Savannah Seydel, vice president of sustainability and impact at Better Earth, a maker of compostable tableware and food service packaging, is on a mission to remove petroleum-based plastics and PFAS-treated fiber from our food packaging choices. Food packaging and service ware are two of the largest sources of plastic pollution. The rise of compostable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics could change the character of food service materials, making restaurants, cafeterias, and food delivery packaging part of the circular economy, where materials flow from nature to human use and back to nature again. Better Earth makes a wide range of hot and cold food packaging using renewable, sustainably grown fiber and PLA, an industrially compostable bio-plastic — this packaging now represents about 8% of the food service industry.Better Earth sells packaging to businesses, not consumers. The company has established an in-house design studio that creates packaging and circular services. For example, they've partnered with farmers in their Atlanta office to source fiber from switchgrass and other cover crops, which provides new revenue streams to support family farms. Better Earth also works to develop collection programs that get recovered packaging and food waste into the composting system and, ultimately, back to the farms where it can nourish the soil. Savannah describes their Field to Food to Field strategy as “borrowing biological resources and putting them back again.” You can learn more about Better Earth at https://becompostable.com/

The food industry generates a substantial portion of not only food waste, but also packaging waste. In the United States alone, the food and beverage sector accounts for approximately 23% of all packaging waste. Plastic is the most widely used material for food packaging, representing around 40% of total plastic usage, which comes with several challenges, including environmental pollution, resource depletion, and health concerns. Therefore, there is a growing movement to reduce the use of plastic in food packaging and promote more sustainable and circular packaging solutions, such as compostable plastics, paper-based packaging, and reusable containers. Better Earth is a Georgia-based company committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship through composting. Its main goal is to create more sustainable systems by providing 100% plant-based products and services to customers all around the world. Through the distribution of zero-waste packaging solutions, Better Earth is providing the ability to revitalize, regenerate and replenish local economies, while supporting carbon sequestering and addressing public health concerns all around. This starts in the fields where the plants are grown, to the food service establishments where the products are used, and then back to the fields where they compost the materials and start the entire process over—creating a closed loop, zero-waste system. Join this episode of RENEWables and meet VP of Sustainability at Better Earth, Savannah Seydel to discover more about composting, plant-based packaging, and how food waste reduction and resource efficiency improvements can have significant economic, social, and environmental benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving natural resources, and improving food security.
Focusing on quality vs quantity could be the biggest problem in any person and organization. There are always exceptions but listen to the CEO of Better Earth's reasoning to help change your perspective.Quality vs Quantity must be understood before starting anything.
In the 1st interview, we sit down with Zain Jan, our host's business partner, mentor, and close friend.Shaun sits down with Zain as we are taken through the entire story of zain as a young kid, and the difficulties he and his family faced with them being immigrants and having little to nothing in the first decade of his life.Zain talks through his troubled childhood, getting around the wrong crowd, and being tired of having money be at the core of most difficulties. After a few traumatic family events, dropping out of college, selling Door to Door, and using his tenacious mentality to find success in sales and business early on, Zain has now become a public figure as the co-founder and CEO of Better Earth, the founder and CEO of Solar CEO's (a solar consulting business that helps hundreds of solar business owners scale their businesses through marketing), and one of the most respected executives in the residential solar industry.Zain embodies the intention of this podcast by mastering the mindset of viewing his challenges & failures as inspiration to get up, and take more action to live a successful life.
In the introduction episode, we will be introducing the founder and host of the show, Shaun Sharabi.Shaun is the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer serving as the right hand to the CEO of Better Earth, Inc — the fastest full-scale residential solar sales, marketing, installation, and service business. After 2.5 years, Better Earth is pacing as a $120M company with over 800 people in 2022.On this episode, Shaun shares the following:Pieces about his family background and childhood.Using door-to-door sales to catapult his growth and being the action that led to his success today. How the creation of this show came about.Shaun's curiosity has been the driving force behind this show as he aims to educate the rest of the world to help inspire action.
Action in business is crucial. Zain Jan, CEO of Better Earth goes over the mindset he teaches and drives home in all of his sales reps. The secret when starting is to focus on this to get unstuck. Go all-in on one thing and take note of what happens. Speed and quantity will lead to better solutions and a better product.
This is something Zain Jan implemented immediately in his business journey. This plays a bigger role than we think.

Welcome to Botched: A D&D Podcast! After having...aided in the destruction of Better Earth...we now have no more Earths. Well, it's just a burning husk, but I guess that counts for something? Before the group leaves they get to witness the immediate aftermath. It turns out, most other races in the galaxy weren't the biggest fans of the Muricans. The crew is feeling altruistic, so they decide to help out a school bus of kids fleeing the destruction. I'm sure they have no ulterior motives at all. What would a group of murderous space faring monsters want with a group of children? Will anyone come to the defense of the Muricans? Where will the crew go next? Will Perkins ever make a friend? Welcome to Botched: A D&D Podcast! The group narrowly avoided an orbital bombardment from the Not'n'avi. Also, it seems that they are not particularly pleased with Joran. I'm sure that won't come up later or anything. However, we now discover what is actually in that apple crate that Jokkish bought off of Bama Jean. Seems AJ Worshington now has a brain slug attached to his head and prefers to be called Zoop Zoop. Speaking of Jokkish, he has received a message from his brother in law, the head of his order the Supernatural Tracking Universal Policing & Investigative Department. He must track down three monsters across the universe and put them down before they can cause any harm. What are these three creatures? Is Zoop Zoop different from AJ Worshington? What happens if Better Earth tries to get in touch with him? How does Blockbuster work in this future? Tune in and find out! Welcome to Botched: A D&D Podcast! The crew still hasn't quite completed their mission yet. One more ship to search, at least this one seems like it will be easy, since it's a Murican ship and not a Mutagos ship. Unless of course, some other ship shows up to make sure there aren't any dirty scavengers lurking about. If they can manage to get out of there with a good haul, maybe they can make a pit stop at Marge's Garage. Let's just hope their scavenging rival Sal Vager isn't there. Sal's a Pastonian with a lot of money and influence. He also loves making our crew's lives miserable. If they can manage to get all that done, then it's simple to just drop off the crystals at the designation and be on their way. Right? Why did AJ abandon his brethren back on Better Earth? How will Sal try to screw them if he shows up again? What are they going to do with that damn suspected banshee? Tune in and find out! Are you overcomplicating the nuts and bolts of nutrition way more than you need to? Nutrition is quite simple when you nail down the strategies and models that work best for you and your body. That's why I wanted to bring a good friend of mine, Ryan Andrews, on today to talk about strategies and tactics we can use to make changes to our nutrition behavior and habits. Ryan received his undergraduate degree in exercise science from the University of Northern Colorado. He also completed his training to become a Registered Dietician at Johns Hopkins Medicine, which then led him to his career with Precision Nutrition since 2007. It's easy to get overwhelmed when dealing with changes in your nutrition: budgetary considerations, life/job considerations, food preferences, having a family to cook for, digestive issues, etc. Where we find people struggling is actually taking the daily actions to execute a nutrition plan. Here at Rebel, our athletes are very serious about their training and performance, and in most cases, a lot of them are undereating. There are so many strategies we can use to supplement getting in more food, making physique changes, and bettering our performance. In the last chunk of the episode, we dive into Ryan's new book Swole Planet Building a Better Body and a Better Earth. We break down how changing our diet can accomplish a lot in the world. On today's episode, I'm joined by Zain Jan, he's best known as the founder & CEO of Better Earth. We have the opportunity to learn about Zain's journey and how he grew two 8-figure companies by 24. Zain came from an immigrant family, raised outside Boston. His parents both worked significant hours and he barely got to see them. All throughout school, Zain was constantly tested for learning disabilities or behavioral issues. His dislike of public schooling reflected on his poor grades. Zain did end up going to college more so for making connections and not to study. With great self-awareness, Zain realized college wasn't for him and dropped out to pursue business. He was recruited by Aaron Katz to work at Bright Planet Solar and eventually got recruited by Solar City and built the larges sales office at 20. From there, Zain co-founded Better Earth and the rest was history. On this episode of the podcast we sit down with Max Himmelrich from Dope Bottle! Dope Bottle is a non-profit who works with NFL athletes like Kenny Stills to raise awareness on the importance of getting off single-use plastic water bottles. We talk about their a buy-one give-one model which is similar to Tom's Shoes, and how they got plugged into the professional athlete circle. We also dive deep into the importance of the broader sustainability movement being easier and “better” for people to adopt, and the necessity to not be puritanical in our messaging. They're trying to make sustainability cool just like us. We also touch on some collaboration between Better Earth and Dope Bottle in the near future. All-in-all, it's a value packed conversation that we believe will be as fun to listen to as it was to record! Watch full video episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MOxRJgR0fU
Zain Jan started his first company at 16, dropped out of college at 19, and went on to build a Multi-Million Dollar empire by 20. In a nutshell – this Boston native is obsessed with starting cutting-edge empires and disrupting the status quo of industries stuck on old ideologies. At the sight and sound of his name, you might immediately assume Zain Jan is the prodigy in a long and successful familial line of politicians, CEO's, and royal ancestry. However in reality he is far from all of those things. Now 23, the self-made millennial has 100+ employees helping him carry forward his vision of a fully renewable Earth and his company Better Earth (0-25 Million in 6 months) is ranked amongst the best places to work in the United States.
In this special anniversary episode of The Case for a Better Earth, Ecojustice Executive Director Devon Page and Earthjustice President Trip Van Noppen look back on what fifteen months of the Trump presidency have meant for the environment, democracy, and beyond.
