The Mishnah in Pirkeh Avot (3:5) cites the following teaching from Rabbi Nehunya Ben Ha'kaneh: כל המקבל עליו עול תורה, מעבירין ממנו עול מלכות ועול דרך ארץ. וכל הפורק ממנו עול תורה, נותנין עליו עול מלכות ועול דרך ארץ. Whoever accepts upon himself the yoke of Torah – the yoke of the government and the yoke of worldly needs are removed from him. And whoever removes from himself the yoke of Torah – the yoke of the government and the yoke of worldly needs are placed upon him. What exactly is the Mishnah's message? How does this happen – that a person who accepts the burden of Torah is relieved of burdens which he would otherwise bear? To answer this question, let us revisit one of the most famous stories in the Tanach . Beneh Yisrael were fighting a war against a militarily superior enemy – the Pelishtim . The Pelishtim sent their general – a frightening giant named Golyat – to frighten and intimidate Beneh Yisrael . Each day, Golyat would approach Beneh Yisrael 's encampment to frighten them. He would shout at them, challenging them to send someone to fight against him, and ridiculing them for being so weak and for waging a war they had no chance of winning. Finally, one day, a young, untrained youngster approached the king, Shaul, and said he was prepared to take on this giant, confident that he could defeat Golyat. Shaul asked him why he was so sure, and the boy explained that he worked as a shepherd tending to his father's flocks, and there were times when lions and bears came to attack the sheep. He successfully fended them off, killing them. If he could kill the lions and bears, this boy confidently asserted, then he could kill Golyat, too. Shaul sent the boy to confront Golyat, and he killed the giant with his slingshot, sending a stone directly to Golyat's forehead. This boy, of course, was David, who eventually became king. Let's imagine for a moment what would have happened if Yishai, David's father, decided that it was too dangerous for his young son to be out in the fields with the sheep. What would have happened if instead of sending David out there, with the all the risks that lurk, he overprotected him, giving him a safe, undemanding job indoors? David would never have gained the skills he needed to defeat Golyat. He would never have become the great general that he was, and he would not have then become the great king that he was. Parents do their children no favors by shielding them from challenges, from difficult situations, from disappointment. Because, as every single adult knows very well, life is full of challenges, difficult situations, and disappointment. While we of course need to protect our children from real danger, we must not protect them from the risk of failure and frustration. To the contrary, the only way they will develop the strength, toughness, and skills needed to persevere, to handle and overcome adversity, is by allowing them to experience adversity when they are young. If a kid brings him a failing grade on a test, the parent's response should not be, “Ok, I'll speak to the teacher and ask to go easier on you next time.” If a kid got into a fight, the parent's response should not be, “Ok, I'll call the other kid's parents and work it out for you.” Absolutely, we must shower our kids with love, and show them that we support them unconditionally and are always trying to understand them. But we need to also allow them to take control of their problems, to learn to handle disappointment, and to grow accustomed to dealing with hardship. I once sat on a panel with an experienced school principal to discuss issues in education. A parent in the audience asked what to do when a kid comes home from school upset because he was cut from the basketball team. My co-panelist's answer was, in my mind, brilliant. He said: “Let him realize that this is how life works. Sometimes you're not as good as everyone else, and so you can't play. Sometimes, other people will win, and you will lose.” This is the harsh reality of life, and something that parents must train their children to recognize. Let us return to the Mishnah cited above. The Mishnah is teaching us that there will always be an עול , a “yoke,” a burden. Life is full of burdens; there is no escaping it, no matter how smart, wealthy, or socially adept a person is. In order to prepare our children for these burdens, we place upon them the עול תורה , the burden of Torah obligation, already when they're young. Before they go out into the world, before they experience real challenges and real hardships, we train them to accept and to submit to the “burden” of Torah. We set limits on their behavior, and we have them develop discipline and restraint. By training our children to accept the עול תורה , we make it so much easier for them later on, when they confront the עול מלכות ועול דרך ארץ , the inevitable burdens of life, which they will be fully prepared to confront. We hope and pray that Hashem make our children's lives pleasant and smooth. But even as we pray, we are to prepare them for the realities of life by training them to yield to the עול תורה , to the obligations that the Torah assigns to us.

Teach your children diligently. Remember the Lord faithfully. Don't forget to see and point out His blessings. Prov 24:3-4 Prov 22:6 Prov 13:22 2Kings 20:15-18 You can't be perfect but you can be faithful. Here are 14 characteristics from James that Godly parents will stress with their kids: 1. James 1:1 - Remember who they are and whose they are. Remember who God is. Have a loving view of the church. 2. James 1: 2-12 Help them when they go thru trials to trust God, to rejoice and learn to endure. 3. James 1: 13-18 - Help your children know how to properly respond to temptation. God's will is good, ALWAYS good and is light – follow it. 4. James 1:19 -21 - Help them to realize there's a time to be quick and to be slow and to put away and to receive. Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, put away sin and receive grace. 5. James 1:22-27 Help your children to love and learn to the apply God's Word 6. James 2:1-13 Help them not to quickly and wrongly judge others 7. James 2:14-26 Help them to see that show-n-tell is more than just a game. Some people who tell little show a lot. Faith that loves God and expresses itself in a wide variety of ways. 8. James 3:1-12 Help your children to understand the weight of their words. 9. James 3:13-18 Help them to be more than “bright”, help them to be wise. See the wisdom of God. 10. James 4:1-12 Help them to know that pride and selfishness always leads to quarrels and wars. Humility and trustworthiness will lead to righteousness. 11. James 4:13-17 Error of presumption — making plans must never leave God out of the picture. 12. James 5: 1-12 Teach them that God WILL judge the wicked. 13. James 5:9 Teach them not to grumble or complain (Phil 2:14) 14. James 5:13-20 Teach them the value and place of the community of believers, God's people should be known for prayer, praise, concern for one another, for their confession of sin, and for bringing back the wanderer.   Duration 40:43

I was on the edge of my seat while I read her book, I was on the edge of my seat during this conversation, and I was on the edge of my seat while I edited it. You're going to love this one and you may even listen to it twice! If it's a favorite of yours, like it's a favorite of mine, share it with friends and family and make sure to subscribe and leave a review. In this week's episode of the podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Madeline Levine, a renowned psychologist and expert on child development with 40 years experience. One of the main themes of the conversation was the importance of understanding our failures in order to discover our strengths. Dr. Levine noted that often times, we learn the most from our mistakes and that they can serve as valuable learning experiences. She calls it trial-and-error learning instead of failure. Another key point that was discussed was the idea that most people do not have a straight path to success. Dr. Levine emphasized the importance of recognizing that life is a series of small challenges, and if we can meet them, we go on to bigger and bigger challenges. Additionally, Dr. Levine highlighted the damaging effects of being an over-involved parent and the importance of allowing our children to experience unhappiness. She also discussed the lack of management skills among today's youth, specifically in areas such as risk management and conflict management. Dr. Levine also urged listeners to think long and hard about what's going to matter in the long run, and emphasized the link between optimism and healthy mental health outcomes. She even talked about preparing ourselves for when our kids leave the nest. Overall, this is a thought-provoking and enlightening conversation with Dr. Levine, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did! High school is a critical age for students. As our kids' social lives expand, it can be harder to keep them interested in learning. And the skills that they are taught in school may not be the most readily applicable for their future. So what can be done to improve that system? Giant Leaps Learning provides an after school enrichment program that helps prepare creative and curious students for life in college, the workplace, and beyond. As parents, our tendency is to want to make life easy for our kids.  However, a life of constant and immediate happiness, doesn't bring GROWTH.  If we want our kids to be strengthened, we must help them embrace challenges and obstacles as OPPORTUNITIES for their world to expand and  for their abilities to increase.  Comfort zones are pretty dull places to live.  And, usually God's design for our lives, is far bigger than our comfort zone. In this episode,  I'm joined by my daughter Abby to discuss the benefits of stepping out of our comfort zone, overcoming obstacles, and the good changes that can come from challenges. This is the third week of the series on Preparing our Kids to SOAR.  See episodes 107 and 108 for parts one and two of the series.Bible Verse Philippians 4:8

In this podcast episode, I break the study down, offer some of my own insight, and share some practical steps to take to help advance technology education Background of study: This has an impact on workforce preparedness and the US economy. By 2020, 77% of all jobs will require some sort of technology skill (that’s only a year away).  There will be 1 million more computing jobs than there are workers to fill the need. Study: Surveyed 2,000 K-12 teachers in Spring 2018 in various schools, experience levels, and grade levels. Purpose is to explore strategies to help teachers develop student technology and career-readiness skills. Results Six Trends were observed in the results: Most K-12 teachers are not comfortable teaching higher order technology skills, such as data analytics, programming, web design, robotics 10% felt comfortable, grade level, school affluence, teacher experience level had no impact on results Teachers were most comfortable teaching web design and robotics Teachers were least comfortable teaching app design/creation, CAD, and computer programming High schools are offering technology-related courses, but only 35% of teachers report offering web design / app building courses 20% say their school offers data analytics Course topics are Computer Fundamentals Graphic design CAD Web design Robotics Computer Programming App design/creation Data Analytics Students don’t spend a lot of time actively practicing the skills needed for job readiness 60% of technology use is passive (videos, visiting websites) 32% of technology use is active (coding, creating videos, performing data analysis) Teachers want more support from their districts 79% would like more professional development on technology related topics 81% would like more release time to attend professional development 81% would like more funds to attend professional development 81% would like more curriculum plans and course materials Technology access in schools is on the rise, lack of access at home makes it challenging for teachers to integrate technology into the classroom 36% report their school is a 1:1 device school 48% say that some students don’t have access to devices 54% of teachers say students don’t have access to the internet at home Students in underserved schools are more likely to lack access to technology at home 64% of teachers at underserved schools state that do not have access to devices at home 69% report that students don’t have access to the internet at home About 1/3 of teachers at affluent schools report students don’t have access to devices at home or the internet Discussion: Need to bridge gap between the need for teaching higher level technology skills and teacher’s confidence to do so Advocate for support and training Balance consuming technology and creating technology to provide students with the skills needed to be career-ready References PWC (2018). Part Two of our recent PTF Meeting with the new Head of Schools, Dr. Erik Konsmo. If you missed Part One, check out Episode 072 of the Horizon Prep Lioncast. It's a more casual chat with Dr. Konsmo, talking about his background and what he's like away from school. On this episode, Dr. Konsmo talks about the kind of administrator he wants to be, using the example of Nehemiah. Dr. Konsmo explains how Nehemiah was a man of prayer, a man of vision, a man of unity, a man with high expectations for his people and their ethics, a man of focus, and a man of celebration. Dr. Konsmo relates all those qualities to Horizon Prep and how Nehemiah is an example for him to follow as an administrator working as to the Lord.
