This is a throwback to episode 29 with Jason Feifer. One of my favorite parts of today's world is how easily accessible successful people are.  They're on social media, writing long-form posts and joining podcasts now more than ever. Though it's cool to see The Rock working out or Gary V giving a keynote anytime I want, I crave the principles that led to this success.  The “behind the scenes” cut 10 years before they became an “overnight success”. I was fortunate enough to get the scoop from Jason Feifer in a recent interview.  Jason is the Editor-In-Chief of Entrepreneur Magazine and hosts two podcasts: Pessimists Archive and Problem Solvers. That's nice, but I want to know more.  Where was he 20 years ago and how did he land in this spot? Jason told a great story. About 20 years ago, Jason was working for a local newspaper in Western Massachusetts and had his heart set out to work for Boston Magazine.  He quit his job, moved to Boston and asked for the job. He didn't get it immediately but finally landed a gig there. Once he got his shot, he created a mantra for himself: “I'm not fucking around.” “I just needed something to keep me focused. I needed something to tell myself that there's a reason I'm doing this.  There's a reason I'm taking risks. There's a reason that I'm pushing myself. And it's because I'm not fucking around.  I'm not doing this stuff just to do it, I have a mission to create the best, most exciting career for myself and to push myself to things that I know I'm capable of doing.” This is powerful but it isn't new. I've talked about Dr. Michael Gervais' principle of having a personal philosophy under 25 words. Daymond John says you should be able to define yourself in 2-5 words. Charlie Jabaley literally created alter-egos for himself to become successful. My most recent draft of a personal philosophy: Make bold decisions. Compete with passion and enthusiasm. Love and trust your team. It's a work in progress. So, what's your mantra?  Your personal philosophy?  Your clear, concise statement on why you're doing what you're doing? Find it and use that to guide your path forward. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

In This Episode You Will Learn About: Having it all and not being happy Being successful yet feeling lost Charlie writing a contract with himself What he left behind in order to start his new life Biking across America Charlie’s love of generosity Money mindset Why Charlie values transparency Being a delusional optimist   Resources: Website: charliejabaley.com IG: @charlie Twitter: @charliejabaley Mastermind: fortheloveofmoney.com/mastermind   Show Notes   Today I’m sitting down with Charlie “The Rocket” Jabaley, and you guys, this may be one of the most inspiring episodes I have had this far. Charlie Jabaley was once a highly successful music manager for celebrity recording artists, but decided to walk away from it all when he realized it was leading to an unhealthy future. Since then, Charlie has biked across the United States, lost 130 pounds, and lives a more full and healthy life all around. We go deep into why Charlie left his business to pursuit better health, and the different ways he went about creating goals, training for an IronMan, and biking across the country. Charlie also talks about creating the vision of Charlie Rocket, how he manifests change, and why it’s so important to give back. This episode is so incredible, and serves as a great reminder that we can strive for wealth in all aspects, not just monetary.   Question Highlights: What career background did you come from before your transformation? How were you so successful in some aspects, but so lost in others? What did you have to leave behind in order to begin this new life? What sparked biking across America? What was that like? Where did this drive for generosity come from? What did money mean to you before this journey, and what does it mean to you now? What has made you choose to be so transparent?   Quotes "Boil pots of water, not lakes.” “I just want to live a great story.” “Too many people in this world are “you should” people, they get up on stages or they get on Youtube or Instagram and they say, “You should do this, you should do that,” and I never say those words, you should.” “See, money is going to magnify who we are.” “Nobody is going to believe in you until you get down the road, so you’ve gotta have this delusional optimistic mindset.”   Charlie Jabaley wasn't your typical kid from Georgia (United States). Sometimes labelled, "the chubby kid", Charlie was a dreamer. Knowing that he needed to use his imagination as a weapon to survive the playground, Charlie created his first persona, CEO Charlie. He had other ideas. Like pursuing the life of an athlete. But, that had to wait. As a young CEO millionaire of Atlanta Hip-hop management company, Street Execs, he sold millions of records, changed the trajectory of how to market to millennials, and guided the careers of influential artists like Grammy award winning 2Chainz. You don’t need anyone’s permission to follow your dreams – author unknown Welcome to the Sensory Strides podcast. Observations of the world through activity, reading, listening, and everything else. I had to rearrange my training schedule this week. I actually thought I would have to miss some workouts due to meetings which involved travel and just didn’t allow me enough time for the workouts. Thursday I knew I had an all day meeting in Milwaukee, which meant leaving the house at 5AM and not getting back until 7. Yes, I could have gotten that 48 minute bike in between 7 and 8, but I knew after all that driving and the all day meeting I would not have the energy. Wed I had a meeting in Madison after work. I did my swim workout in the morning and got in just over a mile of the 4.5 miles scheduled prior to my 7AM conference call. I was actually pleased to get that mile in since I didn’t think I would have a chance to do any of the run portion. Then, my evening meeting was canceled so I was able to do both Thursday’s bike and 3 miles of the run. For Memorial Day, a group of us went to the local lake to do an open water swim. First time swimming in a wetsuit. The swim was great and the water wasn’t all that cold. During one of my workouts this week I listed to the Fat Black Podcast and he had Charlie Jabaley on the show. What a great story, especially for a back of the packer like me. Charlie did the New Zealand Ironman in March finishing just ahead of the final cutoff. https://player.fm/series/trispecifics-the-fat-black-podcast/fb-262-charlie-jabaley With the change in the weather, I finally had to take the fleece sheets off the bed and replace them with summer sheets. I bought some sheets off Amazon and I was very nervous about it as I am very particular about my bed. When I opened the sheets I was very excited that the fitted sheet had sewn in elastic to help the sheet stay on the corners. Then, the top sheet was extra long – I was able to really tuck it in at the bottom and the top sheet still went all the way to the head of the bed. Exciting for me because I hate when the sheet pulls out and my feet are uncovered. Thanks for joining me this week. Don't forget to stop and smell the roses. Find us on social media!   Today I have Charlie Jabaley on the show. Who the hell is Charlie… Charlie is a common man that found success at a young age in the entertainment industry. But Charlie had always been the fat kid. As he got more success he got bigger, he was depressed. He was in a dark place, even when he won a Grammy, even with making a million dollars before the age of 30. He hit rock bottom. He told himself... what a person does in the dark is what he truly is. He left his successful career, his support network… to become the opposite of everything he ever was. He moved from Atlanta to California. He retired from the music industry to chase his childhood dream of becoming an athlete. Charlie’s story consists of a brain tumor, depression, binge eating, obesity, starving himself, running marathons, gaining weight, becoming vegan, gaining more weight, he felt stuck and He knew everything had to change. He took 2017 to become the exact opposite of everything he was. He completely turned his life around and now my health is in a diametrically different place. His brain tumor is shrinking. He lost 120lbs and in March he chased the cut off at Ironman New Zealand to fulfill a contract he wrote to himself. Charlie is now riding across America on his dream machine tour. He still is facing challenges but his on the right channel and changing lives along the way. As he says… His story isn’t over yet. Enjoy. One of my favorite parts of today’s world is how easily accessible successful people are.  They’re on social media, writing long-form posts and joining podcasts now more than ever. Though it’s cool to see The Rock working out or Gary V giving a keynote anytime I want, I crave the principles that led to this success. That’s nice, but I want to know more.  Where was he 20 years ago and how did he land in this spot? Jason told a great story. About 20 years ago, Jason was working for a local newspaper in Western Massachusetts and had his heart set out to work for Boston Magazine.  He quit his job, moved to Boston and asked for the job. He didn’t get it immediately but finally landed a gig there. Once he got his shot, he created a mantra for himself: “I’m not fucking around.” “I just needed something to keep me focused. I needed something to tell myself that there’s a reason I’m doing this.  There’s a reason I’m taking risks. There’s a reason that I’m pushing myself. And it’s because I’m not fucking around.  I’m not doing this stuff just to do it, I have a mission to create the best, most exciting career for myself and to push myself to things that I know I’m capable of doing.” This is powerful but it isn’t new. I’ve talked about Dr. Michael Gervais’ principle of having a personal philosophy under 25 words.   Daymond John says you should be able to define yourself in 2-5 words. Charlie Jabaley literally created alter-egos for himself to become successful. My most recent draft of a personal philosophy: Make bold decisions. Compete with passion and enthusiasm. Love and trust your team. It’s a work in progress. So, what’s your mantra?  Your personal philosophy?  Your clear, concise statement on why you’re doing what you’re doing? Find it and use that to guide your path forward.  I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Sign up for the weekly Millennial Momentum Newsletter. No BS, All hustle

Charlie Jabaley's story is one of the most inspiring stories that I've ever heard. Charlie managed the rapper 2 Chainz for 10 years, won Grammys, and had a 15 million dollar a year music business. But as his success increased, so did his weight. He found himself at 300 lbs, extremely unhealthy, depressed, and battling major food addictions. He hit rock bottom with his health and his world was flipped upside down after discovering he had a brain tumor. Charlie decided that he was going to radically change everything about his health in 2017, and that's exactly what he did. He moved across the country, from Atlanta to California, retired from his successful music career, went vegan, and became dedicated to becoming an endurance athlete. Charlie has lost 120 lbs, is now training for an Ironman in March, and his life has completely transformed.  I hope this episode inspires you as much as it has inspired me. I hope that it makes you realize how important true health is, and that it all starts with making the decision to chase the life you've always dreamed about. Excited to share our conversation! “Instead of being ashamed of doing what you do or being what you are, I ask two important questions: Why not celebrate it? Why not be proud of the fact that the body you are in can do great things?” Mirna Valerio What is a runner? How do we define an athlete? What does it truly mean to be fit and healthy?Challenging stereotypes, today's guest demands that we broaden our limited definition of these terms. She may not be fast, but she runs. In fact she runs a lot, an impressive slew of ultramarathons to her name. She's also not skinny. In fact, she's big.250 pounds big.But Mirna Valerio is without a doubt a runner. In fact, the force of nature affectionately known as The Mirnavator is one of the most inspirational athletes I have ever met — a true ambassador of sport on a mission to empower women of all shapes and sizes to proudly embrace their bodies, expand their horizons, and own their truth.Carrying herself with grace, an intelligent self-confidence and a smile so gleeful it brightens all in her path, Mirna's appeal has less to do with her ability to run long distances and everything to do with her unapologetic celebration of her personal truth.Mirna's joyful self-acceptance is both real and rare. It's both authentic and bold. It's as infectious as it is inclusive. And it's incredibly empowering to the millions of people who suffer body shame issues silently. When she’s not running, the Brooklyn native (now living in the North Georgia Mountains with her husband and teenage son) is a Spanish teacher, diversity practitioner, cross-country coach, and author of the wildly popular blog Fat Girl Running. She also writes frequently for Women's Running Magazine and recently released a remarkable memoir I thoroughly enjoyed entitled, A Beautiful Work In Progress*.She’s been profiled in the Wall Street Journal and Runner's World and on NBC Nightly News. She’s also an ambassador for a variety of brands like REI, Merrell, Skirt Sports and Swiftwick. Just this week Mirna became one of the faces of JC Penney’s newly launched Here I Am campaign.I first came across Mirna’s story by way of a mini-documentary produced by REI called The Mirnavator that went viral. Hooked, I was determined to share her powerful story with you. Mirna more than delivered.Much like past episodes with Josh LaJaunie, Adam Sud, David Clark and my most recent episode with Charlie Jabaley, this is an incredibly inspiring underdog every person story. But unlike those tales, Mirna's journey is not one marked by dramatic before and after photos. On the contrary, this is a story about body acceptance and body positivity. It's a conversation about self-empowerment and self-acceptance. It’s about tackling stereotypes, overcoming prejudice and the importance of inclusion. And it's an exchange about the need to redefine how we think about and define athleticism, the spirit of sport, and fitness in general. But more than anything, this is a conversation about owning your truth.I adore Mirna and I absolutely love this conversation. I think you will too. Please stick around to the very end for a treat. In addition to her impressive accomplishments, Mirna is also an extremely talented, Julliard-trained opera singer. I was able to convince her to take us out with her angelic, etheral voice. It's insane!Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Resigned to this fate, he abandoned his athletic dream early.Throwing himself into business instead, it wasn't long before CEO Charlie was born — an alter ego he created at age 13 that would soon become a self-fulfilling prophecy.By his mid-twenties, Charlie had overcome tremendous odds to achieve extraordinary success in the music business, collecting Grammys and counting Benjamins managing a stable of major hip-hop recording artists like 2 Chainz. The very model of the modern millennial entrepreneur, Charlie's path provided the high gloss lifestyle of his wildest imagination — a world apart from his humble beginnings. What it didn't provide? Health, happiness, or an authentic sense of wholeness. On the outside, Charlie was crushing it. On the inside, he was dying. A life-long junk food addict, he had swelled to over 300 pounds by the age of 29. But he wasn't just morbidly obese. And he wasn't just chronically depressed.Charlie Jabaley was lost. His health in rapid decline, he tried countless diets, but always gained the weight right back — plus a little extra. He tried running. He even ran three marathons. Ironically, Charlie nonetheless continued to pack the pounds on, rewarding his training sessions with shame-inducing binges. Out of control, Charlie's waistline only expanded in lockstep with each successive 26.2 effort.Deep down, Charlie knew he would forever remain a prisoner to his seemingly hopeless food addiction until he could summon the courage to face the emotional dysfunction, mental imbalance and spiritual malaise that had been driving his unhealthy lifestyle choices for as long as he could remember. The inside job terrified Charlie. But it's always darkest before the dawn. At the nadir of his hopelessness, Charlie awoke one day to find his bedroom spinning before suddenly collapsing to the floor. A visit to the doctor only brought more bad news.Charlie Jabaley has a brain tumor. But rather than treat his diagnosis as tragic, Charlie decided to embrace it as a gift — the push he needed to once and for all to face himself honestly, take willing inventory of his life, and finally undertake the measures necessary to save himself from himself.Charlie Jabaley only had to change one thing — everything. One year ago, he walked away from the company he started, leaving millions of dollars on the table to decamp Atlanta for Los Angeles. Completely restructuring his relationship with food, he's lost over 120 pounds and kept it off. Without medication, his tumor has shrunk to almost nothing. And Charlie has finally achieved his lifelong dream, transforming himself from executive (CEO Charlie) to athlete (Charlie Rocket), training for his first Ironman in New Zealand this March. For the first time in his life, he's both healthy and happy. But mostly, Charlie Jabaley is free. What he did, how he did it and why is the subject of today's conversation. It's a powerful exchange with an everyman hero who wants you to know that you do not struggle alone. That it's never too late to change. And no matter how far you have drifted from the person you aspire to be, there is both hope and help.Welcome to 2018 people.
