Temperance Brennan is back! Author and screenwriter Kathy Reichs needs no introduction. She is back with her latest mystery novel featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. It was a thrill to interview Kathy and to hear her read from A Conspiracy of Bones. At this challenging time, when so many of us are spending more time at home, we can be comforted in the knowledge that there are always great books to read. It's always a joy for me to bring you these interviews with mystery authors, but these days I am especially grateful for all the writers who create riveting stories for us. Long may that storytelling tradition continue! This Week's Mystery Author Kathy Reichs is the author of 20 novels in the bestselling Temperance Brennan series, which was the inspiration behind the long-running television series Bones. She is also co-author of the Virals young adult series with her son, Brendan Reichs. From teaching FBI agents how to detect and recover human remains, to separating and identifying commingled body parts in her Montreal lab, Dr. Reichs has brought her own dramatic work as a forensic anthropologist to her mesmerizing thrillers. She is a native of Chicago, where she received her Ph.D. at Northwestern, and now divides her time between Charlotte, NC and Montreal, Quebec. A Conspiracy of Bones #1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with a new riveting novel featuring her vastly popular character forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who must use all her tradecraft to discover the identity of a faceless corpse, its connection to a decade-old missing child case, and why the dead man had her cell phone number. It’s sweltering in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Temperance Brennan, still recovering from neurosurgery following an aneurysm, is battling nightmares, migraines, and what she thinks might be hallucinations when she receives a series of mysterious text messages, each containing a new picture of a corpse that is missing its face and hands. Immediately, she’s anxious to know who the dead man is, and why the images were sent to her. An identified corpse soon turns up, only partly answering her questions. To win answers to the others, including the man’s identity, she must go rogue, working mostly outside the system. That’s because Tempe’s new boss holds a fierce grudge against her and is determined to keep her out of the case. Tempe bulls forward anyway, even as she begins questioning her instincts. But the clues she discovers are disturbing and confusing. Was the faceless man a spy? A trafficker? A target for assassination by the government? And why was he carrying the name of a child missing for almost a decade? With help from a number of law enforcement associates including her Montreal beau Andrew Ryan and the always-ready-with-a-smart-quip, ex-homicide investigator Skinny Slidell, and utilizing new cutting-edge forensic methods, Tempe draws closer to the astonishing truth. But the more she uncovers, the darker and more twisted the picture becomes... Interview with Kathy Reichs Alexandra: Fantastic. Thank you so much. Just beautiful. I noticed Tempe sort of alludes to the fact that she's going rogue in this book. Can you tell us a little bit about what's happening there?  Kathy: Her boss was murdered, as is referenced in this first chapter in a short story called First Bones. It appeared in The Bone Collection. So she has a new boss. It turns out this new boss and Tempe have history. Years earlier, the new boss, a woman named Margot Heavener, is a pathologist, a good one.

Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Amy Poehler, comedian, actress, writer, and director, who is not from the same town Kate is from, but they both grew up “outside Boston” Early on in childhood Kate fell for The BabySitter’s Club books by Ann M. First Draft Episode #188: Ally Condie Ally Condie, New York Times bestselling author of the Matched series, as well as Summerlost and The Darkdeep, co-written with Brendan Reichs. In this conversation, Ally talks about what inspired her to get an MFA after establishing herself as a bestselling author, always working on two things at once, and how the 2016 election gave Ally enough rage to write her newest young adult novel, murderous revenge story The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode The Planet of the Apes movies, which were filmed near where Ally grew up in rural Utah Ally was inspired by a blog post by Shannon Hale, New York Times bestselling author of The Princess Academy and Austenland, where she wrote about writing 1,000 words a day. Ally was inspired by Shannon to commit to daily word goals. She started with 500. Lisa Mangum, editor at Shadow Mountain press, which released Ally’s first few books Brandon Mull, New York TImes bestselling author of the Fablehaven and Beyonders series, who got his start at Shadow Mountain PressChris Shoebinger, publishing director at Shadow Mountain Press, who released Ally from her publishing contract so she could pursue a bigger contract for Matched Jodi Reamer, literary agent at Writer’s House, who also represents Tahereh Mafi, New York TImes bestselling author of the Shatter Me series (listen to her First Draft episode here), Ransom Riggs, New York Times bestselling author of the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series (listen to his First Draft episode here), John Green, New York Times bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska, and Stephenie Meyer, author of the global phenomenon Twilight series Julie Strauss-Gabel, publisher at Dutton Books, who has edited John Green, Adam Gidwitz, New York Times bestselling author of A Tale Dark & Grimm and The Inquisitor’s Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog, and Gayle Forman, New York Times bestselling author of If I Stay and I Have Lost My Way The Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA in writing for children, the program Ally attended Emily Wing Smith, author of The Way He Lived and All Better Now, and Carol Lynch Williams, author of The Chosen One and Glimpse, two Utah authors Ally was friends with who also attended the Vermont College of Fine Arts for the MFA program Kekla Magoon, author of National Book Award Longlisted X: A Novel (written with Ilyasah Shabazz), Coretta Scott King-honored The Season of Styx Malone and How it Went Down, and was Ally’s mentor at the Vermont program and helped her with an early draft of Poe Blythe An Na, author of Printz winner and National Book Award long-listed A Step From Heaven, as well as Wait For Me and The Place Between Breaths, was also an advisor at the Vermont College of Fine Arts Martine Leavitt, author of Keturah and Lord Death, and Calvin,  who Ally calls “a stone cold genius.” Martine helped Ally work on a project during her Vermont residency. Quentin Tarantino’s advice to screenwriters was to delete the last two lines of dialogue from every scene, which Alfred Gough and Miles Millar--creators of Smallville and Into the Badlands shared with me on their recent First Draft episode. That’s similar to Ally’s feeling that sometimes she writes past the natural ending of a chapter. Brendan Reichs, New York Times bestselling author of Genesis, and co-writer of Virals with his mother, New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs, and The Darkdeep with Ally. Brendan and Ally fortuitously decided to pursue an MFA at Vermont at the same time. YALLWEST and YALLFest, two national young adult and middle grade book festivals held in Charleston, S.C. and Los Angeles. Ally is on the board of the festivals, alongside Brendan Reichs and Margaret Stohl, New York Times bestselling author of the Beautiful Creatures series, Red Widow and Royce Rolls (listen to her First Draft episodes here and here) Stranger Things meets The Goonies, the pitch for Ally and Brendan’s co-written middle grade series, The Darkdeep   Ally’s pitch for Poe Blythe is: “Mad Max: Fury Road meets Firefly meets something really lovey.” I got a distinctly Heart of Darkness (by Joseph Conrad) vibe from Poe when I read it!   Write Out, the non-profit organization Ally founded as a way to bring authors to kids in rural Utah Brendan Reichs, Shannon Hale, Soman Chainani (author of The School for Good and Evil series--listen to his First Draft interview here), and Yamile Saied Mendez (author of Blizzard Besties: A Wish Novel, and the forthcoming On These Magic Shores) are among the authors who volunteer at Write Out Ally and I urge listeners to Marie Kondo your fear -- go write that angry revenge novel!!!!   Book Vs Movie “Forrest Gump” Yes, it was a book first and WOW are their differences between the two! The Margos know that life is more and better than a box of chocolates and one of our favorite books to movie adaptations, Forrest Gump, deserves the full Book Vs Movie treatment. Did you not know that it was a book? Well, get ready to hear the story about author Winston Groom’s background and his real feelings about the 1994 film. (Spoiler--he is NOT a fan!) So just how different is the book from the movie? Well, the book Forrest is a 6’6” and 240-pounds--large enough to draw attention everywhere he goes just in his appearance below. During his lifetime he is a high school football phenom, joins a folk music band with his on and off sweetheart Jenny (more on her in a bit!), joins the army and serves in Viet Nam, is a ping pong champion in China and then works for NASA. Want more? How about the fact he winds up in the stranded in a jungle for years, has an orangutan for a companion, dabbles in chess, becomes a professional wrestler called “The Dunce,” is a stuntman who runs into a naked Raquel Welch, and eventually he winds up running a shrimp business in honor of his deceased friend Bubba. The book is a heck of a ride, let’s just say. And most of the characters you know from the film are featured in the book but are very different in attitude and behavior. For example, Forrest lifelong love Jenny is much more level-headed in the novel and “Momma” is not nearly as sweet as Sally Field portrays her in the movie. There are so many more changes and tons of movie trivia to impart here, so be sure to click on the link at the bottomed to listen to what we think and decide which we like more. This episode is once again sponsored by Penguin Random House! New York Times bestselling author Brendan Reichs has created an incredible YA action “Fie Lake” trilogy--first with Nemesis which was described as “Orphan Black meets Lord of the Flies” and became an instant hit in 2017. Here we are introduced to the world of Fire Lake and a vast conspiracy involving 64 students and an enormous asteroid threatening all life on earth. Genesis is the followup to Nemesis and continues with the students struggling to live in a world where morals have no meaning and brute force passes for leadership. It is now available in paperback! This March will be the launch of the final book in the series--Chrysalis and it is an action-packed conclusion to an amazing series. In this ep the Margos discuss : The life and writing career of author Winston Groom and the plot to his follow up novel Gump & Co. How the cast was chosen including Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump,) Sally Field (Mrs. Gump,) Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan Taylor,) Mykelti Williamson (Bubba,) Robin Wright (Jenny,) and Hayley Joel Osment (Forrest Gump Jr.) The fact that there is a “Margo” in this movie! (Margo Moorer plays the maid, Louise) The many changes between book & movie The use of music and popular songs to help move the plot along. (A little too on the nose? Maybe?) A plethora of trivia and behind-the-scenes gossip about the much-lauded film Clips Featured: Forrest Gump  trailer Young Forrest  (Michael Conner Humphries) and Jenny (Hanna Hall) Young Forrest teaches “Elvis” (Kurt Russel’s voice!) how to dance. Have you ever thought about co-writing some books with your mom? No? Well, if your experience could be anything like Brendan Reichs', maybe you should. Brendan is the co-author with Kathy Reichs of the Virals series--five books and a collection of novellas. What started as a way out of a horrible job became a career in something he's good at and enjoys, and he's now transitioning into solo novels. In this episode, we talk about collaboration, outlining, optimal placement of dry-erase boards, stress, and that one time in his lawyer life when he was admonished from the bench for being immature. And, of course, the pressures of proving himself now that he's writing on his own. For show notes and related links, visit the episode's post at sarazarr.com Theme music by Dave Connis
