In this episode, we're learning all about the incredible history of candy manufacturing in Boston. With Jeremy Spindler of Spindler Confections as our guide, we cover the meteoric rise and slow demise of a signature New England industry — it's a bittersweet tale, to say the least. And as a bonus, it's taste test time! Listen as I sample some of the area's classic candies, including the famous/infamous Necco wafers. Let's just say that times — and tastes — have changed. Here's video of the Gloucester Greasy Pole and info on the upcoming St. Peter's Fiesta (June 16-30). Despite the alternative media pushback against eating insects, there are actually bugs in our food already, and have been for a long time - even if there far fewer insect contaminants in food today than in the past. But these “food defects” - according to the FDA - are certainly different than the gimmick of insect candy, or the attempt to replace animal protein with insect protein as part of a plan to reduce resource and water usage. In the latter case, however, things like oats and lentils are forgotten, as are veggie or mushroom burgers forgotten for gm-soy-fake-meat and regular meat burgers. So much of our food, including Halloween candy, has insect parts or derivatives in them already, from carmine to cochineal. And despite food colorings possibly causing infertility, many will eat them while citing infertility as the reason they refused mRNA technology. Paleo diets are also very popular today although our ancestors probably ate more insects, along with roots, seeds, plants, etc., rather than giant hunks of meat bought at a grocery store. They also died at 30 and pooped in holes. For others, you can't be pro-dairy and anti-‘rape culture'. In the blend of all these contradictions we find the use of chemicals and genetic engineering conveniently forgotten. The opposition to eating bugs and the WEF is a right-wing version of virtue signaling and disgust, despite the presence of bugs in our food forever. The same push is also advocated for by left-wing virtue signalers who ignore simple alternatives to meat. Eating bugs is not about peasant food, it is about demoralization and dehumanization. That is the candy coated conspiracy which grows from clicks, cash, and clout. It is a world of double think and tribalism. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

Chiclets, how boiling plant sap leads to the discovery of chewing gum. One partner runs away. The other makes millions. How not to be blinded by the pursuit of the wrong objective. David Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Griffin Service Ad] David Young: Stephen Semple, when you told me that we were going to talk about the brand that we're going to talk about today, it instantly took me back, oh my gosh, 30 years or so to spring break in Mexico, where there were these little kids that would come up to you all day long as you walk down the streets and what they had in their hands was a box of Chiclets. And they were just trying to get you to buy some Chiclets from them. I always thought that was, that was cool. Little tiny entrepreneurs. Stephen Semple: Well, and what's also funny about it is there's a real Mexico tie in to this story about Chiclets. David Young: Oh, I believe it. I believe it. Stephen Semple: And this is a fun story. It covers Native Americans, the deposed Mexican President Santa Anna, a desire to make rubber, and Santa Anna wanted to return as president of Mexico. All of those things actually contributed to the creation of Chiclets gum. David Young: Oh, how cool is that? I can't wait to find out more. Stephen Semple: So if you're ready for the ride, Chiclets was originally founded in 1900 by Thomas Adams in New York. It's a pretty old brand. By 1962, the company had a bottom line income. This is a net income. This is not top line sales in 1962 dollars of just under $10 million. David Young: Holy cow. Stephen Semple: And at that time it was sold to Warner Lambert for 200 million bucks. So started in 1900, 1962 sold for $200,000,000 in 1962 dollars. So the founder did well. David Young: That's pretty amazing. Stephen Semple: The founder did well. It became a real empire just around Chiclets gum. But let's start at the beginning. When European settlers arrived in the New World, they found Native Americans were chewing spruce tree resin. And so, this seemed like a good idea. So they adapted the idea and the newcomers joined on the fun of chewing spruce tree resin. And this was actually such a good idea that in 1840, John Curtis developed the first commercial spruce tree gum by boiling the resin, cutting it into strips, and then coating it with corn starch so it wouldn't stick together. In the early 1850s, he constructed the first chewing gum factory in Portland, Maine. It became the first factory making chewing gum from spruces tree resin. Stephen Semple: But a couple problems turned out that it wasn't actually all that great tasting and it became really brittle when chewed. So all sorts of different players tried all sorts of different things to try to solve this problem such as adding paraffin wax and things along that lines. So now comes the second player in our story. The second player in our story is the exiled Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Now, Santa Anna brought with him Chiclet. Now, Chiclet is actually a plant. It's the resin from a plant that grows in Mexico. David Young: So it's not spruce. Stephen Semple: It's not spruce. David Young: Now this isn't the same Santa Anna from the Alamo. Stephen Semple: Yes, it is. David Young: Really? Stephen Semple: The same dude. He actually was President in Mexico for 11 non-consecutive terms over 22 years. He got deposed and exiled and all this other stuff, and he shows with this chicle,

We take a realistic look into the unrealistic world of romantic comedies that we LOVE to hate. This Week -Candy Coated Christmas (2021) Starring: Molly McCook, Lee Garlington, and Aaron O'Connell.A wonderful movie where a woman acts like she's too good for mint. We ask the tough questions this week…How much mint do you have to sell to turn a profit? Is the Winters' house a Bed and Breakfast? If so, where are the guests? Is Ree Drummond's character evil? Generally speaking, we tend to think of the confidence journey as only positive, painted with Instagram-worthy quotes and images of us luxuriating on a beach being #unbothered. We have a superficial perception that confidence is something we see, something that is 'candy-coated" and only looks the way we see it portrayed on TV and social media. We don't acknowledge the challenges that are necessary in order to become confident women, and this episode sets the record straight. A feminist revenge film about a woman that exposes predatory men and their “unknowing” predatory ways. A very unnerving, uncomfortable, but beautifully shot and even at times funny film. Pretty Young Woman's genre transitions and tonal shifts are used at its advantage in keeping us interested as to what REALLY was going to happen next. We also talk about the lack of empathy that is shown in the film that reflects society & the “obvious bad” that isn't so obvious to a lot of people in the real world. We really enjoyed the “not very scary” Halloween specials that would show up on TV every October. What were some of your favorites? We discuss them as we indulge in a variety of popular 80’s candy and pit them up against today’s choices. In the NEWS Willow comes to Disney+ as a series with director Jon M. We hear you, Partysans! At least, we hear you when you call us at PARTYGAM(E)! We finally get around to listening and responding to your phone calls in this episode. Please keep calling; we'll do better. We also ate some candy, went to the video store, and pitted our beasts against one another in the arena of "sport." WHAT THE FOOD We started with something you can still actually buy in a store: Skittles! Well, not normal Skittles of course, because why? No, these were faux-gurt covered Skittles. Yeah. Sheila Cowling, a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales in Purcellville, vividly remembers the smells of the Christkindl market of West Berlin: the air filled with the scent of spiced cider, mulled wine and gingerbread cookies. Inspired by the fragrant treats, Cowling began baking her own. In the 30 years since her time in Berlin, she’s created a variety of gingerbread structures — a carousel, a haunted house, even a gingerbread veterinary clinic with candy animals peeking out of the windows. As she’s learned from experience, “You can make anything out of gingerbread.” Read the full story.

M. Carlton joined us to talk about being part of leading professional reverse engineering team at Senr.io. We discussed her Embedded Systems talk about IoT and in particular Devil’s Ivy (Check out the important ROP video to better understand the key concept ). In this particular case, they found that the M300 camera model using GSOAP (SOAP) parse for buffer overflow. Not only did this issue allow spread quickly as a DOS among the M300 cameras but over 200 other Axis cameras (Hurray for code-reuse) due to using the third party code library. M. uses several tools in her work: IDA Pro Binwalk Nmap Debuggers like gdb Multimeters and oscilloscopes VMWare She had some excellent suggestions for improving the odds of NOT getting hacked: Put a password on any consoles and let it be changeable. Anticipate issues by performing security reviews. Be wary of any third party libraries you use. If there are updates to these libraries, prepare to update quickly. Make sure your systems are field patchable/updateable, securely. Limit surface area. Limit the ability for others to analyze your system by removing/disabling consoles, UARTs, features, and JTAG interfaces. Put more gates/obstacles on how easily any found exploits can be used in the system. Unearth any default credentials used in your system and resolve. In the worse case, plan in advance for a security breach to expedite deployment. Have comments or suggestion names for us? Find us on twitter @unnamed_show, or email us at show@unnamedre.com.
