133: Another Day Above Ground with Carolyn Strauss We are delighted to speak with Carolyn Strauss today! Carolyn has had a fantastic career! She has had an apparel collection and was CEO of a multi-million-dollar company. Now, she is a podcaster, speaker, and emcee. Carolyn has loads of energy and tons of business experience! She joins us today to offer her advice and share some great tips and insights for business owners! We hope you enjoy listening to today's inspiring conversation with Carolyn Strauss! Bio: Carolyn Strauss, CSP, is a professional keynote speaker, emcee, and trusted corporate advisor with over 30 years of experience both on stage and on camera. Carolyn is the former CEO of the Carolyn Strauss Collection™ an apparel collection exclusively sold on the Home Shopping Network where she sold over $160Million worth of her own product. She is an expert on sales, persuasion, and execution. Carolyn has worked with associations and executive teams across all industries. She trains “Wicked Smart People” on how to communicate effectively and she is a certified Working Genius™ facilitator. She has appeared on PBS, ABC, NBC, HSN, Food Network, and Lifetime television network. She is an active member of the Screen Actors Guild and is the author of 5 books. She is the host of the long-running podcast "Another Day Above Ground" and believes a good day contains chocolate. Cigar packs The National Speakers Association used to have specialized professional education groups called PEGs for their members. Someone started a group called The Cigar Pack for the rebels and outcasts. At the Cigar PEG, humorous speakers get together, smoke cigars, and get to know one another. Most of the money raised goes to charity. Carolyn joined the Cigar PEG 16-18 years ago. She loves their philanthropic approach to fun! She met her podcast partner, Dale Irvin, at the Cigar PEG. How Carolyn became CEO of a clothing company After graduating from college, Carolyn moved to New York and made a living as a plus-size model. Then she got certified as an aerobics instructor and personal trainer, hired two models, designed their leotards, and created an exercise video. Home Shopping Network Carolyn suggested to her modeling client in New York that they sell the exercise video along with exercise clothes. So they pitched the Home Shopping Network (HSN). The HSN did neither exercise videos nor exercise clothes, but they asked Carolyn and her client to put together a line of sportswear for them to launch several months later. From failure to success Their sportswear failed to sell when Carolyn first presented it on TV, and she got pulled off the set. They had to do another show with a different network an hour later. That time, their stretch pants sold very well! So the HSN offered to bring Carolyn and her partner back if they designed another sportswear collection in the same fabric. The three-legged stool of home shopping Home shopping is all about presentation, pricing, and product. The HSN told Carolyn and her partner that they could be successful if they had a great presentation, great pricing, and a great product. They did, and for the next eighteen years, Carolyn and her partner made their living selling clothes to the HSN. They made more than 160 million dollars in wholesale sales between 1997 and 2015! Easy-wear-easy-care clothing When doing business consulting, Carolyn always explains to business owners that you need to know what you do, who you do it for, and why they care. Everyone who worked for her knew that they made easy-wear, easy-care clothing for busy women so that after getting dressed, they did not have to think about themselves for the rest of the day. 2015 In 2015, HSN merged with another company. They decided to shift and move in the direction of celebrities and brand names. CSP Carolyn got her CSP because her dad always told her to do anything she wanted to do in the world and be the best she could be at doing it! Fashion show expert Carolyn started commentating on fashion shows when she was 25 years old. She became the highest-paid plus-sized fashion show expert and fashion expert in the United States. Speaking Some college students approached Carolyn at a fashion show she was commentating on and asked her to speak at their college. She did, and it went well. After that, she began taking on speaking engagements. A great opportunity In 2008, Carolyn was at a National Speakers Association conference. Vistage, a CEO Mastermind group, was a sponsor, and they invited her to audition. They called a month later to say they wanted to work with her. One of their chairs helped Carolyn tailor the material she had designed for women business owners and make it applicable to all business owners. She has subsequently done more than 200 presentations for Vistage. She also speaks for various other associations. Emcee work During the pandemic, Carolyn started doing emcee work. Advice for business leaders When something is not right, speak up and get it fixed. Podcasting Carolyn's podcast partner, Dale, had been doing a podcast with a friend and comedian called Tim Slagle. The podcast was winding down, but Dale and Tim still wanted to do a podcast, and they wanted to include a liberal female point of view. So they brought Carolyn in to meet Tim. They recorded a few podcast episodes relevant to baby boomers, and things worked out. So Carolyn joined them as a podcast partner. She makes no money from the podcast, but she loves doing it, and it looks great on her resume! Covid Doing the weekly podcast kept Carolyn razor sharp and helped her stay on top of her game during Covid. How you present yourself In business, the way you present yourself is crucial! If you want to succeed without really trying, dress to suit the part. Advice for business owners Business owners must be clear with their employees about their expectations and how they want them to work. They must ensure that all their employees are happy doing what they do. Business owners should also have a clear roadmap of where they are heading and what they hope to achieve, and they should engage their employees in getting there. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking to another icon in our industry, Ed Rigsbee, of Rigsbee Research. Ed has spent his entire career helping associations and societies to recruit and maintain their members and increase their revenue. He has written five books: one of them on soccer, one on member recruitment, and three of them on strategic alliances, and he has also written more than 2,500 articles. In this episode, Ed shares his story and talks to us about providing value and the amazing community he started, called The Cigar Peg. It is very important right now for associations to provide value, so we're sure that you will enjoy our conversation with Ed. Ed Rigsbee bio: Ed Rigsbee, (CSP) Certified Speaking Professional, (CAE) Certified Association Executive, is the ROI Guy. He is obsessed with helping individuals and organizations to both receive and give more return on investment (ROI) in everything that they do. He regularly serves two sectors of the economy—helping corporations to develop and maintain strategic alliances—and helping trade associations and professional societies to grow their membership. Ed is the originator of the “Member ROI Valuation Process” and “Member ROI-Centric Organization Transition.” Ed's background Ed used to work at Yosemite National Park as a retail manager. In the winter, he was made manager of the ski shop, but he got fired for being obnoxious just a week before the end of the season. Throughout the season, Ed's sunglasses supplier had been trying to get Ed to work for him. He contacted Ed once again, just before he left the park, asking him to interview in Southern California. Ed went along to the interview. Afterward, he got handed a company car and a credit card. He took to selling sunglasses like a duck to water and started selling sunglasses to ski shops. Product clinics Ed noticed that the ski reps used to do product clinics, which he found fascinating. So, he bought a spectrometer and started giving product clinics at ski shops. That boosted his sales, which prompted both the company he was working for and some retail customers to ask him to train their salespeople. Professional speaking At a sales meeting in 1984, Ed met the NSA president. He was impressed with her, and that sparked his interest in finding out what professional speaking was. A few years later, he joined the National Speakers Association and started doing paid talks. Time to leave In 1990, the owner of the sunglasses organization took Ed out for lunch. He told Ed that it was time for him to leave the organization. Ed Rigsbee started his business Ed Rigsbee decided to start a business of his own. He started off by going after associations in the retail world, and his business kept on growing. His first book In 1994, he wrote his first book, The Art of Partnering. That took him down the path of doing alliance work, and he did that for the next fifteen years. Selling speaking services Throughout his career, Ed resonated with selling speaking services to associations. A roundtable workshop Ed got hired to be the keynote speaker for the California Alarm Association. He was asked by the president of the company to do an industry roundtable workshop. The board members at the workshop wanted to discuss the value of the association. Qualitative research Before he knew what qualitative research was, Ed was doing qualitative research because of that workshop. He followed that up by writing his first article for that company, on member ROI. How Ed Rigsbee helps associations grow their memberships Around 2015, Ed Rigsbee started getting less aggressive around the strategic alliance work he was doing. Today, he focuses mostly on helping associations grow their memberships by teaching them how to prove the return on investment they deliver in actual dollar numbers. ROI Member Recruitment Brochure Ed started helping his association clients to produce a simple, three-fold ROI Member Recruitment Brochure. It makes it easy to show why a business decision is a good one. The feature of association membership Unless it is a closed meeting, anyone can go to an association meeting. The feature of association membership is the differential or discount that the member gets. The cost of virtual meetings has gone down The cost of virtual meetings has gone down because they require no physical space. The attendance at many meetings has been boosted a lot recently, so currently, many associations are making double the profit they were making before from meetings. Virtual regional meetings Many associations are talking about putting on virtual regional meetings for lower-level employees. They are planning in-person meetings for the CEO and top-level employees because those employees will afford to pay higher fees to go to the meeting. Five years from now Ed predicts that in-person meetings will slowly start getting more populated, and five years from now, things will be back to where they were before. The challenge with sponsors If you're going to put a representative from a company on at an event, you should say that the event is a sponsored one. If a sponsor speaks at an event, they should talk about the category topic and not their brand. Smart associations are giving mandatory presenter training to their sponsors. The future of communities Ed believes that associations need to do a better job with their communities. The chapters in cities need to create satellite communities to ensure that they also reach their members in the outlying areas. The Cigar Peg Community The Cigar Peg Community is a community of professional speakers that got started in 1999. It raises money for charities. It used to be a professional emphasis group, and then it got changed to a professional expert group. Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Ed On Website

Ed Rigsbee (@edrigsbee on Twitter) joins host Craig Price to talk about the ROI of association membership. Many of podcast listeners are either currently part of an association or even in the leadership of that association. My first question: When are you booking me for your next event? My second question: What are you doing to grow or at the least maintaining your membership? I hear from associations all across the country that they’re always worried about the membership numbers. People don’t see associations in the same light anymore. Thankfully Ed’s got a new book called The ROI of Membership-Today's Missing Link for Explosive Growth. This is what he does, find ways for associations to increase membership by increasing their value to their members. The two talk about how to stop giving the cow, the milk and anything else bovine-related away for free. If you don’t know Ed, he’s also the founder of Cigar PEG which is a charity that raises money for several charities but especially the National Speakers Association Foundation. I’ve partnered with Ed to create Cigar PEG radio, a weekly podcast highlighting some of the people you might find hanging out in the Cigar PEG suite at the NSA convention. Host Craig Price celebrates the 100th episode with a speakers roundtable. A collection of past guests (and a new one) talk about being a speaker, their mistakes and why they do it. During the National Speakers Association convention this past July, Craig gathered Avish Parashar, Robert Bradford, Steve Rizzo, Jess Pettitt and new friend Patrick Maurer to talk about the ups and downs of being a speaker. What is a professional speaker? Is it just the check that makes you a professional or is there more to it? What do other speakers do that irritates you? What monumental mistakes have you made (this is where the explicit tag comes into play!)? Why do you do what you do? Get ready for a fun, enlightening discussion as Craig juggles 5 guests at the same time! Some huge thanks go to Ed Rigsbee with the Cigar PEG for the location. Finding a place for 6 people to record was a daunting task but Ed made it easy peasy. Please go to CigarPEG.com and learn about this great charity and how you can contribute. Also thanks to past guest Chip Lutz for being the bouncer at the speakers roundtable. He was the sole audient (is that a word? it is now) and kept the riff-raff out of the room while the podcast was being recorded. One of the cool things about the convention was that so many past guests were in attendance so Craig commissioned a quick group photo to commemorate the occasion.
Every night when the speeches and awards end, the bar closes and the majority of NSA Members are tucked up in bed dreaming of miles of aisles, there's only one place left to party, network, grab a drink or three and enjoy a stogie: the private suite where the Cigar PEG meets. The idea of a Cigar PEG (a PEG in NSA-speak is a "Professional Expert Group") originated in 1998 by chairperson and chief party animal Ed Rigsbee. This year the Cigar PEG hosted a fantastic party aboard the USS Midway as well as their open-bar suite in Room 477 at the hotel. Ed and his Cigar PEG colleagues offer people an opportunity to unwind after a busy day at the convention. The $75 membership fee and the monies raised by the various auctions go toward charity. For a complete background on the Cigar PEG, including photo galleries of members enjoying life, visit their website. If you plan to attend the 2008 convention in New York City and want to avoid paying $7 for well drinks at the hotel bar, consider joining the Cigar PEG. Do the math. Click on the podcast icon below to hear Ed share his views on the value of the Cigar PEG.
