Chia-Lin Simmons, CEO of LogicMark, is developing technology solutions to help seniors age independently and safely. Their AgeTech ecosystem addresses the requirements and comfort levels of the diverse aging population and provides predictive technology to identify potential health issues and emergencies. The key is keeping a human-centric approach to the application of this technology and integration with other health monitoring devices and apps.   Chia-Lin explains, "At LogicMark, we tell people that the medical react technology business is saying that our job is to make better technology to help identify that fall or a catastrophe or a health issue, and then help as we can within that golden hour in a medical emergency. When I joined the company in June of 2021, our goal was not just to be even better at reactive technology but to develop predictive technology, which is to take a look at the pattern of living and your experiences and being able to stop that first initial catastrophe or fall if we can. And that's where our interest and a lot of our IT development have been focused on." "Our job as technology providers to caretakers and those they love is not that we're meant to be technology that is helicoptering over, for example, your parents. Our job is to provide a safety net. And I think that visual, to give you a sense of what we think is important, at the end of the day, your parents are not your children. They want to live independently and live the life that they want to live fully as grown adults. And so our job is to provide them with the capability to be independent and safe, as well as the safety and privacy they want as grown adults. And so, how does that translate? At the center of everything we do, we call compassionate technology or human-centric technology." #LogicMark #AgeTech #HealthTech #MedTech #ElderCare #AgingInPlace #SeniorSafety #Innovation #FutureOfHealth #HealthcareInnovation #ConnectedHealth logicmark.com Download the transcript here

A black square on Instagram doesn't make you an anti-racist, but there is a path to follow. Welcome to From Woke to Work, the Anti-Racist Journey, a podcast created and hosted by Kamala Avila-Salmon, with the mission to make an impactful dent in people's understand of how to actually combat racism. Whether you're an ally ready to take action or a black person with a bunch of ally-related questions, this podcast will draw a clear path for you to follow towards true anti-racism. Our journey together, at least this portion of it, is coming to an end. Now that we have fully unpacked the anti-racist journey, we want to end with FAQs. If you've listened before, you know that our FAQs are not “frequently asked questions” (though they are) but instead stands for “frequent ally questions”, which are questions that Kamala has heard a lot in her time cultivating intentional conversations about race and racism. When you're learning something new, it's normal to have questions and I think having lots of questions CAN be a sign of high-engagement. Notice we said they CAN be- sometimes, they instead function as excuses to not take action, as reasons why it's too hard, too complicated, or not practical. Examples of those include “I know we need to talk about Black issues but what about….(insert some other group here?” Or “Don't you think White people face just as much racism as Black people now?” In today's episode, we will focus on genuinely offered, highly constructive FAQs. The ones that come from people who really want to do the work and I invited back a few of our amazing guests from past episodes to help me unpack the best ones. Welcome back Jovian Zayne, the powerhouse who kicked us off in the Awareness episode, Chia-Lin Simmons who helped us sort through the importance of empathy, and Terri J Vaughn, who joined us for a discussion on Allyship.  Jump straight into: (02:15) - I said or did something perceived as racist, what should I do now? - “If you're more concerned about being right than getting it right, you will continue to make mistakes and sit in it in a way that doesn't move the work forward” (11:36) - Strategies and tactics to increase commitment to hire diverse talent… or create one - “You're going to have to examine policies and procedures and examine the relationships you have that help to bring in exceptional people of color, and we're everywhere.” (23:03) - Do we really need more data to know that diversity is good business? - “They already know the impact of our culture, of our voices, of our fashion, of our style… I think that it's just embedded in their culture to find ways to impact our influence by saying stuff like, well, they don't sell over the seas.”  (34:37) - Who should I be supporting? Vetted leads of organizations that are tackling racial equity issues  - "One that comes to mind for me is the Equal Justice Institute. Changing systems, as opposed to solely focusing on individual cases or individual anecdotes. I think we have to really look at the root causes and the root systems." (36:26) - Why it takes a lot more than just creating a Diversity Chief Officer, goals and metrics to educate inside an organization - "Empathy is so necessary for us to see each other. You've got to fund this work. You can't say, 'we want to allocate $10,000 for this work over the year, or even for a day of training'… that just doesn't work. D&I work helps people to be fundamentally better." (43:46) - Stop clapping yourself because you marched. On diversity clauses in the VC world and other ways to give real crap about these issues - "When was the last time that you bought something from a black owned business? […] No more writing checks to VC's who don't have a black woman on staff. That's not an investment.” (48:07) - How to acknowledge the inherent challenges my black teammates may face in a predominantly white company or team? -  "With that same thinking, I invite the person to think 'How

In this week's episode Kamala zeros in on empathy because it is a critical stop on the journey to ensuring any plans we make to address racism going forward are grounded on an understanding of our shared humanity. Anti-Black racism is not a Black people problem, it is a White supremacy problem. Until non-Black, and especially White people, see the problem as theirs to solve, we can't make progress. Where sympathy is to share in the sorrow of another, empathy is to feel the sorrow of another as if it were your own while being conscious of the fact that this is a thought experiment. You still know you have your own shoes that you walk in but you mentally or emotionally, envision what it would be like to walk in the shoes of another. It brings us closer to those who may be very different from us.  For this discussion, Kamala is joined by Fay Johnson, an ethical behavior change and human-centered design expert, and Chia-Lin Simmons, a successful tech serial entrepreneur. Fay founded Deliberate Discourse in 2015 in response to the ongoing violence against black people in America. Deliberate is an intentional, guided experience that allows people, and especially non-Black people, to engage in deep conversations about racism in America. Chia-Lin is the CEO / Co-Founder of LookyLoo and Co-Founder of Orange Bridge Ventures; most relevant to our discussion today is her personal journey as an outspoken advocate and ally for the Black community, in her professional and personal life. Jump straight into: (00:45) - A brief context around empathy and racism in the United States - “Anti-black racism is not a black people problem, it is a white supremacy problem.” (04:56) - How everyone has the right (and obligation) to stand up against racial justice - “I remember feeling in my body that very visceral response that I needed to do something. A dear friend of mine, Stephanie, said: ‘You will for sure screw it up, but you should do it anyway because the work needs to be done. Just get going and stop questioning herself about being perfect.'” (16:40) - The importance of empathy and why it is so crucial in the Anti-Racist Journey - “Having that kind of empathy and imagining being in those shoes has really allowed people to help do the bridge into having those conversations in the United States.” (26:34) - How conscious conversations can fight polarization and what racism in the business ecosystem looks like - “People may not be aware of the number of walls and privileges that essentially are structured for white people and against people of color.” (37:10) - How power and privilege prevent people from accessing empathy - “Maybe it's time for some of us to take a step back and put other people forward, because we need to hear their voices.” (44:41) - How to cultivate empathy through “bridging” - “If we are really committed to being good leaders, a good skill to learn would be paying attention to the signals that you're getting from people when they do raise the topic.” Resources https://www.deliberatediscourse.com/ (Deliberate Discourse) https://lookyloo.ai/ (LookyLoo) Connect with https://www.linkedin.com/in/faymjohnson/ (Fay) Connect with https://twitter.com/chialinsimmon (Chia-Lin) Thanks for tuning in! Online clothing purchases today are premised on the idea that all you need to know is your size or measurements in order to guarantee a good fit, and while men can often get away with this, the reality is that women's clothing purchases are much more complex. The fact that more than 30-50% of all online apparel purchases are returned is a testament to this, but even those who have the luxury of shopping in person struggle with getting the feedback they can rely upon and feeling confident with their purchases. More than 71% of millennial women send selfies to their friends when trying on clothes, but the chances that they'll get a response from every friend while they're still in the store are low. Now there's a solution: LookyLoo, an AI-powered social commerce platform that allows users to post photos and receive direct feedback on fashion choices from a cloud of other consumers. Meanwhile, the AI (better known as “Lucy”) learns based on how you and others to vote, leading to stronger, personalized, and specific recommendations. What looks good in fashion is contextual to location and age group, and Lucy takes this into account for every user. “Fashion is art, and for a lot of people it's an opportunity to be something beautiful,” says Chia-Lin Simmons, founder of LookyLoo. The app is already enormously popular, and the team at LookyLoo is looking to the future. Where's that, you might ask? Cosmetics.  Tune in for all the details and find LookyLoo on Twitter and Instagram.

In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy), Craig Calder (twitter: @ccalder), Chia-Lin Simmons (twitter: @zeropts) and Steve Hatch (twitter:@shatch) make their predictions for 2010. John’s Predictions Google will give Apple the most competition of any other company in mobile Apple will begin to take web services seriously, embrace “content in the cloud” Early adopters will burn out on social media eBook readers will become mainstream, $9.99 will remain the standard price point. Big publishers scream in agony. Magazine publishers need it to survive. Facebook’s privacy settings will spur lawsuits Live and real-time will be commonplace among early adopters Steve’s Predictions: SEO is Dead! Long-live real-time search The fax machine will see a resurgence via twitter iPhone and Android adoption will start driving down data plan costs to make mobile data almost free Apple’s Tablet will be a no-show or way too expensive to be relevant Microsoft will finally lose ubiquity with IE due to the EU settlement and the push of Firefox, Chrome and other Webkit browsers (Safari) Location based apps will be standard for all devices (mobile and otherwise) No one in the ODM Crew will buy a Blueray player or disc EVER! By Q4 2010 30% of all TV sold will be Internet capable Cloud computing … was the hype in 2009, but will be a standard for all tech companies including Apple Facebook will hit 500M users by the end of the year Craig’ s Predictions: Hyper local will be old news You’ll have no Mac tablet and like it Tiger Woods will keep sponsorship with EA Sports Gaming Bing will leave Yahoo in the dust and easily take over 2nd place in search The Bing iphone app will be huge Chia-Lin’s predictions: Android will be 15% of the smartphone market in US market by end of 2010, Android market place will be extensive Lala will be Apple’s cloud/web service for media distribution, starting to minimize their download model The eReader market will heat up by Q4 , 2010. The Kindle will hit critical mass for Q4 holiday season, and go for a sale price of $100 The magazine “hulu” by the consortium of magazine providers will build momentum by Q3 in terms of partnerships, but not launch until 20115. Chia-Lin will have the Starwars sleeping bag from ThinkGeek that was featured in Gizmodo (sleeping in guts is the way to keep warm on a frozen planet after all…). Will never be able to get a mini-donut maker since she is devoting 2010 to taking a pilates classes and getting in shape… Chia-Lin may end up with a iphone…tech gods willing…(or else, she will have to go with the Droid by mid next year) Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. Chia-Lin thinks it may have the potential of being vaporware. We’re waiting for mobile clients (especially on the iPhone) to support Twitter Lists. Threadsy is working on Twitter Lists support. Parse.ly is in private beta. Read Write Web calls it “The Pro Bloggers Feed Reader.” Lazyweb is a similar client. It’s going to be a tough job for some of these services to get people to switch from Google Reader. Chia-Lin is holding back on her Droid purchase. It’s only a CMDA phone that she can’t use internationally plus, she thinks that Verizon may get the iPhone. Will Verizon get the iPhone any time soon? We hash it out. John has started reading Kindle books on his iPhone…even after questioning why anyone would do that. Doh! The ODM crew wants to know if John has purchased any more Vooks. Yes, he decided to give Vooks another chance and bought Gary Vaynerchuk’s “Crush It” in Vook format. Amazon has just released Kindle software for Windows that’s decidedly for the netbook crowd. The class action lawsuits against the social gaming companies have arrived. Are Facebook and Myspace liable for the actions of these networks? We doubt it. A boxee box is coming! We want. Rob built his own MythTV box! Netflix may support the MPAA 30-day window on new releases! We’re not happy. Why not release James Cameron’s upcoming film “Avatar” across all platforms at once, just to see how the revenue streams unfold? Rupert Murdoch said that he’s going to block Google and remove all content from his properties from the search engine. Hah! “This is the media mogul equivalent of Jumping the Shark.” An interesting coup for Microsoft should Murdoch cut a deal with Bing to allow them to index his content.
