Both Luke chapter six and Matthew chapter seven record the words Jesus spoke which are now commonly referred to as The Golden Rule. “So in everything,” Jesus said, “do to others what you would have them tdo to you, for this sums up the law and the prophets.” I recently read a hand-written letter that my grandfather wrote to my mother upon her birth, ninety-years ago in 1934, expressing his deep hope that she would grow up to follow Christ and love others. He mentioned the Golden rule. In a day and age where our kids are encouraged to look out for number one and use others to their own advantage, we need to encourage our kids to engage consistently in service to others. New research even tells us that teens who volunteer in service to others not only benefit those others, but experience improvements in their own health and well-being, including the mitigation of feelings of isolation and loneliness that are epidemic today. Following God's commands lead to our human freedom and flourishing.

There is no doubt food cooked in camp or in the outdoors simply tastes better, regardless of the "makings".  Both Luke and Larry are adept at cooking outdoors particularly over an open-fire with cast iron. Luke too has mastered cooking with smoke in this week's episode they discuss cooking in the great outdoors.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP As things are wrapping up on a fantastic Aussie summer of racing, I've got one more piece of Australiana for the pod: three-time Aussie national road champion Luke Plapp.  This was a really cool pod for me to record. Both Luke and I are members (and started out) at the Brunswick Cycling Club, here in Melbourne. I happily took the opportunity to go back to the Brunswick Velodrome to catch up with Luke a few weeks ago, in what was the early phase of his build-up to what he hopes will be a breakout season.  Even though he's still only twenty-three, it seems like ‘Plappy' has achieved a lot in a short space of time. Before turning pro with Ineos in 2022, he was a decorated track cyclist, picking up Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals, as well as a junior world title.  It's been such a fast rise, I was really keen to get the whole story from Luke: going from a sports-obsessed kid in Melbourne, his time on the track, and turning pro with one of the biggest teams in the world.  I also wanted to know about how he'd adapted to life as a pro in Europe and to hear about the challenges that he faced having turned professional with limited exposure to racing and living over there.  Like a lot of champions, Luke has a great ability to recognise and work on the things that will help him improve. It was really eye-opening for me to have such a humble conversation with someone in his position. I think it's a great listen because of this, and there is a lot in his approach that could be of real interest to you guys at home.  Indulge in the last rays of the Aussie summer, and give this a listen; you're gonna love it! State Reps. Aaron Johanson and Sylvia Luke joined Spotlight Hawaii this morning to discuss the future of Aloha Stadium, and more broadly about the state's budget challenges. The Stadium Authority is seeking to redevelop the 98-acre site, with a 30,000-seat facility, to replace the aging 50,000-seat stadium. The project is expected to also include a mix of housing and retail development. “The stadium is great but for too long it's been sort of this fallow property that other than games, and a parking lot, and a swap meet, it hasn't really been leveraged for it's maximum potential,” said Johanson, whose district includes the redevelopment area. “We see this as a great opportunity to leverage not just the stadium itself, but the entire 98-acre campus, which is a prime jewel that is largely undeveloped, to turn it into an additional thriving community that really does connect the edge of Honolulu in the stadium area with Aiea.” The project is expected to run upwards of $300 million dollars. Luke, who chairs the House Finance Committee said that it is important for the public to understand the state funds allocated to the project have been generated through bonds, set aside long before the financial woes brought on by the pandemic. “This project was already underway before COVID and there's a commitment to continue, otherwise you know, any time there's a delay it will essentially be wasting taxpayer's money,” she said. Both Luke and Johanson said that they believe it may still be possible for the University of Hawaii to play games at Aloha Stadium in the near future, despite the Stadium Authority telling UH that that is no longer an option. Just this morning, UH athletic director Dave Matlin told the Board of Regents that the university is projecting expenses to play football games on its Manoa campus will exceed revenues by $400,000 a year. “When the Stadium Authority made an assessment that the stadium is partly unsafe, they looked at the utilization of the entire stadium. But as you know, we have not been filling all 50,000 seats so we could probably utilize a portion, so it really depends on what portion we can keep open to allow UH football and other things to happen,” Luke said. Luke suggested the possibility of repairing part of the existing stadium to allow for games. Johanson agreed, “The field is still very usable at the stadium…I think we have to do what is ultimately in the best interest of the taxpayer.”

ParallelismYou have to love some good parallelism. Star Wars has made plenty of use of parallels. Both Luke and Anakin lose their hands.Both (as well as Rey) come from small beginnings on a desolate desert planet.And both of them have their temptation scene with Darth Sidious seated in a metal chair with space behind him. In both, the young Jedi is tempted to kill the sith apprentice. Anakin makes the wrong choice and does, while Luke does the right thing and takes mercy. There are plenty of other examples, but take a look at those two clips and you will see the obvious parallel. We can do the same thing with our songs. A great example of parallelism in a song is Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.Listen to get the rest!

There are some trailers to be discussed. Wild trailers, weird trailers, and maybe even slightly disappointing trailers. If you're looking for it, we got it. First up is DEATH ON A SCENIC DRIVE. Despite an awful poster, this one is worth hanging in there for. Next up is some shit that we've never seen before; a Finnish hillbilly horror film. Now we don't know exactly what that means, but KYRSÄ-TUFTLAND has us ready… we think. DESOLATION tries to make camping in the woods scary again. Opinions and speculation fly on this one. There is a strong possibility that we ignored A NIGHT IN THE CABIN early on, but there is no ignoring it now. Finally we look at another example of mining nostalgia, this time from Paramount who is eyeballing a movie adaptation of ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK. How does this work, we don know but we would love to hear further speculation. Our review segment starts off with MAYHEM. Both Luke and Jacob were ignoring this one, and perhaps unfairly so. It's easy to call it a BELKO clone, but that may be selling it short. We get into that and then organically morph into not one, but TWO additional mini-reviews. Both are for things most of you guys have already seen, but we drop our thoughts to see if we line up with the masses. Finally we do something a bit new for our last segment. We get asked to build a horror tour ride (something a la Universal Studios) using only 5 horror icons. In true Modern Horrors fashion, we wade in blind and build it right on the spot.
