They talk about coming from very different -- parentally-supported versus culturally nonexistent -- standup traditions, the stereotypes that still hound them, and the future (or perhaps lack thereof) of our democracy. Also, a very special Thanksgiving edition of The Good, The Bad, and The WTF.

Joe Wong is a LA based musician, film and tv composer, producer, and podcaster. His newest record, Mere Survival, is a lush orchestral psychedelic pop odyssey laden with timeless song structure and stacked with the heaviest of heavy hitting guest musicians (Mary Timony, Nate Mendel, Money Mark, Jim Keltner and Matt Cameron, to name of few).  Joe (Wong) shares the motivation behind this realistic, yet despair rich record, and how this stage in his career naturally led to its completion. The Joe's discuss the absurdity of the all-star cast of contributors and why Joe Wong sees making a record as an innately social experience. The two exchange their gleaned wisdom they've absorbed from Buzz Osborne, Joe (Wong) tells us why he's getting his podcast The Trap Set up and running again and we hear his plans for upcoming performances of Mere Survival. Hello and welcome to the Talkhouse Podcast, I'm Josh Modell. On this week's episode we've got a pair of friends who, as you'll hear, have provided emotional support and advice to each other throughout interesting, winding careers over the past couple of decades; Mary Timony and Joe Wong. Timony is probably best known as the leader of the ‘90s indie-rock band Helium, but her catalog goes far beyond it. Prior to Helium, Timony came up in the DC punk scene as part of the band Autoclave, and after she's been part of Wild Flag with members of Sleater-Kinney, fronted a band called Ex Hex, and released records under her own name. That's mostly why we're here today, because Timony is about to release her first solo record in 15 years, and it's fantastic. It's called Untame the Tiger, and it picks up on some of the psych elements that Timony has wrangled in the past—and even includes a guest appearance by the former drummer of Fairport Convention, Dave Mattacks, as you'll hear in this chat. Untame the Tiger was also produced in part by today's other guest, Joe Wong. It comes out February 23, but check out the song “Dominoes” right here. As I mentioned, today's other guest is Joe Wong, who grew up in Milwaukee and played in indie-rock bands before finding his creative path in two amazing ways: as a composer for TV and film and as a podcast host. He's written music for the likes of Russian Doll and Master of None, and he helms the popular podcast The Trap Set, which originated as a way to spotlight his favorite drummers, but has since expanded into deep and incredible conversations with all kinds of creative folks. But a few years back, partly at the urging of his friend Mary Timony, Wong began writing songs for himself rather than for other people's scores. He just released his second album, Mere Survival, and while it still has late-'60s big-pop vibes, it gets even bigger and weirder than his first. It features not only Timony, but also Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron, among other guests. Check out the title track from Mere Survival right here. This conversation took place shortly after two big release shows for Mere Survival for which Wong gathered a 20-piece band, so you'll hear a bit about that, as well as some thoughts on songwriting itself. Wong and Timony also get deep on how their parents' illnesses brought them together, about self-sabotage and perfectionism, and much more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Mary TImony and Joe Wong for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Mary Timony is a singer, songwriter, and guitar wizard from Washington DC. For the past 30 years she has fronted, founded, toured, and recorded with such celebrated and influential bands as Autoclave, Helium, Ex Hex and Wild Flag. Her fifth solo release, Untame The Tiger (out February 23 via Merge) is a beautifully elaborate guitar pop, riff driven record that touches on familial loss, emotional freedom and psychic shift.   In this episode Mary tells us how an onslaught of simultaneous dramatic experiences changed her perspective personally and artistically and how music brought her closer to her ailing father. She shares her experience of recording with the great Dave Mattacks, mixing with Dave Fridmann and gives some in-sight into the process of co-producing with longtime friend, Joe Wong.   We also hear about her first punk show, how she avoids “rote playing” and shares the funny and harsh experience that led her to quitting the viola.  We hear a few tunes and Mary tells us not one, but three hilarious tour stories. What is it like to take part in classes at the University of Toronto from your home in southern Brazil? How does it feel, as a student from Cameroon, to witness anti-Black racism in North America? The New Normal, a podcast hosted by Professor Maydianne Andrade, vice-dean faculty affairs, equity and success, at U of T Scarborough and a Canada Research Chair in Integrative Behavioural Ecology, explores how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our daily lives. In episode 11, Andrade turns the microphone over to guest host Joe Wong, the Ralph and Roz Halbert professor of innovation at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, and U of T's interim vice-president, international. Wong is joined by three students: Atharv Agrawal, from Mumbai, India, Ana Meleti from Londrina, Brazil and Lesley Sipaka, originally from Cameroon – as they reflect on life during the pandemic, being inspired by those who stand against anti-Black racism and finding ways to have fun. “I'm living the Canadian dream,” says Agrawal. “It's the American dream plus ... a little bit of humanity. And more maple syrup.” The New Normal is created in collaboration with a University of Toronto Communications team led by Lisa Lightbourn. He's an incredibly busy guy: he hosts the Trap Set, a weekly interview podcast he’s helmed since 2015, where he sits down with artists like Mix Master Mike, Sharon Van Etten, Jim Keltner, Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, among many others. He also makes music for film in TV—you’ve probably heard his work on Master of None, Russian Doll, Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Midnight Gospel.    Joe has long played music with artists like Mary Timony of Helium and Marnie Stern, but recently, he released his debut solo long player, Nite Creatures. Produced by Timony, who also plays on it, it finds him joined by members of Flaming Lips, War on Drugs, and that dog. for a set of deeply cinematic psychedelic pop, which brings to mind the mystical lushness of Scott Walker, the Zombies, and Pink Floyd. One of the albums best songs “Dreams Wash Away” was featured in Duncan Trussel’s Midnight Gospel finale on Netflix—one of the most affecting things you’ll see all year, and like that episode, Nite Creatures grapples with mortality and existential dread, but remains vivid, colorful, and beautiful.

Balancing his work as a tv composer, drummer, and podcaster is no easy feat but Joe Wong masters it with grace. We loved getting to chat with him about how his creative process thrives within the framework of films and in the studio, where he created his first solo project with the production help of his good friend Mary Timony. Joe reminded us that though we can learn by listening to others, comparison is the thief of joy so we should all embrace our singular creative visions. Even if you don't know who Joe Wong is, you're almost certainly aware of his work. The Los Angeles-based composer and producer can be heard on television shows like Russian Doll, Ugly Delicious, Master of None and Superjail, as well as films like To All The Boys I've Loved Before and Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss. He also co-produced Fred Armisen's Netflix special, Standup For Drummers. Beyond his on-screen efforts, Wong also interviews some of the world's most accomplished percussionists on The Trap Set — an excellent drummer-focused podcast that has released more than 230 episodes. On top of all that work in a variety of mediums, Wong continues to write and record his own music. While back in his hometown of Milwaukee over Thanksgiving, Wong met up with My First Band host Tyler Maas to talk about his eclectic artistic résumé that spans the realms of television, film, podcasting and live performance. The conversation also made its way to Wong's interest in drumming during adolescence, his formative high school and college bands and his time living in a Riverwest house venue that would later be featured on an episode of Hoarders. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, Wong also talked about his foray into the interesting world of TV and film scoring. Eric Miller from Yonah Mountain vineyards visited the studio and brought a whole bunch of wine with him. As we talk about in the episode, we tried to do a similar episode a couple years ago, but the final product was nowhere near even our incredibly low standards. This time we pulled it off, and we learned a lot about grape juice. I thought about breaking this up into two parts, but it's really best as one coniguous conversation, even if it takes you a week to listen to. Finally, this might be the (unintentionally) lip-smackingest, mouth noisiest episode we've ever done (RUSS). Some show notes: 9:30(ish) - we finally get into the wine and start with Sauvignon Blancses. 17:30 - we actually move toward the second wine, but it takes until ... 19:20 - a couple of Chardonnays! ~30:00 - lol a 12 minute song 44:20 - plug for The Trap Set with Joe Wong!!45:25 - only six bottles of red left lolol, starting with Genesis 9 (Bordeaux blend) 52:30 - Genesis 10(!!!) 1:03:15 - Genesis X Classic (what even is this?) 1:05:40 - Andy Capp's snack things 1:12:50 - Katherine's Cabernet (o god) 1:15:25 - listener question from @gvonk, "If animals could talk, which would be the best conversationalists?" This ends up taking a ... really long time. 1:21:48 - Russ remarks that I don't edit these. This took me a week to edit. 1:22:10 - Totem Classic ("infused" with brettanomyces), lol jk 1:22:48 - "platently" 1:26:35 - We finally get around to the Totem Classic (despite being entirely dead at this point) 1:32:44 - "You're nailing the head right over the nail." What a mess. So much fun.

We would love to introduce the talented, creative and unique talent, Michael Tow from TRIBECA and AT&T Award winning film, “Lucky Grandma,” which is set tot make it's debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in late April/early May. Michael, who plays the role of, “Little Handsome,” is a low level gang member, hit man who doesn't feel pain or has any remorse in trying to chase, track down and capture “lucky grandma.” Michael classifies his role in this film, along with his colleague (“gang member”) the “Marv and Harry” from the hit film, “Home Alone,” so they aren't the smartest hit men in the world. This comedy, drama film is set to make its mark at the Tribeca Film Festival this year. Besides starring in this TRIBECA film, Michael has been in the entertainment industry for quite some time, you may recognize I'm from projects like, BLINDSPOT on NBC, where he plays the character of Del Toro, a ruthless, hacker for hire who is hired by Madeline Burke. Del Toro was hired to hack into and take down a plane. He has been the center of the story line spanning for over 6 episodes this past season. Michaels other credits include films, Slender Man, The Sea of Trees, R.I.P.D. to just name a few and some Television that include, DareDevil, Royal Pain, MacGyvr, etc. With the the asian culture making waves in the industry, Michael is someone to watch out for…. In a partnership with AT&T, The Tribeca Film Festival, held its second annual, "Untold Stores" program, where many directors, producers and writers pitch their scripts to a panel for a chance to win $1 million dollars towards their film, with a year to make it come to life. Some of the panel consisted of directors, writers and producers from, Dallas Buyers Club, Birdman, Precious, Broad City, to just name a few. The award and funds went to the script/creators of, Lucky Grandma, Sasie Sealy and Angela Cheng. Lucky Grandma is about an ornery Chinese grandmother living n NYC's Chinatown with a small-time gambling habit. Being really down on her luck, the grandma learns from a fortune teller that “a most auspicious day” is on the horizon. The grandmother takes fate and it turns out to be a a chase of a lifetime and lands on the wrong side of the tracks, in the middle of a Chinese gang war. The creators took their own featured home videos and clips of their Chinese mothers to explain the concepts, they say its a homage of amazing women, but explain that grandmas of this decent (American and Chinese) are relatable and so specific. Michael also owns his own production company called, Tow Arboleda Films, who are AWARD WINNING filmmakers. Last year, Michael and his co-producing partner won 2 Telly Award for their shorts film, Christmas Forward. His production company started 2 years ago making social justice short films and videos (14 films/videos to date) usually responding to or parodying Asian American events in the news. I can't image it!Esther:Don't look so surprised! What i mentioned would not appear off-color jokes unless in the nightclubs.Mute:Oh!I get it ,just like “different places, different customs.”Ester:Yeah,a vivid metaphor! If you are real interested in it.Dayo Wong's show is a good choice. He localized the stand-up comedy successfully. You could experience such kind of foreign cultures's essence in our familiar language environment.History:Another well-known stand-up comedian flashed on me!Mute:I guess he is Joe Wong.History:Bingo!....Indeed.Literally,I appreciate his performance very much.Mute:So can you introduce him to us?History:Of course,he was born in Ji Lin,and graduated from Ji Lin University.Esther:Ha,he is also from north east.History:Sure, but he has a different way to humor.Unique language rhythm and way of thinking is his feature. He is humorous and introverted, but what impressed me most is that he is always telling something new with an ice face.Mute::Why is 6 afraid of 7?Because 7.8.9,like this?Esther:That's funny.History:Yeah, you are lively.Mute:But what program did he perform?History:Like《Is It Ture》,and it's worth mentioning that he was the champion of American comedy festival in 2010.Esther:Cool,I really wanna watch his performance now.History:Ok,I'll play a clip." Poker Face 插曲 2 黄西播放片段 Mute:Really nice.Esther:He makes people feel pleasant.History:And I have looked through his sina blog which is all about helping others.I think he is really a warm heart people.Esther:Well,I appreciate him now. So,what about you, Mute? You said you nearly watch America's talk show on a daily basis.I guess you must know American humor very well.Mute: What about this one? What did the mermaid wear to her math class? The answer is an algae-bra. (LOL) What? It's not funny?History: Humm, what is the point? Mute: OK, look. Algae-bra and algebra have the same pronunciation but they are referring to quite different things. Algae-bra (laughing) is a kind of bra with algae, while algebra is a subject. Is that clear now?Esther: Well, if you don't explain for us, that's quite difficult to catch the point of your joke.Mute: I have to say, you are right. From the angle of the Chinese, you almost cannot know what I am saying. But if you step in the side of English, you will find it's ridiculous.History: So, is this the American humor that you talked about?Mute: Yes, it is. And this is a kind of wordplay humor which means one word with two meanings. Very typical in American humor.Esther: I don't feel good about this, the Americans always have small talk like this?Mute: Oh, it's fine. You just still haven't used it. If you can master it, you will always enjoy it. And there is a nice talk show that I wanna recommend to you which is my favorite talk show.History: What is it? Weather forecast? (Laughing)Mute: What……. Couse not. It's Ellen Show!" Poker Face 插曲3 艾伦秀播放片段 "Mute: What do you guys think?Esther: oh…..Have to say it is very interesting. So this woman here is Ellen?Mute: Couse! Ellen DeGeneres who is born in Metairie Louisiana. At the age of 13, her parents divorced, and Ellen moved to New Orleans with her mother. She worked as a waitress and saleswoman, after that, she finally decided to use her sense of humor to become a comedian.History: Wow, her story is so inspirational. But ,why I always feel the American humor is so funny like you say.Mute: Well, maybe you have a quite high laughing point. All right, I have to admit it, this kind of humor is not be accepted by everyone. Especially we are Chinese, so it will harder for us to understand it. I think this is what it called the Cultural difference. The different places, different customs.History: Good point!Anyway, there is no border between art as well as the art of humor." "垫乐:Poker Face 插曲 4 The Next Expisode Mute:Ok,shall we look back what we learnt today? And today,we talked about talk show and stand-up comedy. And if you wanted more about American humor, why not try the Ellen Show?Esther:Wait, have we forgotten another one?History:Of course. This is Huang Xi.And please visit his sina blog.Mute:After all this,I think you guys got my jokes,right?Esther:Ha.Algae-bra!History:Seven,eight,nine!Mute:Right.Finally,it is time to finish our funny program. If you enjoy our program,do visit our WeChat, official account,时代之声radio.我是播音刘博This is Mute.See you on the other side.History:VOE世界说欢迎你,感谢制作I ris,我是播音何嘉欣History.Look before you leap.Esther:我是播音张依雪,this is Esther.Keep the heart with all diligence;for out of it are the issues of life.Mute,History,Esther:Bye bye~" 结束曲 Not Afraid 节目监制:苗世钰编辑:刘博 张依雪 何嘉欣播音:刘博 张依雪 何嘉欣 制作:Arris

Joe Wong, a political scientist at the Munk School of Global Affairs, discusses how the current state of global poverty is shifting: while there are fewer poor people in the world today than there were 25 years ago, there are more poor people from countries that we don’t ordinarily consider to be poor. In fact, the majority of the world’s poorest of the poor are living in middle income countries. But it’s not all bad news. There’s an exciting program that is bringing financial aid to the poorest people in the poorest regions of Brazil, for example. Joe and a group of his undergraduate students recently travelled to Brazil to conduct research to determine how this program, called Bolsa Familia, works. And what the rest of the world can learn from it. Click here for a full transcript: http://alumni.artsci.utoronto.ca/planet-artsci-episode-12-changing-face-global-poverty-transcript/ Connect with us!
