This program is inspired by "Coatlicue & Las Meninas: The Stanford Edition" (2007/2025) by Mexican American artist Pedro Lasch, commissioned by IAJS and on view at Asheville Art Museum from April 16 to July 13, 2025. Asheville Art Museum associate curator Jessica Orzulak and artist Pedro Lasch discuss the work's larger themes, including how mirrors encourage viewers to reflect on the movement of people, ideas, and objects across time and space. Then, a panel featuring Stanford IAJS founding faculty co-director Tomás Jiménez, philosopher and ethicist Kwame Anthony Appiah, immersive journalism and extended reality (XR) pioneer Nonny de la Peña, and immigrant integration advocate Federico Rios will discuss the ways Americans, old and new, see ourselves in each other. This is the first program in “What Can Become of Us?”, a collaboration between the Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies (IAJS) and Zócalo Public Square, envisioning new perspectives on migration, America's diverse communities, and how people come together across differences. Mike Vinopal (Opal Vinopal, Local Motive, badcandy, wht.rbbt.obj) joined me for food and conversation outside Hey Nonny in Arlington Heights (10 South Vail Avenue/heynonny.com). The episode starts with an acoustic performance of the Opal Vinopal song “Speck in the Universe,” and then transitions to the food from Hey Nonny… lots of food! Cheese curds with IPA ranch? The Nonny Burger (2 Slagel Farm beef patties/aged cheddar/dijonnaise/bacon jam/ caramelized red onions, brioche)? Yes, please! We talked about all of Mike’s projects, including his new, very personal, Opal Vinopal songs. We also got caught up on Local Motive, badcandy and wht.rbbt.obj. See Local Motive at Hey Nonny on May 15! Speaking of Hey Nonny … what on earth does the name mean? In their words: Old English songs and verse use “Hey Nonny Nonny” to describe a state of cheerful bliss you feel as you let go of your cares. In Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the song “Sigh No More” reminds women that “men were deceivers ever.” What to do about it? “Be you blithe and bonnie, converting all your sounds of woe into Hey Nonny Nonny.” We also love the Violent Femmes’ 1991 song “Hey Nonny Nonny” in which the singer tries to suppress his “wanton thoughts” inspired by a “beauty bathing” into . . . “Hey Nonny Nonny.” Car Con Carne sponsored by Easy Automation: easy-automation.net Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation. 1906 ATLANTA RACE MASSACRE is a phone-based AR experience directed by Nonny de la Peña that digs into the forgotten history of the violent attacks on the black community by white mobs incited by race-baiting politicians and newspapers. The arc of the story is told through the lens of black journalist Max Barber, who was chronicling the events as they were unfolding. We see a series of volumetrically captured monologues by Barber (played by actor Bryonn Bain). As the massacre unfolds, we travel to different key locations around Atlanta represented by spatial facades and Quill illustrations. There's also a series of 2D AI animations ranging from white politicians in newspapers to black activists who are in picture frames. I spoke with de la Peña around some of the constraints and limitations of working with mobile phones that are not completely optimized for XR experiences like this just yet, but it's much more accessible form factor that the executive producer of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights is interested getting into schools. SalvagedInterview with Shanna M HeathIn this Faith and Family Fellowship episode, Dallas interviews Shanna M Heath, author of, "Salvaged".About The Book:Hadley, forced to relocate with her estranged father at age seventeen, searches for belonging. A cancer diagnosis threatens to take her beloved Nonny, and a looming senior project might just break her. High school senior Hadley is certain she must earn a summer internship at the Office of Naval Research, and she's pretty darn confident she might! Unfortunately, her world is turned upside down by the news of her grandmother Nonny's bleak cancer diagnosis. Hadley is forced to relocate from her home in Maryland to Kentucky to live with her estranged father and (gulp!) new step-family. As Hadley prepares to face a world of unknowns, she fears she will lose her beloved Nonny, and her hopes of snagging her dream internship seemingly disappear. In the midst of adjusting to her new life in the bluegrass, Hadley steps into the unexpectedly pleasant role of half-sister and tackles a daunting senior project interning at a local business, Southern Salvage. Here, Hadley strives to befriend her peer mentor Colton, who seems all too eager to rid himself of a burdensome intern. At first. As Hadley navigates life in an unfamiliar state, school, and family, can she overcome the overwhelming sense she's disrupted everyone's happy normal? Is she just an unwelcome inconvenience? She wonders...has God abandoned Hadley Edwards? With the help of her family and Colton, Hadley might just learn the true meaning of “salvaged.”Buy Your Copy of the Book: https://a.co/d/6EkvDRwThank you for listening and supporting the 'Faith and Family Fellowship PODCAST SHOW'. In the merry land of Messina, mirth and mischief dance a lively jig. Kenneth Branagh, as our gallant Benedick, doth spar with Emma Thompson's sharp-tongued Beatrice, their jests as quick as summer lightning, whilst Robert Sean Leonard's Claudio, deceived by foul machinations, doth spurn his fair Hero, played by tender Kate Beckinsale. Amidst the confusion, Denzel Washington, as noble Don Pedro, guideth the play to a joyful denouement, and Keanu Reeves, as the black-hearted Don John, meets his just desserts. Wow, my first very own podcast! My first real interview with a real person – the first of many. I'm a bit nervous, but I love new challenges and unfamiliar worlds. So, let's go! In this episode, I will be visiting the “Godmother of Virtual Reality” Nonny de la Peña in Los Angeles – that's right, Los Angeles. Exciting, huh? Benedict and Beatrice's friends contrive to bring them together by pretending to know that they secretly love each other.
Our guest this week is Diana Williams, who, after 30 years in the entertainment media industry working on premier content like the Star Wars Marvel Cinematic universes, has founded a new company, Kinetic Energy Entertainment, focused on partnering with creatives to build new intellectual property (IP) for today's rapidly changing media landscape. Starting with a clear and holistic definition of IP as being a story world with multiple points of entry for an audience, Diana sees this as a way to honor rich content by developing the ABC's – Audience, Business, Creative – in tandem with specific media formats, thus building authentic engagement with the audience from the start, rather than marketing to them after a product is developed. We look at how entertainment revenue models have changed with streaming, and how business is struggling to change to fit that reality. Talking through one of her current projects, a PC game called Political Arena developed with pundit Eliot Nelson, we get a closer look at some of the strategies that guide this venture, and also the changing role of entertainment as a source of education. Without having the primary goal to educate, entertainment increasingly, if unwittingly, fills that gap, but does that make it a responsibility? While audience demand may still be dragging the legacy entertainment industry kicking and screaming toward changes in representation, that is the tide, and Diana is betting that building entertainment around audience truth is the way to develop solid and loyal fan relationships that will in turn feed into better content.A full transcript of this episode will be available soon! Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Diana's company, Kinetic Energy EntertainmentMore about the Peabody Interactive BoardAnd the inaugural Winners for Digital and Interactive Storytelling, which were announced on 3/24/2022Some of the press coverage of Political Arena game:Washington PostNPRWashingtonianMarketWatchMicThe Times UKCheddarSteam page, including the "attack ad" trailer for the gamePolitical Arena creator and HuffPost columnist Eliot Nelson (book, The Beltway Bible)Science and Entertainment ExchangeControversy over whether to recast T'Challa (Black Panther) in the MCUFor more on games-based learning, see:Kurt SquireJames Paul GeeZoe CorwinKatie Salen TakinbasFor more about building out story worlds, check out our previous episodes with Nonny de La Peña, Alex McDowell, and Ann Pendleton-JulianWe've also done several episodes about Transmedia StorytellingFor more on games-based learning, listen to our episode with Kurt Squire and Katie Salen Tekinbas.… and for more discussion of Fast & Furious fandom, check out our previous episode with Sue Ding!Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! Trends in the food industry happen all the time. We can usually spot them a mile away. Ten years ago, craft beer took Vancouver and British Columbia by storm, when the market saw an opening and took full advantage of what was needed and desired. I believe we're on the cusp of another big movement – this time, with the non-alcoholic sector. New entrants are emerging regularly and consumers have taken notice. They want quality and variety. With that being said, I wanted to find out who's doing what, and there's no better way to do that than by speaking with two new upstarts in the field: Nick Devine, from Edna's Non-Alcoholic Cocktail Company, and Lane Matkovich, co-founder (with his brother, Leigh Matkovich) of Nonny Beer. Both businesses have just gotten off the ground (Edna's, literally the day of airing) and I only predict big things ahead for them both. In this episode I seek to learn about their process, their brands, and how they see this market evolving with them in it. I also recently caught wind of The Flipside a new publication from wine pro/sommelier/journalist Kurtis Kolt, about his low-booze/no-booze journey to understanding the non-alcoholic sphere. With his background in reviewing wines and spirits, Kolt brings a curious bent to the conversation. With all three of them on board, the resulting conversation is informative, at times funny and, in my opinion, definitely worth your time!Scout is one of Vancouver's leading food and culture magazines. If you're wanting to learn more about the city's food and cultural sphere with regards to community news, new restaurant openings, essential guides to some of the city's best offerings as well as who's hiring, Scout is where you should go. We're proud to have Scout as our presenting sponsor as we believe what they “Scout out” is an excellent compliment to what we're offering here with Track and Food. Do check them out. scoutmagazine.ca

One of the things Nonny recommends for others when they know they want to make a transition is to just start talking to people. Reach out to people in positions or even fields you are interested in and have a conversation. Ask them questions, find out more information about what they do and how they got there so you are better informed about what moves you might want to make. Nonny said talking to people and listening to podcasts about others doing similar work helped her take steps toward making the transition from her former big firm to her current role doing civil rights advocacy. Conversations are one of the first steps and will help with answer many of the unknown questions that you will inevitably have.
