Houseplants and interior design: you'd think these two passions would go together like two peas in a pod, but they can sometimes be at war with each other. We can find ourselves desperately wanting to style plants in rooms with no light, or getting overwhelmed with figuring out how to make our homes look planty and not cluttered. Many plant people don't know the first thing about interior design trends, and many interior designers don't know the first thing about plant care (even if they want to have plants in their designs). Luckily for us, I recently met Betsy, of the Affordable Interior Design podcast, and we decided to huddle up and see how we can match our compatible but different skill sets together and came up with this collaborative episode! Betsy breaks down various design styles, and I match plants that would suit those aesthetics. I'm in a celebratory mood! September holds a lot of meaning here at Affordable Interior Design. It's back to school time, and it's also my anniversary. I celebrated my personal anniversary with my husband of 11 years, and our anniversary happens to be September 11th. So as a New Yorker, this date has extra meaning. It was 9/11 that spurred me to become an interior designer. I also celebrated my business anniversary - it's my 16th anniversary of being in business. I still can't have a big celebration due to the pandemic, so I'm celebrating in a small way. It's me, my dog, and the podcast listeners. It's really easy to miss the wins because you're so busy with the to-do list, so thank you for indulging me as I celebrate this win. I also want to celebrate that I get to help you guys by answering your questions. Please send me your questions at affordableinteriordesign.com/podcast . I'm always excited to help you! Betsy Helmuth joins this episode of the Wingnut Social podcast to share exactly how she broadened her reach—and how you can too. If you’re ready to 10x your influence, this is the episode for you. BOOK: The Pumpkin Plan by Mike Michalowicz 60 Days In Be a fresh slice o’ pie Betsy has been on TV—almost from day one. She loves all things TV. It’s the language she speaks. If you want to get on tv, it helps to be in a place where there’s a ton of media. But if you’re in smaller towns, the bonus is that there’s less competition. News and media outlets constantly need content. They’re looking for stories. But most people approach them the wrong way. Betsy emphasizes that you need to come to them with “A fresh slice of lemon pie.” When you bite into it, it needs to be refreshing and delicious yet creamy and decadent. You need to give the media something timely and fresh and you can’t make them do the work. You can easily get to anyone’s mailbox through a Google search. Show up in that mailbox with a baked pie. How do you do that? What are the ingredients of the pie? Here are a few tips to craft a pitch that your local media will want to gobble up: Become familiar with the outlet. They want to know you understand them. Speak to them the way they speak to others. What’s their vibe? What words do they use? Speak their language. Do they love transformations? Doing craft projects on air? Pitch them something they haven't done before. Give them something fresh. Who are you? What resonates with your brand? What are you an authority on? Betsy cautions that you have to be prepared to spend hours on this and never get a response. Be prepared to pitch repeatedly. Be prepared to get the door slammed in your face many times. But when you finally hit it, it gives you legitimacy in your client’s eyes for years to come. How do you reach out? What do you say? Listen for all of Betsy’s tips! Did Betsy’s book 10x her influence? Betsy cannot stress this enough: Don’t write a book hoping to make money. If you do make money, you are one of the rare few. She sees her book as the shiny version of a business card. It helps people get to know you. It lends credibility to your expertise in the space. Think of it as a key that can open some doors. It can introduce you in a new way. But now that self-publishing is so popular, writing a book isn’t so special anymore. She points out that there are so many other ways to be relevant—like hosting a podcast. You can start a podcast covering your core ten principles and you still get visibility. According to Betsy, you should “Choose what comes organically to you. I love to write and I love to present. Those things are things that fill me up whether or not I make money, whether or not they get me anywhere.” Give something fresh that’s you. Do you have anything new or innovative to share in the space? She states that life is too freaking short. Don’t do what other people say legitimizes you. Do what feels valuable to you and the people you want to reach. Are you still achieving what you want to achieve? Don’t run anyone else’s race. Betsy notes “The time and energy that it takes to make something good is not worth it if it’s not authentic.” Connect With Darla & Wingnut Social www.WingnutSocial.com On Facebook On Twitter: @WingnutSocial On Instagram: @WingnutSocial Darla’s Interior Design Website Check out the Wingnut Social Media Lab Facebook Group! 1-877-WINGNUT (connect with us for your social media marketing needs) Subscribe to The Wingnut Social Podcast on iTunes, Google Podcasts, or TuneIn Audio Production and Show notes byPODCAST FAST TRACKhttps://www.podcastfasttrack.com

People automatically assume that having a beautiful home is impossible on a budget. We are here to tell you that not only is it possible, it is not as hard as you think! With a few mindset shifts and some creativity, you can have the home you always wanted. If you are a new listener to Colorful Conversations, we would love to hear from you. You can find us 24/7 on Instagram @tasha.kaleidoscope and on Facebook at Kaleidoscope Living. You can also check out our YouTube channel. As a thank you for listening, we have an awesome FREE guide called “5 Easy Steps to Design A Room You Love.” Text “DESIGNTIPS” to 44222 and you will get the guide in your inbox! In this episode:0:37 - Today, we’re talking about affordable interior design (and if it’s even possible), but first, what’s happening on the home front? Joe and Tasha are tackling yard work in the crazy North Carolina heat - mowing the lawn, putting pine straw out, and having some sprinkler fun with the kids! Remember to check out Rachio, the smart wifi sprinkler system that Joe and Tasha use. 5:00 - Sidebar: Game of Thrones is over! Joe may have fallen asleep during the episode… What did you think of the ending? 6:33 - Back to business - it’s Joe and Tasha’s 17th wedding anniversary this week! That means we definitely have to play How-Well-Do-Tasha-and-Joe-Know-Each-Other (a.k.a. the “oldywed” game, according to Thea). This week’s question is what is the other person’s favorite thing to splurge on? Joe guesses that Tasha’s favorite splurge is on their vacations, while Tasha thinks Joe’s (rare) splurges may be more practical, like a new trash can or a couple more dollars in the retirement account. 11:52 - You know that this is no ordinary podcast. Make sure to follow us on Instagram @tasha.kaleidoscope where we announce our upcoming topics and you can submit your questions for us to answer. We also love reading your feedback on iTunes, so leave us a review! If we pick your question or review from social media to feature on the podcast, we’ll send you a free gift!12:21 - One of the things that Tasha hears most often is “I just don’t have the money to decorate my house.” But there are some great, affordable, and fun ways to decorate your home! Affordable interior design is 100% possible with some creative ideas. Some of the “roadside rescue” furniture pieces are Tasha and Joe’s favorites in their home. 18:25 - It’s tough love time. If you don’t love your home and you’re blaming it on a lack of budget, you may not be trying hard enough! Re-evaluate where you’re spending your money, see where you can save some pennies, and make conscious choices if you’re serious about making decorating a priority. 21:57 - Let’s take a quick break to hear from our sponsor! Today’s episode is brought to you by Designer In A Binder, a comprehensive, step-by-step workbook and e-book that teaches you how to design spaces with the intention to create a home that you love! The physical copy of Designer In A Binder includes a custom three-ring binder, custom tabbed pages and worksheets to design six different spaces in your house. To purchase Designer in a Binder, visit www.designerinabinder.com. 24:10 - It’s tip time! Tasha and Joe share their favorite, practical tips for affordable home decor and interior design. Joe’s first tip is a great one for listeners who love a $0 price tag; it’s to declutter and clean up your house! You can clean and freshen your home, simplify your possessions, and even sell what you no longer need or want! 26:37 - Tip #2 is you can do it yourself, which is literally how Joe and Tasha’s home reno adventures got started! Joe’s frugality paired with Tasha’s design desires pushed them to start DIY-ing to achieve a beautiful space on a thrifty budget. The internet and websites like Pinterest are great for finding DIY projects, but there are so many basic DIY projects to try out (like painting) if you’re just getting started.29:27 - Tasha and Joe have done a lot of the legwork already. Check out the links below for more insight and research on paint, find inventive ways to fill up empty wall space, and work your way up to bigger projects like the DIY Plank Wall!31:04 - Tip #3: Customize things yourself! Many of the things we see and covet on Pinterest and Instagram are custom items with hefty price tags. While custom home decor can be a worthwhile investment, it doesn’t mean you can’t get a custom look on a budget too. IKEA hacks were invented just for this - check out 10 of our favorite IKEA hacks, and then go see 10 more amazing custom hack ideas!35:00 - Tip #4 is all about creating a focal point (yes, on a budget!) A focal point really helps to ground a room and make it more inviting. Most people think of art pieces being a focal point (which can be pricey), but let us introduce you to the magic of digital art prints. Etsy.com is a great place to find affordable and unique digital artwork that you can download and get printed at an office supply store, or Tasha’s go-to website, printful.com. Don’t want to spend money on frames? Try hanging with some chic gold binder clips or fun washi tape!39:12 - Looking for some digital art to get started? Kaleidoscope Living email subscribers get free access to Tasha’s library of downloadable prints! Text “ARTLIBRARY” to 44222 and we’ll email you the link and password to access the free print library. 41:04 - The main takeaway? You can have a beautiful house on any budget! Use our tips to help you get started on creating a space that is uniquely yours. Hiring an interior designer can be a tricky sell for many homeowners and renters. For many people, interior design feels like it's way outside of their budget. The lack of affordable interior design was a gap in the market that today's guest, Betsy Helmuth, saw and realized she was meant to fill. Betsy Helmuth is the owner of Affordable Interior Design and a nationally celebrated interior designer. She wrote a popular DIY design book, “Big Design, Small Budget: Create a Glamorous Home in Nine Thrifty Steps”, and hosts a weekly home decorating podcast by the same name. Betsy and I talk about the structure of the interior design industry and why Betsy wanted to offer a more affordable design service so that clients of any budget could afford to hire a designer. She also shares her tips for budgeting, creating a high-end look with wallet-friendly pieces, and some of the common design mistakes she sees homeowners (and even fellow designers!) make when designing a home. Betsy is incredibly generous with her advice in this episode – don't miss out! You can find complete show notes and more information at https://www.staged4more.com/podcast

Betsy Helmuth: Affordable Interior Designer On this episode of The Louge, fellow podcaster and interior designer, Betsy Helmuth joins us to talk about Affordable Interior Design and how to design your own home on a budget, at your leisure. Her podcast, Big Design, Small Budget runs every Tuesday and is available on iTunes where she spills inside tips on design and how to do it yourself. Getting to Know Betsy Betsy waits all week for her Saturday night tradition of going to Outback Steakhouse with her family and ordering a martini. She recently became a suburban mom, moving her life to from NY City, where her business began, to Westchester. Her business has expanded from Manhatten to the suburbs and now, across the globe online. Inside Affordable Interior Design Besty's company only consists of 5 designers and 2 handymen yet they get 8-15 new clients every week, and design 500-700 spaces a year! They've worked with everyone from hoarders to billionaires. What makes Affordable Interior Design, affordable, is offering flat rate plans that tell clients exactly what to do and buy, so they can execute it on their own time and at their own rate. The whole process only takes 6 hours! 2 hours are spent meeting in person or online, 2-3 hours are reserved for the designers to 'shop' online and build a mood board, and the last hour is to meet back up on the phone to look at and tweak items. All that is left is for the client to execute the vision! Now they can budget accordingly. 90% of Betsy's business consists of this plan that clients implement on their own, but they do offer packages where the designers do everything as well, it's just more expensive as you have to pay for their time. Marketing Betsy never spent a lot of time on advertising, if any at all, as her name advertised for itself. If anyone googles "affordable interior design," her website pops up. Which, is exactly what the user is looking for. Then her reviews, referrals, history, and designers' degrees and high-end experience leads people to stick around and use the service. Recently though, for the last 3 months and for the first time in 10 years she has started marketing and hired people to help. As the company grows and more designers are added to the team, she wants to make sure clientele is still growing also. Betsy has an impressive repertoire of PR but has never paid for any of it. Each exposure has its own story and some were as simple as a Google search. Find her on the Today Show, the Wall Street Journal, LifeTime, NBC, CNN, USA Today HGTV, the DIY Network and more here. Betsy shares with us that TV exposure doesn't really translate to clientele at the time, but instead, after the fact it gives credibility and interest. A lot of marketing is about good photography and Nick tells us his secret hack on how to get high-quality pictures for cheap. Inside The Podcast: Big Design, Small Budget Betsy's had her podcast now for a year and a half now. She believes that knowing how to design is a right, not a gift. You shouldn't have to hire someone. The principals of design can easily be learned by anyone, you don't need a magic eye. Betsy is passionate about giving away her design secrets and imparting everything she knows on others. You have to live in your home, so you should be comfortable doing so. Betsy also tells us how she got started in the podcast world and how it has helped reach and boost her online platform which includes design classes, design packages, and her book. Of everything, Betsy loves that the items she chooses can really make a difference in people lives. She tells us that she truly believes furniture can change people's lives. Our guest today is Betsy Helmuth, owner and operator of Affordable Interior Design. She has designed over 1500 spaces including apartments in Argentina, a McDonalds in Brooklyn, and a mansion in India. Betsy started out by working for free for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s Thom Filicia, while making a living as a bartender. This led to her becoming interested in having her own firm. She reached out to Thom because it was something she wanted to do, but he came back to her and said he needed her help. Sometimes when you see people on big platforms you think they’ve made it in different ways. If anything, they are probably looking to grow and it’s a really good time to reach out. Once she got clarity, Betsy’s business grew from an idea to the six-figure mark in a couple of years. Betsy didn’t know anything about SEO when she started blogging but she just kept writing all the time. She would sit down at the beginning of the month and line them all up. She would come up with ideas for different days of the week. She would put a picture up and a couple sentences of what she thought about it. If you’re going to do something, if you are going to maintain that consistency, then you have to get really passionate about it. Nurture your tribe. Put a lot of information out there but when you nurture your prospects and the people they become your tribe. When you hire someone they are living your brand and you have such a specific trade, how did you manage the process? I evaluated the way I work. I have a very specific method for how I work. It’s the same for every client that I have ever seen. I do and say the same thing to each client. So, I teach that to my designers. Even though all my interior designers have all been to interior design school, unlike me. Even though they have all worked as paid designers in the field, unlike me. I also make them train for a month in my method. So when you get an Affordable Interior Design designer, they are going to do all the steps that I do so that I know that every client is getting the exact same experience. So, I had to distill this unpredictable design method into a very formulaic. Which is how I like to work. Freedom with in a form. So I have a formula that I do every time and it works every time. Betsy Helmuth (@BetsyHelmuth) is an interior designer & decorator in New York City. Her company, Affordable Interior Design, offers, well, affordable interior design. Over the years, she's designed rooms in over 1,000 apartments, as well as many offices and home offices. In this conversation, we discuss some simple steps that we creative pros can take to improve our workspaces — both while renting an office and in fixing up our home office. We cover lighting, colour, shelving, storage, and other little "hacks" for setting up shop and enjoying a happy, productive, creative work-day.
