Crit Thomas, global market strategist at Touchstone Investments, says the stock market's strong run makes investors feel good, but it has gotten to a point where the market is expecting more that a slowing economy that is dealing with inflation can deliver. Thomas says the current earnings recession is problematic -- regardless of whether the broad economy enters a recession -- because it shows that micro issues and what is happening at the company level will be more important than the macro, big-picture issues moving into 2024. In the ETF of the Week, Tom Lydon of VettaFi looks at a new fund that puts a different twist -- driven by artificial intelligence -- on 'Buy on the dips.' Ted Rossman of Bankrate.com looks at how inflation and rate changes are impacting credit-card users, and what it all says for the big picture at a time when credit-card debt nationally now exceeds $1 trillion. In the Market Call, Dorrit Lowsen, president of Change Finance, talks stocks through the lens of her firm's unique take on ESG investing.

Hello Everyone and welcome to another great episode of the JOY of Financial Planning podcast. The topics of this podcast are a compliment to the book JOY of Financial Planning, available at Amazon.com JOY of Financial Planning is about the belief that we can overcome the unique economic, and life challenges we face as a generation. We believe we can do this by first getting our economic house in order. In fact, we have, no other choice. We must grow our wealth, follow our passions, and live with compassion to find creative ways to achieve our own version of the American Dream. This episode and others in this series, is a transcription of this month's Letter to Stakeholders I write for the wealth management clients of Jason Howell Company and our broader community network. I feel compelled to post one last extract from the very end of my conversation with the legendary Hunter Lovins - for those who might prefer to listen in ‘chapters', for those who might not have made it all the way through on first listening, and for those who might be particularly interested in the themes covered here. And because I'm still deeply moved by how our conversation culminated. This extract segues directly from extract 2, where Hunter left off talking about trying to figure out how the rest of the world recovers from COVID-19. We explore her brilliant stories and current views of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, Wellbeing Governments Coalition, Regenerative Communities Network, the Club of Rome, Doughnut Economics Action Lab, and how Dana Meadows' famous piece ‘Places to Intervene in a System' was born. Hunter Lovins is a best-selling author, including of the seminal Natural Capitalism, with Paul Hawken and Amory Lovins. She's also founder and President of Natural Capitalism Solutions, founding Professor of Sustainable Management at the Bard MBA, a pioneering rancher, and Chief of Impact at Change Finance. Hunter consults for companies and countries around the world, has been named Millennium TIME Magazine Hero of the Planet, and was awarded the 2008 Sustainability Pioneer Prize by the European financial community for her decades of pioneering work. This is a second brief extract from towards the end of my conversation with the legendary Hunter Lovins. It opens by looking at the tectonic shift that is apparently underway in the capital flows that will back in regenerative economies. Where banks are already looking at the stranded fossil fuel assets they're reclaiming and wondering what to do with them. And where the opportunities on the other side of the ledger grow. I heard Hunter say not long ago that the regenerative economy was already bigger than the extractive one in her home state of Colorado. But that nobody knows. So we talk about how they found out, how they engaged with 90% of the economy on it, and where else this might be true. Along with what to look out for. So much has changed in just the last couple of months, in the world at large and in Hunter's thinking. “Things are shifting,” she says. And “you can see the shape of the future.” Hunter is a best-selling author, including of the seminal Natural Capitalism, with Paul Hawken and Amory Lovins. She's also founder and President of Natural Capitalism Solutions, founding Professor of Sustainable Management at the Bard MBA, a pioneering rancher, and Chief of Impact at Change Finance. Hunter Lovins has been a highly influential figure for many decades in the regenerative economies movement. She is another guest that I struggle to describe in a brief intro. To give you a little idea, she's a best-selling author, including of the seminal Natural Capitalism, with Paul Hawken and Amory Lovins. I could go on. Oh, she also recently took out the Humungous Fungus Award – and we will talk about that! I heard Hunter say not long ago, before the pandemic, that her research suggests the regenerative economy is already bigger than the extractive one in her home state of Colorado. But that nobody knows! So I asked Hunter if she'd join me to talk about it, along with how things are changing right now, and of course some of her brilliant life story. Like my other extensive conversations with legendary figures in this space, like Hazel Henderson and Paul Hawken, this one drifted into ever more meaningful and heart felt exchanges as we went. I hope you enjoy this journey through Hunter's life, these transforming times, and where we can go from here. Our conversation includes why she ditched being a lawyer and accidentally became a regenerative rancher, her retrospective view on change and approaches to it over the decades (spoiler alert – where were the stories?), and the growing number of calls she's receiving asking how to build a regenerative economy out of the COVID collapse. So much of her thinking, she says, has changed in just the last couple of months - from what's needed to transition towards renewable energy, regenerative agriculture, and the finance to back it in, to how she goes about her own life and work. Hunter's is a trans-partisan vision where we're all in for societies that are better for people and planet – genuine prosperity. She's helped set up so much of the world's work to this end – including more recently the Wellbeing Economy Alliance and the Regenerative Communities Network. Dana Meadows' famous leverage points piece – Places to Intervene in a System – was seeded on Hunter's whiteboard. This prompts a moving conclusion to our conversation reflecting on some of Dana's profound insight. We're up against it, but we can still make something good of this situation, Hunter believes. Tectonic shifts are upon us. So where and how do we go from here? This episode was recorded online on 7 May 2020. This episode is a graduate-level course on tracking renewable energy from generation to the end user, and the complexities of how policies, processes and markets all interact. My guest is Ben Gerber, the Executive Director of M-RETS, the Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System based in Minneapolis. And this episode is a first for this podcast as I invite a guest co-host to join me—Tanuj Deora, Vice President of Market Development at Simple Energy. Tanuj is well known in clean energy circles – among his many previous roles he’s served as the Director of the Colorado Energy Office and more recently as EVP at SEPA, the Smart Electric Power Alliance, a role in which he’s been a guest on this podcast before. Ben, Tanuj and I start our conversation with the basics – what is MRETS and what does it do, and how do Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs, work? We look at how the REC market landscape has been changing for both buyers and sellers, and we get into the debate that’s been happening within the REC community about the value of RECs and if they’ve outlived their usefulness. Tanuj and Ben square off about questions of additionality and look at the extent to which REC policies provide a necessary market incentive to build new renewable generation or whether they can serve as a disincentive in some scenarios. From there we look at the applicability of tracking systems to other sectors such as energy efficiency and energy storage. Then we look more broadly at the implications of RECs for decarbonization, and specifically at how advances in the technology and different market and policy approaches can support meaningful climate action. And we close our conversation with a look at renewable natural gas. We recorded this episode in back in February when Ben was in DC to speak at NARUC’s annual Winter Policy Conference. Though the conversation is a couple months old now, it has aged well aside from Tanuj’s gloating about the Patriots winning the Super Bowl. This is a special episode of More Power to You, in which I bring you an episode of Offshore Wind Insider, a podcast I launched a few months ago for the Business Network for Offshore Wind, which in full disclosure is a client of mine. My guest is Liz Burdock, President and CEO of the Network. Our conversation covers both strengths and challenges facing the US offshore wind industry today. We begin by looking at where the market stands today in terms of its potential capacity, current state commitments and the project development pipeline. We discuss recent lease activity, the entry of major international companies into the US market, what that says about investor confidence and what it may mean for the industry’s growth. We obviously talk about the IPF, the Network’s International Partnering Forum which is just a few weeks away in New York, as well as other activities the Network has planned later this year. Liz shares how the industry’s rapid growth also poses significant supply chain challenges, and she wraps up by looking West and discussing the possibilities for offshore wind in the Pacific. At least I thought she was wrapping up, but then she turns the tables on me and starts asking me questions. So, I share some of what I’ve seen and learned as someone who’s still relatively new to the industry. From a vantage point of 40 years experience helping create the field of sustainability, Hunter Lovins is in an excellent position to explain where sustainability is today–and to highlight the latest thinking that will drive regenerative practices, the next wave beyond sustainability. Hunter is the President of Natural Capitalism Solutions, an entrepreneurial NGO that helps companies, communities and countries implement more regenerative practices profitably. Hunter is on the steering committee of Leading for Well-Being, an international team charged by the King of Bhutan to reinvent the global economy. A Professor of Sustainable Business at Bard MBA in New York, she is also one of the entrepreneurs creating Change Finance, an advisory moving money from harm to healing.  In this podcast, Hunter gives her vision for a sustainable future, building on A Finer Future, a forthcoming book she is co-writing for the Club of Rome, on whose Executive Committee she serves. Hunter talks about the power of resource efficiency, renewable energy, and the potential for tax shifting. She describes the potential for positive change with cutting-edge ideas like Biomimicry and Regenerative Capitalism. This is a resolutely positive vision of change and building a better world, inspired by Buckmister Fuller, Dana Meadows and many others. But it is only possible if we take action today.
