✔️ The Basics Work Every Time | Monday Morning Pep Talk #273 In this episode, I walk you through one of the most powerful stories I've ever heard about mastery, consistency, and elite performance — told by keynote speaker and performance coach Alan Stein Jr. Alan was invited to the first-ever Kobe Bryant Skills Academy in 2007. What he witnessed at 4:00 a.m. in a quiet Los Angeles gym changed his view of high performance forever. Kobe wasn't doing anything flashy — he was locked in on the basics. Footwork. Jab steps. Pivots. The kind of drills most athletes leave behind early in their career. But true masters? They repeat what works. That's the essence of this message: Success lives in the fundamentals. ✔️ What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why basic ≠ easy — and why most people confuse the two What separates elite performers from average ones Why the shiny new tactic is often a distraction How to apply the principle that “success leaves clues” A weekly challenge to double down on your fundamentals

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we will be navigating feelings as we try to find a balance between empathy and self-reflection. How are you feeling? How do those feelings impact another person's feelings? Can you feel what another person is feeling? Are you as confused as I am by this line of questioning? Well, today, we're diving into the world of feelings—yes, that deep, squishy part of being human! We live in a culture that champions the importance of respecting feelings, which is awesome…but sometimes we can get so wrapped up in our feelings that we forget to take a peek at the other side of the coin. What happens when we're hyper-focused on our own emotions? Could we be missing out on understanding someone else's? Let's explore the fine art of balancing self-reflection with empathy, of making room for our own feelings and those of the people around us. It's all about connecting, growing, and creating more ‘aha' moments in our relationships—with a little bit of humor, honesty, and a lot of heart along the way! When I was growing up, the question, ‘How do you feel?' had a whole different vibe. It was usually about the basics—are you hot, cold, tired, or maybe just a little hungry? When it came to health, the answer was usually straightforward: sick or not. If you were really under the weather, maybe you'd get a day at home or a trip to the nurse's office. Simple. But today, that question has become a lot more nuanced. Now, asking ‘How do you feel?' can open up a world of responses, as unique and layered as each person who answers it. Don't get me wrong, a focus on exploring more about feelings has helped normalize mental health discussions, reduced stigma, and empowered people to speak openly about their struggles. It has illuminated the need for self-awareness, stress management, and setting boundaries. However, focusing too much on personal feelings can sometimes limit our ability to connect empathetically with others. It can even contribute to misunderstandings in relationships if one person is more focused on expressing their own feelings versus listening to understand someone else's emotional struggles. Ever heard of emotional myopia – when we see only our own emotional perspective and may inadvertently neglect the feelings of others? Martha Beck starts this discussion with Seeing Your Emotional Blind Spots found on her blog At Everyday Speach I found an angle we need to cover; Understanding Others: The Importance of Perspective-Taking At the Worry Games, Lisa Branson shares another perspective on Why You Should Stop Focusing on Your Feelings On TEDx Talks I found some wise information on Validation, and communication through Empathy by Naomi Feil Recognizing when someone is playing on our emotions to push their own agenda can be tricky, but there are a few red flags that can help us stay aware: Intense Emotional Appeal If someone is leaning heavily into emotions—guilt, pity, anger, or fear—without much substance or reason behind it, it's a sign they might be trying to sway you emotionally rather than engaging in a balanced conversation. Notice if they're frequently amplifying emotional language or using words designed to make you feel extreme sympathy or urgency. Lack of Listening and Empathy People pushing an agenda will often avoid giving space to your feelings, opinions, or questions. If they dominate the conversation, rarely let you speak, or dismiss your perspective when you do, it's a red flag. Genuine conversations include active listening; if it feels one-sided, trust that instinct. Deflection and Manipulation of Responsibility When you try to express your own emotions or viewpoints, do they quickly shift the topic back to their own concerns or play down your feelings? Manipulators often turn things around to make you feel responsible for their emotions, a tactic to keep the focus on themselves and their goals. Inconsistent Narratives or Exaggerations Listen for inconsistencies or exaggerated claims that don't add up. Manipulators may bend the truth or overemphasize details to paint themselves in a certain light or to steer you toward a specific reaction. If something seems “off” or overly dramatic, trust your gut. Pressure to Make Quick Decisions People pushing an agenda often create a sense of urgency, pressuring you to act or decide quickly. They know that when we're rushed, we're less likely to question or analyze their motives. Pausing and asking for time to think it over is often the best way to get clarity. Using Past Events as Emotional Leverage Manipulators might bring up past events or your own vulnerabilities to make you feel indebted to them or guilty. They might even use their past generosity or sacrifices as leverage, nudging you to go along with their wishes. This type of guilt-tripping is a clear sign they're trying to steer your emotions to benefit their narrative. Trust Your Gut Sometimes, the simplest way to recognize manipulation is by trusting your own feelings. If you feel drained, confused, or somehow “off” after talking with them, this might be your intuition signaling that their intentions aren't fully in your best interest. By keeping an eye out for these signs, you can protect your emotional space and engage with people on your own terms, setting boundaries and staying true to your values. CHALLENGE: Look beyond your own feelings and consider the bigger picture—what are others experiencing, and how can you make space for that? By balancing self-reflection with empathy, you can create deeper, more meaningful connections that benefit everyone involved. I Know YOU Can Do It!
This activity wrecked me. I continue to do it often. I often believe the lie that I'm on my own. I believe that I have to prove my worth by clinching my fists and working harder. I forgot that God is my father. I operate best when I have a childlike faith and I operate as a little boy who wants to make his father proud. This time of year feels like we are trapped in a hole and are waiting to get out. There seems to be so much pressure around performing and showing up at this time, when truly all we should be doing is honoring our energy and taking space. In this episode, Tara and Alyssa chat about why this time is important for recouping and taking a moment to breathe before diving into resolutions. It is also important to remember that nature is resting and burrowing away and won't begin to bloom or push itself to grow until spring. Take this as your cue to trust yourself and take this new year as a time to think ahead and love where you are now. It's common for people to treat being busy as a badge of honor. There's guilt associated with not being productive and getting things done. This episode is about the overlooked importance of play. One of the reasons that people are so burned out and miserable is the lack of play, especially quality play with the ones they love. Our book club just finished Brene Brown's The Gifts Of Imperfection, where she talks about how we struggle with ideas of play and rest. I'm going to talk about how play is a critical aspect of the human experience and so important that we need to put resources towards having fun, playful experiences with our families and spending time doing fun things that aren't aimed at being productive. Episode Highlights: [02:29] Our book club just finished up The Gifts Of Imperfection by Brene Brown. She's one of my favorite authors, and I highly recommend her work. [02:53] One of the things she talks about is how we struggle with the idea of play and rest, because it goes along with the stigma of laziness. [03:11] We identify our importance and value by our busyness and overworking. We are proud of how over-packed our calendars are. [04:12] Instead of accepting busyness, we need to find a cure for it. [04:50] Play shouldn't be structured on something that we design. Play is unstructured time spent without a purpose. [06:26] We need to change the paradigm of saying no to our kids when they ask us to play, because we need to be doing productive work all of the time. Without play, we end up with exhaustion and discontent. [08:08] Board games and family game nights create space to play. [09:32] The studies are clear that the joy of play makes us infinitely more productive. [10:09] We need to make space to play. It reduces anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. [10:49] Play is time spent without purpose, something you don't want to end, and it leads to a loss of self-consciousness. [12:44] Through trial and error, figure out what works for you and your family. Give yourself permission to prioritize spending around your play. [14:31] What needs to happen for you to give yourself permission to play? [16:06] Remind your brain that play will make you more productive. [17:37] Play needs to be fulfilling, not just staring at a device. [17:56] Challenge: Look at your calendar and notice how overbooked you and your family are. Cut out the things that aren't fun and spend some money on what you and your family really enjoy and find engaging. In today’s episode I’m going to teach you the 3 Psychological Sales Principles that my team and I use every day. This applies to monetary sales as well as selling people on your ideas, projects, and collaborations (aka pitching). Remember - The most powerful psychological sales principles are: People want what they want because they want something else Find the hidden questions People lack permission Research - Before you make your next purchase, take a moment and identify what some of your underlying desires are that drive your decisions? The next time you ask a question, stop and see what you are really asking. And the next time you feel like you can’t/shouldn’t do something that you believe is actually a smart choice, see if there is a lack of permission you’re facing. Recognizing these principles will help you recognize them in others.Challenge - Look for all three of these principles the next time you talk to someone. See what their true wants are, search for hidden questions and explore if there are areas where they are lacking permission.

How much of your worth is measured on what you do and what you think you are instead of WHO you are? Let’s not beat around the bush and just get right into it. Who are you, who do you aspire to be, and who do you want to see YOU? It’s important to separate accomplishments and accolades, trials and failures, to find the real you. Your core. The you that’s inherent even when the world has tried to shape and mold you to fit their whims. Let’s focus on finding you, the who vs the what. So what do you see when you look in the mirror? Right now I see someone in desperate need of a haircut, color, & facial. And if I’m not required to actually look decent in a reasonably short amount of time, I’m going to forget how. But I also see someone who is human. Someone who is resilient, patient, positive, enthusiastic, passionate, driven, dedicated….but human. Someone who has been challenged and as a result hasn’t always been kind to herself. Someone who looks to solve and fix the world’s problems but someone who is human. It’s ok to be human. It’s ok to have days you don’t feel proud or moments you wish you could forget. But it isn’t ok to bury the real you under the need to please others and become someone you aren’t because you were told, you aren’t ok the way you are. It isn’t ok to measure your worth on what you could or could not accomplish. This is your one beautiful life and if you don’t see it that way then let’s see what or who is standing in your way and blocking your vantage point. I’m not saying it’s easy. The road to self-discovery is windy, long, at times bumpy, but in the straightways, so worth it! Societal perceived pressures are not making it any easier, that’s for sure. Accomplishments, wealth, beauty, success, and fame are not only all around us, but plated up and in our face on a daily….nay, hourly basis. It’s so easy not to feel like you measure up and as a result, focus on the what. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a movie star. Not an actress but a movie star. To me, this represented glamour, lights, cameras, fame. If you asked me I would say I wear a long sparkling red gown and I used to kiss my parents goodnight twisting my head back and forth, like a true Hollywood style kiss. As soon as I was able I was trying out for plays or hosting my own. Thank goodness I didn’t have youtube during my formative years. I’ve always had the gift of gab so I guess sales, was a natural step when the talent agents weren’t all fighting to sign me. I love presenting information and the art of negotiation. I’m extroverted and have been told more than once, politely persistent. I’ve been successful on my chosen career path but….that’s not WHO I am, that’s what I do. Professionally, I’m direct, aggressive, and will go to the mat defending my point of view but personally, I’m more agreeable, kind, flexible, and compassionate. I will always be outspoken but I don’t always share my feelings. Instead, I worry about how others feel and work to make sure everyone is comfortable and well-loved. Who am I? I would love to say a healthy mixture of both, at least that’s what I strive for. I would like the care and compassion to enter my professional life and assertiveness and strong voice to enter my personal life. We spend so much of our time trying to get somewhere. Get through school, get through college, get a good job, get married, get the family, get the better job, get to retirement, get out and see the world…...5, 10, 15-year plans. Now, I’m a goal setter don’t get me wrong. One of my most precious assets is my brainstorming and creativity. But I’ve learned something on this journey, too much focus on the future means you miss the present. It’s important to have something to shoot for and something to look forward to but never lose touch with where you are. There are great things happening right now, right where you are and if you only set your sights on the future, you may miss them. Just like you are outwardly growing your personal and professional life, you are internally growing yourself. Don’t lose sight of the trifecta because they all matter. CHALLENGE: Look in the mirror with a different focus. Instead of noticing all that is wrong, take a special interest in all that is right and worth exploring to deepen and strengthen who you were meant to be. WHO you are will always return the brightest reflection. I Know YOU Can Do It! We’ve all been there if we aren’t there now; that overwhelming feeling of not being as far along in life as you think you should be. The society we’re living in now isn’t helping either. With technology, we have the ability to peek in, creep, or troll anyone’s virtual life to start forming our opinion on how the other half live. It’s all perception and we are buying it, hook line, and sinker as reality. Look how successful everyone else is that must mean I’m behind. Does that give us the motivation to bring out our competitive side? For some yes but for most it just makes us feel sad and bad about ourselves. It’s demotivating because it looks like we are worlds apart and there is no way to catch up so guess what….I just won’t do anything. What if where you are is exactly where you need to be? What if self-acceptance gives you the motivation to grow? Want to dig a little deeper? Perception…..ah the double edge sword. You might say to someone who is stuck in their way of thinking, “you need a new perspective”. Many times that means, I want you to see it my way. But for so many of us, it’s true, we do need a new perspective and a new way of looking at the world, what’s around us, and ourselves. But perception can easily be skewed when we accept what we think we see as reality. I was in web-marketing for several years and I can remember sitting across from a Mom and Pop shop uttering these exact words: You may not have the money to change your facade or re-sod your lawn but you can be as big and rich as you want, on the web. It’s all perception. You drive up to a business that has holes in the parking lot, a building that needs repair, and outdated decor and what do you think? They aren’t doing very well, they must not know what they are doing. But you land on an up-to-date and slick website offering the same services and you immediately have more respect - they are successful and maybe even cutting edge. Don’t you think the same scenario can apply to personal lives portrayed on the web? Do you think the person who is obsessed with selfies is so confident with the way they look that they just had to overshare with the world? NO? Possibly they are the ones in need of validation and someone to tell them how attractive they are so they can feel something, overcome something or just be able to look in the mirror. I say perception is surface level. It’s only one layer of the story. But instead of challenging and digging deeper to understand and form our opinions, we are limiting our senses to only our sight. What we see becomes our reality. I saw it so it has to be true. Communication is 55% body language and 38% tone of voice. Are we saying that no longer matters? Someone posts a picture in full glam, standing next to a sportscar and behind an obscene amount of filters and they are successful and rich. No questions. They are doing well for themselves. Just as you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t accept reality in a photograph, nay social media pic. I love technology and I hope my constant reminders are not painting the wrong picture here. We need a healthy balance in all that we do. I’m just shining a light on how easily things can get off-kilter and what can happen as a result. Being aware is the first step. Sometimes we just feel bad and we let it go at that. We never dig deeper and peel back the layers to see why. Could it be what we are consuming and the rate in which we are consuming it? When you feel overwhelmed or behind, have you asked yourself why? In a cause and effect trial, should you remove causes to judge the effect? Or do you just throw up your hands and blame this mean old world and the hand you’ve been dealt? You have the power to take control of your reaction to any action. I read a book with the most profound advice; The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I often quote each of the agreements separately when they apply...and they do, often! The fourth agreement is to always give your best. Now that sounds simple but it’s much more complex the deeper you dig. You see, today you may have it all to give but tomorrow you may not. So if you always give your best then you are giving what you have on that given day and nothing more. We see giving 100% as all. Imagine a full glass up to the brim. That’s all that glass can hold so it’s 100%. But what if that the glass was only half full? How could you give your best or 100%? Well if you give the whole half then you are giving all you have to give at that moment and that is your best. It’s hard to conceptualize because we have bought into this idea of 100% as everything to the fullest. If you don’t have a full glass then you don’t have enough. How often do you have a full glass? What happens on the other days? You feel bad and less than perfect, behind, losing. But what if you gave YOUR all….not it all but YOUR all every time? Wouldn’t you feel great knowing that you gave it your all? Would that change your outlook before the day even started? Today, I’m going to give it my all! No matter what happens, I’m giving it my all and that’s enough! CHALLENGE: Look within first. Before you compare your life and list of accomplishments with what you see, find out who you are and what is most important to you. Today give your best, whatever that may be. I Know You Can Do It! This week, Jim thought it was a good challenge to put bodycams on theme parks guests. Was he correct? Scottye is ready player one to put the internet in charge of your basic motor functions while Jim turns Universal's Halloween Horror Nights into a democratic election (with cheap 3D tricks, wakka wakka!) But before all that, Scottye googles for the worst theme parks ever and is absolutely not disappointed both in the lack of quality and the abundance of dicks. It's like the internet knows him.

Carbohydrates get a bad wrap. However, there's the special carbohydrate all of us should have within our nutritional diet. The special carbohydrate is FIBER! Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact Fiber is different from simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are broken down and digested rapidly. They contain refined sugars and very few essential vitamins and minerals (i.e., table sugar, fruit juice, brown sugar, soft drinks, corn syrup, etc.). Fiber plays an important role in optimizing your health The average American consumes less than 15 grams of fiber per day. Women need 25-30 grams Men need 30-38 grams How does dietary fiber support you? Helps improve bowel function Reduces the risk of colon cancer Helps stabilize blood sugar Reduces high blood pressure Reduces LDL cholesterol Keeps your digestive track moving The impact fiber has on digestion is great. High fiber foods take longer to chew giving time for your body to communicate with your brain...I'm full! In the stomach, fiber absorbs the water and creates bulk. And it aides in satiation. In the small intestines through the colon, fiber continues moving things along. It's also where the fermentation process begins which is vital to gut health. Keep in mind, you need soluble and insoluble fiber. Both have benefits. Soluble Fiber (apples, berries, flaxseeds) provides food to the "good army of bacteria" in your gut which helps to make vitamins. Insoluble Fiber is a great maid for cleaning the gut. When the intestines are clean, it's easier for your gut to absorb the fermented products from the soluble fiber. Not getting enough fiber? The Mayo Clinic recommends adding some of the following in your daily consumption: Whole grains Fruits Vegetables Bean, peas, and other legumes Nuts and seeds The K.I.S.S. ~ God made it, You can eat it! Stay clear of refined or processed foods like canned fruit, canned vegetables, fruit juices, white breads and pastas, and non-whole grain cereals. All of these are low in fiber. Please remember how the grain-refining process works by removing the outer coat (the bran) of the grain which lowers the fiber content. ENRICHED foods had added vitamins and iron, but not the fiber.
