A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach
Welcome to an insightful episode diving into the layers of dialogue essential for engaging storytelling in both novels and screenplays. Join me as I discuss the three crucial levels every dialogue should encompass to avoid being on the nose and to keep your audience captivated. We explore: 1) What's said: Characters' explicit dialogue, the surface-level words spoken to achieve their immediate goals, big or small. 2) What's behind what's said: Delving deeper beneath the spoken words, uncovering the hidden intentions and manipulative nuances within conversations. 3) What's untold: Beyond the immediate dialogue, discovering the subconscious motivations buried within characters' desires, often unknown even to the characters themselves. Utilizing an example like "Aren't I a good friend to you?" we unravel how this seemingly innocent question can harbor multiple layers of meaning. From a straightforward query to a hidden plea for a favor, and ultimately, an expression of the fear of loneliness buried in the character's subconscious. And after watching, I challenge you to craft your own dialogue lines to explore the hidden depths beyond the spoken words. Share your lines and their multifaceted meanings in the comments below, allowing us all to engage in this enriching writing exercise together. More importantly, I hope this helps your writing. We all know that human beings buy on emotion and justify with logic. Yet, when meeting with a prospect, the majority of advisors default to leading with logic rather than emotion. The success of your prospect meeting hinges on your ability to communicate in a way that takes them out of their heads and into their hearts. Once you do that, you can create a level of trust in 3 minutes that often takes 3 years. Fortunately, Deirdre Van Nest works with advisors on the keys to communicating in an emotionally-compelling way to fast-track trust and likability in the first meeting. In this episode, we discuss: Keys to making yourself relatable in a first meeting Why the purpose of a prospect meeting shouldn't be determining fit A superpower to get prospects to decide faster Getting someone to open up by "flipping the script" The importance of a "Why" story to explain what you do The magical question to ask at the beginning of the meeting The featured partner for this episode is Knudge, an automated system to help clients actually follow through on their tasks and reach their financial goals. *For more resources discussed in this episode, check out www.wiredplanning.com/episode76. *For more resources and insights on mastering the human side of advice, go to www.wiredplanning.com. *Follow Brendan for insights on mastering the human side of advice: Twitter LinkedIn

Jailyn Jenkins believes that each and every learner deserves lifeworthy conversations that promote community and deepen content understanding. Jailyn joined Michelle Morris Jones on the Phenomenal Teaching Podcast to unpack the PEBC Teaching Framework and specific ways in which teachers can promote student discourse that is meaningful, culturally responsive and sustaining, and inclusive of all voices. First and foremost, we must invest in building relationships with students and establishing rituals and routines that promote talk in our classrooms. This involves examining our internal biases and beliefs about who's holding the power and knowledge and who gets to have a voice. Laying the groundwork for rich and lifeworthy discourse begins on day one by engaging students in conversations about their lives and interests as well as content. This creates an expectation that each and every student has something to say that is valuable. When planning for discourse Jailyn considers: Lifeworthy Topics: What matters for students? How can you build a bridge between content standards and life outside of school? Intentional Planning: What do you want students to talk about and how will that build community or understanding? How are you going to scaffold the conversation for student success? Multiple Entry Points: Can everyone contribute something to the conversation in some way? What modes of discourse or languages are students able to use to express their ideas? Open-Ended Questions: Are questions crafted in a way that promotes critical thinking or are they designed to elicit a particular response? In what ways can students explore the “how” and “why” rather than the “what” or “who?” In closing, Jailyn encourages us to double down on lifeworthiness by building authentic relationships with students, expressing creativity that leads to innovation, and putting ourselves in the seats of students. Jailyn Jenkins, "Educator, Advocate, Wellness Enthusiast" teaches science, facilitates professional learning opportunities, and serves as an instructional coach in Aurora Public Schools. Jailyn has a Bachelor's in Education from ASU and a Masters in Education Administration from GCU. She is a Denver native, loves adventure, trampoline parks, and just about anything that brings joy! Follow her on Instagram @Ms.Jenkins.Science The "Phenomenal Teaching Podcast" is brought to you by Public Education & Business Coalition (PEBC) and is intended to elevate the strands of the PEBC Teaching Framework which is illustrated in Wendy Ward Hoffer's book, Phenomenal Teaching. Thank you for joining us this season as we strive to elevate the stories of educators who are making schools and classrooms more phenomenal than ever before by implementing community, planning, workshop, thinking strategies, discourse, and assessment strategies that promote agency, equity, and understanding.

They gave her downloads of wisdom that turned into a powerful book, Compelling Conversations with Dolphins and Whales in the Wild. The father in many shows and movies seems to be there just for comic relief by being a hardass or totally incompetent while the mother is portrayed as “the real parent.” But the father’s role in raising kids is significantly more important than we tend to give it credit for. As Warren Farrell stated, “Children who have father involvement are far less likely to be obese, far less likely to have ADHD, far less likely to do worse in every single academic area, and far less likely to be depressed or commit suicide.” And those are just a few of the effects that a good father has on his kids. It’s crucial there be a balance of masculine and feminine influence in a child’s life in order for that child to grow into a well-rounded human being able to handle the ups and downs and twists and turns of life. The marketing department of a typical for-profit organization has a huge role to play in the success of the company. Its job is to spread the word the products or services that the company brings to the world. Philanthropic marketing, on the other hand, is a whole different ball game. It is about telling stories of impact that donors have had and putting those stories in a way that compels other donors. Fundraising is all about relationships. You can't build a truly authentic and sincere relationship with donors through mass communication. In this episode, Penny Cowden talks about how to engage in compelling conversations, how to market philanthropy, and writing case statements. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: [01:25] How to communicate effectively [04:10] Positioning donors as heroes of stories [05:35] How to find compelling stories [07:40] Formal writing doesn't work in philanthropy [09:15] Creating opportunities for donors to participate Resources Mentioned in this episode Philanthropy212 Connect with Penny Penny on Facebook Penny on LinkedIn About Me Sponsor for this episode This episode is brought to you by Philanthropy212, a fundraising consulting company focusing on helping not-for-profit organizations to build sustainable practices and programs that raise more money. In this episode, AJ and Johnny share stories of how they've built connections with others and improved upon them — then explore them from a scientific perspective. In their quest to reach the perfect balance, they talk about how vital opening up the door of introduction is without prying into someone's life or personal space. AJ and Johnny explain the power of the invite, creating an emotional connection and ultimately helping us all understand the kind of person we're interested in. As best stated by Dr. Jack Shafer (Ep #712), “The sense of closeness increases if the disclosures are emotional rather than factual.”CHEAT SHEETWe live in a time when technology gives us instant satisfaction for almost everything: food, transportation, running errands, dating, keeping track of… well, almost everything! It's easy to expect connections to be created just as instantaneously. We hit a button and, BAM, a new best friend. But, it rarely happens that way. Why? How come? How does technology change our assumptions and expectations when interacting with someone new? What's the best way to instantly connect with a stranger? Trick question: you don't. Connection takes time.Think of this: Your next business mentor, romantic interest or long-term friend may be sitting right next to you! And how would you know? These moments may be passing you by in your everyday life? What practical ways can you give more people the ability to connect on an emotional level with you? By showing emotion, mirroring their body language. What are emotional bids and how can we use these to understand others? Emotional bids are humor/play/affection, and they're used to hook the other person into also sharing emotion. It's the emotion that creates a connection. AJ and Johnny refer back to their interview with Dr. Jeffrey Hall (our guest on AOC podcast #712) about how long it can take to move from acquaintance to true friend. Where in your daily interactions can you apply this patience as you get to know someone? Example: By trying not to push myself onto the new girl at the coffee shop. She seems nice, but I don't know her well enough. A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR!Problems hiring? ZipRecruiter is the highest-rated hiring site in America. Hear from a county attorney, a public defender, a prosecutor, a federal agency attorney, and a JAG officer about what their day-to-day is like, and the pathways that led them there.
