Barnstar!, Boston's premiere kinda bluegrass and definitely bombastic band, has released their new album Furious Kindness and we're #blessed to welcome Mark Erelli and Zachariah Hickman to the pod. Originally a fun side hustle and bluegrass vehicle for Zack, the group, which also includes Charlie Rose and Taylor and Jake Armerding, started very casually performing at the legendary local Cantab Lounge. Zack accurately likens the vibe of the place to a basement Star Wars Cantina full of bluegrass bands. In between their main gigs with performers like Josh Ritter and Lori McKenna and solo careers, Barnstar! has cultivated an explosive live performance filled with energy and emotional expression leaving concert attendees cheering and crying along. Included in their repertoire are some of the finest music covers including many that you'd never expect to see on a kind of bluegrass band album, like The Hold Steady, Patty Griffin, Elliott Smith and Elizabeth & The Catapult. We talk about what it's like to bring a cover song to the band to learn as well as co-writing with friends like Dinty Child and Chuck Prophet. We'd be remiss if we did not address the alien-like quality of Mark Erelli's singing voice and learn that it is because of his bestie Zack and Barnstar! that he can sing like this. Now he finds himself performing vocal warm-ups before hitting the stage with the guys. Not something he ever thought he'd do. All members of Barnstar! contribute and sing to the new album Furious Kindness, an album that just wants to shout in your face about how awesome you really are.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? On this episode of The Rocklopedia Fakebandica, we go back a long time ago, to a galaxy far, far away, where we discuss two alien fake bands playing questionably named music. We'll expound on how their very existence highlights the universe building in major blockbuster film franchises, and the tinkering of old classics by filmmakers who should know better.
So much good stuff… From better and worse James Bonds (Connery versus Moore, the right and wrong Brosnhan… Brosnan… Brosnahan…. Remington Steele, and the “other” Bonds) to Lotus Esprit (and which one) versus DB5, DB7, 750, and AMX versus Javelin, the Gearhead Consultancy promises to ricochet off the point. Bond guns. Bond villains. Octopussy versus A View to a Kill. Pussy Galore versus Verper Lynn. Add to that a celebration of crappy guns, like an A5 Remington 1911 that shoots itself, a break-action Rossi that only shoots on safe, and Jim's Thumper, a personal pocket five-round .44 Special super-snub that'll deafen the bad guy whether or not the round hits anyone. Also, Bond tunes ala ska band (what?): Skatellites, Roland Alfonso, McCartney, G n' R, Duran Duran and the Propellerheads. Also also, very nice sips from FH Beerworks, Living the Dream and Epic Brewing.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Tolkien's work is his thinking about creativity. Following a question from a listener, Jacob Rennaker and Julia Golding discuss this using the poem Mythopoeia, the short story Leaf by Niggle and the essay 'On Fairy Stories' - all must-reads for Tolkien fans and anyone interested in writing fantasy. How does free will fit in the world of a Creator - and what has jazz music got to do with it? What was wrong with Feanor? And what is the value of the things you make? Stay tuned for musings about the spin-off series about the Star Wars Cantina band and much more! For those who are interested, here's a link to the Benjamin Saxton article mentioned during the conversation - well worth a read! https://dc.swosu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1096&context=mythlore

Stephen James Taylor - Musician & Explorer : Trans-tonal Music - Transcendent ThinkingStephen James Taylor has a unique musical identity. His style has often been called “Afro-futuristic) as it represents a blend of classical, rock, blues, gospel, world music, homemade instruments, and avante garde. His past projects include scoring Richard Tanne's 2020 Amazon film Chemical Hearts, music for the Star Wars Cantina at Disneyland's Galaxy's Edge (2019) {the first microtonal music ever in rotation at Disneyland), the PBS documentary by Charles Burnett entitled Power To Heal (2018), Maya Angelou-And Still I Rise (2016), Richard Tanne's theatrical release, Southside With You (2016), Tom Bradley: Bridging the Divide (2015), People Are The Sky, (2015), Marvel's TV Series The Black Panther, music for theme parks such as Disney World and The Red Sea Astrarium, Universal's The Adventures of Brer Rabbit, Disney's Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas (for which he won Best Original Score at the 2004 DVDX Awards), Teachers Pet, a Disney animated feature with wide theatrical release in 2003, and most of the films directed by Academy Award winner, Charles Burnett including To Sleep With Anger and the blues documentary, Warming By the Devil's Fire produced by Martin Scorsese. He has composed scores for many of Robert Townsend's films such as The Making of the Five Heartbeats (2017) Of Boys and Men (2008), Carmen, A HipHopera (2004) and Holiday Heart (2000). In 2001 he wrote underscore and produced some of the songs for Clark Johnson's Boycott (HBO films) as well as his 2018 Netflix film, Juanita (2017). In 1996 he was commissioned to write an orchestral suite for the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics and was one of the conductors of the Atlanta Symphony for that occasion. In 1993, Stephen received an Emmy nomination for an R&B song he wrote for I'll Fly Away as well as a Daytime Emmy nomination for his classical orchestral score for an episode of the animated series, The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa. Other Emmy nominations have been for the PBS movie Brother Future (1991), and Raw Toonage an animated series for Disney. In 1999 and 2000 he has received Annie nominations for his work on Disney's Mickey Mouseworks. He has also done string arrangements for James Taylor and for Crosby, Stills, and Nash. He is currently working on a cartoon series for Netflix. After graduating from Stanford University in 1976 with a B.A. in music, he studied composition for four years with Henri Lazarof, professor of music at UCLA. He studied microtonality with Erv Wilson for 20 years with whom he helped develop a new 810 key microtonal keyboard used in many of the above scores. Taylor's second chamber symphony was commissioned and premiered by the Pasadena Chamber Orchestra in 1983. The Detroit Symphony later performed it in 1990. His various chamber works have been performed throughout the country. He has done a great deal of composing in surround sound. His 2001 “COME ALIVE” premiered at the El Paso Microhoot and has been presented many times since. If there is a top-level conspiracy, it's onedesigned to put us, satirists, out of business. That's why The Babylon Beegets fact-checked, but secret FISA spying warrants don't. I do know thatpuckish trolls have been outraging online censors by creating fakememes of outrageous, fictitious stories allegedly from TheAtlantic, embodying its distinctive stance and tone: That of a nastyeugenicist visiting sedated patients in an old-style state mental hospital, addressing them in quasi-baby talks like a bitter kindergarten teacher orformer Vice President Gore. And meanwhile marking on his chart the datewhen the patient is to be sterilized.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We've waited five long years for May the Fourth to land on a Monday and we're not wasting it! Actually, five years ago I don't think this show batted a lightsaber at the notion, but this time we've got the Star Wars songs you and the public love and want to hear!It may be a little telling that two out of three songs are about Baby Yoda and one is a classic about the original trilogy. Sorry Rey, Finn and young Annakin. 1. "Baby Yoda" by Beth Kinderman 2. "Small Round Yoda" by the great Luke Ski 3. News of the Stupid! 4. "Star Wars Cantina" by Mark Jonathan Davis Beth Kinderman is at BethKinderman.com, The great Luke Ski is at thegreatLukeSki.com, and Mark Jonathan Davis is at markjonathandavis.com Thank you to our Patreon backers for helping make this show possible!

Asunción Molinos Gordo is a research-based artist strongly influenced by disciplines such as anthropology, sociology and cultural studies. In her practice she questions the categories that define ‘innovation’ in mainstream discourses today, working to generate a less urban-centric way of understanding progress. Her latest work, In Transit: Botany of a Journey, is on display at the Jameel Arts Centre's Artist's Garden until May 2020. It consists of a garden grown from seeds that have travelled in the intestines of people that either live in or visit the city of Dubai. Most of the seeds we eat in our daily meals pass unnoticed and survive the process of human digestion, leaving our bodies undamaged and remaining germinable. Dubai as a global city and the business hub of the Middle East receives an average of 90 million travellers a year, coming from 270 destinations, across six continents. The culinary habits of such a heterogeneous population is incomparable; all of the seeds ingested by Dubai’s fluid and transient population make their way to the same location — the city’s main sewage treatment plant in Al-Aweer. If given the appropriate conditions, the seeds contained in the plant’s final, clean ‘sludge’ will germinate and grow into adult plants.Asunción's Artist’s Garden is grown from the seeds that survive. The project reflects on ideas around globality, interconnectivity, mobility and cohabitation, and challenges the nature-culture divide that places human activity as a separate category from other natural phenomena; through the artist’s long-term research and the germination of the seeds, Asuncion redraws a way back to human/nature interconnectedness. The main focus of her work is contemporary peasantry. Her understating of the figure of the small or medium farmer is not merely as food producer but as cultural agent, responsible for both perpetuating traditional knowledge and for generating new expertise. She employs installation, photography, video, sound and other media to examine the rural realm driven by a strong desire to understand the value and complexity of its cultural production, as well as the burdens that keep it invisible and marginalised. She has produced work reflecting on land usage, nomad architecture, farmers’ strikes, bureaucracy on territory, transformation of rural labour, biotechnology and global food trade.Molinos Gordo won the Sharjah Biennial Prize 2015 with her project WAM (World Agriculture Museum) and represented Spain official section at the 13th Havana Biennial 2019. Her work has been exhibited at venues including V&A Museum (London), Delfina Foundation (London), ARNOLFINI (Bristol), The Townhouse Gallery (Cairo), Darat Al Funun (Amman), Tranzit (Prague), ART BASEL Miami Beach (US), Cappadox Festival (Uchisar-Turkey), The Finnish Museum of Photography (Helsinki), Museo Carrillo Gil (Mexico), MAZ Museo de Arte de Zapopan (Mexico), MUSAC (León, Spain), CA2M (Madrid, Spain), CAB de Burgos (Spain), Matadero (Madrid, Spain) and La Casa Encendida (Madrid, Spain), among others. She obtained her B.F.A. from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where she also pursued her Master in Contemporary Art Theory and Practice. She is currently studying Anthropology and Ethnography at UNED (Spain).Molinos Gordo is represented by Travesia Cuatro gallery and lives between Spain and Egypt.Enjoy the show!Show Notes:01:15 - Growing up in a small rural village in Spain.01:45 - What is International Peasantry?3:45 - Communication without language, but through commonalities.4:15 - Her background in fine arts5:00 - The diversity of professions in small rural villages5:45 - Moving to Egypt for a research residency.6:30 - The rural theme she explores in her works.7:15 - The ongoing research and artworks.8:30 - Being part of the Sharjah Bienniale with her work, the World Agriculture Museum10:45 - On representing Spain at the Havana Biennale, campesino campesino (from Peasant to Peasant)13:30 - The knowledge sharing aspect of the project.14:30 - Taking part in the V&A exhibition, “food bigger than the plate”.16:15 - Crafting the CVs of farmers through hyperboles.18:00 - In Transit: Botany of a Journey22:30 - On working with collaborators to bring her idea to life: Dawn Ross and Nadine23:45 - What they did with 2 cubic meters of fecal matter to grow a garden.28:15 - Bacteria & the Star Wars Cantina.29:30 - The reason why the first batch is not recommended / suitable for human consumption.31:00 - Why the UAE is an ideal location for such an art installation project.32:15 - Being inspired by the works of Timothy Morton.35:30 - The way she learns about things is through hands-on experiences.36:20 - “Each individual renders information differently”37:30 - The things she has the tendency to do.40:00 - The idea of nature-culture divide; interdependence and mutual recognition44:30 - Documenting Darwin’s Nightmare.48:15 - Companion planting in the terrace garden. This week I'm talking with music supervisor, composer and drummer Eric Kalver. Eric is in L.A. and stays extremely busy currently working for the video game publisher Activision. When he's not finding cool songs to put into video games, he is either composing music or playing drums in a bunch of different bands around L.A. He took time out to talk with me about his journey from being a magician's assistant (yes, you read that correctly) to being one of the top music supervisors in L.A.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*Eric grew up in a family of magicians.*Check out The Amazing Eric and Bozo on You Tube.*I went to Berklee School of Music for drumming and began taking arranging classes.*I realized by doing arranging that would help me stick out of the crowd.*A “lead sheet” is a music chart that is condensed so that it’s easy to read and on just a page or two so the whole band can read off the same sheet.*I moved to L.A. sooner than I planned because people told me that the jobs would be gone if I waited.*My first job in L.A. came because my father knew someone who produced the Daytime Emmy Awards and got me a job as a production assistant, moving chairs and sets and getting people where they needed to be.*That got me work doing other entertainments jobs through the same company for about 3 months while I looked for music jobs.*I was able to email and connect with a person from Berklee who lived in L.A. and eventually got me work as a copyist.“Copyist work” has to do with the sheet music that is being played by an orchestra or player.*I would take the master score the orchestrator was working with and I would extract the parts from the master score using a computer program called Finale.*In Finale I would go into each instrument part and “clean it up" once it was extracted from the main score.“Clean it up” meaning the spacing of the notes, making sure the notes make sense when you read them, cleaning up the dynamics, making sure things aren’t all over the place.*A “copyist” is like a proof reader for a book editor.*Having a network of like minded people who do the same kind of work as you who, if you get along with them and they trust your work ethic, then you can be recommended for jobs in the future.*When networking, instead of offering my card to someone, it’s best if I get a person’s business card so they are the top of my mind and I can follow up with them because I may not be on the top of their mind.*It’s better not to talk about the thing you want to network about until the other person brings it up.*It’s all about “the hang.”*Because of my Berklee connections I found a composer looking for an assistant. I got hired by Brian Tyler who worked on the Fast and Furious movies and Avengers: Age of Ultron.*I didn’t study composing in college but I needed a job and was willing to learn and since Hollywood is a film scoring town, I applied for the job and I got it.*When you’re an assistant to a composer, it’s not necessarily a job where you’re doing music the whole time.*My job was more of an administrative job when I started. I was picking up laundry and lunch and running errands. That’s part of the job. They don’t tell you in school how to arrange the food and do hospitality, how to treat clients who are coming into the studio, etc.*Attention to detail is important.*Taking care of these details can prove to your boss that you can handle bigger tasks later on.*Now, if I’m hiring a musician and they aren’t easy to hang out with it’s just not going to work.*I got to do some orchestrating on the movies Fast Five and Skyline.*As an orchestrator I was taking instrument parts and deciding how to split up chords that the composer created with the instrument.*I eventually moved on and got a job at Alfred Music Publishing which is one of the main music education sheet music publishers.*I got that job because of another connection from Berklee.*I was the Choral Production Editor which meant I would take sheet music and proof read it for grammatical and musical errors.*It’s another administrative job. I was helping organize the releases of choral music and helping create the covers with InDesign and editing the text.*Through building relationships with the editors at Alfred Music Publishing and them learning what I went to school for, I got some percussion ensemble arrangements published through Alfred for Star Wars music.*I did a Star Wars Themes Medley and Star Wars Cantina band for xylophone, marimbas, drums, bass, bells, mallets, etc.*Then I learned about music supervision and applied to jobs and got hired as a music coordinator for a one stop shop.* “One Stop Shop” means the company represents both “the master recording” and “the publishing” of a song. So the clearance process is very easy where I just reach out to one company who can approve both sides and it’s a relatively fast clearance process.*I got that job at Heavy Hitters Music, not because of my musical background but from my administrative background at Alfred Music Publishing and for film composers doing copyist work and orchestrating.*When I first started working for Heavy Hitters I was pitching music for the library to music supervisors, doing searches, guiding the company’s writers to help them know what we needed written.*I then found a job at Activision through a referral. Now I was on the choosing side where before I was on the pitching side.*Now I’m looking at budgets and terms, researching songs to find out where the ownership splits are.*It’s like detective work.*I then worked at Music and Strategy which is a company this is hired by ad agencies or specific brands as a hired music department to help with song clearance, creative ideas, negotiations, etc.*I was working with big ad agencies creatively as well as clearance.*Ad agency work is around the clock.*I recently went back to Activision as a music supervisor and now I handle the music for the trailers, in game uses, internal uses, anything music related for the company.*The music supervisor is the gate keeper to get your music in the door at a company but is not the final say. There are multiple people like directors and producers, etc. above me that have to like the music too.*When you send an email to people like me you have to keep it short and sweet. Get to the point and tell me what you do. We are busy and don’t have time to read long emails.*If you’re going to pitch music, you need to understand what the product is.*What are some tips and advice for getting your foot in the door in the types of jobs you’ve had?*Getting administrative skills down is very important to become a music coordinator. Knowing how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, knowing how to write an email and spell words correctly.*You have to be able to do these things clearly because you’re writing to people requesting music rights, etc. so you have to be organized and have templates and spreadsheets with the status of where you are in the process.*It comes back to networking and being a valid person that someone will vouch for you to get into these positions.*When you’re trying to get into the music industry, you will have to do jobs that are not music related and that’s okay.*It takes time. It’s hard work and stuff you didn’t expect to do but it all means something and can lead to something in the future*www.erickalver.comRaised by a family of magicians (seriously), Eric already had stage, TV, and radio experience by age 5. At age 11, the discovery of The Beatles and the movie "That Thing You Do" inspired him to become a drummer. 20 years later, he still gets to live the dream of working in music.Eric wears multiple hats in the industry. He's the Music Supervisor at Activision Blizzard, working on games such as Call of Duty, Overwatch, Spyro, and Guitar Hero. He is a published arranger, a composer, and a regularly gigging drummer playing in multiple groups that perform all around the Los Angeles area. You can regularly see Eric playing drums for Baby Wants Candy at Upright Citizens Brigade, weddings and corporate events with Business Time Entertainment, live band karaoke with The Moon Units,, and on the Netflix comedy special, Todd Glass: Act Happy.

Of all the sheep we have seen, this one has to be the most unusual. With bold spots and two horns or four (varied shapes, but reaching up toward the sky on the top set, curling in loops on the bottom set), this animal looks very much like something you would see on the tram tour at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. It is thought by some to be the sheep mentioned in Genesis 30, hence the origin of "Jacob" in the naming of the Jacob American Sheep. That Biblical reference is also said to be the to be the oldest mention of selective breeding (with Jacob's livestock breeding program, not the racy story about Jacob and Rachel and Leah, though Jacob obviously thought that applied as well in choosing a wife or two and starting a rather large family). Karen at Bide a Wee Farm in Oregon was a wonderfully gracious host, and took us on a tour of her farm on a very hot summer day, discussing the Jacob American and Navajo Churro flocks and why she chose the breeds. She also tried to explain to us what seemed to be a Rubik's Cube-type puzzle of higher math for the components of the breeding decisions necessary in her flock. Maintaining long-term genetic health and vigor -- and the quest to meet a very exacting breed standard -- is not an easy thing when raising the Jacob American sheep, but we believe she is exactly the person to do it. ...And, we must say, we did get to see the largest llama we have ever set eyes on, three very happy dogs that our P.A. Emily got to play with for an hour and wild blackberries galore for her to eat, an introduction to an abattoir (a new one for us), and Rick came home with a crazy set of horns for the studio that look like something from the Star Wars Cantina. What a bizarre, exciting, exhausting, and truly interesting visit.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/agriCulturePodcast)

Hi Podcast Listeners! The Break the Business Podcast is celebrating its 50th episode, and we have a terrific show for you to enjoy. This week, we have great music industry advice, comedy sketches, and some former guests stop by to congratulate Ryan and Dave on the Big 5-0. In the first segment, Ryan and Dave discuss the recent David Byrne article in the New York Times about music streaming and who's to blame for artists making little money off of platforms like Spotify. While it is easy to blame the streaming companies, perhaps the blame might lie with major labels who are using mysterious deals to siphon money away from signed and unsigned artists alike. In the second segment, indie folk artist Danielle Ate The Sandwich stops by. We talk with her about her awesome stage name, her experience composing a film soundtrack, and her Kickstarter campaign for her latest album "The Terrible Dinner Guest," which is coming out next month. We premiere a track off her new album on the Podcast! Visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/daniellesandwich/support-danielle-ate-the-sandwichs-terrible-new-al right now to support her campaign. You have a couple days left to contribute. Do it! She's a great artist. In the final segment, Ryan commemorates the Podcast's 50th episode by performing a song on his ukulele about the Podcast. Unlike Danielle, Ryan is not a great musician. But he tries so hard. "A" for effort! Ryan and Dave also discuss a real-life Star Wars Cantina that is being built and we also give you Dave's Metal Minute. Happy 50th! Thank you all very much for listening. Michael Goldberg (@MEGoldberg on twitter) joins host Craig Price to discuss convention networking at the upcoming NSA Convention. The two talk about their involvement in the 2014 National Speakers Association's annual conference where Craig will be recording a LIVE Reality Check podcast on July 2nd at 3:30pm CST in the Learning Lounge and Michael will be presenting two first-timers sessions with Glenna Salsbury at 2pm on June 29th and 7:30am (yikes!) on June 30th. They talk about the feeling of overwhelming many new attendees get at such a large conference, Michael's involvement in the conference "Buddy" program, how to effectively follow up after the conference and why Craig refers to aspects of the convention as the Star Wars Cantina. They also discuss the great charity they both are a part of: Cigar PEG and why Michael is the de facto bartender for the infamous Cigar PEG suite (think networking!). A great listen for any attendee, be it a veteran or newbie. Michael can be found at http://KnockOutNetworking.com The National Speakers Association's Annual Convention is this June 29th until July 2nd at the Grand Hyatt Manchester in sunny San Diego! See everyone there (especially for the live podcast!). APP BONUS: Read "5 Reasons Why You Don't Get More Referrals" and start using your networking to better your business.
This episode takes John D. and Gen back to the Genesis planet in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. We noted that the bar scene looks like the Star Wars Cantina, arcade games are still made with vector graphics and Doc Brown is one mean Klingon. We also discuss the political implications of Klingons as well as their dangerous sense of honor. We tangent all over the place and explain why The Lion King is a perfect date movie, the relevance of a theatrical trailer that shows all the best scenes and why Gen is not playing Fallout New Vegas yet. This is our craziest podcast EVER. We ask the question: With which SF character would you have a beer? You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''.
