Little is known about Russia's “shadow fleet”. These ships have been used to move Russian oil around the globe and avoid restrictions put in place by western governments after Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.The existence of the shadow fleet is worth billions of dollars a year to the Kremlin. But who owns these ships? How were they acquired? Who oversees their operations? Many of these questions went unanswered, until a recent FT investigation. Senior energy correspondent Tom Wilson explains what he found and what could happen next for the fleet as an end to the war is discussed among world leaders. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For further reading:How Russia's ‘shadow fleet' gets its ships Shares in shipbroker Braemar fall after FT report on Russian ‘shadow fleet'UK cracks down on Russia's ‘shadow fleet'EU agrees new Russia sanctions in the face of US push to end Ukraine warTo see some of the vessels mentioned in this episode, check out the Bosphorus Observer, the blog of ship spotter Yoruk Isik.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Follow Tom Wilson on X (@thomas_m_wilson). The weather has certainly been a big talking point for a lot of us this week. And it's also the theme of a new exhibition at the McManus Art Gallery and Museum in Dundee. Rachel went to take a look at A Weather Eye along with curator Kirsty Matheson. We hear from Paul Hetherington of charity Buglife about the impact the mild weather before Christmas, and now the very cold weather, is having on our bees. Sadly, it's not great news.A second pair of lynx has been captured after being found near Kingussie in the Cairngorms National Park. Two other lynx, released illegally, were caught in the same area on Thursday. We get the latest from BBC Scotland's Environment, Energy & Rural Affairs Correspondent Kevin Keane.Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre in Aberdeenshire is Britain's only purpose-built all-weather facility for cross-country skiing and roller skiing. And since there was a bit of snow on the ground, Mark went along to try his hand at cross-country skiing. We speak live to Donald MacRae, vice chair of Scottish Mountain Rescue about the conditions the teams across the country have been facing so far this year. We also hear advice on heading to the hills at this time of year and how prepared you need to be.Staying in the hills, the Glenmore Visitor Centre and Café near Loch Morlich has had a bit of a facelift in recent weeks. It's now owned by the community, who have big plans for the centre. Rachel went along for a visit to hear about what they've done so far, and what's yet to come. The wintry weather prompted Mark to think about the extreme winter weather of the recent past, including low temperatures in Braemar of -27.2 degrees Celsius.Photographer and Landward presenter Shahbaz Majeed has a new book out which explores Scotland's landscapes from a slightly different perspective. Recently, Rachel caught up with Shahbaz in his home city of Dundee for the Scotland Outdoors podcast. He told Rachel the story of how a rather unexpected request led to him making a name for himself behind the lens. And when Mark visited the Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre, he couldn't say no when he was offered the chance to go tubing. The simple pastime of sliding down a hill in an inflatable ring is pretty popular at the centre with kids and big kids too!

2024-10-22 | Moscow has been using old, underinsured ships to transport oil, and is estimated their capacity has increased by 70% since last year. This is despite a recent crackdown on insurers and shipping companies that are apparently enabling Moscow to circumvent Western sanctions. ---------- SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISER - A project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's frontline towns. https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras ---------- Shares in shipbroker Braemar fell after the Financial Times of London release a report on the Russian ‘shadow fleet', and how it's using ancient vessels to move oil beyond the reach of western sanctions. The ‘shadow fleet' is estimated to consist of more than 400 vessels that are moving about 4 million barrels of oil per day. The Financial Times alleged involvement of Braemar, causing its stock to fall 11% in two days. London has long been a global centre of the maritime industry and Braemar, founded in 1982, is one of the industry's leading brokers. Their business model is to match buyers and sellers of vessels in return for a percentage of the purchase price. It would be scandalous indeed, if they were involved in brokering to build up Russia's shadow fleet that it props up its war economy and the war machine that is focused on the annihilation of Ukraine. Oil that Russia transports using this fleet generates billions of dollars a year in additional revenue. The FT reported that at least 25 of shadow fleet vessels had been purchased by a British accountant on behalf of Eiger Shipping DMCC, the Dubai-based shipping arm of Lukoil, Russia's second-largest oil producer. Eiger, it is alleged, financed the acquisitions by paying in advance to charter the vessels. The accountant's lawyers, and another person, told the FT Braemar was fully aware the vessels were being acquired for, and financed by, Eiger. ---------- Sources and recommended reading: https://www.ft.com/content/57b85fab-fa44-4881-b7ed-543116920fa7 https://www.ft.com/content/b9dee3f3-c2f8-4aa1-b0d9-d207f815b6e5 https://www.politico.eu/article/revealed-putins-sanctions-busting-shadow-fleet-is-spilling-oil-all-over-the-world/ https://euromaidanpress.com/2024/10/15/ukraines-foreign-minister-calls-on-europe-to-fight-russias-shadow-fleet-of-tankers/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. Today we're joined by three team members of Braemar Energy Ventures, ESG Head Lori Collins, Partner Don Tappan, a Co-Founder and Managing Partner Bill Lese. I was excited to talk to the Braemar team because their firm has been investing in energy companies for over 20 years and have backed some early category-defining pioneers like ChargePoint and EnerNOC. Since they're investing in a wide range of companies driving the energy transition, they bring broad insights to today's climate tech opportunities as well historical lessons from the clean tech 1.0 years. We dive deep into three of their investments, offering insights to the carbon transformation market, applying AI to upgrade the grid and last but definitely not least, nuclear fusion. We talk about the trends in those spaces, why Braemar made the bets that they did, the ESG and impact considerations of their portfolio companies and much more. Nestled in the majestic Scottish Highlands, the Fife Arms was recently named best hotel in the U.K. by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. With over 16,000 pieces of art and antiques, this 19th-century hunting lodge turned hotel in the historical village of Braemar serves as both an international art gallery as well as an eclectic, cozy, and welcoming countryside home. Though a newer hotel (it opened only in 2019), the Fife Arms quickly earned legend status and consistently wows travelers with its drama, eccentricity and charm. Ewan Venters, the CEO of the hospitality and development company Artfarm, joins Melissa on today's episode to dive into how he helped transform this landmark hotel into a ‘living contemporary art museum.' For Ewan, “hospitality is all about the generosity of spirit” and he explains how the connection to art and community creates a unique guest experience at the hotel. He reveals the journey of opening the Fife Arms and designing an authentic space for the culturally curious traveler; he talks about the famous whiskey library Bertie's Bar (named after Queen Victoria's rebellious son) and shares the secret to the hotel's success (including feedback from the famous actress and prior hotel guest Judi Dench). Indagare Productions Director Kathryn Nathanson also jumps on to share travel tips for making the most of a trip to the Fife Arms after staying there this past April. She'll dive into how to get there, what to wear, see, eat and do. But this week we're going to war-torn Ukraine to feature the Lviv Book Forum, in collaboration with Hay Festival, which runs in a bomb shelter between 6th and 9th October. We talk to the courageous and undaunted Programme Director, Sofiya Chelyak, and to the human rights KC, Philippe Sands, celebrated author of East West Street, The Ratline and a new book The Last Colony. Philippe will be attending the extraordinary festival alongside Henry Marsh, Misha Glenny, Margaret Atwood, Yuval Noah Harari, Elif Shafak and Margaret MacMillan. It's actually the 29th edition of the Lviv Book Forum, Ukraine's biggest literary festival, but given the war it's had to be shrunk and with Hay's support, it's defiantly going ahead with just 40 writers. As its digital partner for the first time, Hay will broadcast the conversations free in English, Ukrainian, and Spanish. Sofiya describes the festival as running ‘in defiance of the evil that seeks to squash their freedom,' and so we applaud and admire its efforts to keep these vital conversations alive and deepen our understanding of this little-known, vast and complex country.
