Does punishment work with dogs? Dr. Ian Dunbar has spent five decades at the forefront of the industry as a vet, researcher and trainer, and he's channeled it all into his new book, "Barking Up The Right Tree." In this episode, we focus on the one chapter that is a master class on punishment. Rather than addressing the morality or ethics involved, Dunbar goes straight to the science: Is it effective? When we yell, jerk on the leash, buzz or shock our dogs, what does it teach them? Listen to find out.

Expert Tips for Expanding Puppies' Minds Dr. Marty Greer, DVM joins host Laura Reeves for their ongoing conversation about raising puppies. This month they're talking week four, when the puppies' minds are exploding with new sensory input. [caption id="attachment_12902" align="alignleft" width="528"] From Dr. Greer's "Canine Reproduction and Neonatology"[/caption] “When the puppies first open their eyes, first open their ears, we should have gentle lighting, we should have gentle sounds,” Greer said. “We shouldn't just have this loud TV with Rambo on. So, you know, things like just have the lights starting to come up, their vision isn't great, their hearing isn't great, but it went from almost nothing to something and so we want to ease them into that world.” Four weeks is when many puppies are introduced to solid food. Mothers of wild canids vomit for their puppies as their introduction to solid food. Laura describes making puppy food the “consistency of dog vomit.” Marty recommends shallow water bowls for puppies to prevent drowning hazards, as well as Lixit bottles for smaller breeds. 100 experiences in 100 days “I try to do a lot of variation in the enclosure. I have a rabbit hutch that's got a two story ramp on it so they can go in and out of doors and up and down the ramp. I have all kinds of little beds that have holes and places for them to go. Honestly the best toys are the kids' toys that I pick up at garage sales. So you pick up, you know, baby walkers and all kinds of toys and they're brightly colored and they're hard plastic. They're not durable enough for the aggressive chewer or adult dog. So you probably don't want them in with mom if you've got a lab that eats everything, but they're fun. They make interesting noise and you can do variability. “I think both Sophia Yen and Ian Dunbar, veterinarians that talk a lot about behavior and development, talk about a hundred experiences in a hundred days. “I have a series of 11 bath mats that are all different sizes, shapes, colors, textures. The mesh ones I put under the puppies when they're really young because the urine runs through and so they stay dry. When you're in that transition period between when mom stops cleaning them, that two to four week transition period when they start urinating on their own, they stay dry and it doesn't soak into a pad directly on their skin so it's cleaner and neater. “And those again can go in the washing machine. But I went to Walmart during COVID and they had 11 styles of bath mats. They had some with bristles, they had some that were shiny, some with round holes, some with square holes, some were dark colored, some were light colored. Just this whole variety and again I throw them in my washing machine when they get soiled and then I hang them to dry. And I have two sets so that they can rotate through. And you've just given now a puppy 11 different surfaces, so of the 100 experiences you need to do in 100 days, you just did 10 percent of them, with a bath mat.”

When Dr. Ian Dunbar talks about dogs, it's impossible not to sit up and listen. His latest work, "Barking Up the Right Tree," is more than a book; it's a manifesto for compassionate canine companionship that promises to redefine our relationships with our four-legged friends. Tales of cows with personality and horses with heart remind us that the principles of positive reinforcement extend far beyond the backyard. Through personal anecdotes, like the transformation of an uncatchable horse named Pudding, we discover the patience and kindness necessary to train animals in a way that speaks to their nature, not against it. As we wrap up our time with Dr. Dunbar, we explore the revival of a classic puppy training program and the universal principles that apply not just to animal training, but to all aspects of life. The commitment to bettering the lives of pets—and by extension, their owners—is palpable, and the joy found in a well-behaved companion animal is a testament to the power of empathy and education. MORE INFO HERE - https://www.dunbaracademy.com/Podcast Link -https://www.dogstardaily.com/radiohttps://www.facebook.com/doctoriandunbar, https://www.youtube.com/@DunbarAcademy, https://www.instagram.com/dunbaracademy/https://www.empathetic-trainer.com/

Ever wonder why some dog bites are more dangerous than others? We've got you covered in this episode. In this intriguing exploration, Scott Sheaffer takes a deep dive into the world of canine aggression and bite analysis. We unravel the layers of the Ian Dunbar dog bite scale, a tool used by behavior professionals to understand the severity of dog bites—from harmless air biting or growling to the most severe types of bites. This understanding is crucial for anyone dealing with dogs, as it guides us in shaping the right behavior modification approach and fosters effective communication among dog professionals. We further step into the disturbing realm of increasing canine aggression, moving from the initial levels to the more dangerous levels of bites. Level four, five and six bites normally indicate a pattern of intentionally aggressive behavior - meant to harm the victim instead of just warn. These involve deep punctures, potential lacerations, and signify not just a loss of bite inhibition but a clear intent to harm. At times, these can even lead to behavioral euthanasia. By the end of our discussion, we leave no stone unturned in making you aware of the seriousness of dog bites, especially those scaling higher levels. So, join us for this insightful episode and transform the way you understand, analyze and manage dog bites.Social Media and Other Links:DogAggressionAnswers.com (you can leave me a message here)FacebookTraining VideosScott Sheaffer's Dog Behavior Articles About Scott SheafferScott Sheaffer, CCBC-KA, CDBC, CPDT-KA, is a certified dog behavior consultant who has worked with thousands of dog owners and their aggressive dogs. Sean and Haley sit down to chat through some dog ownership myths and generalizations that have personally affected life with Scout. I've felt a lot of internal conflict on different topics, especially in my first year with her — and across-the-board, contradictory statements from different trainers and friends and family members fueled much of that turmoil. We talk about: The false idea that "good dogs have to love other dogs and people" It's not "all in how you raise them" and the nuance of nature & nurture working together How rehoming is sometimes the best option for everyone involved Potentially hurtful statements like "your dog won't have behavioral problems if.... you're a good enough leader, they trust you, etc" that put all the onus on us humans (who are trying our best and already feel plenty overwhelmed & insecure) Similarly, advice like "if you're calm your dog will be calm" and variations of "just don't make a big deal out of things" The classic dogs on the furniture debate and a bit about our understanding of dominance That "you shouldn't comfort your dog when they're scared" If taking our dogs on a daily walk is the end all be all and generalizations about exercise Some related links and references: One of our first blogs, asking why your dog needs to do... well, anything Blog on how we set impactful goals with Scout It's all in how you raise them blog Ian Dunbar on the TWC podcast (and our running list of podcast notes) Puppies born ready to interpret human signals Blog on the balance between advocating for vs babying my dog Our personal dogs on the furniture rules Books I recommend to dog owners (we specifically mention Dog is Love by Clive Wynne and Frans de Waal's works) David Mech dominance articles (I pronounce his name wrong twice in this episode — my apologies! I was quite embarrassed when I realized. That's what I get for primary learning through written works. Oops. But the points about his works still stand.) Special Reproductive Considerations for Rare Breeds Dr. Marty Greer, DVM joins host Laura Reeves to discuss some of the special reproductive considerations for rare breeds. Rare dog breeds offer specific challenges for their breeders including health concerns, limited gene pools, DNA testing mazes and infertility issues. April is Rare Breeds month here at Pure Dog Talk! Watch for upcoming episodes with deep dives into Norrbottenspets, Chinooks and Nederlandse Kooikerhondje. “Pick one thing a year that you're going to try to work through in your breed,” Greer said, quoting from Dr. Ian Dunbar. “Pick what your priorities are. You have to pick. I can't pick for you. You know your breed. You know your genes. At some point we have to really say this is what I'm going to focus on, this is what I'm going to try to breed for or away from, and try to take those incremental steps. You're not gonna get it all in one generation.” How do you eat an elephant... “I think that's so important in the rare breed community to emphasize the you eat the elephant one bite at a time,” Reeves added. “It's really important to recognize that and not get discouraged because you're trying to swallow a whole elephant. Be committed to that long term process. From a rare breed perspective, that's one of the things I always emphasize, this is not a fly by night operation. It's a process, something you're going to dedicate your entire life to.” “You work with other people and you're honest with other people,” Greer emphasized. “So we need to stop hiding things. We need to stop backbiting. We need to stop saying bad things about other people and we need to be really honest with each other and with ourselves so that when you look in the mirror you can say ‘I'm breeding the best dog that I possibly can.' Full disclosure “Nobody goes out and deliberately breeds a bad dog but there's so many aspects to how you have to make these decisions. Without full disclosure you really can't get there. So we have to be honest with each other. No breeder deliberately produced a dog with a genetic problem, but you've got to tell people if you have it because if you double up on it you're going to have surprises in your litter. “Longevity, I think, is seriously under-appreciated. I love breeding females that can still have puppies when they're older. I love breeding old males that still produce sperm. Now that doesn't mean you can't freeze semen when he's young, and you should because then you'll have access to him, but if he lives to be 16 years old and he was fertile till he was 14, you rock man! That means he didn't die of orthopedic disease, he didn't die of bad temperament, he didn't die because he ran away from home and got hit by a car. He didn't die from 1,000 things that he could have died from. Longevity for the win “Don't forget about those old guys and their genetics. Go back to the old publications of your breed. Go back to the old pedigrees and take a look and where are those dogs and what are they doing and how long did they live and what was their lifestyle like and what did they die from.” Greer also strongly recommends purchasing Dr. Jerold Bell, DVM's https://www.routledge.com/Veterinary-Medical-Guide-to-Dog-and-Cat-Breeds/Bell-Cavanagh-Tilley-Smith/p/book/9781591610021 (book) for learning more information on genetic diseases in specific breeds.

Happy New Year!  January is “National Train Your Dog Month” and in this episode of the pawdcast, Karen and Jean chat with Trevor Smith, of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). APDT was founded in 1993 by renowned veterinarian, animal behaviorist, dog trainer and writer, Dr Ian Dunbar.  With a goal of helping trainers improve their knowledge and skills through education, APDT provides an industry standard of excellence for the dog training profession. With over 5200 members in 48 countries, APDT has grown to be the largest association of dog trainers world-wide.It's important to note that there is no formal training, state licensing or national criteria to become a dog trainer.  Anyone can become a trainer without following an approved, regulated, or standardized training curriculum.  Too often owners are enticed by flashy marketing and the promise of quick results and entrust their dogs to unscrupulous, unqualified or under-qualified trainers.  APDT is working to rectify that. A first step was the creation of the LIMA standard.  LIMA stands for LEAST INTRUSIVE MINIMALLY AVERSIVE.  Members of APDT pledge to learn and then provide training that does not involve dominance tactics or use of aversive tools such as choke collars, prong collars or shock and E collars. Trevor shares questions owners should ask when speaking with potential trainers and why all dogs and owners will benefit from some form of training activity. You can learn more about APDT, their work, their standards and how you can identify a qualified trainer here - https://apdt.com/

If two dogs are playing, and you're unsure if your dog is into it, there is a simple "test" you can perform. The Bully Test, which was coined by Dr. Ian Dunbar, is a great way to tell how your dog feels about his or her playmate. Annie looks at how she herself behaved when faced with childhood mean girls, and how voters reacted when bullied by the Bully-In-Chief. Also: Is "bully" an inherent quality in a dogs? Or kids? Is there a term that we could come up with that doesn't vilify one of two puppies when performing this "test?" And: Why you shouldn't expect dogs to just "working it out" during play. Lastly: Annie explains how to use FOMO to train dogs to love going in crates. In this episode I chat with renowned dog trainer and veterinarian, Dr Ian Dunbar, about how he ended up working in the field, and the how training can become more scientific. We also talk about the unexpected results of some recent work I have just been doing with a student, which was inspired by a training tip  Ian gave me a long time ago (and I learn how I had misunderstood what he was suggesting - but its a good intro to how we can do science in this field). We  also discuss the need for the scientific principles of effective reward based training to be applied to horse training and how Ian became a celebrity in Japan! That all follows 3 attempts to get started, without Ian making me laugh. A chance to listen to the person I consider the most inspirational dog trainer of all time. This episode features Mypetcipe, a unique combo of people who care about the health of dogs because a personal experience with their rescued dog inspired them to research human grade recipes that help dogs - and this lead to a whole new adventure.  Their recipes are free to find and easy to prepare. The SnipPet piece is, appropriately, on hand-feeding. Why do the experts, such as Ian Dunbar, suggest handfeeding for adopted dogs?  And why is it not always a great idea.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Season 4 is interviews with people and organizations that help animals. Increase your awareness and be part of the solution by listening, sharing, and reviewing.  Season 3 dives deep into trending methods. Are they right for you and your dog? Season 2 shares the learning journey of my clients with dogs with different issues and backgrounds; always interesting and a great way to feel a connections with others who have similar experiences.  Season 1 starts by sharing my unique learning journey and then dives into why positive reinforcement training (and practices under that "umbrellas") are often limiting, ineffective and/or counter-productive with dogs over 6 months. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology.Guest Contact Info:www.mypetcipe.comFB - mypetcipeCheck out my website for pictures of the recipes created by Mypetcipe or visit their website, www.mypetcipe.comFor more information on UPWARD Dogology and Billie Groom please visit:www.upwarddogology.com  Instagram – Upward Dogology   LinkedIn – Billie Groom   FB – Upward Dogology  billie@upwardogology.comSending out a big thanks to The Jeff Mertick Band for contributing the fun music clips. Remember those dogs in the animated film Up! ? Weren't they brilliantly observed? I loved the way they would all suddenly stop for squirrels. That was Dr Ian Dunbar's idea. If you get the Pixar DVD with the extra disk included you'll see him on stage teaching the animators all about dog behaviour and facial expressions. He's done so much already, but he's eager to do more. I hope you will discover in this video why I say that Ian is our doggie David Attenborough. I would just love us to have him on the TV all the time curating the way we see the dog world. In this interview we discover how the young farm boy became a vet, moved to London in the 1960s and then off to California in the 70s to do a Phd in animal behaviour. He reveals he also lectured in human sex… which I hadn't heard before, but it was apparently very popular! Ian loved teaching and soon some of the human psychologists where attending his puppy classes to watch how the people learned! He says he used all he learned on the farm to go backwards in dog training, to start early and make everything rewarding. His grandfather won a ploughing competition with a horse that worked remotely without reigns. He trained the horse to plough in a straight line without any compulsion. And as a child Ian was regularly recalling 50 cows. Ian wants everyone to stop obsessing with theory and get back to actually training dogs. His son Jamie is gradually digitising Ian's brain and you can now find much of it in the Dunbar Academy archives. In this in depth interview we talk about the revolutionary Open Paw. The brilliant scheme that changes rescues into universities for dogs. And we talk about dog breeders training their puppies before they sell them, dramatically reducing the number of dogs in rescue and increasing the price they can charge. Here's a link to access Ian's brain - and the amazing Dunbar Academy. A huge resource where you can find the solution to every problem as well as some classic seminars. It would literally take you decades to binge watch everything! https://bit.ly/TheDunbarAcademy

We were delighted to be invited to cover the joint Faculty of Prehospital Care and BASICS conference held at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. This two-day prehospital extravaganza covered a broad range of topics and the content was delivered by some excellent speakers. As such, we were absolutely spoilt for choice when it came to content for the podcasts but we managed to catch up with: Dr Abi Hoyle – a paediatric emergency medicine consultant with a background in military and retrieval services. She gave us some key tips when dealing with paediatric patients. Ian Dunbar – a technical and medical rescue consultant with years of experience in the UK Fire and Rescue Service and ongoing involvement with British Touring Car Championship and the FIA. He did some myth busting around extrication from vehicles. Professor Mike Tipton – a leading figure in extreme physiology who is the Associate Head of Research at the Extreme Environments Laboratory in Portsmouth, is trustee/director of Surf Life Saving GB, sits on the medical committee for the RNLI and was awarded an MBE for services to physiological research in extreme environments. Mike spoke on the topic of drowning. Massive thanks to Dr Caroline Leech who put together this brilliant programme and extended the invitation to us. We hope you enjoy the podcast and extract some learning to inform your practice. Enjoy! Simon, Rob & James References Resus Council UK; Prehospital Resuscitation Michael J. Shattock, Michael J. What’s the best way to train your dog? Is positive training the way to go or is it more effective to give your dog corrections? So many people have different opinions (including dog trainers) that it might be hard to know what’s best for your dog. I started my dog training education on one end of the spectrum and now, years later after much research, experimentation and dopey mistakes, my pendulum has swung the other way. To sort through it all I invited dog training and behavior legend Dr. Ian Dunbar to give us his take on this topic.
