It's a big day for BEHIND THE LENS as we're kicking off Year 11 of BTL Radio Show AND my 43rd year as a film critic! And what better way for "moviesharkd" to start a new year and new decade than with a shark movie. And what a shark movie I have for you today – INTO THE DEEP! Directed by CHRISTIAN SESMA and written by Chad Law and Josh Ridgway, INTO THE DEEP stars Scout Taylor Compton, Callum McGowan, Stuart Townsend, Jon Seda and Richard Dreyfuss. An action-packed thriller where pirates on the hunt for sunken drugs kidnap a boat of tourists, including husband and wife Cassidy and Gregg, and force them to dive into shark-infested waters to retrieve the drugs (and anything else they might find of value). Listen as Christian and I discuss the making of INTO THE DEEP and the challenges it presented to him. Well accomplished with action films on land, diving into a movie that is 90%, if not more, both underwater and on the water proved to be a steep learning curve for Christian, but one that he and his team successfully mounted to deliver this taut nail-biter. It's an interesting interview discussing not only the making of the film and shooting in Thailand but having Richard Dreyfuss involved in the film and notably with a compelling call to action for sharks during the end credits. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

MCALLEN, Texas - As the sun rose over McAllen on a milestone day, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. FIRST in Texas, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering STEM education, marked its 10th anniversary in serving the Rio Grande Valley by revealing the latest season challenge for the FIRST® Tech Challenge program. In a region that has long needed more educational programs like FIRST®, this celebration wasn't just about a game—it was about a decade of transformation in the Rio Grande Valley, a community that has embraced the power of robotics to inspire and uplift its youth. At the McAllen kickoff event, hosted at McAllen Memorial High School, students, educators, and community leaders gathered to witness the unveiling of INTO THE DEEP, a new challenge that will take students beneath the surface of the oceans to innovate solutions for a better future. Across Texas, similar kickoff events were held in eight different areas, each one brimming with teams representing a diversity of backgrounds and experiences. These University Interscholastic League (UIL) approved competitions will culminate in the 2025 State Championship in Belton, Texas, where the best of the best will showcase their ingenuity and teamwork. For Jason Arms, one of the founders of FIRST RGV and now CEO of FIRST in Texas, the day was especially meaningful. Reflecting on his journey in supporting teams since 2014, Arms shared his deep pride in the growth and impact of FIRST® programs in the Valley. "In 2014, a few of us STEM enthusiasts came together to support the 40 or so robotics teams that existed in the Rio Grande Valley at the time," Arms recalled. "Within just a few years, that number grew to more than 300 teams across all three programs, and we achieved parity with other regions in Texas in terms of representation and grant funding." Arms' vision and dedication have been instrumental in bringing STEM opportunities to a region that previously lacked the resources to fully participate in such programs.McAllen teacher and robotics competition referee David Ruiz has been with FIRST in the Valley from the beginning. Here is an interview he gave the Rio Grande Guardian. Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Christianity's Surprising Resurgence - An Ivan Illich Perspective | Dougald Hine

Author, activist and educator, Dougald Hine returns to the show this week for a discussion that is simultaneously timely and timeless. If you've been following along on the blog, you'll know that I have been wrestling with how to say things, with whom and to what end, given how the world is going. One of the topics I had been meaning to record on for months now was the resurgence of Christianity: whether it is surprising or not, whether it is automatically reactionary, whether it is a sign of things improving or devolving. And I tried coming at that from several angles -including recording a whole solo show before leaving Paraguay on the topic that I didn't release- but found none of them were satisfactory. Then I messaged Dougald about it, and it turns out it's an area he is also exploring, both personally and 'culturally' (whatever that means) right now. Plus, he's something of an aficionado of the works of Ivan Illich -whose insight is especially useful in these times. So he graciously agreed to come back on the show to prove that two heads are definitely better than one. We explore the possible why of Christianity's resurgence, who 'owns' it and what happens if we don't engage, plus its different forms and mutations. Then we turn to Ivan Illich himself, beginning with a biography and an overview of his thought, before finishing with what he might have to say about these very strange times we are living through. (And depending on when you catch this episode, there is still time to get in on some Illich discussions with Dougald. Details in the show notes. An excellent discussion. Enjoy!         Show Notes Dougald's Substack. Subscribe for access details for the Illich discussions. Here's a series from Dougald's substack called Into The Deep exploring Christianity's return: The Ruined Church. Stranger Friends. What Happened in the Cathedral. Regrowing A Living Culture: A School Called Home. Dougald's first appearance on the show, discussing At Work In The Ruins.

In this interview, we talk about Dani's decision to go from primary school teacher to musician and how that change has gone. Dani shares the doubts she experienced as well as how the experience has changed her.   Along with the EP, Dani has a music video out for “Double Shot,” a song centered on a person who's hurt so badly that they wind up hurting others. The video is filmed in a school setting with a group of children, an unexpected frame for the story and Dani shares what led her to go in this direction.   And this conversation wouldn't be complete without us talking about the cover art, done by Tamara Armstrong. It's simply amazing and we go into how the two met and worked together.   Following the interview, enjoy two songs from the EP, “Double Shot,” followed by “Sweet Summer Nights.”

New York-based sound healing artist Lisa Marie Darling crafts meditational soundscapes to foster emotional and energetic reconnection. Through a cappella vocalization and experimental, looped melody formation, Lisa creates otherworldly compositions to aid in identifying and unlocking fossilized trauma and grief. To date, she has released three albums—Darling Lullabies (2014), Canciones De Cuna (2017), and Into The Deep (2022). Her latest album presents a guided journey through inner emotional landscapes, integrating the vital healing energies of the celestial bodies of Earth, Sedna, Venus, Saturn, Mercury, and the moons of Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune. Listeners will be led into a calming space where surrender, meditation, reflection, and contemplation feel safe, possible, and sacred.Today, Lisa shares her background and why she began doing the sound work including the four major life events that led her to the work including her mystical experiences and her life's challenges. We begin talking about lullabies and their potent ability to heal and reduce pain and suffering not only babies, but also during palliative care. We then get to listen to some of the soundscapes, and she talks about how they came to be through her connection to astrology and planetary energies. We end our conversation talking about Lisa's advocacy work to reduce sound pollution that was infiltrating her living space. To experience the magic firsthand, you can join one of Lisa's livestream Soundscape Journey events via the free Insight Timer meditation app. You can also find her music on Spotify, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and YouTube or follow Darling on Instagram and TikTok. If you are interested in hosting a live Soundscape Journey event in the Hudson Valley area, you can contact Lisa directly and you can learn more about her work and all of her online and in-person offerings via www.lisamariedarling.com.Finally, you can learn more about the Headstone Gallery event in which Lisa's Soundscapes will be a part of coming opening June 4th over here. And here's your Forever Conscious Moon report for the upcoming New Moon!Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. Our show music is from Shana Falana !!! My Goals for Joy to the Soul

Hello my friends, and welcome back to The Conscious Cafe! Today on the show, I'm sharing with you my goals for this 30 day experience, before the journey officially starts tomorrow.I am hoping for journey to bring me more clarity, peace, and stability. My life is currently changing my the second, and the fast pace of my every day has left my mind spinning. So my goals for this challenge, which I will share more about in Day One's podcast, are to find a sense of peace and grounded-ness that stays with me in every moment. A morning routine. Every morning I will start the day with a glass of lemon water, 5 minutes of breathwork, 10 things I'm grateful for, and 15 minutes of talking to my Inner Voice/channeling.Mindful Media. I have noticed the negative toll social media takes on me, so for the next 30 days, I will only open social media (IG and FB), twice per day: Once to post, and once to spend 15-30 minutes intentionally scrolling through my feed to find at least five posts that deeply resonate with me to like and comment on. Scrolling with a purpose (to build community and share support), instead of scrolling mindlessly.Meditative Movement. Each day, I want to move my body with presence. Whether that is a walk in the woods while I take pictures, a full yoga routine, or just dancing to my favorite song for a few moments, I want to take at least 5 minutes each day to be fully present in my body.Deep Breathing.  Every time I catch it going off the rails, I am going to take three deep breaths, and state out loud to myself the exact facts of my current situation, no emotion or judgement attached. Kindness. Every day, I will do one random act of kindness for someone else.Nightly Reflection. I am also committing to recording a short podcast episode each night of this journey. Thanks for listening!Want to join me on the journey? Hello, my friends and welcome back to The Conscious Cafe! I am SO excited for this week's episode. First, I share my own experiences recently with shifting and transmuting energy, specifically fear, and the freedom I am finding from releasing control. This transition has largely been facilitated by my own Inner Being, or Soul, a process I share about deeply in today's show. Then, in the second half of the show, I introduce you to The Council and friends. That's right, some new non-physicals have joined the team! As I've been going more deeply inward and 'channeling myself', some new friends have popped in to my awareness. I am just starting to be able to differentiate between their energies, words, and voices, so this week I am sharing a taste of these new energies in a special audio clip. This clip was taken from a recording I did for a friend, who asked about whether she should stay or leave her job. I asked if I could practice on her, and here we are! The second half of the show is dedicated to this audio clip. In it, I let each new entity take turns answering the question, so you can really hear and feel the differences in each!Below, I've included a quick summary of each entity, and how I perceive them so far. Clarion- I feel her deep in my belly, below my ribs, and feel a sensation of fullness when the answer comes up. Pink. Soft, gentle, quiet, peaceful, deep.Raljnar- Feel like the energy comes back and over my head. Pale greeny-blue. Cheerful, chimey energy, love to rhyme. The Migration-  Wider band of energy behind my head. Luminescent white color. They are quick and sharp, and love the word 'creation'.And finally, The Council. I feel them like a warmth that fills my head. Blue. Peace, earnest, searching/inviting, powerful.I hope you enjoy this week's episode! The Council is a collection of nonphysical energies, channeled through my five senses to transmit their messages of love and wisdom to the Earth. They are dedicated to showing each being that True Love resides within, guiding you on each moment of your journey. Their peaceful and compassionate energy allows for deep internal transformation as their energy retunes our own energies back into harmony with The Truth of Who We Are.You can listen to the episode on connecting with your Inner Being here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1519978/8198818To connect more with The Council, subscribe to their weekly newsletter!
