In this episode of Making Good Book Club, Charelle and I chat about Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman. Spoiler alert: it's not your typical productivity book. Instead of a list of time-saving hacks, Burkeman offers a radical reframe on how we think about time, productivity, and our short human lifespan (about 4,000 weeks on average). We discuss key takeaways, like why you'll never clear your to-do list, the importance of embracing imperfection, and how hobbies (just for fun!) can transform your life. Though this book wasn't exactly what we expected, Charelle and I had so much fun picking it apart and finding applications for small business owners, including ourselves! Slow Productivity is all about challenging the hustle culture mindset and redefining what it means to be productive. While the book offers an intriguing framework, it's really not a “how-to” guide—it's more about understanding the history and philosophy of productivity, and then finding ways to apply those principles in your own life.We discuss Newport's core principles, such as focusing on fewer tasks, working at a natural pace, and obsessing over quality. The conversation also explores issues like "pseudo productivity"—working for the sake of visibility rather than meaningful outcomes—and how to navigate the slow productivity movement as a business owner. It's Q4 of 2024, and we're in the golden quarter!
This was not a book Charelle and I were planning on covering for the podcast, and I think we both kind of surprised ourselves by choosing it. But after last month's read of Daring Greatly by Brene Brown, which while fantastic was definitely not strictly a business book, we wanted to try swinging in the opposite way for this month's read. And you know what? While we definitely both had some reservations and don't agree with 100% everything in the book, I think we were both pleasantly surprised! The subtitle of $100M Offers, is: How To Make Offers So Good People Feel Stupid Saying No, both encapsulates why this book was so far from our minds as an option for this podcast, and why we were interested in giving it a try. Obviously, Charelle and I are not interested in tactics that make anyone feel stupid. BUT we were also interested in what the author, Alex Hormozi, had to say about creating an offer and setting prices, something we haven't really covered yet on the podcast. Outwardly, Alex Hormozi might appear to you, as he does to me, as typical bro marketer. A strong proponent of hustle at all costs. I disagree with some of what he teaches, but Charelle and I wanted to challenge ourselves. Turned out, this was the perfect book to do it with. We learned a BIG lesson from this read, or at least I did, about taking what serves you without tossing out the baby with the bath water, what a terrible expression. But you get what I mean. I genuinely feel like I learned a lot from this book, and Charelle and I were able to pull out some really useful takeaways.MAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:https://makinggoodpodcast.com/259CONNECT WITH ME ON INSTAGRAM:https://instagram.com/laurentildenGET 100 MARKETING PROMPTS (free!):https://makinggoodpodcast.com/100prompts

This book was an absolute joy to read. As always, Charelle and I resonated with different parts and pieces, and maybe more so than past books the sections we pulled out clearly illustrated the ways our brains work so differently, which is always fun to see. I have been following the author, Elise Blaha Cripe, for a long time, and when she came out with her book I immediately jumped on getting a copy. I really admire Elise for her creativity and dedication to making space for joy, whether it's a craft project or a baking experiment or a business venture. She's currently on a break from social media, but you can still find plenty of inspiration by scrolling her Instagram page, @elisejoy. Big Dreams Daily Joys is an intuitive, approachable and honestly visually fun book for anyone who could use some fresh ideas for making progress, setting goals, and making time for the things that matter most. There were so many jewels in this book we couldn't cover them all, So if you enjoy this discussion and you learn something, you will definitely want to pick up a copy for yourself. The subtitle of this book I think perfectly explains what the book is all about: Making and marketing work that lasts”. There are the one-hit-wonders of the world. And then there are the books, art, music, and businesses that stand the test of time. How do the so-called perennial seller keep reaching people and earning money decades or even centuries later? That's what this book is all about. Creating something that really matters to people and will live on.I actually hadn't heard of this book until it was recommended to us recently, and I'm so glad we gave it a read. As always, Charelle and I picked up on different parts of the book, but over all we both took a lot away from it. I would say this book is most geared toward creatives who are passionate about what they do and really want to build something that lasts, vs. folks who are mainly looking to support a certain lifestyle with their business. No matter where you stand, there is so much food for thought in this episode, and I'm really excited for you to give it a listen. To be honest, I avoided reading this book for quite a while. This is just my opinion, but the title is boring and misleading, and the cover art is pretty bad. I know, “Don't judge a book by its cover” and all that, but it's actually really bad in my opinion. What finally got me to cave was multiple guests on this podcast kept recommending it to me, people I really respect and enjoy talking to. So Charelle and I decided to crack it open! Now, while I don't agree with everything in E-Myth, it turned out there were more valuable takeaways than I think either Charelle or I were expecting, which was such a lovely surprise. As per usual, Charelle and I flagged at different sections and had some really different takeaways. Right off the bat, I just need to tell you that this book is a must-read. It is so beautifully written, and there is so much wisdom to gain. Charelle and I have already begun experimenting with implementing a few of the ideas that Tricia Hersey shares, including unlearning popular messaging around productivity, hustling, and the role of rest. This is not a business or self-help book. It is a personal and social history intertwined with a healthy critique of white supremacy and capitalism and the way it influences how we work and the way we value ourselves and our time. Tricia writes from her experience as a black woman and descendant of enslaved people. There was so much in this book that just made me pause and re-read and underline and reflect.Mindset is certainly a big topic that I tackle fairly often, both on this podcast and in my membership, and Rest is Resistance has given me so much food for thought about how I approach mental health and well-being in my work. I loved talking with Charelle about this book, and as always, seeing what different pieces of wisdom we each picked up on. This was a truly great conversation, and I cannot wait for you to hear it. So, I have been very excited to share this book with you all and Charelle for a long time because I have been following Ali and his YouTube journey for quite a bit. Ali Abdaal is an ex-doctor turned productivity wizard and highly followed person on YouTube. He shares a lot of videos about productivity, time management, evidence-based strategies, and tools to help us be more productive. He has been publishing amazing content on YouTube for the past 7 years. I am a big fan and I cannot tell you how much I have learned from his channel. When I heard Ali had a book coming out I was immediately sold. I purchased a book, got on the waitlist, and, (with Charelle's agreement of course), we decided to cover his book on the podcast. So this is that episode! We finally got our hands and eyeballs on our copies of Feel Good Productivity, and I had so much fun dissecting this book with Charelle. As Cherelle would say, Feel Good Productivity is very “bitty.” In other words, it is jam-packed with lots of bits of extremely valuable info, way more than we could ever cover in one episode. His recommendations, ideas, and experiments you can try are evidence-based and science-backed, which I very much appreciate. Ali also asks a lot of valuable questions in the book, which are themselves very worth keeping in your back pocket. I think this book is well worth a read, but here we're going to talk about some of our key takeaways. I think Charelle and I did a good job of pulling out highlights that will hopefully inspire you in your day-to-day, but again I would absolutely recommend giving the whole book a read, it is fantastic.MAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:https://makinggoodpodcast.com/221CONNECT WITH ME ON INSTAGRAM:https://instagram.com/laurentildenGET 100 MARKETING PROMPTS (free!):https://makinggoodpodcast.com/100prompts
I had heard amazing things about this book and was so so excited to cover it in this months Book Club. The more I read, however, the more I realized that Hooked is really geared toward tech companies, tech products, things like apps and games, and not physical products or services like the ones most of us have as our businesses. That's not to say this wasn't a great book! Charelle and I were able to pull out so many lessons and ideas from each section, and throughout our conversation, apply them to business models you might have as a listener of this podcast. It was a fun exercise in finding the generalities in each marketing method, and thinking about how they can be used across industries. Plus, I got to ask my favorite question: What can we learn from this? Another aspect of this book that I really liked was the way the author, Nir Eyal, took the time to consider the ethics of the Hook Theory, the marketing strategy he outlines in the book. I have talked before on this podcast about how I dislike using the language of hunting or fishing when it comes to how we market, (people are not fish!), so I did pause at “Hook…” But Eyal takes a lot of care in considering the ethics of his theory, which I really appreciated, and think we all need to think about more as marketers. So, an unconventional episode, but one really worth giving a listen because there is so much to get out of it!Connect with us on Instagram:Charelle - @charellegriffithLauren - @laurentildenMAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:https://makinggoodpodcast.com/215CONNECT WITH ME ON INSTAGRAM:https://instagram.com/laurentildenGET 100 MARKETING PROMPTS (free!):https://makinggoodpodcast.com/100prompts
Seth Godin is a thinker in the marketing space that I have admired for a very long time, and I am so excited to share some of his work with you all. While he may not use the words “ethical marketer” specifically to describe his work, Godin is definitely a non-bro marketer. He was one of the first to popularize the idea of “permission marketing,” not pushing a product or idea onto anyone, but selling to your ideal customer by adding value and being invited in by our customers. Now, as modern and innovative as Seth Godin is, this is also a very substantive marketing book. Charelle described it as a “thinking marketing book.” It's not written like a straightforward how-to, and it requires active engagement from the reader to parse all the incredible lessons jam-packed on every page. But that's why Charelle and I are here! To help pull out some of the headlines we think you shouldn't miss, though there is too much goodness in this book to fit every valuable thing into one episode.Regardless of where you're at in your marketing journey, I definitely recommend giving this one a read. This book was a true goldmine. It is packed full of information and examples, way, way too many for us to deep dive into all of it. It's worth it to pick up a copy of most of the books we discuss in Book Club, but Fascinate in particular is so dense with info, (in a fun way!), that we couldn't possibly cover it all in an hour-long conversation. I love this book because of the permission it gives to explore and figure out your unique approach marketing, rather than pigeonholing yourself into pre-existing models. At the same time it offers an absolute bounty of guide rails and suggestions for a plethora of brand personalities. Fascinate does an amazing job of helping you figure out first and foremost what makes your brand stand out, then apply some of Hogshead's suggested pillars or strategies to your marketing. Special thanks to Charelle for recommending this one. She's actually using some of the tactics from Fascinate in her 2024 planning! Look out world! I've got to say, Charelle and I really enjoyed chatting about this one.As a book about storytelling, it should come as no surprise that in addition to laying out really helpful ideas and frameworks, Stories That Stick was super well-written and fun to read. This book is chock full of examples, questions, and prompts to get your wheels spinning. If you are someone who feels you don't have anything to say, or that your story isn't worth telling, by the time you finish Stories That Stick you will have stories in spades. Even though I'm someone who has always been interested in narrative and has found a lot of success in sharing stories with my audience, reading these prompts sent little sparks of inspiration shooting through my mind. Luckily, author Kindra Hall walks you through how to sift through your newfound pile of stories and choose which to tell and how. It seems like I've been saying this a lot lately, but this is truly the most Charelle of books. So much so that the whole second half of our conversation was essentially a clinic on how to incorporate the methods laid out in The 12 Week Year into your own life and business. One of the reasons I was excited to dig into this book with Charelle is because since she read it many years ago, she has baked it's methods into so many aspects of her own life and business. She also uses it in her work with her clients, supporting their goals and growth using The 12 Week Year as a general framework. Needless to say, I had a blast picking Charelle's brain. The 12 Week year is all about planning, taking action, and ultimately getting more out of our time, and I mean, who can argue with that?Connect with us on InstagramCharelle - @charellegriffithLauren - @laurentildenMAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:https://makinggoodpodcast.com/196CONNECT WITH ME ON INSTAGRAM:https://instagram.com/laurentildenGET 100 MARKETING PROMPTS (free!):https://makinggoodpodcast.com/100promptsStuck on what to say in our marketing? If you're someone who is considering the future of your small business, this book is worth a read. In it, author Paul Jarvis makes the, (I would say very strong), case for why keeping your business small is the best plan, rather than aiming for growth just for growth's sake. It should come as no surprise that Charelle and I are very on board with this perspective. There was a lot of head-nodding as we read through Company of One. In addition to outlining the reasons for keeping a business small, Paul Jarvis offers some excellent advice about keeping your small business chugging even with a tiny (or non-existent) team, and without burning out.I really loved digesting some of the ideas in this book with Charelle. With the immense number of businesses out there and the sheer amount of products available the world over, you'd be forgiven for thinking that everything and everyone is catered for, but you need only go as far as your local supermarket to discover that from fashion to tech, cosmetics to stationery and everything in between, that there are plenty of instances of design biases and blindspots when it comes to diversity and inclusion. In episode 104 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan, I speak to Cherelle Brown of Kitsch Noir. When she was made redundant 5 years ago, Cherelle hit the ground running, challenged the predominantly white landscape of the stationery world, and made a huge impact in her community by creating her award-winning, family-friendly, black greeting cards and stationery brand. In this episode, we discuss Cherelle's journey from the pages of Etsy to the shelves of some of the biggest retailers around, as well as diving into the creative process behind her range of greeting cards and stationery. We also discuss the deep meaningfulness of representation to Charelle, her customers and her community and how regardless of how busy and intense things get, that you still need to ensure yourself a good quality of life. Laura Charelle LOVES her dark chocolate. Not the 65% dark chocolate on strawberries at Valentine's Day...the dark chocolate (or as I call it: black chocolate because it's damn near solid black) that has 85% cacao or higher. One step away from bakers chocolate. Why? Because according to this healthy hottie, it contains TONS of magnesium which is basically the main nutrient your body needs during your period. But even better than that, Laura has hacked her hormone system to a level we dream of. She knows exactly when to schedule meetings, and when to schedule naps. (Read that again!!) She's figured out how to HEALTHILY lose weight (put the shake down!) What kind of exercise you SHOULD be doing each week (not you, P90X...) How to be more efficient in work and your day to day And even has some brilliant thoughts on why women shouldn't apologize at work... Bonus? She can teach you all the things.
