Welcome to Tribe Talkin' Episode 3.  This week we talk about Safety Culture raising $34 Million at a $2.7 Billion valuation, $600 Million higher than their last raise. This bucks the trend we've seen in valuations and we discuss some interesting aspects of the Safety Culture story. And spoiler alert! We have the Founder, Luke Anear on next week's Founder Focus episode and we're looking forward to a deep dive. We see Safety Culture's raise as a signal that the markets are in a good place We also talk about Rokt moving towards its IPO. Their "party" culture is also under the microscope at the moment, and we talk about how such cultures are being currently viewed. We discuss episode 2 of the series “The Founder”, featuring Canva and its founders Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrect and Cameron Adams. We unpack the parts of the story we found most interesting, and try and distil lessons for entrepreneurs to consider in their own journey. Other news includes Airtree warning there will be more failures, and why we think it's interesting they felt compelled to even do that, given the business we are all in. We talk about the Openview Partners report into VC valuations, which provides some really interesting insights into the current valuation trajectory, as well as visually demonstrating which companies get the highest valuations and why. https://openviewpartners.com/2022-saas-benchmarks-report/ This report provides an excellent dataset on the growth rates achieved with companies that have diversity in their management team.  This is an excellent segue way into our deep dive subject which is diversity in STEM, and the recent draft recommendations from the Diversity in STEM review which was published this week. https://www.industry.gov.au/science-technology-and-innovation/diversity-stem-review Whilst diversity and equality is a core value of Tribe, STEM industries are the lifeblood of the companies we invest in. As such, this is an extremely important topic for VC investors, and the founders we invest in. As always we appreciate feedback, and don't forget to leave a rating whilst you're here. www.tribeglobal.vc  hello@tribeglobal.vc

Canva belongs to a small group of products that change how people and brands completely shirt their approach to design. Our guest today, Cameron Adams, is the Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Canva, he shares how the product was built and how it was able to disrupt the design industry. He shares what he learned from building a product that would get massive adoption after working on Google Wave, a project which Google shut down because of low Monthly Active Users. He took the unconventional approach of waiting a long time to release the product, to ensure that it would launch a product that users wouldn't stay with. They courted the press through the power of storytelling and were able to have a big launch and sustain that growth with smaller bloggers covering the tool. More on Cameron's story how he came to America and failed to raise the round he'd hoped for, how his other creative endeavors like DJ'ing influence his design and the difference between graphic design and business design on this episode of How I Grew This. Canva co-founder Cameron Adams reveals how the Canva teams pulled out all stops in the past 12 months to fuel massive growth, leaping from serving individuals' design needs, to servicing much larger corporates' needs, and how that's paying off. While much of Canva's product is still free, Canva Pro team has launched a new tool giving paying customers access to some 60 million different photos and illustrations, up from just 5 million available previously. Cameron also reveals how translating their online offering into more than 100 languages has fed strong growth in non-English speaking markets, like Brazil and Russia. He talks about the lessons he learned at Google working on a secretive project with the legendary Lars Rasmussen, that he brought to Canva; and how his net worth  is a “real opportunity” to help the world, going towards needy projects, rather than simply buying “more stuff”. The entrepreneurial journey of this home-grown emerging business leader  is both humble and inspiring, and well worth a listen. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cameron Adams began mucking around with computer games as a kid, in the back room of his dad's suburban Melbourne computer shop. After uni he parlayed that computer literacy, fuelled by a passion for graphic design, into a job at Google. But his entrepreneurial spirit serendipitously led him to meet 2 young people with a dream - Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht wanted to transform their small school year book production company into a global vision to democratise design online, allowing anyone & everyone to design anything online through the design tools platform - from lost dog flyers, to concert posters, small business brochures, websites, now even corporate online presentations. Cameron Adams shared that vision and the home-grown tech startup Canva was born. With funding from Silicon Valley and Australian venture capital investors, Canva has mushroomed. From just the 3 founders at the start, it now employs over 1,000 employees, across 5 offices around the world, with Cameron as Chief Product Officer. The Sydney-based Canva's most recent funding round in June 2020, valued the company at over $8 billion, with Cameron Adams a billionaire. In recent years they've doubled both revenue and user growth. As Canva approaches it's 8th anniversary, it celebrates over 30 million active users. How did they do it? Take a listen. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My guest today is Cameron Adams. Cameron is the co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Canva, the graphic design tool website that recently was valued at over $1 billion. In today's interview, we talk to Cameron about his long and checkered career. We talk about his work on Google Wave, which seemed to be a product way ahead of its time - and which gathered some incredible buzz but saw limited adoption. In his next startup Fluent, he seemed to have everything going for him with a huge surge of user interest - in spite of which he had to shut it down. Cameron was third time lucky with Canva, which has a steady start and growth before it really took off in the last couple of years. In today's conversation we talk about Canva's gradual rise and the forces behind it. We go into some of the key product decisions they've made in their pursuit of the mission of making design accessible to everyone.KEY HIGHLIGHTSThe promise of Google Wave to rethink email as it was reimagined for the modern age - and what the problem with this approach was.How the economics of Cameron's next startup Fluent didn't quite work out even though it had 80000 users on its waitlist. What inspired Canva's onboarding process to make the design process seem less intimidating to users. How the proliferation of visual media like Facebook, Instagram & Pinterest helped drive the adoption of Canva. How Canva built up relationships with bloggers & social media marketers to support its launch & post-launch growth. How Canva's growth after its early year 1 growth was a function of its growth marketing strategy that was intentional about bringing users in the door. What Canva learned about why people tended to go with low-quality imagery - and how this insight led Canva to pick the freemium model and to offer much lower prices than alternatives. What Cameron had to learn as he progressed from a creator to a manager of large teams as Canva scaled. What drove Canva's huge wave of growth in 2017 that converted its user growth into tangible revenue growth.Check out the full transcript and show notes here:https://howthingsgrow.co/making-design-accessible-to-the-world-with-cameron-adamsco-founder-cpo-at-canva/**Get more goodies here:http://MobileUserAcquisitionShow.comhttp://RocketShipHQ.comhttp://RocketShipHQ.com/blog
