Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Joshua Marine, "Challenges are what make life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful." I read an article or got an email about mindset, motivation, and career or business growth. For me, this quote hit the nail on the head. Challenges make us stronger and more resilient and keep life interesting and, sometimes, even frustrating. Overcoming these challenges does make life meaningful and exhilarating. Think of a new skill or new idea you've had recently. Doesn't your blood get pumping with excitement? Change is everywhere, and I believe how we show up during change is where the magic and adventure lie for all of us. In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I'm joined by Zoe Peterson-Ward, the chief customer officer of Workhuman, and Beverly Jones, host of Jazzed About Work podcast and author of Find Your Happy at Work. How do people thrive in the workplace? Of course, a good-paying job and job security are import. Experts say employees also need meaningful work, a sense of purpose, and a sense of being valued and recognized by their employer and coworkers. And they need room for career and personal growth. The more that an employer can foster that kind of environment and the more a person can make their job more meaningful, the better for the worker and the company. In San Diego, at the 2023 Workhuman Conference, I spoke to Zoe Peterson-Ward about that connection. "We had, for many years, focused so hard on efficiency and grinding out the cost of doing business that we forgot that what actually makes people tick and makes people thrive is just as important in getting those business results," argues Peterson-Ward. She says even before the pandemic, the mindset had started to shift and the impact of a worker's sense of dignity and purpose on themselves and the company began to come to light. "We've discovered that we can actually create a much more fruitful environment, if we could just be kind, if we could just be grateful for the work and the commitment that people are giving in their day-to-day world, and the purpose that they are fulfilling, not just for their business but for their entire sustainable being." Says Peterson-Ward, "When you make those connections between purpose and work, it creates a much more productive environment. It enriches the community, it enriches the individual, and I think just creates a generally more beneficial outcome for all the parties involved." In addition to the employer providing an environment in which workers can thrive, workers themselves have ways to contribute to their own sense of fulfillment. That's the thesis behind the book, Find Your Happy at Work. The author is career coach Beverly Jones, who also hosts the Jazzed About Work podcast. She says that your own relationship to your job and career can be just as important as how your employer treats you. "You have your own relationship with your career, which is something that's bigger than your job. (For me), it includes classes I take. It includes things I read, and the discipline I try to have about getting up in the morning and doing things. It also includes how I take care of my fitness, because it takes a lot of energy to keep working for a long time, which I intend to do," explains Jones. Like Peterson-Ward, Jones believes everybody does better on the job if they have an idea of their mission and goals in the context of work. "Work is more enjoyable – it's more successful – if it's tied to your goals and also your values. If you know you're serving the public good – if every day you're making difference in somebody's life – it can be that kind of mission. "But there are also people who are maybe doing a second job because they're putting their kids through college or they're working on their own grad school plan. Work that isn't what you want to do forever, and doesn't have a big mission for you, can be meaningful if it is enabling you to do something else." Jones has suggestions on ways in which your can to find your happy at work. Listen to the podcast here, or wherever you get your podcasts, to learn more. If you’re wondering whatever happened to my podcast - wonder no more. I put the program on hold last spring while I worked on the manuscript for my new book about retirement, which will be published in January 2022. I finished up the book just before Thanksgiving, - and this week the program is back. You can expect new episodes every so often this year. Let’s kick it off with a conversation about career reinvention and retirement. My guest is Beverly Jones, author of the new book, Find Your Happy at Work: 50 Ways to Get Unstuck, Move Past Boredom and Discover Fulfillment. Bev is an author, speaker, podcaster and career coach. She’s a master of career reinvention herself - she started out working in television in radio, and went on to earn and MBA and a law degree. You can catch her program, Jazzed About Work, wherever you get your podcasts. Bev’s book explores ways to find meaning in your work. That’s a theme I’ve written about often, because I think it’s so important as a component of a successful retirement plan. The research tells us that many people wind up retiring earlier than they expected, either due to a job loss or health problem - but sometimes it’s just plain burnout.I asked Bev to connect the dots between her findings about happiness on the job - and in retirement. Click the player icon above to listen to our conversation; you also can find it on Apple Podcasts and Stitcher. Note: The show had been available on Spotify, but the Joe Rogan controversy prompted me to rethink that. Pulling my little podcast won’t matter even a bit to Spotify, but I’ll sleep better. By the way, anyone looking for a new streaming platform should consider Tidal’s Hi-Fi service. In this Special Edition of Jazzed About Work, your usual host Beverly Jones reviews with guest host Tom Hodson some of the topics from past episodes but more importantly, previews what’s to come in 2021 Beverly and Tom also delve into career issues confronting us during the pandemic and Beverly gives advice on what is helpful during these troubled times. She encourages anyone who feels stuck in the doldrums of pandemic isolation to “do something.” She emphasizes that personal growth, in some form, is a key to happiness and satisfaction. Beverly particularly emphasizes the need for each of us to “learn something new” and to push ourselves beyond our normal creative limitations. Positivity also is important, she says. It helps people spot opportunities, stay motivated, remain healthy and get along with others. Especially during forced isolation, Beverly trumpets the need to stay involved with other people. “Humans are hard-wired to need connection with other humans,” she says. “To be well and perform at your best, you need relationships with other people.” Beverly also emphasizes the need for each of us to “look forward and move forward.” She warns that to remain static will only deepen the doldrums and lead to stagnation. We, at WOUB Public Media, look forward to our ongoing relationships with Beverly and Jazzed About Work for at least another one hundred episodes.

The COVID-19 crises reminds us that people truly do need to feel connected with other people. And overwhelming research suggests that a strong and diverse network of relationships is key to building a resilient career. But it can be challenging to keep networking when nothing feels normal. In this episode, guest host Tom Hodson talks with our own coach Beverly Jones about networking basics that remain true, even now. And they explore smart and sensitive ways to keep reaching out to others during difficult times. When we are in times of crisis, we look to our leaders nationally, statewide and locally to provide us with guidance on how we will make it through the crisis and arrive safely on the other side. At the foundation of what we expect from leadership is honesty and transparency, says Beverly Jones, an author, career consultant and executive coach. Jones has been an attorney, lobbyist, corporate executive, trainer and career specialist as well as authoring the book, “Think Like an Entrepreneur and Act Like a CEO. Also, she is the host of WOUB’s Jazzed About Work podcast. Jones notes that “positivity” is also at the top of the list of what we admire in leaders – not the overly optimistic type of positivity but the kind that gives confidence that we will get through this crisis and get through it together. We also want our leaders to care about us, to have empathy and compassion—to be responsive to the broader needs of citizens or, at least, show concern about people’s pain and fears. We hate arrogance from our leaders in the time of crisis. Jones claims that we also want our leaders to be collaborative in developing positions to meet a crisis. Bringing a team of top experts together and listening to their expertise is critical. A leader must be decisive yet flexible enough to adapt to changing situations, she adds. She cites Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and others as examples of leaders who have communicated honestly and often with constituents during the COVID-19 pandemic. People rely on his daily press briefings which include the experts he is consulting. They display to the citizens of Ohio that there is leadership and a team approach to trying to keep the citizenry safe, Jones says. She also gives tips on networking – what it is and what it should never be. For those in the mid-career doldrums, she suggests that they find a new challenge either in private life or on-the-job…something new to learn and master. She suggests that development of new skills will not only make life more rewarding but it often can boost a career at the same time. She also spends a significant amount of her professional time advising new retirees. Often they are looking for new challenges or new careers and Beverly guides them through various exercises to allow them the freedom to try new things and to challenge themselves even at an advanced age. She is a strong proponent of that there should be “fun” in every day of life and new challenges often produce that element of fun.
Ryan Lytle graduated from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in June 2010. In just seven years, he, as a millennial, has had a rapid rise in the job market. For the past year, he has been leading digital audience efforts, social strategy and partnerships for Scripps Network Interactive, including the Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, DIY, Cooking Channel, Great American Country, TVN, Fine Living, and Asian Food. For four years prior, he had social media positions and directorships with Mashable. He also spent two years as a producer, reporter, and social strategist for U.S. News and World Report and started right out of college with MTV handling social media tasks. Lytle has credited some of his early success with key internships in college. As a student, he worked for the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Washington Post, and NBC’s Today Show. Lytle attributes many of his opportunities to networking – “putting yourself and your work constantly in front of important people – even while in college.” He talks with Jazzed About Work host Beverly Jones about always working to increase one’s skill-set of talents and building on them with each new project. Lytle says, that even though new hires are expected to have many different skills in their career tool-box, most companies still hire people with in-depth expertise in a particular field. Today, he says, that video skills are the ones demanding the most attention in the media workplace. Video shooting, editing, and live video are on the cutting edge and companies are hiring workers who have special talents in those fields. After being on a rapid career path for seven years, Lytle says he is now learning more about work-life balance and he is learning that his whole life in not bundled with his career. He says this is refreshing and the balance is giving him new and fresh perspectives on life.

Are you sick of people discussing politics at work? Or are you one of those folks who can’t seem to stop talking about the candidates? Political topics can be explosive, and it is difficult to predict which issues your colleagues may find to be truly upsetting. What starts as casual chat could spiral into an emotional brawl, upsetting people and disrupting working relationships. And even brief comments could offend some coworkers, harming your rep or setting you up for retribution down the road. Understanding how to manage workplace communications is key to building a resilient career.
