Should Australia celebrate a single day—or an entire month? A libertarian and a totalitarian go head-to-head on national identity, governance, and the future of Australia. In this episode i hosted a fiery debate between Dusty Bogan, a National Libertarian, and Bayden Duke, a National Totalitarian, on the future of Australia Day and whether we should expand it into an entire Australia Month in celebration and in retaliation to the narrative to abolish Australia Day all together. www.DiogoCohea.com diogocohea@gmail.com TIMESTAMPS (0:10:00) - (0:20:00) The Australia Month Proposal Both guests discuss their views on expanding Australia Day into Australia Month. Bayden proposes a structured, government-endorsed approach with historical themes each week. Dusty argues for an organic, grassroots movement that Australians can shape however they want. Debate on whether Australia Month should be inclusive or centered around Anglo-Celtic traditions. (0:20:00) - (0:30:00) Nationalism vs. Libertarianism in Practice Dusty pushes for individualism and free speech, criticizing government overreach. Bayden argues that strong leadership and enforced national unity are necessary for stability. Discussion on how the right-wing movement is divided and whether unity is possible. (0:30:00) - (0:40:00) Indigenous & Multicultural Aspects of Australia Month Bayden suggests a reconciliation-focused segment for Indigenous Australians. Dusty critiques left-wing narratives, arguing that forced inclusivity kills cultural traditions. Debate on whether Australian identity should be open to all or focused on Anglo-European heritage. (0:40:00) - (0:50:00) Political Extremes & Infiltration of Movements Discussion on far-left and far-right extremism in Australian politics. Bayden brings up Order of the Nine Angles (O9A), alleging connections with nationalist groups. Dusty argues that government failures have driven young people to extreme ideologies. (0:50:00) - (0:60:00) Solutions & Closing Thoughts Both guests agree that Australia Month is a positive movement but disagree on its execution. Final thoughts on how the right-wing movement can unify without sacrificing core values. I wrap up the debate, invite listeners to vote on who made the better case, and encourage discussion.

We find out how he's moved through the distances from track to road before making the leap to ultra marathon in 2023. With running a way of life for Dougie this blether allows us to home in on how he's taken his track speed, added endurance and found himself at the top of the tree in the 100k distance. We make no apology of covering his glory run on the North Inch, Perth in detail. We're fascinated with the answers Dougie responds with, particularly a blow by blow account of hie final lap. That'll go down in history that one, high octane stuff! With the aftermath still settling down we get Dougie's thoughts on making the grade for Team GB's 100k squad at the World Champs in India later this year. And should podiums in other ultras feel threatened, is Selman ready to batter some other races? We find out in 'What's next for Dougie' And it's not til the very end of the show that Dougie lets us in on his big secret! What could that be then? The Anglo Celtic Plate eh, you've heard us talk about it tons. It's now nearly upon us and we think it's about time to speak to two of our pals who'll be heavily involved on race day as well as both pre and post race! First, John, freshly off the Jet 2 flight from the Canaries joins Steven to catch-up. With his sun-drenched enhanced warm glow John finds out from Steven how his foray back into racing at the Inverness Half Marathon panned out. Was there PB's to celebrate? How many selfie's did he get asked for? What was the shwank to non-shwank ratio? All the important questions ye might say. Then it's over to Steven to get the lowdown from ACP race organiser Adrian Stott and Team Scotland Manager Debbie Martin-Consani. We delve into a bit of the history of the event first held in 1995 taking a trip down memory lane at some race highlights. Adrian treats us to his top 3 moments in the previous 26 editions of the ACP as well as recalling the late great Don Ritchie's ways of coping with a bad patch during his record breaking efforts at the distance. Debbie recalls her own appearance in the race and reminds us just how tough running 100k on the road is. Brutal is overused, but you guessed it, it's brutal. Relentless type 1 fun! Debbie then gives us some insight into the Scotland team for the 100k as well as focussing on some of the top talent making it's way to Perth on Sunday 3 April from the England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland teams. Adrian and Debbie also let us into their top tips in the 100k open race as it's revealed that the field is every bit as stacked as it could be. With the 50k and 100k open races also on the agenda we're left with a rallying call to get to the North Inch in Perth with your cowbells in tow and make some noise for the athletes taking on the 1.5 mile loop. We're up to high-doh and we think you should be too! It's not too late to sign up! Every collaboration has a backstory. Ours goes back nearly 30 years, when Chris (the older one, jazz musician, former line-cook and nightclub bouncer, some tattoos) and Tom (the slightly younger one, classical musician, serial migrant, no tattoos) worked together at WFIU, Indiana University Public Radio. Both of us were in grad school at Indiana at the time, Chris in jazz and musicology and Tom in music performance. In radio those were the old days. We worked with reel-to-reel tape and rudimentary hard-wired networks on the studio computers, pulling shifts late nights and early mornings for a listening audience scattered through the southern Indiana hills. And then we went our separate ways: Chris to start his academic career in Texas, Tom to Germany to work as a musician before returning to the US for a PhD in musicology at Cornell. Fast forward fifteen years: we are both in academia, two American scholars on divergent paths. Chris is at Texas Tech building a Vernacular Music Center and much else besides. Tom has landed in Southampton in the UK, beginning to move from pretty old-fashioned art music (ask him about Mozart and he'll tell you a lot of things you didn't know people even knew) to global music history. Fast forward another ten years to the summer of 2018. Chris has just finished the second of two books about American vernaculars, and Tom is wrapping up a book about European experiences of Chinese music around 1800 and starting a new project about jazz and AI. Over the years we'd seen each other at conferences in strange airless hotels. You could count on us (the big guy with the tattoos and the bookish Mozart scholar living as a migrant in Britain) to regale anyone who would listen with stories about small-town radio in the good old days, where you knew your audience because some of them would call you on the control room phone just to talk, and the reel-to-reel machines sometimes did terrible things to you on air. And, curiously enough, we realize that our paths are beginning to align: Chris is working on “history from below,” in music and dance soundscapes across the Americas, and Tom is working in material and social history using soundscapes of global imperial encounter and modern technology.Chris has an idea. Why don't we two surprise people (because despite our shared history, from the outside we seem an unlikely duo in academia, where everyone is trapped in narrow specialties) and do a thing. We're both all-in on global history and empire, on music and what it means in the world. We feel like we need to say something in times of environmental and political crisis. So...an essay collection? Maybe a symposium? You could feel our enthusiasm waning even as one of us suggested these. As energizing as it can be to spend time in a room full of really cool colleagues, neither of us wanted the thing to be that. Instead, after decades in academia, both of us were looking for something more immediate, the kind of experience we know from the classroom and yes, from the old days on the radio. We talk it over some, and agree to meet in England next time Chris is traveling in Europe. You'll have to listen to the episode to get the rest of the story. It didn't take long for us to settle on an ambitious project: a music history book for non-academic readers. And a podcast, a medium Tom and Chris, Old Radio Guys, were just beginning to discover. A few emails later we had found our producer, Tom's sister Tatiana Irvine, and her production company, Seedpod Sound. And here we are.Key PointsHow we came to be writing a book together nearly 30 years after first working at the same public radio station in small-town Indiana (or “How a global history of imperial encounter, across five centuries, was born in the studios of a small public radio station in southern Indiana, 30 years ago”)What it's like to come up with an ambitious joint project in a business that favors lone working (or “Getting our brains, and those of our colleagues and managers, around the idea of an international collaboration across time zones and disciplines--in the midst of a global pandemic.”)What excites us about podcasting as a medium: its immediacy and the possibility of two-way communication with the audience (or “How podcasting engages and unites us through shared personal and scholarly goals: radio skills, expertise in sound as both meaning and technology, a sense of history, and an urgent desire to contribute to global efforts to fight environmental destruction”)How we want to structure the podcast around three themes: labor, energy and data (or “Why ‘labor'; why ‘energy'; why ‘data'? What are the human, ecological, cultural, and historical stories that brought us to this moment?”)Why we want to tell bold new stories about voices most music historians miss (or “The untold stories, the silenced voices, the unseen or unrecognized encounters between people, places, eras, and experience--between labor, energy, and data--for which we seek to create new spaces for encounter and understanding.”)ResourcesTom Irvine's Listening to China: Sound and the Sino-Western Encounter, 1770-1839 is about the shifting responses of Western travellers, musicians, philosophers, and diplomats to China and its soundscapes around 1800, and how these responses shaped their sense of what it meant to be “Western.”Dreams of Germany: Musical Imaginaries from the Concert Hall to the Dance Floor, edited by Tom Irvine and the Southampton historian Neil Gregor, explores how Germans reacted in music to the most significant developments of the twentieth century, including technological advances, fascism, and war on an unprecedented scale, and how the world responded to German music in return. The introduction and Tom's chapter on how ideas of “Germanness” shaped the British composer Hubert Parry's heavily racialized approach to music history are available for free on the Berghan Books website.Chris Smith's The Creolization of American Culture: William Sydney Mount and the Roots of Blackface Minstrelsy uses the artworks of painter and musician William Sidney Mount (born in Setauket, Long Island in 1807) as a lens through which to recover the earliest roots of the Black-white cultural exchange that gave birth to the street musics that were the roots of the “Creole Synthesis” of African and Anglo-Celtic sound and movement that lies at the heart of American music.Chris Smith's Dancing Revolution: Bodies, Space, and Sound in American Cultural History is a study of 400 years of movement and noise--street dance and "rough music"--as tools by which minoritized peoples, across many moments in the history of the Americas, have sought to create freedom “from below.”All of the books mentioned in the episode can be found in our Sounding History Goodreads discussion group. In Australia, there are more men in senior leadership positions named John than there are women. It gets worse. An analysis of 100 ASX directors in 2015 found that only two women and 28 men were of a culturally diverse background. Anglo-Celtic men, on the other hand, numbered 64. It’s a bleak reflection of the leadership landscape in Australia, where culturally diverse women and men have to work harder than their Anglo-Saxon counterparts when it comes to breaking into senior leadership roles. Discussing these discrepancies is Dimitria Groutsis, who will explore how diversity can increase productivity and creativity and the simple steps we can take to increase leadership diversity.

We like to think of Australia as a multicultural and inclusive nation. But a new report, 'Leading for change: A blueprint for cultural diversity and inclusive leadership revisited', reveals that despite the cultural diversity of Australia's population, the majority of leadership in business, politics, government and higher education remains overwhelmingly Anglo-Celtic or European. Why? How does this impact Australia's future? How might it affect the Australia-China relationship? What can be done about it? Philipp Ivanov, CEO of the Asia Society Australia, joins James Laurenceson, Deputy Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI) at the University of Technology Sydney to discuss the report's findings, and how Australia might achieve more culturally diverse leadership.

John and Helen Haynes on their wedding day in 1962. John, a Protestant, was cut out of three wills after marrying Helen, a Catholic. Siobhan McHugh, Author providedThese days, when Australians of Irish Catholic descent have occupied the highest positions in the land, it may seem hollow to talk of them as marginalised. But right up to the 1970s the Catholic-Protestant divide was deeply entrenched – with painful and often lasting social consequences for those who dared to marry across it. Siobhan McHugh, a journalism academic and oral historian, captured some of those experiences in interviews we’re showcasing on this month’s episode of Trust Me, I’m An Expert – a podcast where academic experts surprise, delight and inform us with their research. Here’s a teaser: Some of the 50 oral histories collected by Siobhan McHugh. Siobhan McHugh, Author provided1.99 MB (download) Among the stories McHugh collected was the tale of Susan Timmins. Her parents, Julia and Errol, married despite their different religious backgrounds. After Julia died in childbirth, neither side of the family helped Errol and he subsequently put Susan and her brother into an orphanage. Julia O'Brien and Errol White, who were in a ‘mixed marriage’. Susan Timmins, Author provided In this episode, McHugh explains what drove her to unearth these stories and how they fit into broader debates about race, class and sectarianism in Australian society. “It’s actually a myth that there was once this sort of polite and white Australia before the multicultural kind of Australia that we have now. Actually, this period is misrepresented by the term Anglo-Celtic, which suggests there was a cosy community of British and Irish at the time,” she said. “That is actually absolutely the opposite of what the truth was. The truth was that there was this over 70% Protestant majority and about 23% Catholic minority – and the minority of Irish Catholics were deliberately kept as an underclass.” Trust Me, I’m An Expert is out at the start of every month. We do not really know what the future holds for Tsaloumas’ work. The fact, however, remains that with only one collection of poems, this peculiar Greek-Australian poet, a voice from the “outside”, managed to put not only Greek-Australian but also migrant and multicultural poetry on the map, marking a new phase in Australian literature, which up until then, was predominantly Anglo-Celtic.
