Listen to part one here. Change is in the air, and it's making many of us recoil. But, why? And, what can we do to change how we respond to change? To turn it from something we fear into something we embrace, maybe even seek out. Because the other side holds so much potential and possibility, once we've learned how to move through it with so much more grace and ease. That's the conversation we began in last week's Part 1 of this powerful conversation about change with the author of FLUX, and change strategist April Rinne. If you haven't listened to part 1 last week, go back and listen. It's a critical setup for today's jam. We explored a different way to approach the change we don't invite or want, which April calls flux. Then, April shared a number of her 8 Flux Superpowers. And, today, we're bringing the conversation home as we dive into the remaining superpowers, so you can feel amazingly well equipped to handle almost any kind of change that comes your way, in work or life. Change. Just the word makes so many people anxious. But why? Why do so many of us experience change, and even the thought of it, as something negative to be feared and resisted, rather than something positive to be met with hope and excitement, and embraced? That's the question we're diving into today with author of the fascinating new book, FLUX, April Rinne. April has studied how cultures worldwide approach change for decades now, and she's found we're all grappling with the same questions - it's just the tools our societies give us that differ. Through her research, April has identified 8 powerful skills or reframes that she calls Flux superpowers, because they help anyone navigate change with so much more grace and ease. So much less fear, and so much more possibility and energy. This conversation was so actionable and valuable, we went deep into all 8 superpowers. Today, we're sharing part one of this conversation. On an episode of "The Lazy CEO Podcast," host Jim Schleckser welcomes April Rinne, author of the book "Flux: 8 Superpowers for Thriving in Constant Change." Rinne is introduced as a globalist and futurist with a diverse background. She discusses her book and its focus on embracing and thriving in a world of continuous and unpredictable change. Rinne explains that change has always been present, but in the modern era, technology has increased our awareness of change, leading to heightened anxiety. She emphasizes the importance of developing a "Fluxx mindset," which views all change, even challenging change, as an opportunity for growth. Rinne contrasts this with a fixed mindset that resists change. The discussion turns to the role of culture in shaping attitudes toward change. Rinne points out that cultures differ in their approaches to change, whether individualistic or collectivist. She also discusses how trust is crucial in dealing with change and cites examples from her research on different cultural perspectives on trust. The conversation shifts to how leaders can foster a culture that embraces change. Rinne stresses the need for leaders to start with themselves, being open to change, and modeling the desired behavior. She introduces the concept of "cognitive trust" (reliability) and "emotional trust" (caring for one another), highlighting the importance of building both types of trust within an organization. The podcast hosts explore the idea of vulnerability as a key element in building trust and creating a safe space for dealing with change. Rinne emphasizes that leaders must be willing to admit mistakes and vulnerabilities, which can increase trust and foster a culture of open communication. The episode concludes with a discussion of the leadership qualities needed in a rapidly changing world. Rinne highlights the importance of comfort with ambiguity and a tolerance for uncertainty, stressing that acknowledging one's limitations and not having all the answers is an essential aspect of effective leadership in a world of constant change.

What did this episode awaken in you? Don't be shy. https://www.speakpipe.com/10khshow April Rinne's whole message is about Flux. Flow, change, flexibility, rolling with the punches, and paying attention. That's how I capture it, at least. Her actual 8 flux superpowers are here: https://fluxmindset.com/8-superpowers In keeping with the theme, this interview is long and flowing. I did minimal editing to show how the conversation naturally progressed, as a demonstration (in one realm) of what April is bringing to the world. There is a ton of wisdom about dealing with change and how to see our own story as part of the episode, as well as some really beautiful reflection and storytelling from April on what led her to who she is today. April Rinne is a futurist and the author of Flux: 8 Superpowers for Thriving in Constant Change. If there's anything that's been a constant over the past few years for just about everyone, it's change- and big change. There's good change - the kind we opt into. That change is relatively easy. Then there's bad change - the kind that blindsides us and drives us down the spiral of worst-case scenarios and doomsday.April and I discuss several ways for dealing with change that she covers in her book. Over the course of this season, quitting became a constant topic in my life. One of my team members quit to take on a new role closer to home. A new friend talked to me about quitting her job to spend more time enjoying her family and less time worrying about making it all fit in her schedule. A partner quit because he had done what he came to do and was ready to move on to something else. With the perspective I've gained through the Quitter conversations in season 5, I was able to view these Quits within my sphere as something rich and endlessly fascinating. When I started out with this season, I referred to The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek. InThe Infinite Game, players stop playing for two reasons: They lack the external resources to keep playing, such as the remuneration or the job to build an ecosystem, or Their internal resources - such as will and motivation - are depleted causing them to step out. With each conversation in this season, I was trying to sort my guest into one of these two boxes only to be reminded that people can't be sorted into boxes. I found instead that quitting a purpose-driven role is much more complex than that.Listen to the full episode to hear: How a lack of internal and external resources leads changemakers to quit How this season's quitters found new ways to build ecosystems The importance of how you leave - for yourself and your ecosystem The relationship of the long-term work of ecosystem building and the modern realities of shifting careers and roles Learn More About Anika Horn: Website: www.socialventurers.com Instagram: SocialVenturers Newsletter: Sign up for Impact Curator Resources: The Infinite Game, Simon Sinek S04E06: Investing in the Lives of Founders with Todd Nuckols S02E05 – Thriving In a World of Ambiguity, Uncertainty, and Constant Change with April Rinne

She is one of the 50 leading female futurists in the world, a Harvard Law School graduate, a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum, and a Fulbright Scholar. She is also a trusted advisor to well-known startups and companies, financial institutions, nonprofits, think tanks, and governments worldwide. Earlier in life she was a global development executive, an international microfinance lawyer, and a hiking guide. She spent nearly four years traveling solo (with a backpack and a shoestring budget) to better understand how to help shape a more inclusive, equitable world. From her varied and vast experiences, she developed her concept of Flux—how to adopt a mindset that thrives in our world's pace of constant change. In this episode, she'll share with us the eight mental shifts you need to make to thrive in a state of constant change, and why you should not try to run fast, but instead run slower.__________________________________________________________________________________________"The flux mindset, you just nailed it, because one of the ways I'll define it is: It is the state of mind or the ability to see every change whether it's good or bad, loved or hated, unwelcomed or unexpected as an opportunity, as a means of growing and improving even the hard stuff, it's not a threat but to be able to harness those silver linings."-April Rinne__________________________________________________________________________________________Episode Timeline:00:00—Introducing April + The topic of today's episode1:48—If you really know me, you know that...2:15—What is your definition of strategy?2:53—What got you interested in strategy?3:47—Could you describe the flux mindset?5:00—Why does a strategist need to get their head around to build their awareness about a flux mindset?5:48— Can an organization or a sector or community also have a mindset? 7:09—What's the right perspective to approach flux from?9:18—Could you explain the concept of slowing down, even if the world is accelerating?11:14—What are some of the other eight superpowers that we should be mindful of?13:30—Could you tell us more about the superpower of scenario planning?15:10—What do people usually get wrong?16:52—What's some advice or something you wish you had learned earlier?19:28—Where can people find you and connect with you and learn from you?__________________________________________________________________________________________Additional Resources:Flux website: https://fluxmindset.com/what-is-a-flux-mindsetPersonal website: https://aprilrinne.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aprilrinne/
