When Dan last spoke to author Soman Chainani, the guy was riding high. His wildly popular "School for Good and Evil" series had just been turned into a movie, and he was perfectly happy to keep churning out fairy tales. But somewhere between then and now, the fairy tales stopped flowing. So instead of playing it safe, Soman wrote Young World, a far more controversial book that he simply couldn't not write. Soman tells Dan exactly why he felt compelled to go there, and drops some spicy literary takes along the way. “Get 50% Off Monarch, the all-in-one financial tool at www.monarch.com/HAPPENS Learn more about your ad choices. “I tell kids that books are not there to torment you. The author has to get you in the first ten pages. If they do not, they fail, because a book is like a lawnmower—you pull it, and either it starts or it doesn't start.” –Soman ChainaiSoman Chainani wants reading to feel irresistible. The bestselling author of "The School for Good and Evil," series and the recently released graphic novel, "Coven," shares how his own reading life began—powered by Anne Rice, Michael Crichton, and a complete lack of adult supervision—and how those early obsessions shaped his belief that stories should be bold, boundary-pushing, and personal. In this episode, Soman explains why middle grade books can (and should) feel dangerous, how his grandmother's glamorous storytelling shaped his imagination, and what a book needs to do in its first ten pages to hook a reader. He also unpacks the “moral grayness” that defines his favorite novels and his own writing, and makes a compelling case for why kids need more honesty, not less, in the stories we give them.Tune in for a fast-paced episode that includes Madonna, hot takes, and tips for breaking (all) the rules. ***Soman's reading challenge, Immersive, is all about getting lost in a story. The books he curated blur the line between fiction and reality, pulling the reader in so completely you forget the world around you. Dutch & Tena review the Netflix film "The School for Good & Evil. The School for Good and Evil is a 2022 fantasy film based on the novel of the same name by Soman Chainani.Essentially, the movie is about satan and masonic duality Twin brothers Rhian and Rafal could represent satan as an angel of light and satan in his true evil form The story of the brothers can also be viewed as a perverse version of Yah & satan; where satan saw himself as equal to Yah and wanted to take over and be in charge.https://www.therealistthevisionary.com/

We wish we were there to go bowling with you. Sometimes it's so sad to be far away from our loved ones. We hope you had a FANTASTIC day!!!In other news, Dillon got a new book, 'The School for Good and Evil' by Soman Chainani. On World Book Day, he got a voucher so we trotted down to Waterstone's on this beautiful, sunny Sunday and that's what he chose. Sadly, it was not one of the free books. But he got a discount! And as you'll hear in this episode, he can't stop talking about it. In fact, while Jenn posts all this blah de blah, his nose is back in it.In other news, if you're one of our listeners in India, we need to know if people there sometimes sleep on the roof. I don't think so, but somehow somewhere, Dillon has heard this to be true. Our final news is that Dillon and Daddy worked on creating him a Ravenclaw Easter Bonnet, and I must say, it's looking very spiffy.
