On Monday, Oct. 7, my organization, Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE), co-hosted with Michigan Lighthouse Ministries a press conference with more than 50 pastors from across the State of Michigan, noting the atrocities committed last year by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens and expressing solidarity with the State of Israel. We chose a church in the state of Michigan for this program because Michigan is home to the largest Arab American population in the country. It is also home to Rep. I'll talk to one spiritual leader who says a cease-fire is necessary. Dr. Gina M. Stewart broke the precedent by becoming the first woman to deliver a sermon during the National Baptist Convention. Today is exactly two years since Amir Locke was gunned down within seconds of the Minneapolis, Minnesota, police department trying to execute a no-knock warrant. His family will be here to tell us how they've been doing to get justice for Amir. Tonight, we honor two legends we lost this week: Actor Carl Weathers and Civil rights activist and radio host Joe Madison, known as "The Black Eagle. Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Gray, LCMS Director of LCMS Black Ministry, joins Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve Series to talk about his journey to the LCMS and then to the pastoral ministry, his experiences as a Black Lutheran pastor, the work that LCMS Black Ministry and the Black Clergy Caucus do today, and the opportunities he sees for these ministries to use SAS resources to encourage young people to consider church work vocations. Find LCMS Black Ministry at lcms.org/blackministry. Learn more about the Set Apart to Serve Initiative at lcms.org/setaparttoserve. Christ's church will continue until He returns, and that church will continue to need church workers. Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. Together, we pray for workers for the Kingdom of God and encourage children to consider church work vocations. Here are three easy ways you can participate in SAS: 1. Pray with your children for God to provide church workers. 2. Talk to your children about becoming church workers. 3. Thank God for the people who work in your congregation. The Indianapolis Concerned Clergy is calling on IMPD Chief Randal Taylor to resign, citing a lack of transparency and not holding officers accountable. We pulled the receipts that show exactly the opposite. Chief Taylor has fired a number of officers following incidents of use of force, battery and more. Those events are documented by news reports that can be easily found online. Chief Taylor has no intention to resign.

We don’t talk about castration enough… But castration is a big part of the Black American identity. It’s why Rev. Jesse Jackson fantasized about cutting off Obama’s nuts. (His words…not mine… #NeverForget) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkRdLEot6zE Don’t believe me? The scholars in our midst can read Prof. Dianne Miller Somerville’s work on “Rape, Race, and Castration in Slave Law in the Colonial and Early South.” The same fear of Black men that led to the rise of the KKK also encouraged the practice of castration. During the Nadir of American Race Relations, Black men and women were lynched and mutilated so their body parts could serve as souvenirs…relics of White Conquest. It was the anatomy of a lynching… The castration occurred to bear witness to the virility of the White Male and the undergirding of White Power. We tend to think that we’ve moved away from castration, as a society. We’ve evolved and we are beyond that. Now, we engage in self-castration. Now, Black men don’t have to be lynched in order to be castrated. The Society has been designed to compel Black men to castrate themselves. The Black community watches on, as a man castrates himself, and remains silent. We encourage the self-castration and then wonder why that man is ineffective. When will we stop allowing the self-mutilation of blackness? I think it takes an intentional effort by the Black Church for us to begin undoing our penchant for self-castration. That’s why I think the Senate race of Rev. Raphael Warnock is critical - especially in these times… The Georgia Runoff is happening immediately after President Trump was defeated… I know I don’t have to tell you that… I also don’t have to tell you that Trump has been by far the most vitriolic and offensive President of recent memory. There was a constant, open and explicit assault on Black Identity. In Western Civilization, who is supposed to defend the integrity and honor of a people that have been offended? Hence the purpose of castration… Immediately after the Trump Era, we need a Black Man to do what Barack Obama could not do. We need a Black Man to demonstrate the righteous indignation of a people that have been offended by another. Obama had it early on…in his candidacy. But when sermons from Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright popped up, White Power handed Barack the knife. He castrated himself, denied his faith and became President. He didn’t have much choice… It’s not like the Black Community was (proudly) standing back and standing by, making it clear that the establishment had no right to question his faith - nor the faith of Black people, shaped by our American sojourn. It’s not like Black Clergy mounted a defense of Black Faith, like “evangelicals” launched for Justice Amy Coney Barrett. So without cover…without guidance, Barack Obama didn’t have a choice. He took the knife… After that, it became impossible for him to ever take the stands we have wanted him to take on behalf of Black America. He had been forever rendered powerless in the arena set up by the White Man. And they’re doing it again with Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock. What will we do? What should we do? That’s our discussion on this episode of Blacks with Power. Check it out, and let us hear from you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1NGrzXBxX4&feature=youtu.be&sub_confirmation=1

In this episode, Dr. Catherine Meeks interviews Bishop Barbara C. Harris. This is one of the last recorded conversations with Bishop Harris before her journey into eternity in March of 2020. Dr. Meeks spoke with Bishop Harris in November of 2019 in Atlanta at the launch of the Bishop Barbara C. Harris Justice Project honoring her legacy of dismantling racism and social injustices. Bishop Barbara Clementine Harris was born on June 12, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Harris grew up in Germantown, a neighborhood of Philadelphia. Her mother, Beatrice Price Harris, played the organ for St. Barnabas Church and her father, Walter Harris, was a steelworker. While attending Philadelphia High School for Girls, where she excelled in music, Harris wrote a weekly column called High School Notes by Bobbi for the Philadelphia edition of the Pittsburgh Courier, an African American newspaper. After graduating from high school in 1948, she attended the Charles Morris Price School of Advertising and Journalism. She earned a certificate from Charles Morris Price in 1950. In later years, Harris would study at Villanova University and the Episcopal Divinity School. As a member of the Episcopal Society for Cultural and Racial Unity (ESCRU) since the late 1950s, Harris served on a number of diocesan committees. In the 1960s, she helped to form the Union of Black Clergy and Laity which was subsequently called the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE). She was a member of the St. Dismas Fellowship and served on the board of the Pennsylvania Prison Society. During the summer of 1964, Harris volunteered with Delta Ministries in Greenville, Mississippi, educating and registering voters. In 1974, she advocated for the ordination of the “Philadelphia Eleven,” a group of women who had been ordained priests, but were labeled "irregular" by the Anglican Communion. By 1976, the church began to admit women priests and, in October 1980, Harris was ordained as a priest. After her ordination, she served as priest at St. Augustine of Hippo Church and as chaplain of Philadelphia County Prison. In 1984, Harris was appointed executive director of the Episcopal Church Publishing Company, molding the social direction of the Episcopal Church. Known for her strong advocacy for social justice, Harris was elected in 1988 as the consecrated Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, becoming the first female bishop in the Anglican Communion. She served as bishop until 2002 when she retired at the age of seventy-two.

Dr. DuWayne Battle is an Associate Professor of Teaching, Director of the Baccalaureate Program, and Course Coordinator of the Diversity & Oppression courses for the Rutgers School of Social Work graduate and undergraduate programs. Under his leadership the undergraduate social work program has more than quadrupled, making it one of the largest and most diverse in New Jersey. Ranked number 2 and 3 of the best US undergraduate social work programs by College Factual and U. S. Today respectively. Dr. Battle is the past president of the Association of Baccalaureate Program Social Work Directors, the National Association of Social Workers – NJ Chapter, and the Southwestern Social Work Association. Currently, he is the campus coordinator of the Baccalaureate Child Welfare Education Program (BCWEP), a consortium of all of New Jersey’s schools and departments of social work. He is also a member of the New Jersey Baccalaureate Social Work Educators Association (NJBSWEA), member of the NASW-NJ Continuing Education Program Committee, and serves on several other boards and committees. His most recent work has been related to COVID-19 and racial justice. “COVID-19 and the death of Black Clergy,” “I can’t breathe,” and “How do we keep the homeless safe during this crisis?” He had a BBC interview on “The disproportionate impact of the Coronavirus on the African American community,” and he has an article in press entitled, “Examining the Social Justice Implications of Physical Distancing and the Economic Stimulus Plans.” His co-authored article, entitled, Measuring student learning in social justice courses: The Diversity and Oppression Scale, provides an important instrument to evaluate courses on diversity, oppression, and social justice in schools of social work. Dr. Battle has been an advocate for open and affordable textbooks, increasing accessibility for people with disabilities, and he has led an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence and more than $200k for the Krystal Skinner Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund and the Phi Alpha National Honor Society Scholarship Endowment Fund. A look into the diversity and oppression course at Rutgers School of Social Work which explores a range of diverse populations by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and physical differences. Additionally, students examine the role, function, and effects of oppression in society as it relates to social, economic, and environmental justice. Students investigate the many assumptions that underlie theory and research methodologies from which basic constructs of human behavior are drawn. Students also seek to understand how power and other dynamics work together to sustain oppression at the individual and institutional levels. Also, of interest in this course is how oppression affects social work practice service delivery at micro and macro levels, with particular emphasis on social policies and strategic planning which drive the shape of services. This course, required of all MSW students as part of the Professional Foundation Year, introduces those concepts about diversity and oppression considered essential foundation knowledge for social work, and provides the basis of subsequent and more extensive exploration of related issues in other classes and the field practicum. The Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers (2017, standard 1.05,(c) mandates that “social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical ability.” As a result of this course, students are expected to begin a career-long process of learning and incorporating an understanding of culture and oppression into their practice. The Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers (1999, standard 1.05, p.9) mandates that social workers pursue knowledge about effective micro and macro practice with diverse and oppressed clients and the social systems with which they interact. As a result of this course, students are expected to begin a career-long process of learning and incorporating an understanding of culture and oppression into their practice. 0:08 – Wilfred Chan (@wilfredchan), contributing writer at the Nation and a founding member of leftist Hong Kong collective Lausan, talks about his new article for the Nation, “The Infinite Heartbreak of Loving Hong Kong.” China is expected to pass a new law criminalizing dissent in Hong Kong, an enormous setback for activists who have been demanding suffrage, an investigation into police violence, an end to the characterization of protests as “riots,” and amnesty for jailed activists. Chan talks about hopelessness and the danger for Hong Kong residents and advocates, as well as solidarity with mainland Chinese who are also advocating against state repression and disappearances. 0:34 – The Central California Food Bank operates in five counties and distributes food to over 70,000 families.
