Riding Shotgun With Charlie #213 Doug Hamlin NRA, Executive Vice President It's not everyday you get to interview the Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association, let alone take him for a drive around Fairfax. But when the chance comes up, you take it. I owe a huge Thank You to Amanda Suffecool for making the connection. It's pretty cool when Mark Keefe, who I've seen on TV and in magazines, comes out to make sure everything is ready for the interview. Like many folks, firearms were a family tradition for Doug. He learned to hunt from his grandfather and they had a “healthy collection” of firearms, many which were military surplus. When he was old enough, Doug joined the Marines. The years in service were very beneficial in forming the self confidence that people need. It also taught him that life is competitive and that you need to step up or step out. After the Marines, he had a friend who was working with Petersen Publishing Company in Detroit. His friend was doing well. He asked his friend to put in a good word at the Petersen headquarters in LA. He got to meet with Mr. Robert Petersen and was offered a job at Guns & Ammo magazine in the late 1980's. Mr. Petersen, of course, is the largest donor to the National Firearm Museum at NRA HQ.Petersen was a big role model and mentor to Doug. He moved from ad sales to publisher in 4 years. Eventually Petersen moved Doug over to publish MotorTrend Magazine, which was a very important property to Petersen Publishing. Being a bit of a car guy, this was a good fit. The day after getting the new job, Petersen jetted him off to the New York auto show. Doug got to travel the world with Petersen, including trips to London. Often, they'd stop at Purdy and Holland & Holland to “make an investment”. Many of these investments happen to be in the NRA Museum. His NRA roots run deep! Having lunch with Ken Elliot, his former boss at Petersen, it came up that Joe Graham was retiring from NRA Publications. Ken asked if some NRA folks, including Wayne LaPierre, could join them for lunch. Having Doug as the executive director of publications came up in the conversation. He started the position in early 2014, and spent 10 years working as publisher. When LaPierre stepped down in February, there were going to be changes on the Board. There were the “old guard” and the “reformers”. It came down to Doug and Ronnie Barrett. Doug speaks extensively on what happened at the meetings and election. Getting back to NRA HQ after the election and with almost no sleep, Doug got right to work. Doug has ignited a spark to the staff. Everyone at NRA has a much brighter outlook on the future of NRA. They're working to rebuild the trust with membership, as well as grow it to what it was just a few years ago. There's only a small percentage of gun owners who are members. With around 100 million gun owners and only 4 million NRA members, there's a lot of room for expansion. The NRA has several publications and over 40 programs. Things from helping ranges get started, Eddie Eagle, lobbying in every state, several websites, and training. Their publications have been rebranded as NRA Media, and Mark Keefe is the leader there. (And the interview with Mark will be dropping soon!) With all their media, they're reaching 20 million people a month! We do need a strong and stable NRA. I've said this several times, the NRA is taking the arrows from the antis while the other groups are doing work. The antis don't know about the other groups since they are smaller than the NRA. I did get a chance to interview a few others at NRA while I was there. Everyone loves their jobs at NRA and enjoy working there. It's good to see and hear this. Like I said, we need a strong NRA. Favorite quotes: “You better step up or step out.” “They also understand the significance of a strong NRA. It benefits the entire industry when you have a strong NRA.” “You can count on us. You can trust us.” “NRA is a tremendous institution and we're doing a lot to get us back on track and rebuild our membership.” National Rifle Association https://home.nra.org/ Friends of NRA https://www.friendsofnra.org/ NRA Foundation Grants https://www.nrafoundation.org/grants NRA Explore/NRA Programs https://explore.nra.org/ NRA Facebook https://www.facebook.com/NRA NRA Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nra/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. https://DarkHorseSchooling.com In this episode, host Tracy Brinkmann discusses the importance of social media for digital entrepreneurs. He highlights the billions of users worldwide, providing unique opportunities to reach target audiences, build brand awareness, and drive engagement. Tracy offers tips and strategies for creating engaging content, building a following, and measuring results. Tracy emphasizes the crucial role social media marketing plays in a successful digital marketing strategy and provides helpful insights for beginners. Overall, the conversation aims to help entrepreneurs, coaches, and course creators build a business online by leveraging the power of social media. Tracy discusses the importance of social media marketing in a digital marketing strategy. He advises listeners to choose the right platforms based on their target audience and the type of content they need to create, and to create engaging content that adds value to their audience. Leveraging the power of influencers is another key point, as it can help businesses reach new audiences and drive traffic to their website. Paid social media advertising is also recommended as an effective way to generate leads and sales, and engaging with the audience is essential for building a loyal following. The host emphasizes the importance of measuring the results of social media marketing campaigns and making adjustments as needed. By implementing a strategic approach that includes these key points, businesses can create a powerful social media strategy that promotes their brand and drives engagement. Choosing the right social media platform is essential for reaching a target audience and promoting a brand effectively. Factors to consider when selecting a platform include the target audience, type of content, business goals, and competition. Different platforms attract different age groups, demographics, and interests. Instagram is popular amongst younger audiences, while LinkedIn is popular amongst more professional folks. Certain platforms are more visually focused on images and videos, while others are more text-based. Businesses should also consider their competition when it comes to choosing social media platforms. Facebook is great for building a loyal following and promoting a brand through targeted ads, while Instagram is ideal for showcasing products or services through images and videos. Ultimately, picking the right platform for a business's target audience will make building an audience a whole lot easier. The importance of choosing the right social media platform and creating engaging content for businesses was discussed in a recent podcast. Twitter was identified as a more tech-savvy platform, popular among professionals and journalists, while LinkedIn is a professional networking platform used by job seekers and sales professionals to promote their brand. Choosing the right platform can be critical to reaching the target audience and achieving business goals. It is also important to consider the type of content that the target audience wants to see and ensure that it is engaging to drive engagement on social media. Once engagement is established, more people will be exposed to the content. The speakers emphasized that while TikTok is a popular platform, it may not be the best choice for all businesses, and it is important to consider the target audience and their reasons for using a particular platform. Overall, businesses can benefit from considering their target audience, the type of content they want to create, and their competition when choosing the right social media platform and creating engaging content. By choosing the right platforms, by creating engaging content, by leveraging the power of influencers, by using paid advertising, by engaging with your audience and measuring your results, you can create a successful social media campaign that will drive engagement, promote your brand, and drive up sales we all want. At the end of the day, of course it is. But wait, don't leave me just yet. In our next episode, we're going to be discussing the importance of SEO yeah. Search engine optimization. Now, a B and test involves having two versions of a campaign and testing them against each other to determine which one of the two performs better, right? This can include testing different ad formats, different headlines, different call to actions. Some folks call them Ctas and determine which one is the best. And once you have figure out which one's the best, then you make that one your primary. And then you add another one. And then you change one thing. Okay? So before launching any digital marketing campaign of any type, it's important to set clear Achievable goals and objectives. Now, whether you're looking to generate leads, whether you're looking to increase sales, whether you're looking to build your following, build your email list, or drive more traffic to your website, have a clear goal in mind. This is going to help you determine the best approach in your campaign.. Grab your analytics tools. Make sure they're set up. Maybe it's Google Analytics. Maybe it's Facebook Insights. Twitter analytics. All of these can help you drive, track what's going on, track your website traffic, track your engagement rates, or any other key metrics that you need to monitor to reach the goal that you've set right. Use any of these tools. Use all of these tools to monitor the success of your campaign. Respond. Yeah. When they leave a comment, respond. Right. When they message you and messenger respond. Responding to comments and messages on social media is essential for showing your audience that you give a damn. Right. That you value their feedback and their opinions. Respond as promptly as possible and as thoughtfully as possible to the comments and the messages. Right? That's don't just copy and paste bullshit. How does that not aim to provide helpful information and helpful and heart centered responses? And then finally, and I've done this one before, brand ambassadors. Now, brand ambassadors are the influencers who kind of represent the brand on an ongoing basis. They attend events, they participate in product launches, they help create content on your behalf for your brand, or they act almost as this spokesperson of the brand. You see a lot of that out there, folks wearing other folks'gear and what have you. That helps show that influencer marketing is a powerful way to reach new audiences and promote your brand on social media. By choosing the right influencers and collaborating on content using and remember to use those micro influencers too. Don't always have to be the big guys. Measure results and build those relationships. You can create a super successful influencer campaign, drive engagement, and promote your brand. Now, we got two more here, right? Again, some of the metrics you want to look at are engagement rates, follower growth and website traffic to determine whether or not these folks are working or not. And then finally build relationships. Man, a relationship is going to build your sales a lot faster than anything else. So build relationships with influencers to create a long term success. Engaging with influencers by liking and commenting on their posts, sharing their content, and then inviting them into events or product launches that you have going on. [Quotes] When choosing influencers, it's really important to consider their audience, their engagement rate, and their alignment with your brands. Looking for influencers that have a genuine connection with their audience and aligned with your brand's value. And messaging is something you really want to look for. Before you say, hey, do you want to partner together with something because you might be getting folks into your following that really just end up being dead weight and end up leaving later on. Collaborate on Content collaborating with influencers on content is a great way to showcase your products and your services and again reach those new audiences. This could include some sponsored posts, some sponsored videos or stories that showcase your brands or products. There you go. And give folks a behind the scene peak. Use that in your content. Behind the scenes content gives your audience kind of this peek behind the curtain into your brand, into your mind, into your world. This is a great way to showcase your personality, your brand's personality, and really connect with your audience on a whole nother level. All right, so what are we talking about? Creating this engaging content again, is essential for building your following, driving your engagement on social media. So by knowing your audience and using visuals, keeping it short and sweet, providing value, using storytelling, and being consistent, you can create content that resonates with your audience that will help you drive that engagement. This includes providing tips, providing advice, giving industry insights, showcasing your customers success stories, showcasing their problems, showcasing some potential solutions, showcasing that, you know what, the pain points that they're having out there. And here's some ways to solve it. Give them the farm. Give it all away for free. Here's the thing. If you give it all away for free, 99.8% of the people are not going to take action.. They're going to need you to step in and help them. It's just facts and tell you what it is. Now, there is a small percentage of folks that will take your advice and integrate it into their life and go, oh, my God, it worked. Thank you so much. Which almost provide you with proof, social proof right there. Use storytelling. Storytelling is a powerful way to connect with your audience and create this emotional content, right? This emotional connection with them. They're like, even if they don't relate directly to the story, I'm leaning into the microphone so you'll hear me better. Talk about Facebook. With their 2.8 billion active monthly users, facebook is one of the most popular social media platforms out there. It's a great platform for businesses that want to build a loyal following and promote their brand more often through targeted ads. Right? Again, they don't have to be very expensive. We can talk Instagram, as I mentioned earlier, very visual platform, popular amongst a younger crowd, and I say younger than me. You can see the gray beard here, right? It's a great platform for businesses that want to showcase their products or services through images and videos. A driver licensing network is calling for cross party support to make driving education available in all high schools. Only five percent of students leave high school with a full license, and The Driving Change Network says that's down to an inaccessible licensing system. It says the status quo gives an advantage to young people with available cars and people to teach them. The network's chair Joe Graham spoke to Kim Hill.

In this episode, we're joined by Joe Graham, a sales coach and host of the 150K podcast. He has been in sales for over 15 years but transitioned into the sales coaching space over the last few years. Joe grew up in the Midwest where you are expected to get a job and work in it forever. Just like most of us, Joe had no clue about how to navigate sales when he was starting his journey. He was afraid and nervous, especially in public speaking, which could have deterred his success. What is intriguing and inspiring about Joe is how he worked his way up to build his confidence and become an outstanding salesperson. He started by looking for people who were better and further in what he was doing and mimicked them. Joe also leveraged different podcasts to level up, and through trial and error, he was able to make it to the top.Tune in!Key Highlights[00:01] Introduction to the show [00:34] Joe's journey and career background [01:49] Why Joe transitioned from sales to coaching[03:06] How to handle rejection and shift your mindset around NOs in sales [04:17] Mistakes salespeople make when presenting their products [04:40] The importance of storytelling application in sales [05:47] How Joe overcame the fear of public speaking [10:49] Tips on how to pivot back when you go off in sales presentations [12:31] One-on-one Vs. on-stage sales presentation [14:35] How Joe is able to talk with the CEO without feeling intimidated[19:50] How distinguishing yourself from the crowd moves you up [24:33] Tips on how to create stories that match your audiences[30:37] Shifting your sales mindset from money to service focused[36:33] How to balance helping and giving people your product to create value[36:33] The one message Joe would speak for the rest of his life and why[37:51] How to reach out, connect or learn more about JoeNotable Quotes● You are the secret source to your business, so if you don't level up, that's going to be a big opening for a deficiency mindset– Joe Graham.● No might not be No forever; it just might mean No for now because your product or service might not be right for them, or they are not mentally ready to do it. – Joe Graham● In sales, listen more; if you're on stage, know your audience and keep it simple so that you can lead them and they can hear the story behind the words- Joe Graham. ● The greatest public speakers don't follow a perfect course; they follow how their audience respond and how they can connect with them. My guests this week are Meredith TerHaar and Joe Graham In this episode, Meredith, Joe, and I discuss Enneagram, a specific personality type, which turns out to be a helpful tool in parenting. While the Enneagram is very helpful for all of us to make sense of our own personal experience and relationships, it can be especially useful in understanding ourselves more deeply as parents and how it might intersect with our children and their types. The Enneagram focuses on the why and the underlying motivations. We discuss how this personality typing helps us understand the way we experience the world, how we make sense of the things that happen to us, and how we tend to manage our emotions and responses. And to bring it full circle for the audience, we talk about what skills can be developed and what to be aware of for each type. We can use all that information in our quest to become better parents. Joe Graham lives in Holland, Michigan with his wife Tiffany and their two children. He began his leadership career with Young Life, and also served as an executive pastor with Harbor Churches, a multisite church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2018, he formed his coaching practice, and then co-founded Growing with the Enneagram in 2019. He's trained as a professional coach, and along with that work, he's the director of people and culture at Resthaven, a nonprofit faith-based senior living community. Meredith TerHaar is a morning news anchor in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She's an Enneagram coach and co-founder of Growing with the Enneagram, which specializes in corporate workshops and team retreats, as well as couples and one on one coaching. Michael and I talked about how he overcame a crazy past and now he wants to empower people to unleash the real them. Now he hosts multiple events and masterminds. Very interesting guest who is impacting people all over the world. The Coach Mike Fabber is a guy who doesn't know how to sit still. Originally from New York, Mike grew up in a relatively normal family. When his brother, a veteran, committed suicide, it turned Mike's life upside down. His mother started the Joseph Patrick Fabber Memorial Foundation shortly after, which Mike now runs as a non-profit organization providing services to everyone from toddlers to seniors. Alongside his non-profit work, Mike also owns a food truck and a landscaping company. He hosts a morning sports talk show and weekly webcast all while being a professional life coach. In this short episode I talk about community and sharing your message that you can only give.
The Aldrich Family, a popular radio teenage situation comedy (1939-1953), was also presented in films, television and comic books. In the radio series' well-remembered weekly opening exchange, awkward teen Henry's mother called, "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!", and he responded with a breaking adolescent voice, "Com-ing, Mother!". Henry Aldrich was an endearingly bumbling kid growing awkwardly into adolescence, and The Aldrich Family often revolved around Henry's misadventures with the girls and with his friends.Henry Aldrich was the creation of playwright Clifford Goldsmith. Aldrich began on Broadway as a minor character in Goldsmith's play What a Life. Produced and directed by George Abbott, The actor who brought Henry to life on stage was 20-year-old Ezra Stone, who was billed near the bottom as the 20th actor in the cast. Stone was also employed as the play's production assistant. When Rudy Vallee saw the play, he asked Goldsmith to adapt it into some sketches for his radio program, and this was followed in 1938 by a 39-week run of a sketch comedy series on The Kate Smith Hour with Stone continuing in the role of Henry. Kate Smith's director, Bob Welsh, is credited with the creation of the "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!" opening, which eventually became one of the most famous signature sounds in radio. After finding an audience with Kate Smith's listeners, The Aldrich Family was launched in its own series as a summer replacement program for Jack Benny in 1939 on NBC. The Aldriches survived its replacement status and ran from 1939 to 1944. After a brief hiatus, the show moved to CBS, running on Fridays from 1944 until 1946 with sponsors Grape Nuts and Jell-O before moving back to NBC from 1946 to 1951 on Thursdays and, then, as a sustaining program in its final run of September 21, 1952 to April 19, 1953 on Sundays.

He's helped thousands of coaches and business owners reach 6-7 figures and beyond without pushing sales.I sat down with Joe to learn more about his customer-focused approach that prioritizes solving customer's problems over sales. Eugene Makovec has been Editor of the American Bee Journal for only a short time and isn't well known in the Beekeeping world. He is working to change that. He grew up helping his father keep the family's bees, so has a good background in the craft. He spent time building his career for a few years after graduating with a journalism degree, but when he came back to bees when his father was around to help him get started. When that happened, he began working with some local associations, drifting to the communication side and working on newsletters. As newsletter editor, he attended many local and regional meetings and he got to meet a lot of the industry leaders. Eugene was awarded beekeeper of the year and stayed active in the group. He pushed the state of Missouri to change the laws regarding home production and bottling of honey, for which the Association awarded him with a second Beekeeper of the Year. Dadant hired Eugene as editor of ABJ after long time editor Joe Graham retired and after transitional editor, Kirsten Traynor. He likes working with writers and has good advice for someone wanting to write for the magazine. He is gradually moving the magazine in new directions while maintaining much of what the magazine if known for: Common sense, practical information for all levels of beekeepers. HiveAlive is the #1 feed supplement for honeybees worldwide. HiveAlive has been proven to give more bees, more honey, improved overwinter survival and improved intestinal wellbeing. It contains a unique blend of seaweed extracts, thyme and lemongrass. Whilst it is unusual for bees to be fed seaweed, the practice of adding seaweed to other animal feed is long established. Seaweeds are fed to animals for multiple benefits such as productivity, general health, gut health, immune function and nutrition. As well as providing multiple benefits for the bees, HiveAlive is super easy to use and also prevents syrup from fermenting. Simply add just 2 tsp of our concentrated formula per gallon of syrup. Due to demand from beekeepers, we have also created HiveAlive Fondant Patty. This gives all the benefits of HiveAlive in a ready to feed sugar fondant with added vitamins & amino acids. The patties are individually sealed meaning they won't dry out and are thin to allow easy placement close to the cluster. These patties are ideal for feeding colonies over winter and for emergency feeding of colonies.
