
