BACKGROUND Inspired by Cape Town's radiant energy and creative demeanour, our new premium offering - The Collector's Reserve - is a unique range specially crafted by our winemakers using only the finest grapes from Cape Town's best vineyards. To truly connect the Winelands and City, we have handpicked prominent landmarks in Cape Town and commissioned a vibrant Capetonian artist - Theo Vorster - to impart his vision of these landmarks onto each bottle. This range has been designed as a collector's item for both wine and art lovers alike. WHAT'S IN A NAME The Company's Garden in Cape Town dates back to when fresh produce and supplies were first provided to ships rounding the Cape. Although originally a vegetable garden, it was not long before the first Chenin Blanc vineyards were planted, and today, the Gardens are recognised for their contribution to the Cape's horticultural heritage. The Chenin Blanc is a true tribute to these Gardens and the origins of Chenin Blanc in the Cape of Good Hope. THE VINEYARDS The grapes were selected from two vineyards planted in deep soil with formations of greywacke, rocky area, planted on South-Western and Southern slopes with predominately East-West row-direction to protect the grapes from direct sunlight. Vertical shoot-positioned trellis systems were used with an excellent balance between growth and production. The bunches were exposed to sufficient sunlight for flavour development from an early stage of development. THE WINEMAKING The grapes were hand-harvested in the early morning. The juice was cold-settled with regular lees stirring for three days before being divided into different portions for fermenting. Of these portions 20% was cold fermented in stainless-steel tank, racked after fermentation and left on the fine lees for nine months, while 45% was fermented and matured for nine months in a combination of new and older French oak, 30% was fermented with an indigenous yeast culture in barrels to add complexity, 3% was fermented in Amphoras on the skins for flintiness and 2% was naturally fermented in barrels. All the components were matured on the lees for nine months. Before blending, a barrel selection was done to select only the best barrels for this unique wine. Capetonian barista Phuti Mmotla has scooped the top prize in this year's Starbucks best barista in EMEA competition held in Milan in Italy. It was Kenyan coffee, his skill in latte art and a signature cold brew that impressed the judges. Mmotla told BizNews about the experience of going to Starbucks Milano Roastery and how childhood memories of cookies and milk gave him the idea for his signature cold brew. From a background where he mostly drank tea, Mmotla fell in love with coffee when he started working in Cape Town for Rand Capital Coffee, the Starbucks licensee for sub-Saharan Africa, as a partner. And if you ever wondered how baristas draw those nifty little pictures in your latte, he reveals how it is done. – Linda van Tilburg Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Joining Pippa on the virtual couch today is a former Capetonian who, at the age of 35, made a decision to start living life more boldly and courageously, to embrace the sense of adventure that he had always harboured in his heart, but never really acted on before. His name is Ron Rutland, he's big, big rugby fan, and his new life began with an epic trip through Africa visiting every single country en route to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. It was a life changing trip, but it wasn't enough to quell Ron's curiosity about the world, and so he first went trekking across Mongolia in 2017, and then set up another epic adventure to get himself to Japan in time for the world cup 2019. The story of that journey has recently been released as a documentary called “Everything in Between – the Race to the Rugby World Cup”. It's screening on Showmax as we speak, and is going to delight both sports fans and armchair travellers alike. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some artists wait a lifetime for a charting single, others wait a lifetime for a number one - but for talented Capetonian artist, it's more a matter of when, rather than if. On the 11th of July 2020, a week after release, Craig Lucas' new single, 'Happy', made it onto the Kfm Top 40 with Carl Wastie, breaking a then-record for the highest debuting South African artist, as he entered the award-winning chart at no.13. This was Craig's 5th solo single and the 5th song of his to chart - putting him in the unique (and record-breaking) position of the only South African artist to have every song he's released chart: from 'I Said This' to 'Smother' (and the 'Smother' duet with Paxton Fielies) to 'Hearts Exposed' and 'Anti-Sociable'. Four weeks after debuting on the Kfm Top 40, 'Happy' shot to no.1 on the Kfm Top 40, claiming the prime spot on Saturday, 1 August 2020. This is Craig's second no.1 on the SA Radio Awards' Best Weekend Show & Best Music Show - the former time with his hit single, 'Smother (Duet)' with Paxton. Carl Wastie called Craig up to surprise him with the news under the pretense of finding out more about his Women's Month concert, which took place on Saturday evening, following the interview. After a couple of years in the oil business, a youthful Sean Summers was lining up a move into computers with IBM before fate intervened. A chance discussion with his parents’ dinner guests launched him into a career with Raymond Ackerman’s then embryonic Pick n Pay, a journey which ended in 2008 when the duo “fell out of love”. At the time Summers had been Pick n Pay’s CEO for 11 years and helped steer it to the top of the SA retailing tree, a position it has since lost. After emigrating to the UK, the Capetonian teamed up with Markus Jooste’s Steinhoff Group and now runs its 450 store UK beds and furniture chains. In this in-depth interview, Summers gives a masterclass in retailing, talks about his close relationships with the iconic Ackerman and Jooste, and offers some pointed insights into mainly self-inflicted challenges facing his homeland.
