Episode Summary Sharon "Rocky" Roggio is my special guest - the producer and director of the award-winning documentary "1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture." This film explores the profound impact of a mistaken biblical translation of the word "homosexual" and its consequences on culture, religion, and the LGBTQ community. Rocky shares her personal journey as a Christian lesbian, discussing her efforts to seek acceptance and understanding from her father, a church pastor. Through these conversations, listeners gain insight into Rocky's experiences and the broader implications of this pivotal mistranslation.About Sharon "Rocky" Roggio1946's director, Sharon “Rocky” Roggio is no stranger to the implications of a life completely affected by the predominant modern interpretations of the Bible. Growing up lesbian in a Christian household, with a pastor for a father, has prepared her for this expansive undertaking. Rocky's experience, of anti-gay biblical teachings, has been incredibly traumatic. She is a strong voice, among the growing chorus of LGBTQIA+ Christians who want to cure the world of this damaging narrative. Once Roggio learned of Kathy and Ed's work, she was compelled to tell this story. This film is part of her attempts to reconcile a relationship with her family and begin to heal.Sharon “Rocky” Roggio  is an multi award-winning film producer and director living in Los Angeles, CA. She has been a member of three IATSE unions nationwide and has a Bachelor's degree in Communications with a focus in Radio, Television and Film Her background includes large budget physical production on award winning shows and films such as House of Cards, Parks and Recreation, With Bob and David, Whip It and Red Dawn.   In 2016, Roggio associate produced and production designed GOOK, a feature film that premiered at Sundance in 2017 and Won the Audience Award in the Next Category.   In 2018 when she heard about the 1946 mistranslation in the Bible, Roggio immediately quit all her other endeavors and has focused all her time, money, and resources on producing and creating this documentary. 1946 is Roggio's directorial debut.About 1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture is a feature documentary that follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a grave mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. It chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors, including the personal stories of the film's creators, 1946 is at once challenging, enlightening, and inspiring.  Watch the trailer.Watch the full feature film today.https://www.1946themovie.com/1946 Roadtrip Across America - We are THRILLED to announce our plan to utilize the award-winning documentary, 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture, as a tool for civic engagement and to drive voter registration for the 2024 election. Our mission is to organize 14 free public conferences in US cities impacted by extremist ideologies. The primary objective of these assemblies is to activate the audience to vote as we advocate for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, standing up for democracy and promoting equality for everyone. Sade gets upset and goes to bed early, which is the kiss of death in the Gook household. Mr. Gumpox Offers Sade a Stall: Vic is upset because Sade plans on selling of some of his "lodge junk." We are grateful to welcome back to the show, director Justin Chon to talk about his latest film Blue Bayou. The last time we talked with Justin, was back at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 when he screened the sister/brother drama Ms. Purple. Blue Bayou takes on the conversations around immigration, adoption, police brutality, racism, facing death and interracial marriage - all set in the beautiful landscape of one of our favorite places, New Orleans. Justin and Erin talk about the heavy topics of this film as well as why he landed on using New Orleans as the backdrop to the story, adoption as a capitalistic transaction, why he prefers the Linda Ronstadt version of Blue Bayou , and more. Blue Bayou  is out now in a theater near you. We hope that you will go out and support Korean American independent film and watch Justin's previous work - Gook  and Ms. Purple. How does the term “Anti-Asian Racism” inhibit a more complete understanding of racism and white supremacy? This episode suggests that we cease intense advocacy and support for a group in question well after they have been hurt, or worse, killed. Activism should not and cannot persist in the forms of boom and bust cycles. It shouldn't be a summer of #BLM and a few weeks of #StopAnti-Asian Racism, but a continuous struggle to liberate and fight for all parties who are dehumanized by various oppressive forces. We need to supplant reactionary sloganeering with productive work -- such that assists Asian-Americans, Black people, or anyone who is presently/historically oppressed without waiting for something to these marginal communities first. "Gook" director Justin Chon returns this year to Sundance with a stunning Korean-American story about two siblings reuniting as their father's health fails. "Ms. Purple" is moody, complex, and has no easy answers. The film focuses on the daughter, Kasie (Tiffany Chu) who works as an escort at karaoke clubs in LA's Koreatown. She struggles to make ends meet as she is taking on the care of her vegetative father at home. She's left in dire straights as the in-home nurse she hired quits. She reaches out to her estranged older brother, Carey (Teddy Lee). Carey left their home as a teenager but ultimately decides to come help Kasie care for their father. Through series of flashbacks we see how the family fell apart. And we also see the difficult decisions Kasie has had to make in order to provide care for her father. Throughout it all we see redemption, fury, forgiveness, grief, and acceptance beautiful portrayed in a film that will stay with you long after you see it. In Justin Chon’s feature film GOOK is a dramedy about Eli and Daniel, two Korean American brothers, who own a struggling shoe store and their unique and unlikely friendship with Kamilla, an 11-year old African American girl. The film opens with Eli scoring a stash of fresh sneakers as his golden ticket to get out of debt and fix his biggest problem: keeping his dad’s shoe store open. Against her brother Keith’s warnings, Kamilla ditches school again to help out at the shoe store, her mother’s former workplace. Everything is going as planned until Kamilla accidentally reveals a gifted pair of expensive sneakers to Keith. Keith realizes Kamilla has been going to the shoe store. Out of anger towards Eli and Daniel he uses this opportunity as revenge and plans to steal all the shoes. Eli must make the ultimate decision for the future of the store and the people he loves. With the chaos of the LA Riots moving towards them, the trio are forced to defend their store against Keith while contemplating the future of their own personal dreams and the true meaning of family. Director, Writer and Executive Producer Justin Chon joins us for a conversation on his powerful, soul searching film about race, friendship, and family. Gung fu translated means: discipline and training toward the mastery of some skill. It is applied to martial arts but it can be applied to anything. Ultimately, Gung fu is a pathway toward mastery and a deeper understanding of yourself and life. Yin Yang is the basic structure of Gung fu. This is expressed with the Law of Harmony: “One should be in harmony within and not rebellion against the strength and force of opposition.” “The law of harmony thus fits in with the law of non-interference with nature, which teaches a Gung fu man to forget himself and follow his opponent. He does not move ahead but responds. So the basic idea is to defeat the opponent by yielding to him and using his own strength against him.” “No-mindedness is not a blank mind that excludes emotions, nor is it simply a calm or quiet mind. It is the “non-graspiness” of the mind that constitutes the principle of no-mindedness. A Gung fu man employs his mind as a mirror, it grasps nothing, it refuses nothing, it receives but does not keep.” “Concentration in Gung fu does not have the usual sense of restricting the attention to a single sense object. It is simply a quiet awareness of whatever happens to be here and now. The mind is present everywhere because it is nowhere attached to any particular object and it can remain present because even when relating to this or that it does not cling to it.” If you have such artistry and mastery then in you are in the flow. The attainment of self-mastery or connectedness is grown through the daily practice of life. We can all be artists of our own lives, through our discipline, practice, and training at being a human being, you can gain freedom and transformation. “There are three stages in the cultivation of Gung fu: the primitive stage, the stage of art, and the stage of artlessness.” “Remember that man created method and method did not create man. You yourself are expressing the technique, you’re not doing or following the technique.” Gung fu is anything you practice with effort, discipline, harmony, and humility, towards mastery. “True mastery stems from mastery of oneself. The ability developed through self-discipline, to be calm, fully aware, and completely in tune with oneself and the surroundings. Then, and only then, can a person know himself.” Take Action: What is your Gung fu? What is it that you are actively working on mastering? It doesn’t have to be a physical skill, it’s a skill that is natural to you and should excite you and bring you joy. #AAHA (Awesome Asians and Hapas) This week our #AAHA is Korean-American filmmaker and actor Justin Chon. He just premiered his film “Gook” at Sundance. It’s a film about living through the LA riots in the 90’s and his family’s experience owning a market that was looted. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the riots and Justin wanted to create a film about the Korean American experience during that time. About half of all the damage caused by the LA riots were to Korean businesses. The police weren’t coming to help them so the shop owners had to defend the stores themselves. Justin raised money through Kickstarter, and actually raised double what he asked, which showed him that people really wanted this story told. We think it’s great that you’re creating your own projects, Justin--you’re awesome! #BruceLeeMoment This week’s #BruceLeeMoment excerpt comes from Matthew R.: “I suffer from PTSD, OCD, & Social Anxiety from the trauma of hearing of [my father’s] death and other traumas I experienced in my life. I have always been a fan of your dad and his outlook on life. I recently started listening to the podcast and love it. It is very therapeutic for me. A quote, and the story behind it, of his that has recently made a big impact on my life is, "When life gives you obstacles you must summon the courage and walk on!"
