Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Charles Busch, Award-Winning Playwright and Drag Performer, Author, “Leading Lady: A Memoir of a Most Unusual Boy”About Harvey's guest:Today's guest, Charles Busch, occupies a unique and highly acclaimed place in the world of entertainment.   He's a playwright, actor, director, novelist, cabaret performer and drag legend, whose characters evoke the great cinematic actresses of the golden age of Hollywood.   As a young man, his ambition was to have his own theatrical troupe, and write camp, movie-inspired comedies in which he could play the leading lady in drag.  and that he did.   He's written and starred in over 25 plays including “The Divine Sister”, “The Lady in Question”, “Red Scare on Sunset”, “The Tribute Artist”, “The Confession of Lily Dare”, and one of my all time favourites, “Pardon my Inquisition or Kiss the Blood Off my Castanets”, starring our guest in the dual roles of the tempestuous spitfire prostitute Maria Garbanzo and her look-alike, the tragic noblewoman the Marquesa del Drago.  And I can't resist mentioning his hilariously camp and heartwarming classic Christmas show, “Times Square Angel”, which has been performed annually for over 30 years.    But there can be no question that in the world of theatre, our guest is best known for 2 of his hit plays: “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom”, which is one of the longest running plays in the history of Off-Broadway; and his smash long-running Broadway hit, “The Tale of the Allergist's Wife”, which earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play, and won our guest the Outer Circle Critics' Award for playwrighting.    He also wrote and starred in the film versions of his plays, “Psycho Beach Party” and “Die Mommie Die”, which won him the Best Performance Award at the Sundance Film Festival.  He also directed the film, “A Very Serious Person” starring Polly Bergen, which won an honorable mention at the Tribeca Film Festival.   On television, for two seasons, he appeared as “Nat Ginzburg” on the highly acclaimed HBO series “OZ”.   He's a well-respected expert in film and theatre history, and he's appeared as a guest programmer and in numerous documentaries for Turner Classic Movies, and he's lectured and conducted master classes at many colleges and universities throughout America.   He's a 2-time MAC award winner, and in 2003, he received a special Drama Desk Award for career achievement as both performer and playwright.  He also received the Flora Roberts Award for Sustained Achievement in the Theatre by the Dramatists' Guild.   He is also the subject of the acclaimed documentary film “The Lady in Question is Charles Busch”.  And his CD, “Charles Busch Live at Feinstein's 54 Below”, is one of the best cabaret albums out there - an absolute joy from beginning to end.     As an author, he wrote an auto-biographical novel in 1995 entitled, “Whores of Lost Atlantis”.   And now, finally, he's released his captivating, witty, insightful and poignant memoir entitled, “Leading Lady: A Memoir of a Most Unusual Boy”, in which he recounts a life as a trailblazer, lived with authenticity and purpose. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Charles Busch, go to:https://www.charlesbusch.com/https://www.facebook.com/charlesbusch.page https://www.instagram.com/chasbusch/  #CharlesBusch   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Wine for Normal People
Ep 429: Marchesi di Barolo - Where Modern Barolo was Created

Wine for Normal People

Although much bigger, more well-known, and a bit fancier than the people I usually speak with, I wanted to make an exception and have the family who owns Marchesi di Barolo on the show so they could explain how the modern style of Barolo was created by the winery. It's much more buttoned up, and less of the normal conversation style I usually do, but it's an essential bit of history that will help fill-in some gaps about Barolo! Marchesi di Barolo in Barolo, photo from Marchesi di Barolo's Facebook page There are a lot of historic wineries and a lot of people in wine claim to have been the first to create a wine or a technique. But this week, the Cantina that invented Barolo as we know it today - Marchesi di Barolo joins. In the mid- to late- 1800s the Marchesi di Barolo focused on the production of dry, ageworthy, complex Nebbiolo was created from a wine that Thomas Jeffereson described as: “As silky as Madeira, as astringent as Bordeaux and as brisk as Champagne”   Thankfully for those of us who love Barolo, the Marchesi had a different style in mind and created the wine as we know it today.   The current owners, the Abbona family, purchased Marchesi di Barolo and today the 6th generation is taking over the winery. Valentina Abbona joins the show to talk about the history of Barolo as a wine, and her family's long history in owning this storied place and making bottles that remain top examples of the wine created here.   Here are the notes: Valentina tells us about what it was like in Barolo in the late 1700s and early 1800s from a wine and lifestyle perspective – the polyculture that existed, and the simple, country lifestyle people led.   Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti and his wife, Juliette, who was of French origin, figured out how to make Barolo a dry wine, consistently. Previously, as it sat in barrels that didn't have temperature control or were placed outdoors, the fermentation did not complete before the weather got cold. The yeast froze and sugar stayed in the wine. When the juice re-commenced fermentation, carbon dioxide stayed in the wine – thus why Thomas Jefferson compared it to Champagne. The Marquesa di Barolo - Giulia di Barolo, photo from the Wine Museum of Barolo   We learn about how the Marchesa Giulia (who changed her name from Juliette to the Italian version of the name), specifically, found interest in the Nebbiolo vine and how she realized her vision for what Nebbiolo could be/the wines it could make of dry wines (using her knowledge of French wines and connections to people who could help).   We discuss how the Marchesa used her contacts to the royal courts of Europe (Piedmont was under the Kingdom of Savoy of France at the time) to popularize the wine, even sending hundreds of barrels to the king in Torino to ensure he could drink the wine daily.   We then turn to Valentina's family, the Abbonas, who have been making esteemed wine in Barolo since the late-1800s as well. When the opportunity to buy the Marchesi di Barolo occurred in 1929, Pietro Abbona, his brother, and his sisters bought the winery and began making small improvements. Davide, Valentina, Ernesto, Anna Abbona, photo from Marchesi di Barolo's Facebook page We discuss the Abbona's tradition of making single vineyard wines since 1973 and a bit about their three properties -- Cannubi, Coste di Rose, and Sarmassa.   Valentina and I have a small debate about the MGA system, which smaller producers find challenging but that some bigger producers of the area, like Marchesi di Barolo, seem to like and find useful.   Valentina talks about some of the other properties the Marchesi di Barolo owns in its 430 acre (186 ha) all over the Langhe and how they manage the land.   After a brief conversation about how long Barolo can age (hint: forever!) we discuss climate change and the future of Barolo and Nebbiolo in light of the challenges the future may bring.

Diary of a Serial Hostess Podcast (private feed for victoriadelamaza@icloud.com)

It is said that guests of guests never bring guests. But guests, in my house, are always welcome to bring guests. It is not the first tier of unknown guests who are the problem, it is the guests of guests that will be an issue. This is a real problem in the world of high-society entertaining. When people begin to hear about the fabulous party you are organizing, those who have not been invited will practically do anything to get invited or will leave town on a very last-minute cruise. While hosting small dinners is not an issue -most sane people are not going to crash a small dinner. But, when, like in the “old” days parties for 40 become the norm, people who are not invited, feel that you are the one that has made the mistake and show up. In this case, graciousness and charm always win and so, give them a drink, ask them to sit in the living room while dessert is served, or pull up a couple of chairs and let them join in. They know that you know and everybody else knows too. If you don't receive a huge bouquet of flowers the next day, strike them from your list forevermore. I am always thrilled to include friend's house guests and new significant others at my parties. If the table is not big enough, I add another table or switch the dinner to a buffet. As a point of good manners, always tell your host ahead of time so there is time to pivot and make everyone feel welcome. But I digress. Let's go back to the subject at hand. I do actually keep records of parties I give, whom I invite, the date, the reason (if any), and what I served. These notes become a reminder of the menus that were hugely successful and the ones that just didn't work. It also reminds me not to serve roast chicken to the same group again, and not to invite the same friends over and over. I don't keep a record of what I wore, which, frankly I think I should, or the wines I served because mostly they are often the same. It is fun to look back at past parties and reminisce. Some party journals have charts for sitting arrangement planning, notes on table decor, flowers, cost, etc… I haven't been able to find one in years, (I had one for each house; my old one was from Smythson) and for my Charleston house, I just use a plain gold notebook… Having a really bad memory, which I do, this notebook keeps me somewhat organized and keeps track of seasonal menus. I also jot down if anything extraordinary happened like firemen coming to the rescue or if I had to change the menu on the fly… My party journal also reminds me of friends that I haven't invited in a while. I never want to upset anyone or be unkind but sometimes people just fall off my radar for no reason at all (as I am sure I do from theirs…). It could be a series of un-meaningful issues or none at all. The point is that they are not on my mind and so, do not make the cut. When this happens, I reach out and invite them to something and start all over again. If friendship and camaraderie are there, it will flourish again. Another way to keep records of guests is a Signature Book. Often set on a table in the entranceway, it works as a collection of autographs and a fun way to look back at the visits of illustrious guests. At my family's cortijo outside Seville, my grandparent's book is still being used at home. The page photographed here is from 1928 when the queen of Spain and her daughters, the infantas, came to visit for lunch and a bullfight in our private bullring. My grandmother mentions the bad weather and that it was a party for 50 people. Edwina Mountbatten and the Marquesa de la Union (among others) had been guests the week before. Since then, my parents have hosted thousands of events and the signature book is a wonderful reminder of fantastic times and long-lasting friendships. I have always felt that when I am invited to someone's house it means much more than just being a frivolous acquaintance. And I feel the same. Once someone makes “the list” it means that I want them in my life and they become part of my rotation of guests. After all, parties are about having a good time with friends, no? A few months ago I chatted with a lady of consequence about guest lists and entertaining and she explained that she really didn't have time to have friends, all she wanted was to collect people to make her dinner parties interesting. Hummmm. I am glad I am not on her rotation! And with that tidbit of information, I leave you today. Imagine if a relative foisted a coat-wearing monkey onto your household? It would be an absolute scene, but despite such an egregious start we just couldn't help but fall under the spell of the ruthlessly kind-hearted Sophy, or the buttoned up, yet sexy, Charles.  We also find time to admire the nap-loving Queen of eggs Marquesa de Villacanas, and the ever-urbane Lord Charlbury. While he may have picked the worst possible time to contract mumps, he took being shot with undeniable aplomb. Miss Wraxton on the other hand, does not escape criticism - but isn't she a real pleasure to dislike? And of course we talk about what may come next for the happy couple, and Sophy's briefly mentioned previous exploits - anyone heard of a missing manuscript telling us about the time she set a family in Belgium to rights? Because we want to read that! ‘Charlbury behaved with the greatest presence of mind imaginable - perfectly cool, and more than a match for such rascals!' ‘Oh Charlbury!' sighed Cecilia, overcome by the thought of such intrepid conduct.  His lordship, soothingly patting her shoulder, could not resist asking: ‘How many of the desperate ruffians did I vanquish, Sophy?' ‘That,' said Sophy, quelling him with a frown, ‘we shall never know!'
