Brian Stack was the chief officer in the maximum security Port Laoise prison, which housed IRA members. In March 1983, he was gunned down by the IRA in Dublin after attending a boxing match – he succumbed to his wombs 18 months later. Austin Stack has long fought for the truth and for justice for his father, meeting with Sinn Féin and IRA officials, including Gerry Adams, to try and get to the bottom of the killing. He joined Ciarán Dunbar. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I loved this conversation so much!!!!! Full disclosure, we kept thinking of things to talk about, so enjoy our many "endings" that turned into other stories LOL Brian Stack played Ted in Article Two, and the jeweler when Ann and Chris go to the jewelery store, BUT he was a writer on Conan for 18 years, he currently writes for Stephen Colbert and I talked his ear off about it all! We discuss his beginnings in Second City in Chicago, how he knew Amy Poehler, and advice for young sketch performers. I ask 800 questions about his Conan characters too and it's so cool to see the inception of it all! We also got some great behind the scenes tidbits about cracking an egg on Amy Poehler's head and how he was glad they used a stunt man! Plus, we discuss New Girl, 30 Rock and more shows he was a guest star on! Brian is the nicest, most grateful person and I am so lucky and honored to have spoken with him about his time in this industry! His gratitude is inspiring and I wish him nothing but the best. Please be sure to check out this compilation of characters, and check out his writing on the Colbert Show!!!!! Brian Stack, a Senior Prison Officer in Portlaoise, was brutally shot by the IRA in 1983, leaving him paralysed and brain-damaged. He died 18 months later, and to this day, no one has been convicted of his murder. Now, his son Austin Stack, who was just 14 when his father passed away, has written a new book, ‘Justice For My Father', detailing his ongoing quest for justice and his fight to uncover the truth behind the crime.Austin joins Kieran to discuss.

We got reaction from Austin Stack, Son of murdered prison officer Brian Stack & Author of Justice for My Father, which will be released on the 13th of March.

Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where FINALLY, after all this time ... we get a visual of the often talked about but never seen Mayor Gunderson! Right after the gang tells each other about their immediate plans for the future (Donna & Joe moving to Seattle, April & Andy leaving for DC, Leslie & Ben splitting their time between DC & Pawnee, Jerry retiring again), the gang learns that Mayor Gunderson has passed away. At the memorial, while everyone processes their grief, Ben asks April and Jerry to help find an interim mayor. Together, they begin interviewing several Pawnee citizens as potential candidates for interim Mayor, including such notables as Bobby Newport, Joan Callamezzo, Dr. Saperstein, and Howard "The Douche" Tuttleman. As the day progresses, they realize finding an appropriate candidate that is ABLE to (and WANTS to) do the job is trickier than they thought. Meanwhile, Leslie is somewhat depressed at all the "endings" going on, and desperately wants to find a "beginning" to balance things out. At Mayor Gunderson's funeral, Leslie talks to Tom, who is now back from his trip to New York with Lucy, and Tom tells Leslie how serious the two of them are, and that they've even looked at rings together. Seeing this as a chance for a "beginning", Leslie convinces Tom to go forward with the proposal ASAP, offering to help Tom with such extravagant details as filming a bombastic action movie for the proposal itself, not to mention lots and lots of over-the-top preparations and decorations to celebrate the (assumed) answer of yes. Finally, Ron seems to be rather composed and generally unaffected by the death of Mayor Gunderson. However, at Gunderson's funeral, he learns that Salvatore, his barber for the past four decades, also passed as well, causing him to nearly collapse in shock and grief. Wanting to show his respects, Ron attends Salvatore's funeral, accompanied by Andy and Donna for support. As Ron approaches Salvatore's coffin to say his final goodbyes, we sense Ron's sadness stems from his fear of change in this whirlwind of changes currently happening all around him ... Salvatore was one of the only constants left in Ron's life. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Who seems to be the strongest of all the interviewed candidates for interim mayor? How will Tom's proposal action movie turn out? Does Ron end up crying at Salvatore's funeral? Can Ben make a decision regarding interim mayor given these circumstances? Will Leslie's preparation for the engagement celebration be used as intended, or will it go to waste? Will Ron find a way to process his grief? What actually HAPPENS to the office of interim mayor? Does Tom end up proposing to Lucy, and if so ... what is her answer? Can Donna and Andy help Ron figure out who his next barber will be? Loyal viewers, we are winding down to the VERY, VERY end of this fantastic series! Can this episode possibly live up to the expectations of its fans? Just how big will the guest star list be? Do we actually consider the Parks and Recreation 2020 Special a "canon" episode in the series? Stay tuned to find out! Many thanks to our wonderful sponsor "Hair by Typhoon."

In this episode of Unspoken Security (sponsored by ZeroFox), AJ Nash is joined by Brian Stack, the Vice President of Engineering and Dark Web Intelligence for Experian, a globally recognized leader in data analytics and consumer credit reporting.Brian and AJ take on the topic of ransomware, including talking about some criminal groups associated with this activity and the evolution from simple ransomware attacks up to complex double-, triple-, and quadruple-extortion tactics being used by some of the most industrious criminal groups that are always looking for new ways to pressure companies into paying these ever-growing ransoms. After examining the financial impact of these ransomware attacks, the conversation turns to recent changes to the laws in a handful of states - making it illegal to pay ransom - and what those changes could mean- What will the impact of these laws likely be?- Will criminals change their behavior? -- If so, will this create haves and have-nots among corporations that eventually require the U.S. to consider a national law?To prevent becoming a victim of a ransomware attack - or at least limit the harm of a ransomware attack should it happen - AJ and Brian provide recommendations for proactive defense, playbooks, and exercises that build organizational strength BEFORE things go wrong. As always, the show wraps up with Brian revealing something that had, to date, gone "unspoken." If you want to know the truth about some of the ugliest things you've ever heard about on the Dark Web...Brian's answer is one you'll absolutely want to hear.
Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where Ben has his first day as Pawnee City Manager! As Leslie returns to her position as Deputy Director of Parks and Rec on a full-time basis, she expects everything to be the same as it was when she left. However, she instead sees many differences: April is handling Animal Control with ease, and Tom's firing on all cylinders in his new role of Business Liaison. Tom mentions his project to enlist a juice company to run a lemonade stand in one of Pawnee's parks to replace a retiring hot stew chef, and states he will be pitching the idea to the Pawnee Small Business Coalition. While somewhat impressed with Tom's initiative, Leslie is NOT impressed with Tom's decision to do things HIS way, instead of following her presentation guidelines that have been a Parks Department staple for 10 years. Worried Tom will fail in his presentation, Leslie decides to convince the hot stew chef to NOT go into retirement, deciding to represent him, and ultimately planning to go head-to-head with Tom in front of the Small Business Coalition. Meanwhile, Ben has an open house on his first day as Pawnee City Manager. He attempts to show everyone (particularly April, Andy, and Donna) that he is very cool, calm, and laid back. However, he ALSO implements a number of new rules to assert his position as a no-nonsense boss. Sensing Ben is wound very tight, the trio decide to prank him with a false arrest to "lighten him up". Two Pawnee police officers end up escorting a terrified Ben down to the station, trumping up ridiculous charges the whole way, until Ben thinks he'll never see the light of day again ... until April, Andy, and Donna come to the police station and reveal the prank. Even though the trio thinks it's hilarious, Ben is NOT amused. Finally, in the middle of taking pictures around City Hall to show their unborn baby where they met, Chris and Ann consider their situation and their plans for the future, and spontaneously decide they should get married. They head to a jewelry store in Pawnee, where they begin shopping for an engagement ring. Listening to another engaged couple also shopping there, they realize how much forethought is typically put into something like this, and start to question not only whether or not they want to buy the ring, but whether or not they want to get married. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Can Tom get his lemonade stand idea going? Did Ben pee his pants at the police station? Will Ann and Chris decide to get married? What will happen to the hot stew stand? Will Ben try to do anything in retaliation? What will Ann and Chris buy at the jewelry store? Will Leslie be able to get back into the rhythm of things? Did Andy like the illegal french cheese? Will Jerry die of cracker-dust inhalation? Loyal viewers, Mark and Allen are really on their game during this episode - tune in and enjoy! (EDIT BY CONSTANTINE: Subtle, guys.) Many thanks to our incredible sponsor, "Strackwell Hardware".
Brian Stack is one of the funniest and most successful television writers and performers in the history of late-night television. Even more importantly, is a proud Indiana Hoosier. No doubt collaborating with the biggest names in showbiz and collecting 23 Emmy nominations is a big deal, but around here being at the Purdue game when Coach Knight tossed the chair is every bit as legendary.Graysen Medina has spent the last four years as a manager pouring his heart, soul, sweat and good nature into the IU men's basketball team. Growing up a Hoosier fan down the road in basketball-crazed Bloomfield, hear how Graysen became a manager, and what it was like behind-the-scenes for two years of Coach Archie, and then two years of Woody. This guy is everything Indiana basketball is all about.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode with special guest star Patton Oswalt! The City of Pawnee annually celebrates the great Pawnee tea dump of 1817, but due to how the old-timey script looks, "tea" looks like "ted", so each year the city dumps a man named "Ted" into Ramsett Lake. This year, the "Ted" thrown into the lake becomes very angry, and demands Leslie address the many, many outdated laws still active in Pawnee. To this end, at the next City Council Meeting, Leslie proposes the city purge many of its old and obscure laws. However, citizen Garth Blunden is overtly against changing the laws due to historical significance, and successfully filibusters the meeting to prevent further action. Leslie implores Garth to reconsider. Garth accuses Leslie of having no respect for tradition. Finally, they decide to settle things with a wager: whoever can survive the longest living primitively at the Pawnee Historical House gets to make the other back down from their agenda. Meanwhile, now that April has been promoted to Deputy Director of Animal Control, Chris requires her to complete the Chris Traeger Management Training Seminar, or "ka-tumps". April asks Ron to help get her out of the seminar, but when Chris learns Ron has ALSO never had any management training, it backfires, with Ron getting roped in as well. As one might expect, things do not go well: Chris is overtly cheery, Ron is stoic and grumpy, April is sarcastic and snarky. Ron and Chris completely disagree on the best motivational methods, so Chris challenges Ron to see whose method works best: encouragement/appreciation/smiles (Chris), or money/fear/hunger (Ron). Finally, Ann's custom holiday with Leslie, "Breakfast Day", is coming up, and she found a waffle maker from JJ's Diner on an online auction. Unfortunately, somebody is bidding against her ... and she discovers that someone is Ben, who is shopping for a present for HIS custom holiday with Leslie, "Waffle Day". The two of them battle it out, trying to win the waffle maker, but ultimately lose to the owner of the Pawnee Pawn Shop, who they then have to deal with. While all this is happening, both Ann and Ben come to the realization that they are EXHAUSTED trying to keep up with the thoughtful but never-ending custom holidays Leslie has come up with for both of them. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Who will win their competition, Leslie or Garth? Will Ron or Chris win the competition, and what side will April be on? Who will win the coveted JJ's waffle maker? Is Garth cheating, or is he just really good at old-timey gibberish? Can Ron and Chris find a suitable mindless worker drone for their test subject? Can Ann and Ben continue dealing with all these custom holidays? Can Leslie get all the chickens out from under her dress? Will April and Ron be able to keep their conductor hats from the seminar? Loyal podcast viewers, this is competition cranked up to 11, just like in Spinal Tap! Many thanks to our wonderful sponsor, "Ron's One Minute Seminars", or ROMS.

Second City alumnus Brian Stack (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert; Late Night and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien) has a knowledge of popular music that's both broad and deep, and this week he shares with us the kind of music that gets him through tough times (like, say, a pandemic); how music intersects with comedy in surprising and hysterical ways; how Van Morrison is perfect for any occasion; his outstanding Neal Young and Michael Macdonald impressions; some comedic inspiration from Men Without Hats; and the importance of sharing your music (while not, of course, sharing your germs). In the first of two special episodes that prove if you become old, you run into everybody again, Christian is joined in studio for a return visit from "Community", "Vice Principals" and "American Dad!" writer Tim Saccardo, where they pick up the conversation from Bladtcast episodes 10 and 11 (re-purposed for Bladtcast 242), including: sage-like advice from Al Bundy, TV short-hand, and a surprising deep dive on Tony Danza's career. They talk about dabbling in stand-up comedy, then make sure Dave Foley never wants to work with either of them. A conversation about Al Franken's latest book leads to a very spirited discussion about Saturday Night Live re-runs, and their favorite cast from the late 80's. They wonder how Bladtcast Nation first discovered SNL, talk about Eddie Murphy's laugh (and recent lack thereof), Inside Joke Dot TV and Inside Joke Productions, sound design on the cheap, and soliciting film festivals in the pre-internet days of the early 2000's. For internet search purposes, it's worth noting that this episode contains shout outs to Ronnie Coppola, David Gelles, Andrew Tavani,Kevin Miller, Benny Tudino (getting a back massage from Hoboken), David Rubin of the Rubin Report, Simmy Kustanowitz, Tom Kelly, Jenni Gilroy, Aaron Bleyart, Chris DeLuca, Carly Wray, Gladys Simon, Greg Cohen, Brian Stack, Max Weinberg, Argus Hamilton, Tom Dreeson and more!
Charna Halpern founded the Improv Olympic theaters in Chicago and Los Angeles, she worked directly with Del Close and mentored many of the most successful comedians working today. Josh and Jake went to Chicago and sat down with Charna for a very special conversation about the history of the Improv Olympic Theater in Chicago, her days working with Del Close, Chris Farley's formative years, what it was like to mentor people like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Adam McKay and Brian Stack, and a whole lot more. Charna also talks about the future of improv comedy, the fun and family she's found through improv and the importance of comedy in these particularly messed up times. This week's Floating Voter asks, have the last forty-eight hours been game-changers in the political future of Gerry Adams? Has the controversy over the information he had in relation to the murder of prison officer, Brian Stack, finally rattled the teflon Sinn Fein leader? Fine Gael's Alan Farrell named two Sinn Fein politicians, Martin Ferris and Dessie Ellis, under Dail privilege, as the two people that Gerry Adams suggested in an email to the Garda Commissioner might have information about Brian Stack's murder. Then, a day later, Brian Stack's son, Austin, confronted Gerry Adams at a Dublin city centre press conference, calling him 'an absolute disgrace' if he didn't give the name of an IRA figure who has information about his father's murder to gardaí. 'This is a story that is not going away no matter what and Sinn Fein can take that whatever way they want,' emphasised Niall O'Connor who was alongside Kevin Doyle and Philip Ryan for their weekly look at Irish politics.
Should people who paid their water charges be given refunds, or alternatively, should those who didn't pay, be chased down for the money? This was just one of the topics on this week's Floating Voter with Kevin Doyle, Philip Ryan and Niall O'Connor, as they discussed the week in Irish politics. "I don't mind paying for water but you knew it was going to be abolished so why bother in the first place?" asked Philip Ryan. "But the law of the land must be adhered to," said Niall O'Connor. "There is a chasm between those who paid and those who didn't and the government has to try and figure out how to deal with it." "What about the one million people who obeyed the law at the time? I can go to sleep at night knowing I did the right thing in paying for water. There must be equity and fairness." And what about the re-appearance of Bertie Ahern with Fianna Fail in Dublin Central? Should he be welcomed back with open arms? "It will be a step back for Fianna Fail and is not what they want or need to move on from the dark days of the Galway tent," said Ryan. Finally on this week's show, the panel raised the issue of Gerry Adams' email to the Garda Commissioner in February with the names of three Sinn Fein politicians in relation to the murder of Brian Stack in 1983. Since one of those named by Adams says he never knew his name was in the email, the panel asks about the reverberations being felt within Sinn Fein around Adams' actions.
April Fool's Day seems fitting to welcome the hilarious Brian Stack, who you've likely seen on shows like 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Recreation or New Girl! Currently a writer on CBS' Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Brian started on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 1997, winning an Emmy for writing on the show ten years later and appearing as the caped and mustachioed Interrupter, hapless door-to-door salesman Hannigan and the ghost of old-time radio crooner Artie Kendall, among a slew of other characters. He followed Conan to both his truncated tenure at The Tonight Show and his current TBS program, but moved with his family back to New York and joined the Colbert staff this past September. Brian joins me to talk about his love for The Replacements, Late Night's strides to give new artists a stage (even providing Radiohead their U.S. television debut!), what vinyl box set he recently bought despite no longer owning a turntable, his improv comedy heroes while living in Chicago, and yes... what it's like to open for Slipknot. ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky celebrates Brian Stack. After years writing for Conan, Brian moves back to NYC to write for...Late Night with Stephen Colbert! We couldn't be happier, so we're re-releasing Dave's interview with Brian. Congrats, Mr. Stack and family. You're good, sir.
Happy Pride! This week's show is a HIDDEN GEMS medley of delights, featuring never-before-heard tidbit/morsels of chats with MERRILL MARKOE, ANDY KINDLER and BRIAN STACK! Enjoy those gems, pals! And also, relish some brand new observations about why leather harnesses are the best possible things for society, the luxury of being an aging person over irony who just wants to listen to terrible music, a story about a wonderful insane older gal who screamed things about Bush and Cheney at my show, Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie's insane sex, and why David Bryne's hair just screams to have red wine spilled on it. Enjoy everything!
Hello kids! This week we have the the nicest man in comedy, BRIAN STACK. Julie chats with Brian about writing for Conan for 17 years, the dark side of crooners, and the Chicago-produced series, EARLY ADDITION, on which he played a zookeeper. This episode also marks the triumphant return of Hidey (in song)! Plus, some Wes Anderson rumination and just a skootch of Gaysplaining. RIP Mickey Rooney! You would've hated this episode!
Brian Stack (Conan writer for 16 years! UCB!) makes it weird!
On today's show, I talk to "Conan" writer Brian Stack. Taking his first improv lesson in 1987, Brian spent the next decade honing his craft, and performed at Second City for four of those years. In 1997, he joined the writing staff of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien", and since then has stayed with the show through its three iterations, where he's played numerous characters such as Clive Clemmons, Kilty McBagpipes and one of the Slipnutz.Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter!
Chapter 18: Perhaps H.G. Wells (Paul F. Tompkins) will have better luck than previoius chat show hosts in getting a few coherent sentences out of Irish poet, playwright, and sot Brendan Behan (Brian Stack). But probably not. Listen to find out for sure! Why else are you here? What a pointless one-sided conversation this has been! Thanks to The Time Travel Mart and 826LA. 826 National is a nonprofit organization that provides strategic leadership, administration, and other resources to ensure the success of its network of eight writing and tutoring centers. 826 centers offer a variety of inventive programs that provide under-resourced students, ages 6-18, with opportunities to explore their creativity and improve their writing skills. We also aim to help teachers get their classes excited about writing. Our mission is based on the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. Last year our tutoring centers — located in Ann Arbor, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC — served over 29,000 students. Brian Stack has written for Conan O'Brien for 15 years, creating such memorable characters for the show as Artie Kendall, The Interruptor, and Andy Richter's little sister Stacy. Brian joins Jimmy for this live episode of Improv Nerd where they discuss his life in late night television, Brian's days as a Second City performer, and why it's so easy to be a nice guy in show business.
In this episode, I have the immense pleasure and honor of talking about comedy with "Conan" writer/actors Brian McCann and Brian Stack. Both guys are two of the most hilarious men you will ever meet. Stack and McCann both started in the improv world in Chicago and from there got hired to write on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien." They've created and portrayed some of the most memorable characters on late night TV. We cover many topics from performing at Improv Olympic in Chicago to talking to Walter Cronkite while dressed as Frankenstein to having one's bare ass on national television. BRIAN MCCANN'S BIO Brian McCann is a brilliant writer/performer who has had an extremely successful career in television and film. Brian Stack is jealous of this. BRIAN STACK'S BIO Brian Stack has been with Conan since ’97, and has played such characters as The Interrupter, The Ghost Crooner, and Frankenstein. He performed at Chicago’s Second City for 4 years, and still performs regularly at UCB and IO-West. He has also appeared on “30 Rock,” “The Office,” and “Eagleheart.”

Chapter 7: Jeeves & Wooster creator P.G. Wodehouse (Brian Stack) visits with H.G. Wells (Paul F. Tompkins) and it's not long before things get disturbing (in the most British way possible). There is a surprising amount of talk about donkeys. No matter how much talk of donkeys you were expecting, there is more than that.
